Chapter Ten – The Meadow

Chapter Number: Ten

Chapter Name: The Meadow

Page Numbers: 225-251

Date of Chapter: February 23rd – March 4th 2006

Summary: Bella is waiting for Jacob to call but he doesn’t, so instead she calls him.  The first time Bella calls Jacob, Billy answers and tells her they did see a doctor, but for some reason she doesn’t believe him.  She continues to try and reach Jacob, but the following two days there is no answer at the Black residence.

Bella ignores Jacob’s request to call first, but instead heads to their home to find it empty.  She assumes they are at the hospital and that Jake must be very sick.  She stops by the hospital but finds that neither Billy nor Jake have been there.   As soon as Charlie gets home, she makes him phone Harry Clearwater.    Charlie finds out that Harry has been having heart trouble and was at the hospital himself, he also discovers that there had been some phone line problems and that Billy did indeed take Jake to a local doctor and he has mono.

Charlie is visibly concerned about Harry so instead of pestering him, Bella goes to do her own research and finds that most of the symptoms of mononucleosis do not match Jake’s.  Bella is suspicious of Billy, but can’t pinpoint why.  She is disappointed to find that mono could last a month and decides that since the disease wasn’t infectious she’d wait a week before getting “pushy”.

Bella survives the entire week without Jacob, but only barely.  Her dreams became difficult again and she’s feeling the pain in her chest again, worse than before.  Finally on Saturday morning she calls Jacob.  Billy answers and informs her that Jacob is out with friends and that he didn’t have mono after all.   Bella eventually hangs up with Billy feeling hurt and disappointed.  Bella assumes that Jacob changed his mind about the advice she gave him and that he’s decided to stay away from her after all.

Before Charlie leaves to go fishing he requests that she stay away from the forest, as he is worried about bear attacks since a hiker went missing recently.   Bella decides that she cannot spend the day at home, and instead chooses to spend the day looking for the meadow.  After hiking for a while suffering the pain of her loss, she unexpectedly walks right into the meadow.  Bella is overcome with feelings of disappointment as she realizes that this place doesn’t hold the same magic it once did.   She is glad that Jacob isn’t with her, as she would have a difficult time explaining why she was on her knees clutching at her sides.

As Bella is about to flee from the meadow, a figure appears out of the trees.  Momentarily she believes it is Edward then realizes that it is another vampire, and then finally she recognizes that it is Laurent.   Bella is irrationally happy to see him, and believes he must have changed his hunting habits since going to live in Alaska with the other “good-vampire” coven.  Laurent tells her about his stay in Alaska and how upon arriving in Forks he has been by the Cullen house only to find it empty.  Bella soon realizes the danger she is in, as Laurent’s eyes indicate his diet hasn’t changed – they are a sinister red.

Bella hears Edward’s voice in her head telling her to lie so that she can somehow escape from Laurent.   She tries her best to scare Laurent away with the threat that Edward would come after him, but Laurent sees right through Bella’s ruse.  He confesses to her that he liked Tanya and Irina from Alaska, but that the restrictions were difficult for him.

Laurent reveals that he is here as a favor to Victoria.    He tells her that Victoria is out for revenge and though Laurent doesn’t agree with Victoria’s logic to kill a human, he is thirsty and believes he’s sparing Bella immeasurable pain by killing her now, before Victoria gets to her.  Edward’s voice in Bella’s head continues to coach her, suggesting she threaten him and then finally to beg.   Before Laurent can spring, five wolves prowl out of the forest, and chase down Laurent.

Bella can’t understand why the wolves were able to scare Laurent away, but she composes herself, and flees from the forest.   She finally makes it home, still shaky from the near death experience.  Once at home, Charlie sees her and realizes that something is wrong.  She explains to him how she went hiking and came across the bear that they were looking for, only it wasn’t a bear, but five huge wolves.

