Possible Reprieve For Forks HS Facade

The Peninsula Daily News updated their story about the pending demise of the Forks High School Facade that dates back to the 1920’s.

Their revised account states:

“School officials still hope that something can be done to save the facade at Forks High School as a freestanding monument on the redeveloped campus.

According to the conditional use permit granted to the Quillayute Valley School District by the city last summer, the district must hold a public hearing and give the community 45 days in which to find alternate funding to pay for reinforcing the brick facade.

Reinforcement and renovation would be required for the facade to remain as a stand-alone structure as a memory of the 1925 portion of the school, which figures descriptively in the Twilight saga of novels.

A date has not been set for the public hearing.

The board voted Friday night that the facade would be too expensive to pay for out of the bond issue passed by voters last February.”

The Forks Forum has also been covering the story. Their council is pictured above discussing the matter at a public meeting. (Photo credit: Chris Cook)  Their coverage states that:

“Of particular interest is how much the winning contractor will charge to restore and stabilize the facade of the section of the circa 1925 Forks High School that was spared when D&H Enterprises demolished most of the building over the summer. Estimated costs ran from a low of about $19,000 to a high of several hundred thousand dollars.

Some of the base bids announced ranged from $12.6 million to $14 million-plus. The final dollar figures of each bid opened will take several days to calculate. Construction work is scheduled to begin later this fall.
A $1.5 million woody bio-mass school heating plant is near completion, and a ribbon cutting is scheduled for mid-October. The plant is designed to use wood chips to heat the near addition.”

Jasper Forks: Twilight Inspired Video

We had a TwiGuy named  Alex write in about this. Alex wrote:

“I would classify myself as a husband of a twi-hard fan J  My wife visits your website probably on hourly basis, and often sends me links to check out different news related to everything Twilight.  And of course, I have read all the books and watched the movies.

Here is something I came across released on one of the biggest German dance labels in EU.  There is a vocal version to the song which I heard before, but made nothing of it because they took “River Flows Through It” melody and transformed it into a song and used “Jasper” and “Forks” keywords in their project name.  Just recently I came across a new instrumental remix and a FULL 8:45 min video which is 100% inspired by Twilight and has a lot of the famous scenes from the movie.  Whoever made this awesome video had to fly from EU to Forks to shoot it.

Check it out in the link below.  I’m sure all Twilight fans will enjoy it!!!”

Some parts are a little repetitive, but you definitely want to see this one all the way through. We don’t know how we’ve never seen this before!

Forks High School Facade Too Expensive to Save

The original building of the Forks High School campus that dated back to the 1920’s was taken down earlier this year. When we were in Forks last year, one of the school staff members told us about how difficult is was to maintain the aging building. Just to heat it barely effectively they had to crank up an aging and inefficient system at 3:00am. Even then, the students were still wearing coats in the building.

Originally, it was hoped that the historic facade could be preserved, but this now seems impractical. According to the Penninsula Daily News:

“The School Board was hoping to incorporate the front of the building — left standing when the rest of the condemned structure was demolished last summer — into the design of the new campus.

The facade would have been left as a stand-alone structure as a part of a grand entrance to the school.

The brick design of the leaky old building figures heavily in the descriptions of the Twilight saga, which has propelled Forks and the West End to worldwide acclaim.

But saving the facade would cost $271,000 on top of the $12.2 million construction bid accepted Friday, and its just not feasible to spend the money that way, said Bill Rohde, School Board president.”

Plus people can vote for their favorite video so by sending this out to Twi-fans you can help out the band 🙂

Melissa Rosenberg on New Yorker Vampire Panel

melissa-rosenbergheadshotAs part of the annual New Yorker Festival run by the magazine of the same name, Melissa Rosenberg sat on a panel with other authors who have penned or adapted vampire fiction. Fellow panelists included Stephen King who created controversy last year for comments made on the Twilight Series.

“These vampires are lost souls, Carroll said, the type that women long to make their “projects.” The sex, King pointed out, is invariably adolescent—“they just want to bite the girl’s neck”—and Rosenberg elaborated: the self-loathing Edward from “Twilight” is “actually very safe, because of his own morality.” King asked if there was a parallel between maintaining abstinence and not wanting to suck her blood? Rosenberg didn’t miss a beat: “Absolutely.”

Kimbra Hickey Wants Small Breaking Dawn Role

Kimbra Hickey, the hand model whose hands are on the iconic cover of Twilight, is hoping for a walk-on role on Breaking Dawn.

According to the New York Post:

“Hickey’s agent, Danielle Korwin, said her hands are in demand because they are “veinless” — not the sort of hands a vampire would like.

The 2004 photo shoot for the “Twilight” book cover paid $300 — the industry standard for two hours of work. Hickey had to file her nails extra short so her tiny hands didn’t look like an adult’s.

Lately, she’s been going to “Twilight” fan conventions — she’s at one this weekend in Portland, Ore. — where she sells apple-scented hand lotion.

So far, she knows of four “Twihards” — as the vampire-romance fans are called — who’ve gotten tattoos of her hands.

Her goal is to break into acting. She’s trying to contact the casting director for the fourth installment in the “Twilight” series.

“If I could get a little background part, it would be fantastic,” she said — “even if they only wanted my hands in it.”

Best of luck to Kimbra with her goal.

Alloy Magazine: Twilight Actors and Characters as Roommates

Alice CullenAlloy magazine has done two recent features on celebrities and movie characters people would love to have as roommates.  Alice Cullen made the list as one of the characters and Kristen Stewart made the list as one of the celebrities.

“In The Twilight Saga, Alice goes out of her way to make sure Bella is as happy as can be at all times. She showers her with gifts and loves to use Bella as her personal Barbie doll. We’d love to tap into the endless Cullen cashflow for a little free swag, wouldn’t you?”
