Films Struggle in the 2009 Ecomony

The Wall Street Journal has a piece on how indie movies are finding it really tough going in these economic times.

“For years, distributors in such markets as France, Germany, Japan and Latin American nations at times would pay millions of dollars for the rights to distribute American movies, like last autumn’s teen hit “Twilight” from Summit Entertainment and indie sensation “The Wrestler.”

In the 1990s, those sums frequently would cover a film’s entire budget. In more recent years, it would cover a significant amount and, with a portion of their budgets in hand, producers could more easily secure loans or equity for the rest of their financing.

The rise of copyright piracy and increasing competition from local films have held a lid on presales of foreign rights in recent years. But since the credit crunch hit Wall Street and expanded across the globe, producers say they feel lucky if presales cover half of their budgets — if anything at all.”

The LA Times lets readers know that it’s not just indie films that are struggling. Marketing dollars that used to be easily spent are now coming under bigger scrutiny.  They don’t want to cut marketing dollars, but where to spend them is like looking into a crystal ball. TV advertising remains key, and fortunately may be getting a little cheaper:

“There will be a natural savings because the election is over, and a lot of giant buyers just aren’t there,” said Rob Friedman, chief executive of Summit Entertainment, which produced last year’s hit “Twilight.” “That will translate into lower rate cards and create a better marketplace for media buyers.”

Taking all of this in consideration, the Examiner is betting that New Moon will be the number one movie at the box office in 2009. It has some serious competition from summer blockbusters Harry Potter, Transformers 2, and the kids’ movie Where the Wild things Are.

What do you think, will New Moon end up in the number 1 position at the end of the year?

The New Moon Cast Sends Italian Greetings

This video just popped up on YouTube that appeared on Italian TV. According to the babel fish translation(which is a little choppy):

“Video transmitted to the gathering of Volterra of the 19/04/2009 with special salute dedicated to all the fans Italian and Volterra! Summit thanks! Volterra thanks!”

First Look at New Moon “Where’s Rob-do” Commercial

(huff)  (puff)  Did I make it in time?  Is it not midnight yet?

When the Lexicon took me under their wing (theoretically speaking) they told me to make sure I got my video uploaded before midnight of Sunday.  They did not, however, clarify which time zone I needed to get it in by.  And then they leaned closer (with a twinkly twinkle in their eye) and said:

“If you don’t have your video up by then, you’ll be TURNED TO STONE!”  (see example below)

Brace yourselves for some scary kafuffin, guys.

NOOOOOO.  I need them!  All of them!  How can I be a writer if (as the pirates say) Stone Men Tell No Tales?

So because of these subtle hints/threats, I have spent the greater part of this Sunday trying to find Twilight stories that were Controversial or Scandalous.  And I ended up talking about Yes Man, and leaving the house and nearly getting killed at the gym (for reals…it was a dreadful embarassment).

Comments much appreciaterized.  BlogTV on Friday at blogtv.com/people/jadennation!  Lots of Oreos will be eaten and dedicated.

Around the Twilight Blogs

The Peace, Love, and Twilight blog is doing an interview with the creator of the Twilight Board game.

They are asking for fan imput on the questions. So hop on over and tell them what you want to know.

The Cullen Boys have a great account with about a chance meeting with Rachelle LeFevere and Kellan Lutz. They later met Jackson Rathbone after his 100 Monkeys Concert.

“I see this shock of red hair. An lo and behold it’s Rachelle Lefevre! I couldn’t believe it, I had a mental block on her name and all I could say to Jamie was red hair… red hair… So we wander over and join the autograph seekers and I have her sign my book and she signed Jamie’s twilight poster. She was very gracious, and beautiful her hair is so remarkable such a vibrant red.”

Over on Twicrack, you can hear about the cast at the Dills show over at the Metropole.

Which is good that the cast got to unwind because, according to Twilight Gossip, it looks like they are back to night shoots over at the alleged Cullen House. They built the house to resemble the actual house located outside of Portland. Only this one has features to enable filming so the crew doesn’t find themselves stuffed into closests or half-hanging out a window to get the shot.