Bella reflects on the day and is horrified at the thought that Victoria would eventually come for her, or worse hurt Charlie who was only a room away.  She hopes in her mind that out of some strange luck, the wolves would be able to catch up with the indestructible vampire and destroy him.

Chapter Nine – Third Wheel

Chapter Number: Nine

Chapter Name: Third Wheel

Page Numbers: 201-224

Date of Chapter: February 14-19, 2007

Summary: Bella enjoys her time with Jacob so much that she realizes she’s no longer miserable. As Bella’s riding skills improve the danger level decreases, and Edward’s voice disappears. In order to hear it again, Bella becomes more obsessed with finding the meadow.

On Valentines Day, Jacob offers Bella a box of conversation hearts and asks her to be his Valentine. Feeling uncomfortable, she uses humor to reassert the ever-blurry boundary of their relationship. Bella invites Jacob to a movie and makes sure he knows it’s a group activity.  The next day, Bella begins to assemble a group for the movie. Mike is excited to go until he realizes it’s not a date. Lauren and Jessica refuse to go and manage to convince everyone but Ben and Angela to stay away as well.

On the day of the movie Bella gets home from school and finds Jacob in her driveway with his Rabbit finished. She gives him a congratulatory high five, and Jacob uses the moment to hold her hand.  When Mike pulls into the driveway, Jacob recognizes him from First Beach as the guy who thought Bella was his girlfriend. He asked Bella if Mike is still under the same delusion and Bella points out that some people are slow to take a hint. Jacob counters that sometimes it’s good to not give up.

The group dwindles to three since Angela has the stomach flu and Ben won’t go without her. Bella becomes upset when she realizes she’s now alone with Mike and Jacob.  Her fears are confirmed when, during the movie, both boys position their hands so they can hold hers if it comes down on the armrest. Bella and Jacob are laughing at how terrible the movie is when Mike runs out to the bathroom. Jacob begrudgingly checks on him and realizes it wasn’t the blood in the movie; Mike is actually sick.

As they wait for Mike to emerge, Jacob sits by Bella and begins to flirt, but Bella shoots him down. Jacob presses the issue of her feeling for him. Bella confesses that she likes him better then anyone, and with this ray of hope Jacob tells Bella that he won’t give up.
Mike finally emerges from the bathroom and looks awful. Jacob agrees to drive them home but grabs a popcorn bucket in case Mike feels sick again. When they get outside Bella is freezing but Jacob isn’t bothered at all. She feels his forehead and says he feels really feverish. He informs Bella that he feels fine and puts his arm around her to keep her warm.

During the ride home, Bella has an internal debate. She wants Jacob to stay clear of her romantically, but he is so comforting to her that she is afraid to push the issue so far that he leaves her.  Jacob drops Mike off at home and confesses he isn’t feeling well himself. He promises to call as soon as he gets home; then, in a sudden display of emotion, he promises Bella that he will always be there for and she can always count on him. She assures Jacob that she knows and already counts on him a lot. His reaction makes her feel even guiltier. He leaves with an odd look on his face.

Bella debates with herself again. She wishes that Jacob were her brother so they could have a close friendship without having to worry about him wanting more. She also realizes that she will never be able to love him romantically; part of her will always love Edward.

Bella waits for Jacob’s call but it never comes. She finally calls his house and is informed by Billy that he is sick and to not visit. The next morning Bella has the flu and she spends the day on the bathroom floor. By the time she wakes up the next morning she is fine.  Bella figures Jacob must be feeling better too, and calls to see how he’s doing; he isn’t any better. She apologizes for exposing him to the flu; he informs her he was glad to go and it isn’t her fault he‘s sick. Jacob tells her he doesn’t think he has the same thing she did. Bella offers to bring him something; however, just like Billy he briskly tells her not to come. He agrees to call her when he feels better. She says he’ll see her soon and he tells her to wait for his call. Before he hangs up Jacob whispers her name.

