USA Today: Why Louisiana Is the New Hot Filming Spot

Lots of fans were baffled when Louisiana was announced as a filming location for Breaking Dawn. We even openly scoffed at the idea on Twitter. USA Today gives a bit of an explanation:

“The boom is most visible around New Orleans. In 2009, 22 movies and TV shows filmed there. Records have already been broken in 2010; by July, 24 projects had shot there.

“We’re way ahead of the curve in the New Orleans region,” says Katie Gunnell, interim director of the city’s Office of Film and Television. “The city has seen an incredible bump in applications for 2011 as well.”

Across the state, work is consistent and year-round, despite hurricane season and blazing summer temperatures. “We’ve maintained 20 to 25 productions at any given time during the year,” Stelly says. “We’ve doubled for New York City, Los Angeles, the Northwest, basically Anytown, USA.”

Those who have shot there point to several factors contributing to the region’s appeal: diversity of scenery, financial incentives and proficient crews.

“You can get an 1800s look, you can get a Parisian look,” says Todd Lewis, producer of The Chaperone. “You can get suburbs, you can get the country. It’s got a little bit of everything.”

Kristen Stewart In The Daily Mail

kristen elleukKristen Stewart talked to the UK’s Daily Mail to promote The Runaways, which just came out on DVD. She talks about her Twilight experience and media perception. The way the reporter describes Kristen’s reaction is the one that we have always personally had with her, that she trips over her words because she is so wrapped up in really wanting to say what she means the right way, not that she is arrogant or doesn’t care.

“It was tough because I only had a really tiny window of free time, but I wanted to make the movie. And I didn’t want to get any older because I’m already older than Joan was when she was in the Runaways,” says Stewart. “I just crammed it in, and hoped that it would work. And it did. It’s nice to switch to movies like this between Twilights, but I’m excited to go and do the next couple of years of Bella’s life.”

She arrives for our interview looking elegantly sophisticated in a black mini-dress with her dark hair pulled up behind her head in a bun. Yet she confesses: “When I dress up, I have to have a lot of help. I was in a T-shirt until a few minutes ago.”

Like the teenage Joan Jett, Stewart has a sullen, almost surly look, which proves to be misleading, because she willingly attempts to answer questions, thinking carefully before she speaks but sometimes finding herself unable to articulate her thoughts.

“It’s impossible to always get across what I’m trying to say, but, if I just stay honest, then I’m not going to look back on any of these interviews and wonder what I was trying to do or be,” she says.”

Jackson Rathbone in One Magazine

Jackson Rathbone is in the French language publication, One. The Twilight Ladies site provided a translation:

One magazine: In the United States Eclipse and The Last Airbender are out at the same time. What movie do you want to see at the number one spot in the box office?
JR: To be honest, I consider myself lucky just to be in two movies at the same time! Before that, I enjoyed a quantity of projects that nobody went to see in theaters. Things are finally going a good way for me. It was time!

ON: How did you land the role of Sokka?
JR: When I met M. Night Shyamalan, the film director, three years ago, we immediately got on. Initially, I auditioned for the role of Prince Zuko and he told me he was thinking of another role for me. Then I never heard of the film for a year. Then he got back to me and asked me to play Sokka and I was hired. I’m a fan of the animated series, I’ve always loved fantasy stories with such rich mythology. And with this role, I finally have a chance to show that I can do more than just to play a vampire. It also gives me the opportunity to be much less serious than Jasper, as Sokka has many comic scenes.

ON: Are you tired of the role of Jasper?
JR: No, but I try to play very different characters from film to film. I don’t do the same thing twice. I gravitate naturally towards to projects in which the public don’t expect to see me.”

Official Twilight Convention in Toronto a Hit

The Toronto Star reported on this past weekend’s Official Twilight Convention run by Creation Entertainment.

“Sunday was bright and beautiful, but inside the twists and turns of the Westin Convention Centre, 500 girls and women hardly cared. When pursuing love with a vampire, sunlight is an easy sacrifice.

This weekend was the Toronto stop of the touring Twilight Convention, a gathering for fans of Stephenie Meyer’s rabidly popular tale.

Almost 100 million copies of the four-novel series have been sold, and three movies have been made about the teenager Bella Swan and her romances with the vampire Edward Cullen and werewolf Jacob Black. A fourth film is set to be released in 2011.

“I cannot wait for Breaking Dawn,” said Santyna Brar, 14, who attended the entire three-day convention with her cousin, Sonali Kumar, 15.

The two Mississauga teens spent $299 each to get front-row seats for Q&As with Twilight actors[Lexicon note: you can get general admission day passes for as little as $25], plus photos, autographs and tickets to a costumed Vampire Ball on Saturday night.

None of the three principal actors — Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner — were here, though the cast of The Hillywood Show’s Twilight satire did feature a mock Jacob who remained shirtless all day. Brar and Kumar had a great time.

“I never knew stars could be so normal,” said Kumar. At the ball, one of the younger actors, Boo Boo Stewart, sat down at the cousins’ table to chat.”

The convention is next coming to New Jersey, Minneapolis, Chicago, Salt Lake City, Sacramento and other locations.

We weren’t able to live Tweet the convention this weekend because we would have gone broke with the charges (*shakes fist at AT&T*), however we will have a full write up for you this afternoon. Coming tomorrow, we have a video of an EPIC and we do mean EPIC prank thought up by Booboo Stewart and his dad that was executed with a little help from Bronson Pelletier and Kiowa Gordon. We filmed the prank from behind the scenes planning stages to the actual prank. You’re not going to want to miss this.
