Epilogue: Treaty

Chapter Number: Epilogue

Chapter Name: Treaty

Page Numbers: 548 – 563

Date of Chapter: April 7, 2007

Summary:
Life has pretty much returned to normal for Bella.  Edward has somehow managed to find several schools that are willing to take late applications.  Charlie, upset over everything Bella did, has grounded her.  She is allowed out for school and work.  Edward is only allowed over at certain designated times when Charlie is home.  Edward returned to school and took on the exact same schedule as Bella.

Bella isn’t allowed to go to LaPush.  She calls Jacob at night when Edward isn’t there.  Bella feels guilty for not thinking of Jake more, but she finds it difficult to be unhappy at all now that Edward is back.

When Billy comes in to Bella’s work and tell her that Jacob doesn’t want to talk to her, Bella accuses Jake of being rude.  Edward says it is to be expected since they are natural enemies, but Bella protests.  Edward very nearly says that he would kill Jacob, but stops himself and says that he would try very hard not to kill Jacob.  Bella is reminded briefly of Romeo and Paris.

Edward brings her home from work to find that Jacob had brought her motorcycle to Charlie.  Edward tells her that Charlie is very angry at her for even having a motorcycle.  Bella wonders why Jacob would do such a thing to betray her.  She asks Edward if Jacob is still there, and he is.  It is her intention to deal with Jacob personally, but Edward says that Jake is there to speak to him, not Bella.

They meet up with Jacob at the edge of the woods where Edward tells Bella that Jacob’s intention was to get her grounded so that she wouldn’t be able to see Edward anymore.  Bella yells at him that she is already grounded and that is why she hasn’t been to see him.  Again, Edward reads in Jacob’s mind that he thought Bella had been avoiding him because of Edward.  Jacob snarls at Edward to stop reading his thoughts.

Edward thanks Jacob for everything he did for Bella – for keeping her alive – and offers to do anything in return for Jacob.  A simple raise of the eyebrow from Jacob and Edward knows what he wants.  He then explains that he will not leave Bella until Bella asks him to go.

Keeping his eyes on Edward, Jacob explains that the reason he has come is to remind Edward that the treaty is very specific.  The vampires are not allowed to bite a human.  Bite, not kill.  When Bella says that it’s none of Jake’s business, he very nearly shifts into his wolf form, he’s so angry.  Edward and Jacob start to get into it when Charlie calls from the house.

Before they part, Edward tells Jacob that they found no trace of Victoria on their side of the line.  They again begin to fight over who has the right to track Victoria and kill her when Charlie’s angry voice interrupts them.  Bella and Jacob part regretfully with nothing resolved, but Bella understands that she can get through anything so long as Edward is by her side.

Chapter Twenty-Four – Vote

Chapter Number: 24

Chapter Name: Vote

Page Numbers: 522 – 547

Date of Chapter: March 22, 2007

Summary:
Somewhat reluctantly, Edward carries Bella back though the woods.  Bella says that she doesn’t feel she is enough to hold Edward, yet he says her hold on him is unbreakable.  She tells him that her greatest problem is that he can leave her, but again he disagrees and says that he will never leave her.  Bella asks him, since he has agreed to stay, if she can have back her pictures, CD, and other things that went missing when Edward left.  He explains that he put them under a lose floorboard in her room.

Bella then tries to explain the voice she heard over the last few months.  Edward doesn’t like the sound of Bella risking her life just so that she can hear his voice.  At the same time, Bella reaches an epiphany about her relationship with Edward.  She realizes that he loves her, and Edward confirms that fact.  They kiss until Bella feels dizzy.  Edward tells her that she was better at surviving than he was – that he pretty much gave up and couldn’t be around his family or anyone.

When they arrive at the Cullen home, everyone gathers around the dinning room table where Bella asks them their opinion on her becoming a vampire and avoiding the Volturi coming to threaten and harm the Cullens.  She points out that Alice promised them she would be a vampire.  Edward says it isn’t necessary because, thanks to the fact that Bella can’t be “seen” by Felix, he doesn’t think the Volturi will be able to find her.

