Rumor Control: Stephenie Meyer Being Sued

OK, we are going to go out on a limb on this one even though it’s Sunday and getting an official comment is practically impossible.

On April 10th the oh so scholarly and reliable Max-Dan-Wiz site runs a story supposedly obtained from the AP claiming Stephenie Meyer stole the idea for Twilight from her former college roommate, said roommate is suing her, A BYU professor is backing the roommate, and production has halted on New Moon.

OK let’s take this out step by step:

  • Article appeared on April 10: filming has gone on since that date most notably Friday when Vancity Allie got pictures of the cast in Bella’s Birthday party attire.
  • The article claims an AP wire as their source. We can find no such record of this on the AP.
  • The article claims Dr. Peter Benton now head of the BYU English Department is backing the claim. There is no Dr. Peter Benton at BYU (but he was a character on ER or a few seasons).
  • Stephenie’s supposed former roommate must be living under the biggest rock ever if in Salt Lake City of all places she is only just now hearing that her former roommate’s success is based on a vampire novel.
  • Vampire short story in the BYU curriculum…yeah…I’m sure the BYU undergrads wrote lots of vampire tales 15 years ago right along with all those stories involving lots of swearing, drinking, and pre-marital sex.

So who fell for this nonsense?

The Insider who thought for whatever reason it was a good idea to let fans upload stories and have it appear as if it were an official The Insider story. The site is reporting the story as fact, and is also running the story with the fan made poster WITH A TURKEY in the corner as if it were real. On a quick glance other news outlets who don’t read the fine print to realize this is a fan uploaded story are linking to this story.

Others who fell for this include:

ONTD
Backseat Cuddler
Fanpop
…the list goes on. Run the words “Dr. Peter Benton and BYU” and “Heidi Stanton and BYU” though a Google search and you get tons more links.

EDITED: Official comment from Summit Entertainment regarding the portion of the story as it specifically refers to filming is as follows: “This rumor is certainly NOT true. Please let your readers know.”

EDITED: Official comment from Stephenie Meyer’s publisher regarding the portion of the story that refers to the lawsuit:

“This story is false.”

*Note the story on the Max-Dan-Wiz site has now been removed.

Twilighters Meeting in Italy

The Italian counterpart of The Twilight Lexicon is hosting a get-together for Twilighters from around the world who are Italy bound this May. This is the same group that organized a bus tour to see Stephenie in Volterra two years ago. The group was also able to interview Stephenie at that time.

According to their site:

With approval from the Municipality of Montepulciano and a partnership with the tourism association and the city press office, we’ll be glad to invite all of you  on

Saturday May 30th in Montepulciano

for an unforgettable day among fellow twilighters!

The group has info on hotels and transportation. Check them out!

Twilight Music Girls

For this week’s music feature we bring you the Twilight Music Girls.   Originally friends from drama school, the girls shared a passion for music, often playing shows together at various clubs in town. The girls were all playing at the same venue one night and discovered they had each been musically inspired by the golden-eyed vampire and his sweetheart. All of their sets included a ‘Twi-song’ about the star-crossed pair. The ladies realized their passion for Meyer’s characters was great inspiration, and they wanted to share their music with Twilighters everywhere. A few weeks and lots of Twilight-gushing later, the Twilight Music Girls was born.

How did you become the Twilight Music Girls?

Being a songwriter, inspiration can come from any number of things and it just happened that these books were a strong influencing factor for all of us, so we decided to come together and play those songs for the fans that would understand them to their fullest!

You can read the rest of our interview with TMG HERE. Be sure to check out their myspace page for the most up to date information including their autographed Ashley Greene DVD give away!

Christian Serratos Says Thank You Chris Weitz, Stephenie Meyer

Christian Serratos updated her MySpace to talk about her New Moon experience:

I am finished filming New Moon. It was great to see everyone one again!

Chris Weitz was great! I can’t believe that I have been so fortunate to have worked with such talented people in such a short time. Stephenie, Catherine, Chris and more. I am so grateful! This time around I felt more comfortable letting the team know that when I was dressed as Angela,  I and Angela would prefer to be dressed animal cruelty free and they obliged. They were awesome! I’m so thankful that they went out of there way to find items that did not have animal products in them. It was touching…”

Vancity Allie Meets the Entire New Moon Cast

The Vancity Allie blogger waited for hours in the dead of night outside of the area where the birthday scene was being filmed. After a long cold night of only seeing crew trucks and distant lights there persistence paid off. The cast asked their driver to stop their car and they went over to Allie’s group.

“And believe it or not… Peter Facinelli (Carlisle), Kristen Stewart (Bella), and Nikki Reed (Rosalie) in full hair and make up got out of the van! Peter said, “We just have to get out and give you girls hugs for waiting all this time!” Hugs all around. Kristen asked Amy how long we’d been there, and Amy said “10 minutes” at first and then eventually told her the truth. Nikki was just beaming… she looked great and her new wig looked amazing.”

We just want to say hat’s off to Vancity Allie for some great reporting while being respectful of the cast and crew.

Vampires Are Done Filming?

It seems like Kellan Lutz made an off-handed comment that might indicate that the vampires will be done filming in Vancouver shortly. Given that the majority of the Cullens are only present in the very beginning and the very end of the novel, the story seems probable. Given the re-arrival of Edi Gathegi and Rachelle Lefevere and since Cristian Serratos on her blog confirmed that the humans are also done filming, it looks like filming is clipping along at a productive and efficient pace. Also, since New Moon has a lot more interiors than Twilight, and the vampires are less in it, its far less weather dependent.

This also means that they are free for other projects such as PR appearances at film festivals, or shooting schedules of other features.

See Robessed for the details pulled together from several sources.
