Physiology

The skin when they are in human form is “burning hot” (NM12). Bella feels this first when she believes Jake has a fever on the way home from the trip to see the movie. “Whoa, Jake—you’re burning up!” (NM9) but it is common enough for his body to be consistently at this temperature. Werewolves are clearly the polar opposites of the vampires, with their icy-cold touch and marble-like skin. Perhaps their physiological make up reflects the tension between them.

“We run a little warmer than the normal people.  About one-oh-eight, one-oh-nine.  I never get cold anymore.  I could stand like this” —he gestured to his bare torso— “in a snowstorm and it wouldn’t bother me.  The flakes would turn to rain where I stood.” (NM15) Stephenie Meyer says this is one of the unique features of her werewolves.

They are also able to heal very quickly physically. Injuries don’t last very long at all.
“He’ll be perfect by sundown.”
“By sundown?”  I looked at the line on Paul’s arm.  Odd, but it looked weeks old.
“Wolf thing,” Jacob whispered.(NM14)  We see this again when Jake cuts his hand so badly that it should need stitches and then moments later it has healed: “It should have taken days to scab over and then weeks to fade into the shiny pink scar that marked his skin now.” (EC9)

The actual transformation between human and werewolf is described in most detail in "New Moon’. Certainly the initial transformation is not an easy one, as Jake explains his symptoms to Bella: “Everything,” he whispered.  “Every part of me hurts.” (NM9) Initially, I thought that this must be physical pain that Jake was experiencing, but Stephenie explained that this wasn’t actually the case. “The transformation into the wolf form is not a painful process, only disorienting and mentally uncomfortable.” (PC11) It is mental pain that Jake is referring to, from the fact he has realised that he is both a monster and the implications this has in his relationship with Bella.

The transformation itself can happen at any time, and isn’t dependent upon a full moon. In young werewolves cases, they can change involuntarily because of lack of self-control:
“What would happen…if you got too mad?” I whispered.
“I’d turn into a wolf,” he whispered. (NM13)
The effects of this sort of transformation is shown in the relationship between Sam and Emily and the disfiguring injuries she has suffered. (NM15, PC11)

Transformation is a sudden process and is described through a series of violent words: “burst”, “exploded”, “vibrating violently”, “ripping”, “blasted” (NM14). It is so sudden “that if I’d blinked, I’d have missed the entire transformation” (NM14) Initial transformations seem to be triggered by anger, and Jake explains that his own conversion to becoming a werewolf was staved off by his happiness with Bella: “I was like a time bomb.  You know what set me off?  I got back from that movie and Billy said I looked weird.  That was all, but I just snapped.  And then I—I exploded.  I almost ripped his face off—my own father!” (NM15). Sam Uley’s transformation also supports this, as it “took him two weeks to calm down enough to change back.” (EC5)

Jacob seems to find phasing between wolf and human form easier than most. “Even Sam couldn’t have phased on the fly like that.  He saw Paul losing it, and it took him, what, half a second to attack?  The boy’s got a gift.” (NM14) He explains later to Bella that this may be due to his ancestry: “It takes some practice to phase back and forth but it’s easier for me… because Ephraim Black was my father’s grandfather, and Quil Ateara was my mother’s grandfather.” (NM15). Because his lineage is so very strongly linked with the last pack, it seems to be easier for him than most

Werewolves are only created when there are neighbouring vampires, so that the Quileute land is always protected. Jacob explains that:
“There’s no exact age…it just builds and builds and then suddenly—” (NM15)
It seems to occur around the point where the boy becomes a mature man, and is certainly accompanied by a sudden growth spurt.

Their sense of pack-identity is strong. So much so that they are capable of hearing “…thoughts—each other’s anyway—no matter how far away from each other we are.  It really helps when we hunt, but it’s a big pain otherwise.  It’s embarrassing—having no secrets like that.” (NM13) Even in wolf form, they retain full control of their human minds. “They are still themselves–not at all the feral, mindless werewolves of other mythologies.” (PC11)  This means that all actions are knowing actions, although it is entirely possible for a werewolf to lose his temper and for him to be out of control as both a human and a wolf.  Jacob shows his human side in wolf form on the run up to the fight with Victoria, when he pulls a face with “his tongue lolled out the side in a wolfy grin” to make Bella giggle. “Jacob’s grin widened over his sharp teeth.” (EC18)

Werewolves were believed to be only male until the transformation of Leah Clearwater, which surprised everyone, even though “she’s a direct descendant, all right.” (EC19). The issue of imprinting is also critical as this is how the werewolf finds the one person they are destined to be with forever: “It’s not like love at first sight, really. It’s more like… gravity moves. When you see her, suddenly it’s not the earth holding you here anymore. She does. And nothing matters more than her.” (EC8)

Their sense of smell has adjusted to help them identify their one enemy. “Vampire,” he spit out…“I can smell it!  Dammit!” (NM16) It is not clear whether it is heightened in other circumstances, but they certainly know vampires from a distance and find the smell sickly sweet and repellent.