Taking in his point, Bella puts her mortality to the vote.  Edward and Rosalie are the only ones to vote no.  Carlisle believes it is the only way that makes sense.  Bella hugs Esme and then turns to Alice and asks her where they should go for the transformation.  Edward shouts a resounding no.  Alice says she probably doesn’t have that much control, and so Bella then turns to Carlisle.  Edward, still holding on to hope, says that it doesn’t have to be now.  He suggests that Bella at least finish high school before they do anything further.  Bella agrees to consider it.  Edward takes her home.

Once back at Bella’s house and lying in bed, Edward asks her what she wants more than anything.  Bella tells him that she wants him to be the one to change her in to a vampire.  He then begins negotiations for what that is worth to her.  He starts with five years, then three years.  Bella agrees to one year, but that is her limit.  Instead, Edward offers her a condition – that she marry him first.

Bella explains that she doesn’t hold much faith in marriage and that her mother would freak out if she did get married.  Edward holds to his condition, even when Bella agrees to give him eighteen months instead of a year.  Their arguing wakes Charlie up, and Edward has to leave.

Charlie scolds her and demands an explanation for why she vanished.  He knows about the cliff diving and the fact that Edward is back and is very upset. He doesn’t think Edward is good for her.  Bella says that she will move out and go on her own then, even though that isn’t what she wants.  She says that she isn’t going to fight with him now about it, but that he needs to think it over and try to get used to the fact that Edward is here to stay.

Bella apologizes to Edward for her father’s unkind words.  He says it was okay and that he deserved it.  They kiss and Edward says he will stay forever, which is all Bella is asking for.

Page Numbers: 500-521

Date of Chapter: Wednesday, March 22, 2006

Summary: Bella fights waking up from her dream/nightmare because she doesn’t want to lose Edward.  When she does wake up she doesn’t believe Edward is really there, she thinks he is still a delusion.  Edward tries to convince her that she is awake but instead Bella thinks she has drowned and is dead.  Edward assures her that she is not dead.  Slowly Bella realizes that she was indeed in Italy and everything she thought was a nightmare was real.  Edward tells Bella that Charlie band him form the house and Bella is furious.  She asks Edward what the story is for her three day absence but he doesn’t have a cover story.

Bella cautiously starts to question Edward about what he did while he was away, choosing the least important question first, what have you been doing?  Edward responds by saying nothing exciting.  Bella comments that he would say that if she were dreaming.  Edward admits that he was tracking Victoria.  Edward begins to apologize to Bella for leaving her in danger.  He didn’t realize Victoria had such a response in her because he was too busy concentrating on James.  He admits that he felt sick after hearing what she told Alice and seeing for himself what Alice saw.  The worst part was that she had put her life in the hands of immature, volatile werewolves.  Bella stops him, thinking he is apologizes out of guilt and nothing else.  She wants him to be happy no matter the cost to her.  Bella begins to tell him that the things that happened while he was away were not his fault.  Bella feels the ghost of the hole waiting it rip open when he disappears again.  Bella tells Edward he can’t go off to Italy because of the choices she makes.

Edward is stunned that Bella thinks the only reason he went to Italy was because he felt guilty.  He explains that he can’t live in a world where she doesn’t exist.  Bella is confused only focused on the words she remembers him saying in the forest.  Edward tells her that he is a good liar but for her to believe him so quickly was excruciating.  Bella thinks she is dreaming again because he couldn’t possibly love her.  Edward leans in to kiss Bella, to prove she is not sleeping but Bella asks him not to, saying that when he leaves it would be too hard.

Edward asks Bella if there is someone else, if that is the reason that she was so hesitant every time he touched her and can she still love him after everything that has happened.  Bella tells him that the way she feels about him will never change, she will always love him.  Edward kisses her deeply.  After, he explains that he isn’t leaving.  He tells her that he only wanted her to have a happy human life but no matter how many miles he puts between them she can’t be safe.  Edward explains what it was like for him to be away from her and she tells him it was the same for her.

