LA Times: What Bill Condon Brings to Twilight

Bill condon handThe LA Times has a piece examening why Bill Condon is a good choice for Breaking Dawn.

“In making the choice, Summit, which has gone for a different type of director for each film in the franchise, clearly wanted someone with more Oscar chops (Condon’s won one and been nominated for a second). That’s both because the “Breaking Dawn” material is a little more complicated than the previous books and because with the franchise already an unstoppable juggernaut, they can afford to take a risk, at least a small one.

So what kind of teen-vampire fable will the man responsible for “Dreamgirls,” “Gods & Monsters” and “Kinsey” make? None of his previous directing credits are obvious analogues to this movie (though the initial frenzy over him as a candidate was a little baffling; good filmmakers reinvent themselves all the time. And it’s nothing compared to Rob Marshall, another man known for musicals, taking on “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″).”

Eclipse Women to Hit Vanity Fair

According to Gossip Cop:

Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Nikki Reed and Elizabeth Reaser (among others) participated in a photo shoot last Sunday for an issue set to arrive on stands around the time Eclipse hits theaters.”

This isn’t the first time Vanity Fair has done a major Twilight shoot. They were one of the first magazines to get onboard before Twilight came out. (See video below). The picture of Kristen Stewart squeezing Robert Pattinson’s face from that shoot has become legendary.

Bill Condon: Highlights From A Diverse Career

Bill-CondonsoloSo now that Bill Condon has been announced as the director of Breaking Dawn, everyone wants to know just who is he? Given the previous three directors here’s where he stacks up just on statistics:

He’s the same age as Catherine Hardwicke, but has directed the same number of  films as Catherine, Chris Weitz, and David Slade combined.

Like Chris Weitz, he is both a writer and a director. Also like Chris, he was nominated for an Oscar based on his writing.  Bill was nominated an Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay for CHICAGO and he won the Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay for GODS AND MONSTERS.

– Hollywood’s best and brightest (and also most difficult) have worked with Bill Condon such as Oscar nominees and winners: Ian McKellen, Liam Neeson, Brendon Fraser, Laura Linney, Tim Hutton, John Lithgow, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson.

– Like David Slade he’s done the horror thing by directing one of the Clive Barker Candyman series.

-Like Chris Weitz and Catherine Hardwicke, he respects adaptation from the originating source material, and doesn’t want to lose site of the popular work that everyone fell in love with. (See the interview with Charlie Rose below.)

-Like Catherine he thrives on character driven/relationships like Dreamgirls, Gods and Monsters, and Kinsey (Check out Bill talking about Dreamgirls in the video below.)

Now here’s the next item which people should be asking: who do you think he’ll want to be in the Breaking Dawn Cast who he’s worked with before? Hollywood, aside from talent, is all about connections, reputation, and previous experience. There are a lot of new vampires in Breaking Dawn, and we fully expect a lot of them to be cut or combined like the way Anna Kendrick’s Jessica is a combination of the book’s Jessica and Lauren. On the other hand, some are uncuttable due to basic plot. What leaps to mind right away is the Denali Coven in particular Irina, because without Irina going to the Volturi there’s no back end of the story.

So…who appears to be  twenty-thirty something, is an UBER Twilight fan, fits the age range, and has worked with Bill Condon before. There’s one name that instantly jumps up. The first person to come up with the answer that we are thinking of in our comments gets the autographed photo of their choice from our collection.

Robert Pattinson: Time Magazine Influential 100

Robert Pattinson is listed in Time Magazine’s annual 100 People Who Most Influence our world. The write-up to go along with the nomination was penned by none other than Chris Weitz!

“I have to be careful about what I write here because it will be tweeted the moment TIME hits the stands. And if I say something bad about Rob Pattinson, I’m dead meat. That’s the devotion the Twilight films inspire. It’s certainly not how he planned it. And though I am continually impressed by the aplomb with which he handles the hysteria, I occasionally think he would take it all back if given the chance. Because essentially, Rob, 23, is a reserved, bookish sort of specimen, a guy who’d rather spend the night at the corner table in the pub with friends — a bit of a weirdo, frankly, in the best sense.”

Eclipse Reshoots Day1

CrewmeadowAbout two weeks ago news broke that there would be reshoots of some material for Eclipse. We pointed out, as did Peter Facinelli at the Arlington, VA Official Twilight Convention, that this wasn’t unusual they had several reshoots for Twilight late in the game. For Twilight, the reshoots involved the flashback of  Peter, Nikki, and Kellan in the period dress and the Quileutes in the forest. Why wasn’t Liz Reaser in those shots you may ask? Wasn’t Esme hungry that day? The answer is that Liz was shooting a TV series (now defunct) and couldn’t make it.

Hit Fix also established that the specific kind of re-shoots were what is known in the industry as “pick-up shots”. Peter further explained what that meant in Arlington.  He said (I’m paraphrasing because I didn’t have it recorded) that sometimes you do these because they realize later there’s crew equipment visible in the shot, a continuity error, the lighting wasn’t quite right, or they want to add in something else to bridge the material based on the edit. Peter further joked, “I don’t have to do re-shoots, I got all my stuff right this time.”  He then reiterated that they do these things all the time.

So what exactly did they “pick-up”? There was lots of Internet angst with people thinking it was the meadow proposal scene since the meadow area location was secured, but Summit had said that it wasn’t that scene.  Well it looks like one of the locals, Mandy, may have gotten to the bottom of it:

“So they indeed used the “meadow” set today with both Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart. It wasn’t Robert Pattinson on set, so it wasn’t the “meadow proposal scene” or anything.[Lexicon note: Rob as verified by multiple media sources didn’t arrive in Vancouver airport for hours after this shoot began]

I think there was confusion about just what was filmed at the meadow…. MANY things!!

That particular area has vast surroundings suitable for various shots involving a field, meadow, forest, water, mountains etc.”

So given that, as Mandy reports, the land is basic, vast woodland, and it involved Jacob and Bella…well it could be just about any Jake and Bella scene on the reservation, your guess is as good as ours.

Check out Mandy’s entire report here.

Full Press Release: Stephenie Meyer Named as Producer

At this time we still don’t know if it will be one or two movies. The Lexicon staff is betting on two films, because we feel there is enough material as cited by Stephenie Meyer and Melissa Rosenberg.  Assuming it is two movies, and assuming they film from late October 2010 until mid spring 2012we are figuring on a Thanksgiving or Christmas 2011 release on the first and a July 2012 release on the second.  Please note these dates are conjecture on our part based on previous experience and not insider info.

The other EXCITING news is that Stephenie Meyer has been named as one of the films producers. This would indicate a greater level of creative control, which most fans (we believe) would say is a good thing. See the full press release below.
