Casting and Audition FAQ

The following was written for the Twilight Lexicon by Wolf_Boy to hopefully explain the casting process more clearly.

Actors who want to succeed in show business spend their whole lives perfecting their craft, If you want to be a professional actor there are many paths that can be taken, but they all begin with training. Training gives you the tools and confidence to aggressively pursue a career, Now there are many places to obtain this training from universities to  your community theatre you should do it all if possible. Never stop training.

OK so now your ready to audition for the film and television industry. if you plan on auditioning for SAG/AFTRA  film and television projects you will most likely need an agent or have a relationship with the casting director of the Film or T.V show.  Agents Have access to what are called "Breakdowns" .  The breakdowns are sent to agents everyday. They are list of all the projects filming and what parts are needed for that film, commercial, or television series. The breakdown will give the character name and a brief description, now and agent will then go through the breakdowns and pick actors from  their files that best match the breakdown.

For example a  film called " Vampire Kiss"  a breakdown would say:

Lead: Edmond

  • tall 6’ft2
  • Caucasian
  • brown hair,
  • athletic body but not too muscular,
  • kind and sensitive, always does the the right thing

It will also give a lot of information about the project itself, such as who is the casting director, location of filming and who is the producer etc etc. Agent will then  look up all their tall caucasian actors and submit them either electronically or through a messenger service to the appropriate casting agency.

Now your head shot made it over to the casting directors office. Casting directors will first go through all the electronic submissions and mail from the agents they chose, and look through all the submissions and pick the actors they want to see from those submissions. Casting directors will then set up appointments with agents for each actor to come in and read for a part. The casting director will also electronically send "sides"( a brief part of the script") to the agency so they can give the sides to the actors that were selected from that agency.
As a chosen actor you will then prepare the sides. You work on the side before you are seen, usually a couple of  days before the actual audition. This is where all your training comes in.  I recommend you take classes for auditioning for film and television.  There are techniques on giving a great audition when being put on tape. For example making sure to stay in frame and not over doing it, the camera picks up everything, thats why training is so important. There are so many technical things involved with acting on film set besides just acting.
So it’s the day of the audition and you have prepared. You should show up early and sign in with the front desk and wait. When your name is called you introduce yourself to the casting people. When you go in the room normally there is a camera set up so they can put your audition on tape for producers to see. Now depending on the casting director they will give you some notes and you will read your sides with a person called the "reader" who will not be on the tape, but reads the other lines. The casting director will say begin when she is ready, and you start the scene.

Now most actors have the "sides" in their hand to look at if they need to, again this is where training comes in, there is an art to reading from  sides, so that you stay in the moment sound real and don’t spend the whole audition looking down at a piece of paper. Give your very best performance, and when it’s done, the casting director will make some adjustments and you do it again, sometimes five  times sometimes one time is all you get.

If they like what they see, they will then  give you a callback which is another audition usually with another actor who is also being considered. This is where  they look for things like chemistry and how well the actors work together and about a hundred other things. Sometimes you can have 3-5 callbacks as they mix and match actors and try new things .This is usually done for film, television goes much faster.

I hope you find this basic description of a typical audition for film for a beginning actor.  I just brushed the tip of the iceberg.

Stephenie on Readergirlz Myspace community chat

Well I logged in and soon realized that the best I could do was just try to keep up with the speed: 1 hour, 131 pages, over 1800 posts.  You can find Stephenie’s posts (look for the distinctive icon with her and Matthew Bellamy of Muse.) on pages:

4, 14, 20, 22, 35, 40, 44, 74, 78, 87, 90, 93, 94, 95, 100, 101, 105, 109, 112, 114, 120, 121, 131

If I missed a post let me know and I’ll add it in.  Hats off to readergirlz for hosting.  If you would like the condensed version of only Stephenie’s posts, you can find it here.

Pel.

Edited to include brilliant suggestion from Mallie:

Advice for anyone who doesnt want to troll through all 131 pages (coz lets admit it, no one wants to read anything without Stephenie :P )

Where it says page= in your URL, change it for the page you want, minus one

e.g. page 114 is page=113, and page 100 is page=99

🙂 hope this helps. Yay for Stephenie :D
xx Mallie

Edited yet AGAIN to ask for help from everyone at the Lex.  We did learn a few things from this chat, but for me, I’m never certain what is obvious and what isn’t.  I’m a bit too deep into it and I find myself ALWAYS saying, "Didn’t we already know that?"  So what I need from everyone who reads over Stephenie’s posts is to tell me what YOU learned and what was new to YOU.  Hop over to the message boards and let me know which parts were new to YOU and you think should be added to the PC section of the Lexicon.  Of course I will give credit to the readergirlz, but this way the information will be easier to find for future fans.