Bella isn’t as concerned with Victoria returning she has bigger problems.  At first Edward thinks the werewolves are the problem but Bella laughs him off.  She states that the second biggest problem is the Volturi coming to check on her.  Edward isn’t worried he has a plan.  Edward again refuses the idea of changing Bella.

Bella decides that she is going to the Cullen’s.  Edward is confused at first.  He tries to convince her to stay home that she can’t take her truck it will wake Charlie.  Bella insists on going to his house so he caves and says he will take her.  When he asks her why she wants to go she states, “My motality.  I’m putting it to a vote.”

Page Numbers: 485-499

Date of Chapter: March 21, 2006

Summary: Bella, Edward and Alice must wait in the reception area of the Volturi castle until dark. It dawns on Bella that the noise she hears is her own hysterical screaming. Edward holds her protectively. Horrified by the killing of the tourists , Bella continues to cry while Edward comforts her.

After learning that Gianna is fully aware of the Volturi’s feeding practices and hopes to become one of them, Bella feels disgusted. Edward, who regards all vampires as monsters, responds to her comment with visual distress.

In the midst of the danger, Bella feels happy to be with Edward. They list reasons to be happy: they are alive, together and will be alive tomorrow. But Bella still fears that Edward will leave as soon as the opportunity arises.

Bella offers to move from Edward’s lap because he appears hungry. He assures her that, “I’ve never been in better control of  that side of my nature than right now.” Bella avoids asking questions, hoping that she can delay Edward’s exit.

Meanwhile, Alice and Edward plan the return trip. Edward explains that the Volturi call Bella his “la tua cantante” because her blood sings for him.

Alec arrives to release them. They hurry away through the festival crowd. Alice steals another car to get them to the airport.

Bella refuses to sleep, and on the airplane, points out to Edward that she will have nightmares if she sleeps. Alice calls Jasper to communicate their success and to arrange for the family to meet them at the airport.

Edward holds, kisses and touches Bella, which worries her. She fears the affect this will have on her when he leaves again. Edward doesn’t speak; he just holds and comforts her.

The Cullens greet them at the airport. Jasper, Carlisle and Esme wait for them inside. They express their gratitude to Bella for saving Edward and chastise Edward’s suicidal behavior. Emmett and Rosalie wait outside. Edward reluctantly allows Emmett and Rosalie to drive them home. Rosalie apologizes to Edward, then to Bella, who forgives her immediately. Bella notes that this is the first time that Rosalie has spoken directly to her.

They arrive at Bella’s house, where Charlie rages at Edward. Bella, so exhausted she cannot stand to walk, nearly falls. Edward catches her and carries her to her room, promising to return later. Bella falls asleep as soon as Edward lays her on the bed.

Jane and Alec lead then into a large room where Aro, who is one of the Volturi, and other vampires mingle. Aro greets Bella and Alice as if he knows them, which surprises them, He seems quite excitable.

Aro expresses envy for Edward’s ability, and Edward explains the similarities and differences between his and Aro’s abilities. Caius and Marcus arrive. Although Marcus does not speak, he allows Aro to touch him in order to communicate the surprising intensity of Bella and Edward’s relationship.

Aro shows surprise at Edward’s ability to refrain from drinking the blood of his “la tua cantante” and refers to it as a waste. Aro marvels at how strongly Bella’s blood calls to Edward and says that Edward has surpassed Carlisle’s self-control, which Edward denies.

Ever curious, Aro wants to test his gift on Bella, since he and Edward share a similar gift. Aro’s gift does not work on Bella. Next, he wants to test Jane’s ability on Bella. Edward steps between Jane and Bella to protect her. Alice holds Bella back as Edward writhes on the floor in silent agony. Then Jane tries her gift on Bella, but fails. This angers Jane immensely.

Aro asks Edward, Alice and even Bella if they would like to join the Volturi. They all refuse. Caius insists that the law claims them, since Bella is human and knows their secret.

Edward argues, pointing out the humans involved in the Volturi operations. Caius explains that the difference is that they will change or kill the humans there and Edward plans to do neither to Bella.