Chapter Name: Adrenaline

Page Numbers: 181-200

Date of Chapter: Jan 25th – 30th

Summary: After Jacob manages to get the two motorcycles into riding-shape, he takes Bella out for a test-drive. On her first attempt, she was distracted by Edward’s voice speaking to her, and the bike fell on top of her. On Bella’s second try she managed to drive a considerable way down a road before her bike swerved off into the trees. The bike landed on top of Bella again and Jacob came running down the street and pulled it off of her.

Bella got a cut on her head and Jacob tries to convince Bella to go to the hospital. Bella convinces Jacob to take her to her house so she can change clothes so that the story of her tripping in Jacob’s garage and hitting her head on a hammer would be believable. They didn’t want to have to explain to Charlie about the motorcycles.

During a conversation with Charlie about how she got her wound, Charlie suggested that she stay out of Jacob’s garage completely. Horrified at the prospect of not being able to have the opportunity to hear Edward’s voice again by riding the motorcycles, Bella told Charlie that she’d received her cut hiking. Her dad then warned her about the “big bears” that were out in the forest, and advised her to steer clear of them entirely.

Bella tells Jacob about the encounter with Charlie, and he requests the they stop riding for at least a week in order to get Charlie off their backs. Bella then decides that, in order to hear Edward’s voice without the bikes that she and Jacob could go on a search for The Meadow. So, on a Saturday, they make their first excursion into the forest in an attempt to find The Meadow. After joking around with Billy about seeing the “bears” in the forest, Bella and Jacob set out.

They hiked until sunset without reaching their destination, but both resolved to try again soon.

“Nothing. I just hadn’t realized before. Did you know, you’re sort of beautiful?”
~ Bella to Jacob.

“Maybe we’ll see the super bear,” Jacob joked, eyes on his design. I glanced at Billy swiftly, fearing a Charlie-style reaction.
But Billy just laughed at his son. “Maybe you should take a jar of honey, just in case.” Jake chuckled. “Hope you new boots are fast, Bella. One little jar isn’t going to keep a hungry bear occupied for long.”
“I only have to be faster than you.”
~Billy, Bella and Jacob discussing a hiking trip

“I hope we see that bear tomorrow. I’m sort of disappointed about that.”
“Yes, me too,” I agreed sarcastically. “Maybe we’ll get lucky tomorrow and something will eat us!”
~Bella and Jacob after hiking

“I would have figured you for a trail kind of girl.”
“Not me.” I smiled bleakly. “I’m a rebel.”
~Bella and Jacob about to embark on the search for the meadow

“Bears don’t want to eat people. We don’t taste that good.” He grinned at me in the dark cab. “Of course, you might be an exception. I bet you’d taste good.”
“Thanks so much,” I said, looking away. He wasn’t the first person to tell me that.
~Jacob and Bella

“You want me to let go of the grenade?” I asked in disbelief. No wonder he was moving back.
~ Bella, after she was told to ease up on the clutch.

A few days after gracefully turning a date with Mike into a friendly movie night the following week, she hears from Jacob that the bikes are ready. While driving out to their practice spot, she sees cliff divers and learns that they are Sam Uley and his “followers”. Jacob tells her his fears about his friends being recruited into some type of harmful group and is upset that he doesn’t understand what is going on with them.  He wonders why Sam seems to be fixated on him all of a sudden and why his old friends are now ignoring him.

But, wouldn’t it be worse if there were no change? If the couches sat just as I’d last seen them, the paintings on the walls—worse still, the piano on it’s low platform? It would be second only to the house disappearing all together, to see that there was no physical possession that tied them in anyway. That everything remained, untouched and forgotten, behind them. Just like me.