Like vampires, they are also very strong; Bella breaks her hand punching Jake: “It was broken, I could feel it.” (EC15)

Finally, someone has the wolf inside them for life: “What I am was born into me” (EC4), and whilst they are still mostly wolvish, they “can’t… grow up,” (EC5) and stop aging. Jacob explains that this is only until they “stop phasing for a solid length of time [then] we age again.” (EC5)

Personal Correspondence #11

As we update the Lexicon, we find out that there are still little bits and pieces we don’t understand or know about.  This section of the PCs will be used for all the little questions we have to ask along the way and will be updated frequently.

Q.  Why are the wolves so warm?

A.  The high temperature is one of their unique features.  It has nothing to do with the temperature of real wolves (who I assume run on a normal mammalian temp).

Q.   Jacob mentions the pain of the transformation.  How painful is it?

 A.  Jacob is not talking about physical pain.  The transformation into the wolf form is not a painful process, only disorienting and mentally uncomfortable.  (The only comparison I could think of was my lasik surgery, ha ha.  It didn’t hurt at all, but it still freaked me out.  I passed out twice under the laser.)  The pain he’s talking about here stems from his rather rude awakening to his surprising heritage–guess what?  You’re a monster!–coupled with the fact that he can’t see Bella for fear of hurting her and the knowledge that Bella is knowingly in love with an evil vampire.

Q.  How aware are the wolves of their human side when transformed?  Do they think rationally and logically the same way we do?

A.  The wolves entirely retain their human minds while in their wolf forms.  They are still themselves—not at all the feral, mindless werewolves of other mythologies.  The danger of being around werewolves (in my mythology) does not stem from the idea that they would attack someone because they can’t control themselves in their wolf forms.  It comes from the fact that they can’t control that transformation.  In the beginning, they pretty much explode into their wolf forms whenever they lose their tempers.  It’s a very…I’m not sure of the right word…expansive (?) change.  They blow out into a body many times larger in mass than their other form, with claws and teeth blowing out in the same expansion.  Standing close to someone during this process, you could either get raked like Emily, or possibly crushed.  For example, when Bella was with Jacob in the Rabbit in his garage–if their conversation had caused him to lose his temper and phase, she would have been smashed into the metal frame of the car, and probably have died.

Q: Can you tell me anything more about Ben Cheney as well as someone named Conner, Samantha, and Lee Stephens.  Lee is the kid Mike carries into the Nurses office, right?  Anything else you have time to give me about these other random people would be nice!

A: Ben Cheney is of Asian descent, with black hair and dark brown eyes.  He is 5’7" and wears glasses.  He loves graphic novels, action movies with good special effects, and Angela. Even though Angela lives close enough to walk to school, Ben picks her up after they start dating seriously. He drives a dodge neon.

I don’t really have specific ideas of the others.  They aren’t important people in my little world.  Imagine them how you will.

Cheney, Ben

Eye color: Dark Brown

Height: 5’7″

Physical description: “Little” (TWEp) only 5′ 7″ and of Aisian descent (PC11) wore glasses (EC2)

Hobbies: Reading graphic novels, watching action movies with good special effects, and spending time with Angela Weber.

Personal history: Ben was one of the students that Bella had a hard time remembering his name.  He was there when the group went to LaPush for the day and helped gather fire wood.  (TW6)  We don’t hear much about him through out Twilight, but by the end he and Angela Webber are happily dancing together at the prom in spite of the fact that she is much taller than him. (TWEp)  Their relationship lasts over the summer and they regularly sit with Bella, Edward, and Alice at lunch their senior year. (NM1)  Even though Angela lives close enough to walk to school, Ben picks her up every day. (PC11)

Ben and Angela saw an oversized wolf when they were en route to a weekend picnic – Ben caught a stomach flu virus shortly thereafter (NM6). Angela came down with the flu later on and Ben called to cancel the group movie excursion, which left Bella to attend with Mike and Jacob. (NM9) When Edward returned from his self-imposed exile, Ben continued to be Bella’s friend along with Angela (EC1). Ben proved his loyalty to the pair when he had to be restrained by Mike from siding with Edward during the Edward-Jacob argument in front of Forks High School and Ben placed a $10 bet that in a fight Edward would defeat Jacob (EC3). Ben was a close friend of Austin Marks; they lived across the street from each other (NM5) and the two teen boys did lots of “guy stuff” together (EC6). Ben and Angela were both accepted to the University of Washington and planned to move to Seattle a few months after graduation (EC6). He attended the Cullens’ graduation party with Angela (EC17).