Aro asks Edward if he intends to change Bella. Edward does not answer and will not allow Aro to touch him in order to read his mind. Bella believes that Edward would rather she die than become a vampire. However, Alice lets Aro read a future with Bella as a vampire. This satisfies Aro and he allows them to leave. Summary:
Alice and Bella rush to save Edward, driving through the winding, crowded streets of Volterra.  Alice tells Bella they have to reach the Palazzo dei Priori, or the clock tower.  She explains that Edward will be waiting in an alleyway, getting ready to step into the sunlight.  On their way, Alice bribes a guard with a thousand dollars to let them pass.  They make there way through the narrow roads until they reach the point where Bella has to take it on foot.

Bella darts from the car, pushing her way past the crowd.  When the clock tower starts to chime, Bella begins screaming Edward’s name in the small hope that he will hear her and see that she is alive.  Pushing through more people, she spots Edward and yells for him to look at her.  He doesn’t hear her, so Bella charges at him, flinging her self against his body.  Edward has difficultly believing that she is alive and keeps speaking as if they are both now dead.

Once Bella convinces Edward that they are both still alive, she states that they have to run before the Volturi arrive.  The warning didn’t come fast enough and Edward and Bella are soon met by two dark shapes.   Edward tries to tell them that their services aren’t needed any longer, but they insist that Edward and Bella follow them.  Edward wants them to let Bella go, but again, Felix says that Aro has requested they both come along.  Edward tried to fight for Bella’s freedom, but Jane arrives and he agrees.

As they follow the Volturi, Alice explains to Edward  that she had made a mistake with how she interpreted the vision of Bella cliff diving.  Edward keeps his arm around Bella, protecting her.  When they arrive at a small drain in the street, Alice slides down first to wait for Bella.  Edward helps Bella down and Alice catches her.  Edward joins them and again wraps his arms around Bella.  He strokes her face and holds her tight against him.

The dark tunnel slants downward.   They are led deeper and deeper into a cold, damp area.  There is a grate at the end made of thick iron bars.  On the other side is a room with a low, heavy door.  They enter, and Edward tenses up while still holding on to Bella.

Chapter Eighteen – The Funeral

Chapter Number: Eighteen

Chapter Name: The Funeral

Page Numbers: 404 – 423

Date of Chapter: Saturday March 18, 2006

Summary: In this chapter Jacob pays a surprise visit to Bella.  He has come to talk with her and ask her an important question.  The atmosphere is filled with tension as Bella is protective of her relationship with Alice and Jacob’s senses are on edge from Alice’s presence.  After a few snippy exchanges. Jacob explains to Bella that she can not be under the Pack’s protection in Forks as long as a Cullen is there.  In accordance with the treaty they can only protect their own lands in La Push.  He goes on to ask if "the rest" of them are coming back.  This is a very painful question for Bella.  She knows Alice’s visit doesn’t change anything.  And her reply to Jacob conveys that with a simple "No, they aren’t coming back."

Jacob turns to leave and Bella slumped against the kitchen counter in sadness.  Sadness for her loss of a best friend and recognition for there having been no other way.  Jacob quietly comes back to Bella’s side to comfort her, and apologize for hurting her again.  A sweet exchange between the two follows where both exchange apologies, promises of friendship, and dislike of the circumstances they find them selves in -a catch- 22.  As they hold each other Jacob takes Bella’s face in his hands and draws closer to her.  Bella is struck with confusion.  She hasn’t made her decision yet.  Sure she loved Jacob but was she ready to make him hers?  Was she ready to take this step,  a kiss?  But before she could answer that question the shrill ring of the phone broke through the thick atmosphere.

Jacob answered the phone and is body language told Bella all she needed to know.  It was a Cullen.  "He’s at the funeral." was Jacob’s last reply before hanging up the phone.  Bella demanded to know who it was and when Jacob told her it was Dr. Carlisle Cullen she was furious he had not let her talk to him.  This heated exchange didn’t last for long as Jacob tensed and quickly moved to the door to leave, only to find a paler than usual Alice on the other side of the door.  Bella instinctively moved between Alice and Jacob.  "What’s wrong Alice?" she asked.  Then in response to Alice’s one word reply, "Edward."  Bella collapsed.