Chapter Six – Friends

Chapter Number: Six

Chapter Name: Friends

Page Numbers: 137-158 (Hardcover)

Date of Chapter: Sunday, January 18th – Monday, January 19th, 2006

Summary: Bella returns to Jacob’s garage, where he is keeping the motorcycles. Jacob keeps the conversation flowing, describing his sophomore year, with his two best friends: Quil and Embry. Before long, his friends make their entrance. Jacob tells them about the project he is working on with Bella, to fix the motorcycle. It piques the boys’ interest, and Bella finds it hard to follow all the technical jargon. Even so, she rues having to leave to go home, and make dinner for Charlie. However, she makes plans with Jacob to see him tomorrow, and buy more parts.

As Bella leaves, she hears Jacob’s best friends teasing him—about his relationship with Bella—and is surprised to find herself genuinely laughing. She feels buoyant, and arrives home before Charlie. As she’s preparing dinner, she’s happier than usual, smiling, grinning. Charlie notices, but is hesitant; he cautiously asks how things went with Jacob. Bella mentions the Volkswagen Jacob is working on, but not the motorcycles.

Bella avoids going to her room for as long as she can, and goes to sleep expecting the pain. But she doesn’t even dream.

She is hesitant about what this means. Charlie is being just as careful. At breakfast she tells him that she’ll be seeing Jacob again, and he lets her go. She invites Billy to watch the game with Harry and Charlie; one less witness to her clandestine activities. Jacob approves of her foresight, and they leave to get the needed parts.  They drive in Bella’s truck, and Jacob notices the torn-out stereo.

They find usable parts at the dump, and drive two hours to Checker Auto Parts, in Hoquiam. During the drive, Jacob talks more about his friends; he mentions how Quil audaciously asked out a senior’s steady girlfriend. Bella is genuinely curious about his life, despite the difference in their ages. But Bella tries to make clear the distinction that she is older; she compares it to dog years, making Bella at least twelve years older than Jacob. They continue to argue about their correct ages, and Bella almost forgets why she is with Jacob in the first place. She is still determined to be reckless, and having Jacob along for the ride is just an added benefit.

When they return to Forks, Jacob arranges the auto parts. Quil and Embry do not interrupt this time, but, after night falls, Billy calls for them. Jacob and Bella hurry outside, holding hands and laughing, and Charlie is there as well. His eyes are wide, seeing them holding hands.

Once inside Bella sees that the Clearwater family has joined them for dinner: Harry Clearwater, and his wife and children. It is an awkward fit around the small kitchen table, but Bella enjoys herself, and doesn’t want to leave. But it starts raining, and the party ends; Bella drives Charlie home. Charlie is pleased about the progress she’s making, but like a parent, adds that she should be sure to do her homework when she goes to see Jacob tomorrow.

Again, Bella worries about having to sleep. She knows that two nights of peace in a row is hoping for too much. Avoiding bedtime, she checks her email, and tells Reneé about her day.  Feeling like a bad daughter, she realizes that she hasn’t given a proper email to her mother in forever, and tries to make up for it.

When Bella sleeps, the dream comes again, but it’s slightly different than before. In this dream she wasn’t alone in the woods. Sam Uley was there, in the periphery, shifting in shape. He stands and watches Bella on the forest floor, not offering help.

Charlie stares at Bella during breakfast, still not quite able to believe that her zombie-state hasn’t returned. School, however, is the exact opposite; no one pays attention to her and Bella feels as if she’s invisible. Bella tries to catch up with conversation, to re-ingratiate herself with her old school friends.

Much has changed in the last four months. Lauren cut her hair to a pixie cut, and there are more additions to their lunch table: Katie Marshall, and Austin Marks. Angela had let her hair grow out of her layers. Her boyfriend, Ben, is sick with the stomach flu; and Angela is talking about what they did last weekend. They had been planning to picnic, but half-way there they saw a large black bear. Everyone at the table is incredulous, but it’s an even a greater shock when Bella stands up for Angela. She affirms the sighting, mentioning what the hiker at Newton’s Outfitters had seen. After stilted silence, conversation resumes; and it’s clear that Bella is “back”.

It’s exactly one year since Bella’s first day in Forks.

