Chapter Sixteen – Paris

Chapter Number: Sixteen

Chapter Name: Paris

Page Numbers: 363-381

Date of Chapter: Thursday, March 16th, 2006

Summary: Just as Bella is about to die, Jacob pulls her out of the water. As Bella regains consciousness she is disappointed Jacob saved her and Edward’s voice has faded once again. Jacob and Sam decide to move Bella off the beach and take her back to Jacob’s home; Sam returns to the hospital.
On the way home, Bella asks Jacob how he found her. Jacob replies he was looking for her but anger resonates in his tone. He is upset that Bella went cliff diving without him especially as Victoria is still on the loose. Bella asks Jacob if the pack has found Victoria yet, but he tells her they haven’t. Instead, she jumped in the water, and he was worried she would find Bella on the beach.

Bella asks why Sam returned to the hospital and Jacob informs her of Harry Clearwater’s heart attack. Bella immediately worries for her father as he and Harry are good friends.

While at the Black’s home, Jacob finds Bella some dry clothes. Bella asks him to stay with her and they both fall asleep. Jacob’s snoring soothes Bella to sleep. Instead of a nightmare Bella enjoys a regular dream for a change. Her final dreamy image is a stage with a girl on a balcony in a nightdress. This image reminds Bella of Juliet, and as she awakes from her dream Bella ponders Juliet while Jacob continues to sleep.

Bella lingers on Juliet’s story. She wonders what Juliet would have done had Romeo left her. What if Romeo lost interest in her? Would she be able to resume her regular life? Bella thinks not. She identifies with Juliet, and is convinced Juliet would never be the same after Romeo’s departure. But what about Paris? Would Juliet hook up with Paris? If Paris was Juliet’s best friend—the only one she could be herself around—Juliet just might consider finding what little happiness is available to her with him. Of course Bella is thinking of her relationship with Jacob. She realizes she loves Jacob. The love she has for Jacob is nothing in comparison to her love for Edward, but she does love Jacob too.

Thinking of Romeo and Juliet ends up frustrating Bella. She decides Romeo never would have left Juliet, and therefore, her story is vastly different from Bella’s. Bella switches gears and thinks about her life at present. She recognizes how dumb it was to jump off the cliff. Had Jacob not been there, Bella would have died. She knows that would have killed Charlie and the rest of those who love her. Bella knows she needs to change her ways. She can no longer risk her life and safety to hear Edward’s voice. She thinks she might be able to live without his voice if she has Jacob in her life. She recalls seeing Edward’s beautiful face as she was drowning. While thinking of the drowning experience she recalls the strange, orange fire she saw on the water.

Billy returns home and tells Bella and Jacob of Harry’s death. All three are devastated.

Jacob decides to drive Bella home. Bella considers telling Jacob about everything: Edward, her hallucinations, and feelings. She knows he will think she’s crazy, but also knows Jacob will accept her anyway. Jacob loves her, and she wants to make him happy even if she doesn’t feel exactly the same way. When they arrive at Bella’s house, Jacob stops the car and hugs her. Bella considers kissing Jacob’s shoulder, but hears Edward’s voice say, “be happy.” Immediately, Bella freezes up. Jacob senses Bella’s discomfort and stops hugging her.

Jacob then begins to shake and starts the car. Bella asks him what is wrong, and Jacob tells her “vampire.” He knows there is a vampire nearby because he can smell it. They begin to drive away when Bella spots Carlisle’s car. She tells Jacob to stop—it’s not Victoria. Jacob is horrified Bella will risk her life just to see the Cullens. He  begins to sense just how attached Bella is to the vampires. Bella is elated at the sight of the car and hopes more of the Cullens are with Carlisle.

Jacob doesn’t want Bella to go into the house. He cannot protect her. He’s on Cullen territory now and must leave before caught. He tells Bella she must take herself back to her home. Jacob jumps out of the car and runs into the woods.

For a moment, Bella doubts her decision, but returns her gaze to Carlisle’s car. She knows it is his car and drives forward. Bella is nervous as she enters her house. She begins to think over the day. She remembers what Jacob said about Victoria swimming in the water—the orange flame Bella saw on the water was actually Victoria’s hair blowing in the wind. Bella is now terrified as the light flicks on and she sees her guest.

Chapter Fifteen – Pressure

Chapter Number: Fifteen

Chapter Name:  Pressure

Page Numbers:  342 – 362

Date of Chapter:  Monday, March 13th – Thursday, March 16th

Summary: Bella wakes up on Monday morning of spring break and thinks about how she had also been hunted by a vampire last spring break.  She helps to keep the werewolves’ secret from Charlie by wondering the beach alone while Jacob is out with the pack.  Jacob apologizes for being gone so much, but the wolves are on red alert until Victoria is caught.

