Add M. Night Shyamalan to the Breaking Dawn Director Pile

MKnightAt first the list included Gus Van Sant, Sofia Coppola, and Bill Condon discovered by Hollywood insider Nikkie Finke who writes for Deadline Hollywood. Then the name Stephen Daldry surfaced discovered by the LA Times. Right after that MTV (there seems to be a pattern here, you’ll see in a minute) asked The Runaways director, Floria Sigismondi, if she were interested and she gave a polite and non-committal answer.

Now enter M. Night Shyamalan, director of the upcoming The Last Airbender that stars Jackson Rathbone. MTV put the question to him, and to our surprise M. Knight (can we call him just Knight?) was a apparently fan of the first movie…who knew?

“”I would’ve loved to be– I love the series, and Catherine [Hardwicke’s] movie, it was one of my favorite movies of that year,” he said. “Really, I thought tonally, it was a perfect movie. I called her up after I saw ‘Twilight’ and was like ‘That was amazing.’ So I’m a big fan.”

So Now That We Had 8 Hours to Think About It…

Mtvlogoexaminerlogolexedeyeslogo

So at 7:00am for Pel and 6:00am for Alphie we were given the news about the news about the release of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. Around 4:00ish MTV contacted us and wanted to know what we thought, what fan reaction on the Lexicon was, and our overall opinion of fan reaction was.  So Alphie, Lori, called MTV:

“Joffs felt fans weren’t reading Meyer’s post about the novella closely enough, or they would have seen that Meyer had been working on this story since she first finished writing “Eclipse” many years ago. “The Short Second Life” was written to be included in the “Twilight Saga” companion but had grown too large, and the publisher decided to put it out in conjunction with the film….”I think that that’s where fans are getting upset, because it looks like Stephenie has abandoned writing anything else to write about Bree, and I don’t think that’s what happened at all,” Joffs explained…

Joffs said she empathized with fans dying for a full version of “Midnight Sun,” but she saw the publication of “The Short Second Life”‘ only as a positive. “If this is what it takes — if publishing another novel, another little novella, another side of the story — to get her writing again and to get her back into publication again, I will take it. I’m grateful for anything she puts out there,” Joffs said about Meyer. “I will read whatever she publishes, happily.”

Our friend Amanda Bell, the Twilight Examiner, also was asked for her opinion:

“This is work by this author about this series that we’re all in love with,” Bell explained. “People are going to gravitate towards being totally hyped up about it. It’s going to be a big deal, for sure.”

For Bell, Bree Tanner was a character she had always been interested in. While some fans were confused as to why a character that only appeared for 10 pages in “Eclipse” would be the subject of her own 192-page novella, it made sense to Bell from the beginning.

“While reading the ‘Twilight’ series, you think that the Cullen family has really good perception of people, and so it was interesting to see that they were kind of willing to take [Tanner] under their wing,” Bell said. “There was a reason for that, and I was always curious to know more about her.”

Twilight Saga Premiere Theaters Saved!

braunmannAccording to The Hollywood Reporter the classic art deco theaters that are across the street from each other have been saved from closure. The theaters are home to multiple premieres and can each seat well over 1,000 patrons. Twilight Saga movie fans know them because the redcarpet for both Twilight and New Moon took up almost the entire city block that runs between the theaters.

“The landmark mono-screens in L.A.’s Westwood section — founded in 1931 and 1937, respectively — have been operated for the past few decades by Mann Theatres, which had tagged them for closure. But regional theater operator Regency Theatres said Tuesday that it has agreed to take over the properties on unspecified terms starting Thursday.

Mann’s lease on the theaters expires Wednesday, though the circuit intended to continue to operate the venues on a month-to-month basis.

“We are excited to be adding the iconic Village and Bruin theaters to the Regency family of theaters,” Regency president Lyndon Golin said. “These celebrated movie houses have been landmarks in Los Angeles since the 1930s, and we plan to extend their legacy far into the future.”‘

See more at the Hollywood Reporter.

There is no word on whether the Eclipse premiere is taking place at these theaters, or the date of the premiere. Given that up until today they were slated for closure, it would not surprise us if another venue has been sought for the Eclipse premiere.

Stephenie Meyer Talks About Bree Tanner on Her Website

jodelleBreeBurnAside from today’s press release ( see the entry below) announcing that there would be a novella covering the story of Bree (now Bree Tanner, she has a last name…who knew!) the newborn from Eclipse, Stephenie has provided a TON of extra details not covered in the press release on her website. Highlights below, but get over to StephenieMeyer.com to read the whole thing.