Through the next flurry of moments filled with Jacob’s profanities and accusations at Alice, Bella come to.  She listened as Alice phones Rosalie and a heated exchange between the sisters follows.  Bella is confused.  She is getting broken information and the two of them, Alice and Bella, begin to sort through the fragmented pieces of information to reveal what happened.  They figure out that Rosalie called Edward to tell him Bella was dead.  And the "Dr. Carlisle Cullen" who called was in fact Edward.  The response from Jacob on the other end of the phone "He’s at the funeral" only served to confirm Bella’s death.  Edward’s phone was found by a stranger who answered the phone when Alice called it.  Edward had dumped the phone and gone to Italy.

The Volturi, a powerful family who ruled the city of Volterra and had the power to give Edward what he wanted most.  Death.  This information was even more confusing to Bella.  He left her.  He didn’t want her any more.  Why should he care?  None of that mattered now.  Bella had to save Edward.  Alice instructs her to write a letter to Charlie and get her I.D. and passport while she arranged the flight.  They were going to Italy.  Without hesitation Bella was going, Alice had tried to explain the dangers, Jacob had protested, but Bella was going.  She would stop Edward.

Bella’s heart panged in regret as she remembered the last time she ran out of the house like this.  Last time it was running from danger.  This time she ran toward it.  She tore through the house, stifled an arguing Alice and Jacob, and turned to lock up the house.  Jacob had promised to take care of Charlie, treaty or no, but he still pleaded with her on the porch…"Don’t go."  In desperation, worried this would be the last time she would ever see Jacob again she threw her arms around him and then kissed the palm of his hand, before dashing off to join Alice in the now revving Mercedes.  She couldn’t bare to look him in the eye before, but as Alice spun the car around in a squeal of shrieking tires Bella called out to him once more. "Take care of Charlie!", but Jacob wasn’t there.  Only a shred of white tennis shoe remained on the edge of the forest.

Summary:
Bella is overcome with equal parts relief and joy to see that the vampire standing in her hallway is none other than Alice Cullen. She rushes to embrace her friend, gasping and breaking down into tears. Finally she has a tangible link back to the life she’d been missing these past few months. Alice tries to quiet and comfort Bella, pulling the considerably larger girl to the sofa and sitting Bella upon her lap, murmuring quietly that “Everything’s okay.”

Eventually Bella calms enough to notice a strain in Alice’s voice and posture. She looks up to see Alice facing away from her, her expression tense, her eyes pitch black. Bella realizes that Alice is thirsty and apologizes quickly. Alice replies that she is the one to blame, and should not have let herself go so long without hunting. Her manner quickly changes as she glares in Bella’s direction and asks just how it is that Bella is still alive.

At once, Bella understands why Alice has come. Alice had seen a vision of the events of that afternoon on the beach;  she had seen Bella fall from the cliff into the violent water below. But no sooner had Bella confirmed this fact aloud, than Alice curtly disagreed. She just seen Bella fall from the cliff-side, she’d seen her jump.  Alice thought that the jump was an attempt to commit suicide.

Bella scanned her mind and tried to think of a way to explain her actions to Alice, but she isn’t fast enough. She felt a shocking jolt to her raw emotional state, as Alice began  her reprimand, imitating Edward’s voice. She rushed out that despite promising Edward that she wouldn’t purposely try to look into Bella’s life and future, that sometimes her mental abilities couldn’t be controlled that way. She goes on to explain that she’d seen the vision of Bella jumping from the tall cliff, and though she knew that she would not be in time to save Bella’s life, she wanted to come and see if she could be any help or comfort to Charlie. She’d seen Bella enter the water and drown, and that was all.

Alice then asks Bella if she’d given any thought to what killing herself would do to Charlie, but when she mention mentions Edward, Bella stops her short. She tries to convince Alice that she’d had no intention of killing herself, that the cliff diving had been something she was merely doing for fun. It’s quite obvious at once that Alice is not convinced.