Jacob always holds Bella’s hand when they walk on the beach together.  Bella realizes that to others it appears they are a couple.  She knows that Jacob would love for that to be the true situation.

When Bella goes to work Tuesday, Mike notices that Jacob followed her.  He asks if she is dating Jacob.  She tells him they are just friends, best friends.

Tuesday night Sam, Emily and Charlie come over to Billy’s house.  While the adults talk Jacob and Bella go out to the garage.  Bella asks if certain characteristics are “wolf things” – high body temperature, healing quickly, and his large size.  She also asks if Quil’s size is why they are worried about him.  Jacob confirms that it’s Quil’s size and body temperature that cause them to think he will become a werewolf.  He explains that there is not a certain age for the change to occur.  It just builds until something triggers it.  Jacob took longer to change than the others because he was so happy being with Bella all the time.

Bella asks what the hardest part is about being a werewolf.  Jacob says the hardest part is feeling out of control.  He feels like a monster that might hurt someone.

Jacob explains that phasing between human and wolf form is easier for him because he has the bloodline from both sides of his family.  His great-grandfathers were Ephraim Black and Quil Ateara.  Both were in the last pack with Levi Uley.

Bella goes on to ask what the best part is about being a werewolf.  Jacob says the best part is the speed.  Werewolves can run faster than vampires.

When Jacob asks why Edward killed James, Bella explains that James was trying to kill her.  She tells him that her injuries from when she was in Phoenix were caused by James.  Jacob realizes that Bella’s scar on her hand was caused by a bite from James.  Jacob nearly loses control, but Bella is able to calm him down and explains how Edward sucked the venom out, preventing her from changing into a vampire.

Jacob asks Bella if any of the other Cullens have extra talents like Edward’s ability to read minds.  She tells him about Jasper’s and Alice’s abilities.  As she talks about the Cullens she wraps her arms around herself.  Jacob notices and asks why she always does that when she’s upset.  She says it feels like she can’t breathe and like she may break into pieces.

On Wednesday, Bella goes to Emily’s house for a change of scenery.  But she’s not able to handle it when Sam comes over.  The love Bella sees between Sam and Emily is too painful of a reminder.  She leaves to go walk on the beach.  Jacob finds her sitting, curled up in a ball.  He apologizes for leaving her alone so much and tells her he will take the next morning off so they can have some fun.  He promises to take her cliff diving.  Bella agrees because she realizes it has been days since she last heard Edward’s voice.

When Bella arrives at Jacob’s house Thursday morning, Jacob isn’t home.  Billy tells her that Embry, Jared and Paul found a fresh trail from Victoria.  Sam and Jacob went out to help find her.  Bella is worried about the wolves.  Billy tells her that it’s not as dangerous for them as she thinks.  All the information the wolves need to know has been passed down from father to son for generations.

Bella leaves to go for a walk on the beach.  She is too worried about the wolves and also disappointed about losing the opportunity to hear Edward’s voice.  She decides to go cliff diving alone even though a storm is coming.  She is unable to find the path to he lower ledge and ends up on top of the cliff as it starts to rain.  She doesn’t have time to find another way down and realizes she actually wants to jump from the top.  She knows it’s the stupidest, most reckless thing she’s done so far.  She smiles as Edward’s voice pleads with her not to do it.  She has a pure adrenaline rush as she jumps, but not a single moment of fear.

The current grabs her as she plunges into the water.  She knows that she should swim parallel to the beach, but she’s not able to find the surface.  Bella is sure she is going to drown.  Her Edward delusions beg her to keep fighting.  As she gives up and accepts that she is about to die, her delusions become visual and she sees Edward’s face.  She is happy at that moment, watching and listening to Edward.

The current shoves her into what she thinks is a rock as something hits her across the chest and drags her away from her vision of Edward.  Thinking she was sinking to the ocean floor to die she tells Edward goodbye and she loves him for a final time.

Chapter Fourteen – Family

Chapter Number: Fourteen

Chapter Name: Family

Page Numbers: 323-341

Date of Chapter: March 11th 2006

Summary: Bella hides behind Jacob while they wait for the pack to meet them at the place where Jacob first taught Bella to ride her motorcycle.  When they looked toward the trees four large half-naked boys walk out; Bella thinks of them as quadruplets as they walk in sync with each other, have similar musculature, skin tone, and hairstyle – short cropped black hair.