Oh, and did you see the one girl who painted her room in the book covers and the top pic from the Lex?  That room was AMAZING.  I was impressed!

Banner and Signature Warning

Due to my own crazy busy schedule, I haven’t been able to keep as tight a watch on people who go over the banner and signature size in the last month. Some new members haven’t seen the rules and some old members seem to have been taking advantage of my negligence. Because this is partially my fault, I am giving everyone twenty-four (24) hours (aka one day) notice to fix it. If you need to review our regulations, you can check out this thread in the Accident Prone forum: Avatar and Signature Rules

Anyone who is still in violation of these rules after tomorrow at 5:30 PM EST will have their signatures replaced by me. And it isn’t going to be with a pretty one.

Please remember that this is a free site. Alphie and Pel keep this server going with their own money and neither me, nor any of our moderators are paid to help run it. You have no idea how much you can help by simply following the posting and forum guidelines we have in place.

Thanks, guys.
Seraphyn

Edited to add: Please note that I said anyone and not everyone. With over 11,000 members, it is quite impossible for me to track down every single person whose banner and/or signature is too big. So, if you get whacked by the fugly banners tomorrow and you see someone who got off clean, please don’t yell at me.

Edited by pel

Folks I’ll make it simple:

Big banners=big bandwith=crashing lexicon (and if Seraphyn had just replaced the banner with no heads up we’d have even more whining.)

100+ emails/pms/actual resumes in our PO BOX from 16-year-old and their psychotic stage mothers=we can’t find PM’s and emails from people who have legit suggestions, problems, requests.

2 front page posts that aren’t all fluffy amongst a month of other items don’t make it a negative site, but if that’s how you feel no one is forcing you to stay here. As Seraphyn, said 11,000 members on a volunteer site. You don’t like it, our front page is a downer on your day, no problem go someplace else.

The movie…one more time…with feeling

There is no more casting info available. The last we heard, it’s being handled the way over 90% of films are. This means they are looking for professional actors, with experience, who have agents who represent them. This does not mean they are going to cast someone really famous who everyone knows, and it doesn’t mean they are going to cast an unknown.

What is means is that they are going to cast someone with training (either via camera technique classes, acting classes, who has been in film/TV or all of the above) who knows it’s not all bright lights and glory. They can hit a mark, find their light, hold up under multiple takes, hold character and performance level in a story arc shot out of sequence, know how to deal with close ups vs. long shots, etc. etc. It further wouldn’t surprise us if they cast people who were already 18 so that they don’t have to worry about child labor laws and schooling on set. The producers have the time to film a movie not teach Acting For Film 101. In general no one casts someone with utterly no experience of any kind to play the leading teenage role  where they will be in practically every scene in a multi-million dollar movie that is the adaptation of a bestselling novel.  There’s way too much at risk.

You may think this unfair, shortsighted,…heck you can think whatever you you want, regardless, that’s the way it is. Stomp your feet, throw a pillow, scream out the window release the frustration, whatever you need to do. In case you’ve never experienced this phenomena before, welcome to the real world, life is not fair.

If they want to cast a smaller role in a different way than usual For example, perhaps they might want someone who is actually a physically challenged Native American to play Billy Black (I’m not saying they do this is ONLY AN EXAMPLE.) The producers will reach out to organizations that are best suited to contact members of whatever group they are seeking.

Mailing, emailing, calling, complaining to, sending you resume to the Lexicon, Stephenie Meyer, Summit Films(unless you are a pro going through standard process, in which case you are probably laughing and shaking your head at all of this.) does nothing to help you get a role.  Most of the above is guaranteed to do one thing and one thing alone: DRIVE US CRAZY to the point that if casting were in our hands you would be the last person on the planet we’d ever recommend. Bombarding any of us with these things only serves to slow us down with what we regularly do. So, if you would like a website run efficiently (And I assume a new book written and a movie made, since we do not speak for Summit or Stephenie on this I can only guess what they have to deal with given what our mailbag looks like.) sometime before you are older than Edward, STOP PESTERING PEOPLE.

