Fan Perspective: What’s It Like To Attend an Awards Show

One of our readers, Cheryl, recently attended the People’s Choice Awards. She wrote up for us what it was like from a fan’s perspective.

Our People’s Choice Awards Experience

My dear friend Laura Brown invited me to attend the People’s Choice Awards with her and I couldn’t turn that down. I have never been to any event where there would be so many stars in one location. This past year was what I called my “Twilight year” since I went to many events involving the celebrities of the movie. I was so excited but began to worry since my flight from San Jose to L.A. was canceled and delayed twice. I made it there very late at night the night before. On our way to the Nokia, Laura surprised me with a night’s stay at the JW Marriott. It was a great room and you needed a key to enter the elevator. Our room had a view of the Red Carpet (blue actually).

We first decided to venture down to the red carpet to find out the details since we had tickets for VIP 3rd row and also VIP red carpet access. We quickly went to go change and go down to where we needed to enter the carpet area. We saw lots of media on one side and bleachers on the other side roped off with people already sitting. I was in a state of shock knowing we would be standing there while people arrived. While we stood there, friends could see us in the background of the live stream.

As the time went on we got to see many celebrities. The people we wanted to see the most arrived last and by that time we were running to get inside before the doors closed.

Inside we sat on the far left side and I looked across the way to see people like Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, The Kardashians, etc. But….me and Laura scanned the audience to see our most favorite people but they hadn’t shown up yet. During the commercial breaks we noticed people running to get to their favorite celebrities and tried to get to some. I did get to one person for sure I had to meet which was Stephen Moyer from True Blood.

We continued to scan the audience during the show and when a large amount of security arrived we knew who had finally arrived. Taylor, Kristen and Rob of course. What amazed me with our VIP red carpet tickets that we were able to keep our camera’s that everyone else couldn’t have. We tried to get to them but the amount of security kept us from our main goal. So close but yet so far away. I have enclosed a picture that Laura found on the internet and if you look in the far left corner you will see us and I was trying to get a picture but Rob’s personal body guard had totally blocked him. It seemed weird that all these other celebrities were very approachable and they didn’t have bodyguards.

After the show was over and having been thoroughly covered in confetti we made our way over to the Conga room with our tickets for the after party. We had to pass through 3 different check points to enter. They had the most amazing food I have ever had and we enjoyed having the “Betty White” drink they provided. There was so much food that I didn’t even get to. It was catered by Wolfgang Puck. We only saw a couple celebrities there and continued to have a blast.
I had to really savor this time because I don’t know when or where if I will ever have this opportunity again. I owe Laura so much for this experience I am forever in her debt. When we went back to the hotel room we laughed when we saw all the confetti that covered the floor that had been inside our dress.

Eclipse Is the Second Most Profitable Movie of 2010

Most Profitable Movies Released in 2010

There are other movies who brought in big box office dollars, but because they cost so much more to make. In other words they flopped or barely broke even. A lot of small budget movies raked in megaprofit when they landed in the top 100 films of the year. Two examples were from Summit Entertainment: Letters to Juliet and Remember Me

What’s interesting is to look at the box office totals for the above movies. Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3 are the only two that came in ahead of Eclipse. Harry Potter’s box office run has not yet closed out; however given it’s rate of intake it’s not likely to overtake Eclipse.

USA Today: Twilight Saga Sales Still High All Novels in the Top 100

twilight-booksSales totals for the Twilight Saga have dropped off, as you would expect for any series whose last book was published over two years ago. However, the books are still incredibly strong sellers.

“Call it escapism or merely a fondness for good stories, but in the midst of a recession at home and wars abroad, fiction seized a record-high share of the best sellers of 2010.

The year’s most popular author: Stieg Larsson, the late Swedish novelist, whose Millennium trilogy of crime thrillers captured the top three spots on USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list for 2010, based on data collected all year.

Overall, novelists — from Jonathan Frazen to Nicholas Sparks— accounted for 77% of the weekly best sellers, up from 76% in 2009 and the highest percentage since the list began in 1993.

Data collected for the list — which includes e-book sales — also show:

• Romance, which tends to sell best in hard times, accounted for 12% of best sellers, up from 10% in 2009. One factor: Readers who wouldn’t be caught dead with risqué covers in public enjoyed the privacy of reading romantic e-books.

• After a remarkable two-year run at the top of the annual list, Stephenie Meyer‘s popularity began to cool off. She accounted for 4% of best sellers the list tracked, down from 11% in 2009. The vampire and paranormal craze among readers isn’t dead, but it’s fading, accounting for just 9% of best sellers, down from 17% in 2009.”

See the whole story on USA Today.