New Moon Actors Talk to Aussie Press

Both Kristen Stewart and Ashley Greene gave recent interviews to Australian papers.

In talking to the Sun Herald Ashley Greene talks about the adjustment to filming schedules, being under the paparazzi’s lenses, and denies that she and Jackson Rathbone are dating, despite a mutual attraction. Ashley said:

“I’m still getting used to the go, go, go Hollywood lifestyle which has definitely thrown me into a realm where I’m struggling a little bit…As an actor you want people to know you and there are times you want your pictures taken, but it’s unnerving to walk out of a venue with friends and there are 20 people flashing lights in your face. Do you know how bright those lights are?”

Kristen talked to the Sunday Morning Herald, where she let them know that she loves the Land Down Under:

“I actually don’t mind Vegemite,” she says, laughing. “I know most Americans can’t stand the smell, taste or look of it but I like it…I love Australia and we have a lot of great family and friends down there. I can’t wait to get back…”

Nashville Fan Meets the Cast

Remember a couple of days ago when we reported on a Vancouver Sun article talking about a Nashville, TN fan and her quest to fly to Vancouver and meet members of the New Moon cast?

Well, guess who she ran into in Starbucks without even trying?

“There are two Starbucks at the corner of Thurlow and Robson and we picked the right one,” said an excited Leanne. Kellan Lutz was in line waiting to get a coffee wearing iPod ear buds.

“I said to Sara that’s Kellan and she didn’t believe it,” she told The Sun. “I said yes it is and she shut right down, she couldn’t get out of her seat.”

Leanne waited until Lutz had paid for his coffee and approached him, talking very, very fast.

“He couldn’t hear me, so I poked him in his enormous bicep,” she laughed. Lutz agreed to go around the corner to have his picture taken, to avoid further attention.

“When he went in to hug me for the photo it was very up close and personal,” she said. And it was great.”

Kellen Lutz and Peter Facinelli Read New Moon

Peter and Kellan, who both read New Moon awhile ago, decided to have a little fun with the paparazzi in LAX.

Good to know that they are able to keep up a sense of humor about all the attention.

Rumor Control: Stephenie Meyer Being Sued

OK, we are going to go out on a limb on this one even though it’s Sunday and getting an official comment is practically impossible.

On April 10th the oh so scholarly and reliable Max-Dan-Wiz site runs a story supposedly obtained from the AP claiming Stephenie Meyer stole the idea for Twilight from her former college roommate, said roommate is suing her, A BYU professor is backing the roommate, and production has halted on New Moon.

OK let’s take this out step by step:

  • Article appeared on April 10: filming has gone on since that date most notably Friday when Vancity Allie got pictures of the cast in Bella’s Birthday party attire.
  • The article claims an AP wire as their source. We can find no such record of this on the AP.
  • The article claims Dr. Peter Benton now head of the BYU English Department is backing the claim. There is no Dr. Peter Benton at BYU (but he was a character on ER or a few seasons).
  • Stephenie’s supposed former roommate must be living under the biggest rock ever if in Salt Lake City of all places she is only just now hearing that her former roommate’s success is based on a vampire novel.
  • Vampire short story in the BYU curriculum…yeah…I’m sure the BYU undergrads wrote lots of vampire tales 15 years ago right along with all those stories involving lots of swearing, drinking, and pre-marital sex.

So who fell for this nonsense?

The Insider who thought for whatever reason it was a good idea to let fans upload stories and have it appear as if it were an official The Insider story. The site is reporting the story as fact, and is also running the story with the fan made poster WITH A TURKEY in the corner as if it were real. On a quick glance other news outlets who don’t read the fine print to realize this is a fan uploaded story are linking to this story.

Others who fell for this include:

ONTD
Backseat Cuddler
Fanpop
…the list goes on. Run the words “Dr. Peter Benton and BYU” and “Heidi Stanton and BYU” though a Google search and you get tons more links.

EDITED: Official comment from Summit Entertainment regarding the portion of the story as it specifically refers to filming is as follows: “This rumor is certainly NOT true. Please let your readers know.”

EDITED: Official comment from Stephenie Meyer’s publisher regarding the portion of the story that refers to the lawsuit:

“This story is false.”