As soon as the pack sees Bella they all became furious in the same moment.  Sam, the oldest and biggest ,is angry with Jacob for sharing the secret with Bella, but it’s Paul that acts on his anger.  Jacob tries to tell the pack that Bella can help them, but before he can explain any further, a shouting match erupts between Jacob and Paul, which eventually turns into a physical fight.

Paul morphs into an extremely large dark silver wolf and Jacob runs headlong into him morphing on the fly into a large russet wolf.   The “Jacob-wolf” is able to push the “Paul-wolf” into the forest away from Bella.  Sam orders Embry and Jared to take Bella to Emily’s house while he supervises the fighting wolves.

After Embry and Jared bet on who would win the fight between Jacob and Paul, Embry takes the driver seat of Bella’s truck, while Bella tries not to be sick, and they head to Sam’s fiancée’s house.  Jared warns Bella not to stare at Emily without any further explanation.

They arrive at Emily’s house and find her putting muffins on a paper plate.  When she turns to look at them Bella understands Jared’s warning.  Emily is beautiful with “satiny copper skin” and long black hair, but three thick red scars mar the right side of her face.

Sam, Jacob and Paul finally return and the first thing Sam does is make his way over to Emily and kiss her lovingly, something Bella finds harder to watch than a romantic movie because of the intensity and sincerity of their feelings.

Once the group is settled in Emily’s kitchen and eating the breakfast she prepared, Jacob explains that the “redhead” is after Bella, her mission – avenge the death of her mate.   He explains to them that the “black-haired leech”, Laurent, was not her mate, and that her mate was actually killed by the Cullens.

The entire room is shocked to learn that a vampire is after a simple girl and Jared suggests using Bella as bait, to which Jacob responds by throwing a can opener at his head.   Sam suggests a strategy where by they will split up hopefully creating an opportunity to surround her.  Bella notices the look on Emily’s face at the thought that Sam has divided the boys up in a way that he will be in the smaller group – consisting of Jacob and himself.

Embry mentions that Quil is very close to becoming like one of them and at that the room becomes somber – none of them wish the their own fate, on their friend.

Jacob wants Bella to stay in La Push as much as possible, while Billy and Harry keep Charlie busy with “March Madness”, which Bella agrees to.

Bella spends the rest of the day in La Push and later in the evening Charlie joins her for dinner at the Blacks’.   After dinner Charlie and Bella head home in their own vehicles and once home Charlie questions Bella about the fight she had had with Jacob and the gang she was so concerned about.   She brushes it off as the mystery of teenaged boys.

Bella lies in bed wondering if Edward had been the one killing hikers in the forest – if that would have kept her away from him. She surmises that even that wouldn’t have kept her away, as love was irrational in her eyes.   She falls asleep and dreams that she is in the forest again, only this time she is holding Emily’s scarred hand and together they “face the shadows and wait for their werewolves to come home”.

Characters Involved: Jacob Black, Bella Swan, Sam Uley, Paul, Embry Call, Jared, Emily, Charlie Swan

Character Mentioned: Laurent, The Cullens, Quil Ateara, Billy Black, and Harry Clearwater

~Embry to Paul about Jacob’s shredded clothing

“Well, the wolf’s out of the bag now.”
~Embry to Jared and Bella

“So you’re the vampire girl.”
~Emily to Bella upon meeting her for the first time

“Yes. Are you the wolf girl?”
~Bella’s reply to Emily

“Save some for your brothers”
~Emily says to Embry after he shoves his third muffin into his mouth whole.

“Wolf thing”
~Jacob to Bella regarding the quick healing abilities of werewolves, more specifically Paul after their fight in the woods.

“You’re silly.  Hunting vampires is fun.  It’s the best part of this whole mess.”
~Jacob to Bella before she leaves his home after dinner.

“If I’m silly, then you’re dangerously unbalanced.”
~Bella to Jacob in response to the quote above.

Important Information learned:
Billy can’t afford any more new shoes for Jacob.

Jacob phases on the fly and attacks Paul in a half second and Embry deems that a gift.

Emily is Sam’s fiancée.

Emily’s face was scarred by Sam who got angry one day and phased when she happened to be too close.

The treaty can be broken by either the werewolves attacking one of the Cullens off their land (La Push) or the Cullens biting a human.

The pack was more of a family than anything else – the wolves are like brothers, and they are very “at home” in Emily’s house.

Werewolves heal very quickly.

Chapter Thirteen – Killer

Chapter Number: Thirteen

Chapter Name: Killer

Page Numbers: 300-322

Date of Chapter: March 11, 2007

Summary: The chapter begins with Bella on her way to La Push to warn Jacob the rangers, Charlie and a group of volunteers are hunting for the wolves. She believes the werewolves are killing the hikers can cannot condone this, but she also feels bound to protect Jacob.