USA Today also has the top selling 100 books of the year listed. Unlike other lists (NY Times, Publishers Weekly, etc) they don’t do sub-categories or eliminate categories all together. So, you get a really clear picture as to exactly what America is reading! Here’s where the Stephenie Meyer novels/novellas ranked in the top 100 books sold in 2010:

  • 10    Breaking Dawn
  • 11     Bree Tanner
  • 13     Eclipse
  • 24     Twilight
  • 27     New Moon
  • 81     The Host

Other notable YA/children’s novels making a strong presence on  the list were all three books in the Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins, the Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan, and the Wimpy Kid Series by Jeff Kinney.

Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Dakota Fanning On Elle’s Most Wanted List

Elle has a feature of pop art by Richard Phillips. He covers what he defines as the Most Wanted celebrities.

“Now he’s [Richard Phillips] upping the ante with Most Wanted, a series of 10 portraits of the hottest young celebrities—from Leo DiCaprio and Robert Pattinson to the Taylors (Swift and Momsen), all rendered from those aforementioned red carpet images—opening at White Cube on January 28. The series began as an assignment for pastels of five leading men for V Man in the summer of 2009. “It’s hard to imagine a pastel having any consequence into today’s age, but when my pastel of Robert Pattinson went out into the media during Miami Art Basel, it was at the same time of the New Moon premiere and it went out onto the Internet like crazy. All the New Moon websites and blogs were going nuts; a drawing, an artwork of their star was an amazing thing. It gave me a sense that there was a real desire to see this work,” Phillips said during a recent studio visit, comparing the settings behind these “completely and deliberately synthesized experiences” to “the grain alcohol of media—you take all these rotten potatoes and put it through copper tubing and it’s going to come out a clear liquid.”

In speaking about Kristen Stewart and his inspiration, Phillips said,“I think the easiest one right off the bat was Kristen because of her relationship with Pattinson; plus, New Moon and Twilight were such a success. And just at that time she was hitting it big with The Runaways with Dakota Fanning. The Runaways was kind of a great but wasted opportunity, because the film was horribly directed and terribly shot, but their performances isolated from that were great.”

W Magazine Features Dakota Fanning On Best Performances List

W Magazine in an intro to their best performances article states, “The most remarkable moments in film this past year weren’t 3-D action sequences but characters so real they hurt…In the end, the largest measure of these performances is not their adherence to fact but the vivacity and depth of the characterizations. This portfolio is a salute to their greatness. In choosing these actors, we were not trying to guess at nominations or awards. Rather, we were trying to acknowledge and salute the work, to acknowledge and thank the actors for telling the truth—even when the truth was fiction.”

They then single out 20 of the top character portrayals of the year.

Here’s what Dakota had to say about real life and screen life.

“It was important for me to go to a normal high school. I have a locker, which was a big deal. My mom had to buy me a lock and teach me how to use it. It’s the little things: Where do you go at lunch? How do you open the locker? I wanted a yearbook! Now I have a lot of signatures in my yearbook—‘Have a good summer’ and all that.”

Happy Birthday Jen (Be My Escape)!

Some folks who help us out here at the Lexicon are new comers, and some like Jen have been here since we  practically started back in 2006. Over the years Jen has helped us with everything from being our crack music reporter, to bringing coverage from live events, to frankly just a lot of really unglamorous admin duties.

Jen doesn’t really like being in front of cameras, or making public presentations. The first time she spoke at a convention we hid the program from her and didn’t tell her she was a speaker until about 2 minutes before she went one…she survived.  Jen is the one running around behind the scenes like a crazy person to make sure that everything on camera or on stage goes well. Her behind the scenes efficiency has earned her a nickname that Bronson Pelletier came up with, “The Ninja”

We absolutely couldn’t do what we do without her. Please chime in and wish Jen a happy birthday!

Parks and Recreation To Do Twilight Themed Episode

Buzz Sugar talked with Parks and Recreation star Aziz Ansari about an upcoming Twilight episode when the show returns from hiatus.

BuzzSugar: The third episode of the season revolves around the Twilight books, and a few months ago, you live-tweeted the Twilight movies rather passionately. Did you have anything to do with making the storyline happen on the show?
Aziz Ansari: No, but it did help that it was still pretty fresh in my mind, that I knew the movies, I knew all these details. I haven’t seen [the episode] yet so I don’t know what made it in, but there’s a lot of scenes where we improvise stuff, and I remembered real things from Twilight, and I had real questions. That was the funny thing, because Donna is in the Twilight group and she’s read all the books and knows everything, and I’d read a little bit and had a discussion with her for real, so it actually worked out really well for the arc of the story.

Buzz: Have you actually read any of the books?
AA: I haven’t read any of them, I just saw the first two movies. When I did the [MTV] Movie Awards, those were obviously the big movies, so I watched those two movies for research for that, so I knew a little bit about the Twilight world.”