Happy Birthday Lexicon!!!

The Lexicon is officially ONE YEAR OLD!!  Whoa… lots of things have happened in the last year, and we thoroughly appreciate all the support we’ve had from our members.  In honor of this occasion, we’ve opened a new forum dedicated to celebrating the last year and all the memories and friends that have been made along the way.  Check it out here!

Eclipse update at Stephenie’s site

Stephenie has updated the Eclipse page at her website to include a MUCH better quality picture of the book cover as well as a small snippet from the book.  The same "summary" that was posted at Barnes and Noble is on the page as well the confirmation that the book will be in stores by Aug. 7.

Eclipse cover!!

So we thought we would have to wait until May to see the cover, but Barnes and Noble has gone and put it up at their site along with some info on the content of the book.  Be warned that the image is REALLY crappy, so use your imagination for what it should look like all glossy and clean and pretty.  I set up a thread on the message boards for you to discuss your thoughts and feelings about the cover.

You may also notice that the release date at Barnes and Noble is Aug.7.  This is the same date Stephenie has tossed out as a possible date.  I hate to say that it is 100% set in stone since I don’t have this confirmed yet, but it looks legit.

Stephenie heads back to Europe

Some of you may have had a heads up on this one, but I wanted to get the word out officially.  I don’t have all the specifics yet, but I do know that Stephenie will be in Italy the weekend of May 18th.  There are plans in the works for her to be in Rome and In Volterra, but nothing set in stone yet.  As soon as we know anything more definite, we will post it here.

She’s also heading back to Spain for the Madid Book Festival in the Retiro on May 25th.  That means she will be in and around Europe for about a week.  Keep checking back here for more news as it comes our way.

Along those same lines, I know you are all sick of hearing it, but there is no more news on the Prom.  Trust me when I say that I am well aware of how tense everyone is feeling right now about not know what’s going on.  Stephenie feels it too and hopes to have something for us very soon.

ALso, I just wanted everyone to know that I have seen the cover for Eclipse and it’s rather nice.  I can’t wait to hear the speculation over what you all think it means!  LOL!

And lastly, I was chatting with Pel last night and she asked me when the Lexicon’s anniversary was.  In looking through my e-mail, I found out that it was exactly one year ago TODAY that I first spoke to Stephenie on the phone, nervous wreck that I was!  I can’t believe that it’s only been a year.  It feels like I’ve known her and all of you for a lot longer!  You guys all rock and I’m so greatful for the support you’ve shown the lex over the last year.  More to come on the official anniversary of the lex!

Stephenie in Spain

I’m back in the UK now, but had a great time in Spain – meeting Stephenie and the gang from Crepusculo-es during the earlier part of this week. Thanks to Edward Cullen, La Tua Cantante and everyone else who was so kind to me when I was visiting. Thanks especially to Maria for letting me squeeze in to events on the spur of the moment. Everyone has been so very kind!

Wednesday is the last day I’ve got to report on. That day, Stephenie did a talk and answered questions at the FNAC in Madrid to loads of fans. The queue was actually so big that all the chairs needed to be taken out of the place in order to get everyone in there.
Answering questions 2

The talk was fun, and all the translations were done through the use of headsets. I was stunned at the speed of the translation – there was only a short pause between each bit. It was funny as an English speaker though, because a few of us would laugh at the jokes, then a few seconds later everyone else would laugh as well. Very disconcerting for Stephenie!

Some fun t-shirts were there; all of my photos can be found here. They had roses and apples to give out to the fans, and the whole platform was strewn with rose petals. It looked gorgeous.

My blog for the trip is here. If you’re after general photos of Madrid, you’ll find them here!. It’s a beautiful place and I can’t recommend it enough if you’re after somewhere to visit.

Needless to say, it was brilliant to meet and chat to Stephenie. Those of you who’ve met her already know how lovely she is – and those of you who haven’t need to get to a book signing soon!

Imogen 🙂

Books five and six?

I’m posting this morning to nip a massive rumor in the bud.  I got two messages yesterday from fans I consider to be "in the know" about how Stephenie has already signed to publish books five and six.  Folks – this is NOT TRUE.  I e-mailed her right away to check this out and she told me it could be traced to a problem with the language translations.  She has a contract for book four – right now the title is Breaking Dawn – but that’s it.  As she has said in several Q&A sessions, she will wait until book four has been written before she decides to try for book five and six.  She wants to see how she feels and if the story is still "fresh" before she agrees to more books.  So please, pass this on to your friends that as of this moment Stephenie only has a contract for FOUR books.