When she reaches the Blacks’ home, Billy denies that Jacob is there until Bella makes it clear that she knows Jacob is a werewolf. Jacob is sleeping, and Bella decides to walk on the beach while she waits for him to wake up.

She rests on a large driftwood tree, perhaps the same one she sat on when she and Jacob met, and tries to reconcile her conflicting feelings. She concludes that Jacob is her friend regardless of his behavior, but she’s still unsure of how to deal with the situation.

Jacob arrives. He seems happy at first because Bella has figured out that he’s a werewolf, but then he notices her expression. When Bella expresses concern for the men hunting the wolves, Jacob says that they will disappear soon enough. Bella assumes that Jacob means the wolves will kill the men hunting for them.

Angry because he believes Bella is disgusted him, he calls her a hypocrite. Bella asks him if he and the pack must continue to kill people. Jacob realizes that Bella accepts him as a werewolf and explains that they are hunting a vampire who is killing hikers.

Bella assumes the vampire is Laurent until Jacob explains that the pack killed him after he attacked her in the meadow. Bella explains how relieved she feels.

When Jacob asks her why didn’t talk to him sooner, Bella reminds him that he wasn’t around.

They discuss Jacob’s comments about how it wasn’t safe to be in Bella’s room the night before. She assumed he meant the danger from the vampires hunting her. Jacob explains that although one reason for avoiding her was to protect the pack’s secret, a second reason, that he is still learning to control his anger to keep from phasing, placed her in danger.

As Jacob assures Bella that the pack will protect her and keep an eye on Charlie and the others, Bella remembers that there is a vampire killing hikers now. She knows Victoria has come to hunt her. Jacob confirms this, pointing out the pack can’t figure out her tactics because there’s no logic to her attack. Bella explains that Victoria is after her. She describes the events of the previous year’s spring break when James was killed.

Jacob goes into the woods to phase into a werewolf in order to communicate with the pack. While he is gone, Bella considers the various aspects of her situation and her terror increases. Jacob realizes the extent of her fear when he returns. He promises to take care of her and of Charlie.

When Bella asks why he went into the woods, he explains the werewolves’ telepathic abilities to her. He seems surprised that she handles this information so calmly. When Bella points out that this isn’t her first experience with mind-reading, Jacob expresses dismay that the legends about vampires with special powers. He also tells her that Sam, as Alpha of the pack, can give commands that have special power over the werewolves and that they cannot disobey when he does this.

Jacob tells Bella about the trauma of phasing for the first time. He points out that Sam went through this difficult experience alone.

Knowing that the pack will be angered by her presence, Bella wants to stay behind, but Jacob believes that her knowledge of vampires will help the wolves track Victoria. Bella feels like a traitor, but she wants to help stop Victoria.

Bella and Jacob talk about the Cullens and how hurt and alone Bella has been. Then they head off together to meet the pack.

But I wasn’t alone – there were the voices there, in my head, telling me what had happened and what I had to do. That kept me from losing my mind, I think. But Sam… Sam had no help.”
~Jacob Black, pg. 319

“You know a ton of things that can help us. It’s not like you’re just some ignorant human. You’re like a… I don’t know, spy or something. You’ve been behind enemy lines.”
~Jacob Black, pg. 320

“How do you know me so well Jacob? Sometimes it’s like you can read my mind.”
~Bella Swan, pg. 321

“Who’s afraid of the big, bad wolf?”
~Jacob Black, pg. 321

Important Information Learned:
Jacob confirms that he is a werewolf and the other boys in “Sam’s cult” are a pack of werewolves led by Sam, who is the Alpha.

Werewolves exist for one thing – to protect humans from vampires.

The pack killed Laurent.

Killing one vampire is not a problem for a pack the size of the one at La Push.

Victoria is the vampire currently killing people in the Forks area.

The pack is actively pursuing Victoria. They haven’t known her motives until this point, when Bella explains to Jacob that Victoria is trying to kill her.

Anger causes werewolves to change from human to wolf form.

Contrary to traditional werewolf lore, the wolves don’t need a full moon to phase from human to wolf.

Bella is worried about the pack confronting Victoria. Jacob finds this insulting and encourages her to have more confidence in them.

Werewolves can communicate telepathically in wolf form, regardless of distance.

The werewolves have legends about vampires with special powers.

Sam, as the Alpha, has the ability to command the rest of the pack. When he does this, the others must comply. It is impossible for them to disobey that kind of order from the Alpha.