~Jacob, Bella, Quil and Embry in Jacob’s garage, pg. 140-141

“Jacob was simply a perpetually happy person, and he carried that happiness with him like an aura, sharing it with whoever was near him. ~Bella, at the breakfast table with Charlie, pg. 152

“I remembered the first day I’d come to Forks High School—how desperately I’d wished that I could turn gray, fade into the wet concrete of the sidewalk like an oversized chameleon. It seemed I was getting that wish answered, a year late.”

Bella tries to make it clear that she is older than Jacob, putting a bridge between romantic notions.

Even though Jacob is making Bella feel happier, she is still determined to be reckless, and break promises.

People are seeing huge, black “bears” in the area around Forks.

There is a stomach flu going around the students.

Bella chose Jessica for her “night out” on purpose. Angela was much too perceptive for her purposes.

Angela and Mike are the only ones who seem relieved and/or excited by Bella’s “return.”

Even Bella finds it hard to believe how much has changed when she wasn’t noticing. Even so, in the essential ways that matter, people are still the same.

Chapter Five – Cheater

Chapter Number: Five

Chapter Name: Cheater

Page Numbers: 120-136 (Hardcover)

Date of Chapter: Saturday, January 17th, 2006

Summary: The chapter opens with the first time we actually see Bella at work with Mike. It’s nearing closing time and they are simply waiting for the last two customers to make their purchases and leave the store. But they don’t seem to be concentrating much on hiking gear. Instead, they’re arguing about a monstrous black bear one of them claimed to have seen. Mike suggests Bella heads home and Bella reluctantly complies.

Bella rushes out into the rain and gets in her truck. As she begins to drive away from the store we learn about the nightmare that has plagued Bella since Edward’s departure. She explains it as “nothing, really. Only nothing.” She searches and searches until she finally realizes that is “nothing to search for, and nothing to find. That there never had been anything more than just this empty, dreary wood, and there never would be anything more for me.”

She realizes that now that she’s woken up from whatever numb state she had been surviving in for the past few months, she’ll be more prone to give into the thoughts she had been pushing away and the pain that she was carefully avoiding. She remembers Edward’s promise – “It will be as if I’d never existed.” – and has to stop the car because of the pain the memory brings up. She remembers the promises she made to him, too; to not be reckless and stupid. She’s distracted from her pain by the “hopeless proposition” of trying to be reckless in Forks and begins to ponder ways in which she could actually accomplish her goal. She turns off her engine, looks around for the first time, and finds herself sitting between the Cheneys’ house and the Markses’.

“Sometimes, kismet happens.”

As she is looking around at her surroundings, Bella sees a hand-printed “FOR SALE, AS IS” sign next to two rusting motorcycles. She instantly realizes that this is probably the most reckless thing she could do. “Reckless and stupid. Those were Charlie’s two very favorite words to apply to motorcycles.” She marches up to the Markses’ front door and knocks. The door is opened by the younger Marks boy whose name she doesn’t remember. She asks about the bikes and he helps her load both of them onto the back of her truck. He asked what she was going to do with them and she says that she might take them to Dowling’s repair shop. He scoffs and reminds her that he would probably charge more than they were worth working. After that statement, Bella suddenly remembers that Jacob Black builds cars. She forms a plan.

Bella rushes home to call Charlie at the station. He immediately assumes that something is wrong, but after she promises nothing is he gives her directions to the Blacks’ house. She drives there and Jacob meets her outside. Bella feels an unfamiliar sense of enthusiasm when Jacob smiles at her and suddenly remembers how much she liked Jacob Black. They catch up on various things and Bella notes that he’s grown again, now to an impossible 6’ 5”.

Bella says hello to Billy, sidesteps his attempts to invite Charlie over for dinner, and follows Jacob out to his “garage.” In the garage is Jacob’s much talked about 1986 Volkswagen Rabbit. He announces that after his father made good on his promise last year to buy him a master cylinder, he’s almost done with the car. Bella quickly changes the subject to the motorcycles. It works. Jacob is pleased by the challenge of fixing up the bikes and has no qualms about keeping their existence secret from both of their fathers. Bella promises to pay for all necessary parts by skimming from her college fund and Jacob readily agrees.