But as she looks at the vampire’s skeptical face, another thought suddenly occurs to her. How was it possible that Alice had seen all of that, but not Jacob rushing in to pull her back to the shore? Her expression clearly states that Alice is troubled by this question as well. As Bella explains the story of how Jacob rescued her, she watches Alice’s face contort into many different emotions rapidly. Bella is even further baffled as her friend leaned in mumbling under her breath about something being “ridiculous” and purposefully smelled her shoulder a few times. Alice ignores Bella’s demand to know what she is doing and instead freezes Bella with an unexpected question.

Alice asks Bella who it was outside the door that she’d heard her arguing with moments earlier. Bella hesitates, she is unsure as to whether or not she should tell Alice the whole story about Jacob. Eventually she decides that since she’d told Jacob the entire story about the Cullens, that it would be only fair to be honest with Alice as well. Finally, and with great reluctance, Bella informs Alice that Jacob, her new best friend, is a werewolf.

The vampire is at first stunned. Vampires and werewolves… Bella sure knew how to choose nice friends. Upon finding out that Jacob is also a very young werewolf, Alice becomes even more agitated. She talks about what dangerous animals they are, causing Bella to half-heartedly defend Jacob and the other wolves. Alice is buying none of it, her mind is made up on the issue already. Her lecture goes on into how much of a magnet for danger that Bella still is… not even knowing the half of it.

Bella then informs Alice about the confrontation between she and Laurent, and that Victoria is back and stalking out a chance to get her revenge. Alice’s manner becomes even darker and more threatening, more so than Bella had ever seen from her, and she asks Bella to tell her everything. Bella complies and, with the exception of a few conveniently cast-aside details that she feared Alice would be angry with her for, Bella fills Alice in on all of the things that had been happening in Forks since the Cullens had left, right up through that afternoon and Harry Clearwater’s passing.

When Bella is at last finished with her story, Alice seems quieted, and regretfully admits that she probably shouldn’t have interfered or come at all. Taking that to mean that Alice was thinking of leaving straight away, Bella feels a heavy panic set back upon her. She physically latches onto Alice’s clothing and begs her not to leave. Bella’s response clearly bothers the vampire, and Alice hurries once again to try and comfort and calm her. Bella is clearly an emotional mess. Alice agrees to stay, at least for the night.

The phone rings in the kitchen, and thinking it must be her father, Bella rushes in to answer it. The voice she hears on the other end of the line is a very short, and to the point Jacob – not Charlie. Jacob explains that he was only calling to make sure that Bella hadn’t been killed by the vampire who’d been hiding inside her house. Before Bella can assure him that it was only Alice, and that she wouldn’t hurt her, Jacob had hung up the phone on her. Leaving no chance for any fence-mending at the moment.

Having a thirsty vampire/unusually good smelling human sleepover, made it a necessity for Alice to hunt right away. She promised Bella that she would be back within an hour. Bella busies herself with a few of her own human necessities in the meantime, showering, preparing some food for herself and Charlie, and even making up a guest-bed on the sofa for Alice.

True to her word, Alice is back even earlier than promised and she and Bella sit together. Afraid to ask, but still needing to know, Bella finds out the Edward doesn’t know Alice has come… he isn’t living with the other Cullens now. Bella takes that to mean that he’s out pursuing his “distractions,” and she intentionally lets the subject of him drop. They begin to discuss the other members of Alice’s family, just as they hear Charlie approaching. Bella meets her father at the door, finding him weary and exhausted. He is surprised by their houseguest, but upon hearing that it was only Alice who was in town, he says that he is glad that Bella will have some company while he is so busy doing all that he can for Sue Clearwater and her children. He hurries off to the kitchen and the food Bella had prepared, and then upstairs to retire for the night, leaving Alice and Bella sitting together of the sofa again. Soon after the day’s events begin to take their toll on Bella as well, she explains that “near-death experiences do that” to her. Despite her desire to sit up and talk to Alice for hours, she soon slips off to sleep.