There are, according to Jacob, “a load” of wolf things.

The first time a person changes into wolf form, the experience is terrifying. But the other wolves can help by communicating telepathically. However, Sam had to make the change alone, without help.

Jacob knows Bella has more information about vampires that can help the pack.

Bella feels like she has betrayed/will betray the Cullens for sharing what she knows about vampires.

Jacob pays such close attention to Bella that it’s almost as if he read her mind.

Jacob suggests that Bella is better off without the Cullens.

Chapter Twelve – Intruder

Chapter Number: Twelve

Chapter Name: Intruder

Page Numbers: 278-299

Date of Chapter:  March 10th – March 11th

Summary: When Bella hears a scratching sound on her windows she automatically assumes that it is Victoria. She’s relieved, though, when she discovers that it’s Jacob instead. He swings inside her room from a tree in the front yard. The way he arrives through Bella’s window reminds her of Edward’s previous entries, and the reminder bit at her insides.

After a bit of talking, Bella discovers that Jacob came to apologize, but Bella is tired and frustrated so she tries to push him away. Jacob doesn’t budge an inch and Bella lowers her hands, uncomfortable, because they were on the bare skin of his chest. Suddenly overcome with weariness, Bella sways on her feet and Jacob helps her back to her bed.

After further conversation with Jacob, it is clear that he wants to explain something to Bella that he doesn’t seem to have the ability to tell outright. When he tries to simply explain his situation with Bella, something unseen hinders him, and he’s forced to take a more roundabout way of explaining things.  He compares his secret to the Cullens. He says that the secret he’s keeping is similar to the one that Bella’s keeping for them. That it’s not his secret to tell.

Bella gets frustrated that there are more riddles than actual answers.  Jacob is also frustrated with himself, because he can’t just go out and say what he wants to. Then he brings up the first day they met on La Push and the stories that he told her then. But Bella can only remember one of the Quileute legends that were told- the one about vampires.

Jacob then asks if he was the one that told her that the Cullens were vampires, back there on the beach. He asks her if she didn’t know beforehand. Bella is still confused as to why he’s suddenly believing the legends he used to joke about, but she doesn’t say anything to confirm or deny what he was implying. Bella is keeping the Cullen’s secret even then. Jacob then brings up the secret that he’s forced to keep and how tight he’s bound to keep it. Bella doesn’t like the pain she sees on Jacob’s face when he says this. She keeps the Cullens secret out of love, but for Jacob it didn’t appear to be that way. Bella blames Sam for Jacob’s distress.

Bella suggests running away from them, to get free, but Jacob says that it isn’t possible- that there’s no possible way that he can run from it. Before Jacob leaves, he urges Bella to try and figure out what he’s been trying to say. He says for her to call him when she figures it out… but only if she wants to.  He pulls Bella into a bear hug and then walks out the door.

Bella falls to sleep almost immediately. She begins to have a dream that is not the same dream she‘s been having.  In it, she finds Jacob and he tries to pull her into the forest, but she resists him. He urges her to run, and that is when she realizes that she’s had this very same dream once before- the night after she talked about the Quileute legends with Jacob on the beach.

Bella watches the familiar dream play out, and then Jacob falls and begins shaking and transforms into the red-brown wolf she’d seen in the meadow. She screams and wakes herself up. She replays the conversation from the beach over in her head, realizing once and for all that Jacob is a werewolf.
She wonders why she’s having this reaction to her discovery. She didn’t act like this when she found out about Edward. But then again, she knew from the very beginning that Edward was special. Jacob is her friend and it shocks her that he could be anything but human.

Bella then realizes that the La Push “pack” are all werewolves. She gets up suddenly and resolves to drive to La Push immediately. She encounters Charlie in the hall and tells him where she’s going. He warns her about the other murders by wolves that had occurred. Charlie also tells her that there are people headed out to hunt them. Bella sees that he’s dressed like he’s going out to help hunt.
When Charlie leaves, Bella sits down, stunned, and tries to decide if she still wants to go to La Push. Eventually, she decides to go because Jacob is her best friend and she want s to make sure he’s safe from the hunting party. She worries that Jacob and the guys really are responsible for the murders that were going on.

Chapter Eleven – Cult

Chapter Number: Eleven

Chapter Name: Cult

Page Numbers: 252-277

Date of Chapter: March 5th – March 10th 2006

Summary:  After learning that Laurent and Victoria are hunting her, Bella is shocked to find herself alive each morning. She’s also worried that in the course of hunting her, Charlie could be hurt or killed. Charlie himself is worried at how jumpy Bella has become and believes it to be because of Jacob’s prolonged absence.