“Like I’d told Jessica after the movie, there was never any doubt that I would have nightmares.”
~Bella Swan, pg. 122

“My nightmare probably wouldn’t even frighten someone else. Nothing jumped out and screamed, “Boo!” There were no zombies, no ghosts, no psychopaths. There was nothing, really. Only nothing. Just the endless maze of moss covered trees….”
~Bella Swan, pg. 122-123

“Sometimes, kismet happens.”
~Bella as she finds her way to be reckless and stupid, pg. 126

“I wanted to be stupid and reckless, and I wanted to break promises. Why stop at one?”
~Bella Swan, pg. 127

“I was strangely comfortable here. It was familiar, but only distantly. There were no painful reminders of the recent past.”
~Bella after seeing Jacob’s house again, pg. 133

“What are you, forty?”
~Jacob Black teasing Bella, pg.135

“Only a teenage boy would agree to this: deceiving both of our parents while repairing dangerous vehicles using money meant for my college education. He didn’t see anything wrong with that picture. Jacob was a gift from the gods.”
~Bella after Jacob agrees to fix the bikes, pg. 136

Important Information learned:
Bella has nightly nightmares revolving around the night that Edward left and her fruitless search for him.

One of the bikes Bella picked up is a Harley Spirit.

Bella will be using some of her college fund to pay for the bikes’ repairs.

chapter Four – Waking Up

Chapter Number: Four

Chapter Name: Waking Up

Page Numbers: 93- 119 (Hardcover)

Date of Chapter:  January 16th, 2006

Summary:  The departure of Edward sends Bella into an emotionally unresponsive state.  After several months in this numb, trance-like condition, Bella sufficiently manages to shun many of her teenage friends with her blatantly antisocial behavior. Meanwhile, Charlie’s unease regarding Bella’s apparent lifelessness brings him to the edge, and he urges her to move back with her mother in Florida. In order to placate her father, and have him retract his concerns, Bella promises to organize a social outing for that evening. Ultimately deciding on Jessica as her companion, together they make plans to see a horror movie entitled Dead End.

Bella is unconcerned about socializing with Jess as they ride up to Port Angeles, and she practices many tactics in order to keep from talking. When the movie starts, Bella is horrified at the romantic beginning, and excuses herself to the concession stand to avoid drudging up painful memories. Bella watches the bulk of the movie without reaction. In the climatic moment, the camera transitions between the heroine of the movie and the monster- the zombie.

The gruesome ending forces Bella to make a horrible revelation- that she was the latter of the two. Bella leaves the screening room early and sits just outside the theater, reflecting on her unfortunate discovery. Her mind wanders to what she wished her future held for her, being a vampire rather than a zombie. She promptly discards the thought because of its unpleasant connotations.  Jess questions Bella as to why she left. Bella claims cowardice which surprises Jessica because she didn’t witness any outward signs of Bella’s fear.

They then decide to go out to eat somewhere. On the way to their destination Bella again lets Jessica control the conversation. Bella doesn’t notice when Jess suddenly stops talking, nor does she immediately realize the reason for the silence. Eventually though, her eyes fall upon the cause of the disturbance; just across the street, four men lounge outside a bar. Bella stops walking when she realizes how similar this night’s circumstances are to her last excursion in Port Angeles. Although still unsure, at the moment she thinks that these are the same individuals that she encountered previously.

Bella ignores Jessica’s pleads to stay away, and she continues to cross the street.  The danger of the situation sends adrenaline coursing through Bella’s veins. The adrenaline is not accompanied by the usual fear as Bella closes the distance between her and the men. Halfway across the street, Jessica catches up with Bella and tries, unsuccessfully, to get her back across the street. Jessica’s question regarding her seemingly suicidal behavior reminds Bella of why she’s still living. She feels obligated to go on living for her parent’s sake, but more so for the promise that she made Edward long ago. As she realizes this, she feels guilty because she is doing exactly what Edward requested her not to do- putting herself into a dangerous situation.