Bella awakens early the next morning to find herself laying on the sofa-bed that she’d made up for Alice. She overhears Charlie and Alice talking in the kitchen, and chooses to lay still to hear their conversation. She hears Alice asking her father “how bad” something was, and immediately thinks they are talking about Harry’s family. All too soon however, she finds out that is not at all the case. Charlie tells Alice about the extent of his daughter’s suffering in the days following Edward Cullen’s goodbye. Bella had been in a near catatonic state, not eating, sleeping, speaking, or moving at all. Charlie, feeling helpless and afraid, had Renee come to take Bella back to Florida with her, thinking that being away from Forks would make things easier on their daughter. The result of that visit had brought Bella around from her unresponsive state, but only to fly off into a fury, screaming that she wouldn’t leave. In the months the followed, Bella began her zombie phase and did all she could to hold up a good enough front to appease her father… doing whatever she could to make him think she was well enough to stay at home in Forks. She then was faced with the knowledge that all of her trying had been in vain, her dad hadn’t been at all fooled. He had lived and suffered every worry and ache of Bella’s pain along her in silence. This knowledge hit her like a speeding truck. It had been nothing but a wasted effort in the end.

As Bella tries to take this revelation in, she then hears Alice’s quiet voice apologizing to Charlie for all that had happened. His father’s voice then changes, growing hard. He makes it astounding clear that while he doesn’t blame Alice, he does blame someone. Edward. He begins to not so subtly talk about Jacob and how good he’d been to Bella, how much better she’d seemed to become from being around him. How much better for Bella that had Jacob had been as opposed to… yeah. Charlie seems a little taken back when, instead of arguing in her brother’s defense, Alice simply agrees with him about how good it was that Jacob was around to help Bella out of her depression. This causes his harsher tone to fade again, and with more honesty, Charlie confides in Alice about his worry that Bella might not ever truly get over this.

He goes on to ask about Edward, and if he’d be returning. Alice tells him that Edward has no idea that she has come back to Forks, and that when she’d last spoke to her brother, that he’d been somewhere in South America. Seeming somewhat contented by that, Charlie allows the subject to lapse and Bella decides that she’s done enough eavesdropping for one morning.

With Charlie having returned to La Push to help out with Harry’s funeral arrangements, Bella and Alice had the full day to talk and catch up. Alice tells Bella that all of the Cullens are now living in Ithaca, New York. She goes on to inform Bella that Carlisle was working at a hospital as well as teaching at Cornell University, where Jasper was also taking classes as a philosophy student. Rosalie and Emmett had returned from traveling, Esme was busy with a restoring project, and that she, herself, had been successful in digging up some of the mysteries of her own hidden past.  Alice had uncovered her human name, date of birth, so-called death, and the fact that she’d had a younger sister. Bella feels comforted in hearing about the family that she’d once her considered her own, and lost. She is relieved that Alice seemed to know well enough not to mention her brother, the prodigal son.

Early the next morning, Bella and Alice both pretend to sleep as Charlie leaves to house to attend the funeral. Bella decides to spend the morning getting caught up on some long-neglected housework while she and Alice continue to chat. She was busily scrubbing out the bathtub when she suddenly heard the doorbell ring below. Bella looked up, surprised, to see Alice’s usually serene face troubled. Her surprise turns to downright confusion as Alice states that she has “a fairly good guess who” it was at the door, and that she had better leave for the time being. Alice? A guess?!? Alice then tells her that going by her inability to see him the last time, that she was sure that the person at the door was Jacob, or one of the other werewolves. It’s then that Bella realizes what this all means: Alice cannot see the wolves in her visions. And Alice didn’t like that fact, not one bit.

The doorbell rings again, as Bella tells Alice that she is there as her guest and doesn’t have to leave. Alice laughs and kisses Bella on the cheek, before hurrying off in a flash.

Important Information Learned:
First and foremost: We have Cullen interaction! Hallelujah!

Edward is not living with the rest of the Cullen family.

Alice was not in support of Edward’s plan to leave Bella behind in Forks, and tried to reason with him.

The natural prejudice that Alice feels towards werewolves is much the same, and just as strong, as how the Quileute’s feel about the vampires.

Bella was unsuccessful in attempting to shield Charlie from the amount of pain she was in after the Cullens left Forks, and he blames Edward for all his daughter has been through.

Alice and Bella discover that Alice cannot see werewolves in her visions. Alice finds this fact very disturbing.