Bella hopes that Jacob would call her to give her news about Embry but he doesn’t communicate with her. Instead, on Tuesday, she calls him but no one answers. The next day she calls every half hour until eleven at night but, again, no one answers. On Wednesday, she sits in her car for an hour debating whether to go to La Push but is afraid to do so. She believes that by doing so she would lead Victoria or Laurent (whom she supposes has already joined up with Victoria again) to Jacob and she cannot allow herself to bring him into danger.

Wednesday night, Charlie again calls Harry Clearwater to ask him if the Blacks were “out of town”. Harry told him they were not.  Friday afternoon, Bella realizes that Jacob must have fallen into Sam Uley’s group. Bella decides to call Charlie in case the police need to get involved. However, Charlie tells her that Sam Uley is “a great kid” and that if Billy isn’t concerned, she should not be worried either. He also mentions that two tourists had gone missing because of wolves, leading Bella to believe that Laurent outran the wolves but did not fight them.

Bella next calls Billy and finds out that Jacob is with Embry. She drives to La Push, determined to wait outside his house the entire day in order to talk to Jacob. When she enters La Push, she sees Quil—who looks bigger than before—walking alone along the street. She pulls up and offers him a ride. She asks him about Jacob and Quil tells her that he is a part of Sam’s. He also confesses his worries about Jacob and his fear that he may be next.

Bella drops him off at his house and returns to the Black’s to wait for Jacob. She doesn’t have long to wait before there is a sharp rap at the glass and Jacob questions her as to why she is in La Push. Bella is shocked at how different Jacob is; his hair is cropped short, he’s bigger than before and his expression is no longer warm but closed and resentful. Behind him, she sees Sam with the rest of his group and Bella is overcome with an urge to hit Sam. She controls herself and tells Jacob she wants to talk with him alone. Jacob turns to Sam who nods his head and says something in the Quileute language before leaving with the others in tow.

Bella gets out of the car and they walk to a fringe of trees. Jacob tells her that Sam isn’t who he had believed and that Sam was helping him. Bella blames Sam for Jacob’s change but Jacob blames the Cullens. When Bella asks him why, he hisses, “For existing”. This prompts Edward’s voice to warn her against making Jacob angry and tell her to try and calm Jacob down. Jacob turns to walk away and Bella screams after him that Quil is worried he’s next. Jacob looks hurt but continues walking away telling Bella that he can’t be her friend anymore and runs to his house. Bella is terribly hurt and waits for him but only Billy comes out to tell her that he told Charlie she was on her way home.

When she gets to her house, Charlie is waiting for her. He’s horrified when he sees her face, blank like when she was in her zombie-stage. Bella says that Sam told Jacob he could not be her friend anymore. While she showers, Charlie calls Billy who blames Bella for leading Jacob on. Charlie quickly defends Bella and warns him that he’ll be watching Sam and his gang.

Bella falls asleep and dreams of the new Jacob walking alongside her. As she watches, his features change until he becomes Edward. When she reaches out to touch him, Edward vanishes.   She wakes up suddenly to a strange sound at her window, one of fingernails scratching glass.

Chapter Ten – The Meadow

Chapter Number: Ten

Chapter Name: The Meadow

Page Numbers: 225-251

Date of Chapter: February 23rd – March 4th 2006

Summary: Bella is waiting for Jacob to call but he doesn’t, so instead she calls him.  The first time Bella calls Jacob, Billy answers and tells her they did see a doctor, but for some reason she doesn’t believe him.  She continues to try and reach Jacob, but the following two days there is no answer at the Black residence.

Bella ignores Jacob’s request to call first, but instead heads to their home to find it empty.  She assumes they are at the hospital and that Jake must be very sick.  She stops by the hospital but finds that neither Billy nor Jake have been there.   As soon as Charlie gets home, she makes him phone Harry Clearwater.    Charlie finds out that Harry has been having heart trouble and was at the hospital himself, he also discovers that there had been some phone line problems and that Billy did indeed take Jake to a local doctor and he has mono.

Charlie is visibly concerned about Harry so instead of pestering him, Bella goes to do her own research and finds that most of the symptoms of mononucleosis do not match Jake’s.  Bella is suspicious of Billy, but can’t pinpoint why.  She is disappointed to find that mono could last a month and decides that since the disease wasn’t infectious she’d wait a week before getting “pushy”.

Bella survives the entire week without Jacob, but only barely.  Her dreams became difficult again and she’s feeling the pain in her chest again, worse than before.  Finally on Saturday morning she calls Jacob.  Billy answers and informs her that Jacob is out with friends and that he didn’t have mono after all.   Bella eventually hangs up with Billy feeling hurt and disappointed.  Bella assumes that Jacob changed his mind about the advice she gave him and that he’s decided to stay away from her after all.