I am leaving the comments off, because really there is nothing more to say.   Any comments on the movie made in a front page post that does not specifically involve the movie will be deleted.

Revamping of the message boards

Announcing: Sparkling in the Sun Forum Rehab!

Occasionally forums on the Lexicon need rehabilitation. They become addicted to IMing, and off topic posting. When this happens we hold a massive intervention and send the Forum to Lexicon Rehab. The Sparkling in the Sun Character Discussion forum has just returned from Rehab, it saw Lindsey Lohan while it was there and tried to convince her to read Twilight. Sadly she refused. We do have high hopes however that like Lindsay, it will now be on a better track. Now it’s back and ready to do its job as nature *coughPelcough* intended. Which is….

A SERIOUS character discussion Forum.

From now on the Sparkling Forum promises that you will have a place to have meaningful discussions on the characters in Twilight. A place to have deep, heartfelt, communication on the characters behavior and attitudes. This forum is not to be confused with a debate forum. We have threads for that already over in Quench Your Thirst. This is a place to discuss, peacefully, the characters of Twilight, and express your thoughts in incredibly longwinded posts, complete with quoting and obscure references. In other words discuss away, but save the intense, nitty gritty, devil’s advocate debate for the debate threads. They are fairly easy to spot in that they have a vs. in the title or they have a specific topic posted that members debate upon for several pages or so before moving on to a new topic. We are not saying the character forums have to be totally fluffy, just fluffier than debate.

The following types of posts will be deleted or edited by Mods without warning:

  1. IMing (Things like, "i’m bored", "why isn’t anyone posting", "Be back after dinner")
  2. Off topic posting (Things like, "You know Jacob reminds me of a day at the beach. Anyone ever been to Daytona?)
  3. “OMG He’s So Hot” (Suffice to say that the vast number of visitors here find Jacob and/or Edward…well…hot, desirable, fantasy worthy, and I think I better stop there before violating the site’s PG-13 policy.  In any case, we get it, we all get it no need to add to the never ending squee. Have a loves fest on your MySpace account not here. Too much condensed squee breaks teh sound barrier and annoys the neighbors.)
  4. Casting Discussion Posts

Also on tap for this week:

1) Look for the merge of the Eclipse Forum into the Quench your Thirst Forum. This is a normal procedure as many of you remember from New Moon’s Release. Now that the book is widely available there is no need for a separate discussion forum. Your post counts should not drop, however if there is a duplicate thread in both forums we may choose to lock one and move the discussion to the other. The software does not allow for us to combine threads or we would.

2) The final New Moon discussion questions will be posted very soon, be on the look out for those. As soon as that is complete we will be beginning our chapter discussion of Eclipse. This should be a very good discussion be sure to post your thoughts on the questions asked.

One final note. When the Messageboard is down please don’t use the front page comments as your own personal sounding board. Log onto chat, send an e-mail, go read a book, whatever, but stop using this page as a chat room. Reading endless off topic replies is annoying to our members.

Contest deadline tonight

Just a reminder that the two word slogan character contest being sponsored by Stephenie’s website ends tonight!  Don’t miss out. According to her webmaster:

"Just a reminder: the contest ends tonight at 11:00pm PST. At that time we will stop accepting entries and will hopefully have some winners within a few days. Good luck!"

Also remember that you have to join the readergirlz MySpace group in order to participate in the Halloween chat (I sure hope they are prepared for the 1,000’s of fans that will log in. I have visions of Stephenie’s fans killing the MySpace server). It takes them a bit of time to approve your membership, so don;t wait until the last second and miss out!

New Moon is #1!

New Moon has won first place in the Teen Reads Week vote!

Thank you to everyone who voted and congratulations, Stephenie! 😀

Check out the list of winners here!

Eclipse Character Update!

Partially because it’s been far too long since I told everyone I would finish this and partially because I have no idea when else I’ll have the time to do this, I spent the morning updating the character bios that had been begun, but not fully created. Characters like Seth Clearwater and Riley now have bios that include as much information as we are given on them. So here’s my list of updates. Enjoy them! I think I’m going to go back to sleep now. :p