  • The novella started as a writing exercise back when Eclipse was being edited
  • Originally it was intended for the Official Guide, but it ended up as 200 pages and that just wasn’t going to work size-wise
  • There will be further word on the Official Guide by the end of the year
  • Melissa Rosenberg, David Slade, and Jodelle Ferland got to peek at Bree’s story so aspects of it could be included in the Eclipse movie.
  • Jodelle had to burn her copy after reading it for security (see picture).
  • The novel will be available in both a free form online at the website BreeTanner.com and as a hard cover book with$1.00 of the proceeds from each book going to the American Red Cross to assist aiding the earthquake victims of Chile and Haiti.

And speaking as fan who operate this fansite, Alphie and Pel think they can safely speak for the fandom when we say

WOO HOO!

THANK YOU STEPHENIE!

INTERNATIONAL PHENOMENON STEPHENIE MEYER
ON SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 2010
THE SHORT SECOND LIFE OF BREE TANNER:

AN ECLIPSE NOVELLA

NOVELLA ORIGINALLY CONCEIVED AS SHORT STORY
FOR THE TWILIGHT SAGA: THE OFFICIAL GUIDE
ONE DOLLAR FROM EACH BOOK SOLD IN THE US
WILL BE DONATED TO THE AMERICAN RED CROSS
FOR INTERNATIONAL RELIEF EFFORTS

NEW YORK, NY (March 30, 2010) – Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, a division of Hachette Book Group, has announced today that it will release the first new title from Stephenie Meyer in nearly two years. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner is a novella told from the point of view of Bree, a character originally featured in Eclipse. The novella (at 192 pages) will be released at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2010 in hardcover for $13.99 with a first printing of 1.5 million copies. One dollar for each book sold in the US from the first printing will be donated to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which supports disaster relief efforts such as those in Haiti and Chile.*

“I’m as surprised as anyone about this novella,” said Stephenie Meyer. “When I began working on it in 2005, it was simply an exercise to help me examine the other side of Eclipse, which I was editing at the time. I thought it might end up as a short story that I could include on my website. Then, when work started on The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, I thought the Guide would be a good fit for my Bree story. However, the story grew longer than I anticipated, until it was too long to fit into the Guide.”

As a special thank you to fans, Meyer is giving them exclusive access to the novel on a dedicated website, www.breetanner.com, from June 7 to July 5, 2010 where fans from around the world will be able to read the book online in English. “I’d always considered The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner as something for the fans,” said Meyer. “They have been so supportive of all things Twilight.”

Visitors to the dedicated site will also find a link to the American Red Cross website (www.redcross.org), where they can make a donation and learn more about their relief efforts worldwide. “I have been moved by the generous outpouring of support for the recent crises in Haiti and Chile,” said Meyer. “I am glad that sales of this book will support the American Red Cross with their amazing efforts abroad.”

“Fans have been waiting with bated breath for a new book from Stephenie,” said Megan Tingley, Senior Vice President and Publisher of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. “We are doubly thrilled to be giving them the opportunity to read this exciting new work as well as contribute to an important cause at the same time.”

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner is the riveting story of Bree Tanner, a newborn vampire first introduced in Eclipse, and the darker side of the world she inhabits. The novella chronicles the newborn vampire army’s journey as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens, following their encounter to its unforgettable conclusion.
The character Bree not only features prominently in the book Eclipse, but in the upcoming movie from Summit Entertainment. “Stephenie was gracious enough to let me read a draft of the novella while we were prepping the movie The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” said Director David Slade. “I thoroughly enjoyed the story and it gave us great insight and inspired location choices and the tailoring of scenes. I think fans are going to love the fascinating details involved in the loves, fears and actions of an emerging vampire.”

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner will also be available as an ebook beginning at 6:00 a.m. EST on June 5, 2010. Additionally, more information about the previously announced The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, including publication date, will be released by the end of the year.

In less than five years, Stephenie Meyer has become a worldwide publishing phenomenon. The Twilight Saga’s translation rights have been sold in nearly 50 countries and 100 million copies have been sold worldwide.
*Donations to the American Red Cross from the US sales of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner will continue until all first printing copies have been sold or at the end of a two-year period from the initial publication date, whichever is the first to occur.

The American Red Cross name is used with its permission, which in no way constitutes an endorsement, express or implied, of any product, service, company, opinion or political position.

Here’s how the nominations panned out. We think we did pretty well on our predictions! BUT we think we can do better by using the write in feature that comes at the bottom of each category!

Best Movie: New Moon

Best Female Performance: Kristen Stewart (competing against herself in New Moon and The Runaways, and Dakota is nominated for The Runaways.)

Best Male Performance: Taylor Lautner (with competition from Rob in Remember Me,  well…this is going to be interesting.)

Breakthrough Female Performance: Woo Hoo! Go Anna Kendrick for Up In the Air!

Breakthrough Male Performance: Taylor Lautner is not there? Is it because they put him in last year against Robert Pattinson? Time to use that write in feature!