Before Charlie leaves to go fishing he requests that she stay away from the forest, as he is worried about bear attacks since a hiker went missing recently.   Bella decides that she cannot spend the day at home, and instead chooses to spend the day looking for the meadow.  After hiking for a while suffering the pain of her loss, she unexpectedly walks right into the meadow.  Bella is overcome with feelings of disappointment as she realizes that this place doesn’t hold the same magic it once did.   She is glad that Jacob isn’t with her, as she would have a difficult time explaining why she was on her knees clutching at her sides.

As Bella is about to flee from the meadow, a figure appears out of the trees.  Momentarily she believes it is Edward then realizes that it is another vampire, and then finally she recognizes that it is Laurent.   Bella is irrationally happy to see him, and believes he must have changed his hunting habits since going to live in Alaska with the other “good-vampire” coven.  Laurent tells her about his stay in Alaska and how upon arriving in Forks he has been by the Cullen house only to find it empty.  Bella soon realizes the danger she is in, as Laurent’s eyes indicate his diet hasn’t changed – they are a sinister red.

Bella hears Edward’s voice in her head telling her to lie so that she can somehow escape from Laurent.   She tries her best to scare Laurent away with the threat that Edward would come after him, but Laurent sees right through Bella’s ruse.  He confesses to her that he liked Tanya and Irina from Alaska, but that the restrictions were difficult for him.

Laurent reveals that he is here as a favor to Victoria.    He tells her that Victoria is out for revenge and though Laurent doesn’t agree with Victoria’s logic to kill a human, he is thirsty and believes he’s sparing Bella immeasurable pain by killing her now, before Victoria gets to her.  Edward’s voice in Bella’s head continues to coach her, suggesting she threaten him and then finally to beg.   Before Laurent can spring, five wolves prowl out of the forest, and chase down Laurent.

Bella can’t understand why the wolves were able to scare Laurent away, but she composes herself, and flees from the forest.   She finally makes it home, still shaky from the near death experience.  Once at home, Charlie sees her and realizes that something is wrong.  She explains to him how she went hiking and came across the bear that they were looking for, only it wasn’t a bear, but five huge wolves.

Bella reflects on the day and is horrified at the thought that Victoria would eventually come for her, or worse hurt Charlie who was only a room away.  She hopes in her mind that out of some strange luck, the wolves would be able to catch up with the indestructible vampire and destroy him.

Chapter Nine – Third Wheel

Chapter Number: Nine

Chapter Name: Third Wheel

Page Numbers: 201-224

Date of Chapter: February 14-19, 2007

Summary: Bella enjoys her time with Jacob so much that she realizes she’s no longer miserable. As Bella’s riding skills improve the danger level decreases, and Edward’s voice disappears. In order to hear it again, Bella becomes more obsessed with finding the meadow.

On Valentines Day, Jacob offers Bella a box of conversation hearts and asks her to be his Valentine. Feeling uncomfortable, she uses humor to reassert the ever-blurry boundary of their relationship. Bella invites Jacob to a movie and makes sure he knows it’s a group activity.  The next day, Bella begins to assemble a group for the movie. Mike is excited to go until he realizes it’s not a date. Lauren and Jessica refuse to go and manage to convince everyone but Ben and Angela to stay away as well.

On the day of the movie Bella gets home from school and finds Jacob in her driveway with his Rabbit finished. She gives him a congratulatory high five, and Jacob uses the moment to hold her hand.  When Mike pulls into the driveway, Jacob recognizes him from First Beach as the guy who thought Bella was his girlfriend. He asked Bella if Mike is still under the same delusion and Bella points out that some people are slow to take a hint. Jacob counters that sometimes it’s good to not give up.

The group dwindles to three since Angela has the stomach flu and Ben won’t go without her. Bella becomes upset when she realizes she’s now alone with Mike and Jacob.  Her fears are confirmed when, during the movie, both boys position their hands so they can hold hers if it comes down on the armrest. Bella and Jacob are laughing at how terrible the movie is when Mike runs out to the bathroom. Jacob begrudgingly checks on him and realizes it wasn’t the blood in the movie; Mike is actually sick.