After she dismisses Jessica and turns her attention back to the men, a familiar voice rings inside her head- Edward’s voice. It tells her to turn around. The voice does not bring Bella the pain she thought it would, instead it brings clarity. Her surroundings become instantly sharper, and she notices the smells and sights that she hadn’t initially. His voice urges her to keep her promise and to keep safe. Then it begins to fade away. She believes that the familiarity of the situation is what triggered her hallucination. Bella then comes up with two possibilities as to why this was occurring to her. Her first conclusion is that she is insane and merely hearing voices in her head. Her other explanation is that her subconscious mind is giving her exactly what she wanted.

The sound of his voice pulls her out of the numb state that she’s forced herself into for the past several months. Bella is extremely thankful for being able to hear his voice once again, and she is even more thankful to her subconscious for preserving the sound of his voice.  After a few moments of deliberation, Bella decides that she would rather encourage the hallucination rather than have it disappear entirely, and she takes another step toward the men. To her relief, the voice resonates within in her mind once again. One of the four men outside the bar calls out to Bella. She converses with them briefly and rejects their invitations. She turns around and rejoins Jessica, who is clearly outraged at Bella’s behavior.

They finally make it to McDonald’s, and unlike previously, Jessica does not control the conversation. In fact, she hardly speaks at all. Eventually, they make it to Jessica’s car and she turns up the radio in order to avoid conversation with Bella, but Bella is distracted by her thoughts and is glad to have some time alone to contemplate things. She is still surprised that the numbness hasn’t returned. She’s more alert than she’s been for a long time. Bella thinks about how she struggles not to forget about Edward, but how she can not think of him, for fear of the pain that her recollections will evoke. She concludes that she will be able to endure anything as long as she knows that Edward exists somewhere in the world. Bella then reveals her reason for not wanting to go to Jacksonville like Charlie wanted. Being in Forks, with its familiar environment makes it easier for Bella to convince herself that he actually did exist at one point in time.

Charlie confronts Bella when she returns home about where she was.  When Bella responds, Charlie notices that Bella has finally woken up. Bella goes up to her room and lies in her bed. She then experiences the crippling pain that she’s been expecting all along. She tries to retreat back into her numbness, but it doesn’t come. She then comes to realize that she can handle the crippling emotions. And this realization helps her grasp the fact that she is uncertain about what her future holds for her.

Summary: In this chapter we find Bella sensing something is definitely wrong with Edward.  His eyes betray his actions as he distances himself emotionally from Bella.  While she deals with an emotionally disconnected Edward she is slapped with the news that her best friend, Alice, has left with Jasper, because of the horrifying events of her birthday party.  Our dear Bella then begins to cling to a life that she longs desperately to be apart of, only to get shut out at every turn.  Her fears are realized when she finds her self at the forest’s edge with Edward, her one true love.  Only to discover that he is finished with her, he and his family are leaving Forks forever. Leaving her, alone.

A desperate run after Edward through the forest leaves her lost and crippled emotionally beyond repair.  Bella lay there unable to move for hours, night came, and then the dawn, but there was always rain.  As she lay there on the forest floor she could hear the voices calling her name, but she hadn’t the strength to reply to their calls.  This is when we are formally introduced to the ever-mysterious Sam Uley.  Who finds Bella and carries her to the arms of her waiting father, Charlie.  Dr. Gerandy confirms Bella’s fears as he confirms the Cullen’s departure to Charlie.