As they wait for Mike to emerge, Jacob sits by Bella and begins to flirt, but Bella shoots him down. Jacob presses the issue of her feeling for him. Bella confesses that she likes him better then anyone, and with this ray of hope Jacob tells Bella that he won’t give up.
Mike finally emerges from the bathroom and looks awful. Jacob agrees to drive them home but grabs a popcorn bucket in case Mike feels sick again. When they get outside Bella is freezing but Jacob isn’t bothered at all. She feels his forehead and says he feels really feverish. He informs Bella that he feels fine and puts his arm around her to keep her warm.

During the ride home, Bella has an internal debate. She wants Jacob to stay clear of her romantically, but he is so comforting to her that she is afraid to push the issue so far that he leaves her.  Jacob drops Mike off at home and confesses he isn’t feeling well himself. He promises to call as soon as he gets home; then, in a sudden display of emotion, he promises Bella that he will always be there for and she can always count on him. She assures Jacob that she knows and already counts on him a lot. His reaction makes her feel even guiltier. He leaves with an odd look on his face.

Bella debates with herself again. She wishes that Jacob were her brother so they could have a close friendship without having to worry about him wanting more. She also realizes that she will never be able to love him romantically; part of her will always love Edward.

Bella waits for Jacob’s call but it never comes. She finally calls his house and is informed by Billy that he is sick and to not visit. The next morning Bella has the flu and she spends the day on the bathroom floor. By the time she wakes up the next morning she is fine.  Bella figures Jacob must be feeling better too, and calls to see how he’s doing; he isn’t any better. She apologizes for exposing him to the flu; he informs her he was glad to go and it isn’t her fault he‘s sick. Jacob tells her he doesn’t think he has the same thing she did. Bella offers to bring him something; however, just like Billy he briskly tells her not to come. He agrees to call her when he feels better. She says he’ll see her soon and he tells her to wait for his call. Before he hangs up Jacob whispers her name.

Chapter Name: Adrenaline

Page Numbers: 181-200

Date of Chapter: Jan 25th – 30th

Summary: After Jacob manages to get the two motorcycles into riding-shape, he takes Bella out for a test-drive. On her first attempt, she was distracted by Edward’s voice speaking to her, and the bike fell on top of her. On Bella’s second try she managed to drive a considerable way down a road before her bike swerved off into the trees. The bike landed on top of Bella again and Jacob came running down the street and pulled it off of her.

Bella got a cut on her head and Jacob tries to convince Bella to go to the hospital. Bella convinces Jacob to take her to her house so she can change clothes so that the story of her tripping in Jacob’s garage and hitting her head on a hammer would be believable. They didn’t want to have to explain to Charlie about the motorcycles.

During a conversation with Charlie about how she got her wound, Charlie suggested that she stay out of Jacob’s garage completely. Horrified at the prospect of not being able to have the opportunity to hear Edward’s voice again by riding the motorcycles, Bella told Charlie that she’d received her cut hiking. Her dad then warned her about the “big bears” that were out in the forest, and advised her to steer clear of them entirely.

Bella tells Jacob about the encounter with Charlie, and he requests the they stop riding for at least a week in order to get Charlie off their backs. Bella then decides that, in order to hear Edward’s voice without the bikes that she and Jacob could go on a search for The Meadow. So, on a Saturday, they make their first excursion into the forest in an attempt to find The Meadow. After joking around with Billy about seeing the “bears” in the forest, Bella and Jacob set out.

They hiked until sunset without reaching their destination, but both resolved to try again soon.

“Nothing. I just hadn’t realized before. Did you know, you’re sort of beautiful?”
~ Bella to Jacob.

“Maybe we’ll see the super bear,” Jacob joked, eyes on his design. I glanced at Billy swiftly, fearing a Charlie-style reaction.
But Billy just laughed at his son. “Maybe you should take a jar of honey, just in case.” Jake chuckled. “Hope you new boots are fast, Bella. One little jar isn’t going to keep a hungry bear occupied for long.”
“I only have to be faster than you.”
~Billy, Bella and Jacob discussing a hiking trip

“I hope we see that bear tomorrow. I’m sort of disappointed about that.”
“Yes, me too,” I agreed sarcastically. “Maybe we’ll get lucky tomorrow and something will eat us!”
~Bella and Jacob after hiking

“I would have figured you for a trail kind of girl.”
“Not me.” I smiled bleakly. “I’m a rebel.”
~Bella and Jacob about to embark on the search for the meadow

“Bears don’t want to eat people. We don’t taste that good.” He grinned at me in the dark cab. “Of course, you might be an exception. I bet you’d taste good.”
“Thanks so much,” I said, looking away. He wasn’t the first person to tell me that.

But, wouldn’t it be worse if there were no change? If the couches sat just as I’d last seen them, the paintings on the walls—worse still, the piano on it’s low platform? Just like me.