After drifting off to sleep Bella is awoken by a phone call.  A phone call that proclaims a Quileute Tribe celebration, in honor of the Cullen’s departure from the area.  This news only serves to force Bella into her current Edward-less reality.  After a difficult questioning by her father, she rushes to her room in search of solace and comfort.  Worried that Edward might have taken away her most treasured possessions.   She looks for her CD…gone.  Then she turns to her scrapbook and finds that just like the CD all pictures of Edward are gone.  The last straw is then broken and Bella collapses to the floor, not in a fainting spell as she might have hoped for.  Instead she collapses under the shear force of grief.  And there she remains… October… November… December… January.

Chapter Two – Stitches

Chapter Number: Two

Chapter Name: Stitches

Page Numbers: 30 – 53 (Hardcover)

Date of Chapter: September 13, 2005

Summary: After the attack, Rosalie and Emmett get Jasper outside, followed by Esme, who apologizes to Bella. Alice, Edward and Carlisle stay with Bella when Carlisle starts examining the wound in Bella’s arm. He applies a tourniquet to Bella’s arm and Edward takes her to the kitchen so Carlisle can take a better care of the wound.

Bella asks Edward to leave the room, she sees how he’s fighting the thirst but he doesn’t want to leave; Carlisle then suggests to Edward that he go and find Jasper to talk to him, and he finally leaves the room. Bella watches Carlisle while he is working on the wound, and she can see Alice leaving the room with an apologetic smile.

Carlisle and Bella then start talking about his work and how he can resist the blood temptation. He tells her that after years of practice he doesn’t notice the scent. They continue talking while Carlisle finishes getting the glass out of the wound and sewing it.  Carlisle tells her what he likes about his job, and the conversation changes when he starts talking about his father, his beliefs about God and his thoughts about the vampire afterlife. Bella is surprised by the turn the conversation has taken, but she agrees with him, and when Carlisle tells her she’s the first one to agree with him, she thinks about Edward. Carlisle explains that Edward agrees with him to a point, because he thinks they have lost their souls, and this makes Bella understand why Edward acts that way with her and changes the subject.

Carlisle tells Bella about Edward’s story before he was changed, how it was his mother who made him make the decision to change him. They were in the hospital where Carlisle was working, his father died first and one day, when he was checking Edward and his mother, she asked him to save Edward in a way that made him think she knew what he was. After that she was unconsciousness and died soon afterwards. Carlisle took both Edward and his mother to the morgue and he carried Edward to his home, where he changed him.

After the conversation Carlisle offers Bella to take her to her home, but is Edward who takes Bella home after she changes her blood soaked clothes by borrowing something from Alice. Bella asks Alice to tell Jasper that she’s not mad at him after what happened.

Bella is walking towards Edward to leave when Alice gives her the presents from her birthday and her camera. They get to her car, neither of them talking while they drove back to her home. Finally they start talking about what happened at the birthday party.  Bella asked Edward’s forgiveness because it was all her fault; however, he tells her that if she had been in the party with Mike, Jessica and Angela nothing potentially deadly would have happened.

When Bella arrives home, Charlie asks her how was the party and she tells him about the present s she got. He asks her what happened to her arm and she answers that it was because she tripped, and she goes upstairs.

After changing in the bathroom she goes to her room to find Edward in the bed. Bella starts opening the presents and she gets excited when she finds the present from Carlisle and Esme, plane tickets to Jacksonville for both Edward and Bella. Edward takes his present and unwraps it, handing Bella a CD case, with a CD inside. Edward puts the CD on her CD player and Bella listens speechless to the music.  She tells Edward it’s beautiful, the music he composed for her alone.

Edward gets Bella some pain killers for her arm while the lullaby he made for her continues playing. They lay down in the bed, and Bella asks Edward to kiss her again seeing it was her birthday and she didn’t want him to ignore her birthday. They begin kissing as usual; but Edward doesn’t stop when they begin getting out of line. When he stops he says he’s sorry for crossing the lines, but Bella tells him she doesn’t mind.

Bella finally gets to sleep, but when she’s almost asleep she realizes this kiss was similar to the want they shared when Edward kissed her goodbye before he left to get James off of her trail.
