Twilight in Baton Rouge: A Resident Fan’s View

One of our Lexicon readers, Kathryn, is from Baton Rouge. We asked her to write up a short piece on what it has been like from a fan’s perspective on having the Twilight cast and crew in her hometown.

“So, I’m originally from Baton Rouge, LA where Bill Condon and Co. are currently filming Breaking Dawn. But, sadly, I am currently residing in Illinois while I finish graduate school. Needless to say when Summit announced that some Twilight filming would be done in my hometown, I was upset. My mother has been keeping me updated with what’s going on with the filming.

Firstly, the cast (and crew, I assume) are staying in a complex which is about 3 minutes from where my parents live. I tried to hang out there one day when I was home for Christmas with no luck in catching a glimpse. For most of the week I was home, the actors were away. And in case you’re not familiar with the area, unless the actors actually come out and walk around a nearby shopping area they will not be seen. You have to have a security code to even get into the private parking garage which is attached to the complex where they are staying. It’s completely enclosed. Security is tight there at any time. With the Twilight cast and crew there you might as well be trying to break into Fort Knox.

I talked to my mom on Tuesday, and she informed me that they have been setting up all week to film right down the street from where she works, at the Department of Education downtown. Her building is right across from the Mississippi River, and they’re filming in Arsenal Park…just in case anyone would like to safely and LEGALLY attempt to scope out the filming this weekend.

This morning my mom sent me an email to say they were moving in set pieces (statuary, columns, plant life), some props, and the main actor’s trailers. They were also getting ready to block off the area from through traffic. Then, around 3pm my mom sent me another message: She had just received an email saying that the lights to her building and parking garage were going to be cut off so they wouldn’t interfere with filming. Supposedly, they will be there filming all weekend.

Another interesting piece of information I received was one of my mom’s co-workers has a daughter who is actually an extra in the movie. Her role is  and she gets $100 per day of filming. When she was cast she had to sign a confidentiality agreement stating that when she is called into filming she will not tell anyone the actual location.”

TY to Kathryn for sharing her story.

Isle Esme Shooting Location Featured in Architectural Digest

TY to Jason for the heads up on this!

Architectural Digest has a fantastic photo spread and story on the house that served as the Isle Esme location. According to AD, “Halfway between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, off the BR-101 highway, lies a corner of Brazil bounded by forested mountains that edge their way down to the sea. The Saco do Mamanguá, a tropical fjord, cuts between the mainland and the peninsula of Juatinga, where ridges approaching 1,600 feet frame a narrow bay; this pristine spot is where businessman Ícaro Fernandes, his wife, Cristina, and their five children, ranging in age from three to 24, come to trade life in the urban jungle of São Paulo for waterskiing and dolphin-watching. On weekends, the clan braves São Paulo’s notorious traffic to make the nearly three-hour drive to the colonial town of Paraty, where they hop onto a speedboat for the short ride to their beachfront home. ”

Here’s the master bedroom’s (seen above) description, “The walls and ceiling of the master bedroom are covered in woven-straw panels, the work of artisans in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.”

Leading out of the master bedroom, “Like a rope bridge in the jungle, a walkway with eucalyptus railings spans from the master bedroom on one side of the living room across to the children’s rooms.”

Here’s the View from the living room. You can see where the flotilla of photographers were moored while filming was going on.”Friends moor their boats right off the beach when they visit. The plantation chairs and other outdoor furniture, all made of tropical hardwoods, are from Bali and Brazil.”

You can read more on the history of the house here, and see an awesome slide show here

J Jenks Scene Filmed

As for who is playing J Jenks, Summit has never officially confirmed. We don’t know why that is exactly. Going on the last batch of actors who were announced, but no specific role attached to their name, we believe it is one of two people. Either would be a great choice as the role does not have to be a race specific one to advance the plot.

Security at Louisiana Filming Facility Tight, And They Mean Business

Scene, a magazine that covers the burgeoning film industry in Louisiana, interviewed the head of security at the compound where Breaking Dawn will be filming. Coincidentally, the magazine’s own offices are located within the same compound which is comprised of several buildings, over multiple acres, surrounded by a large fence. When talking about dealing with people (fans or paparazzi) crashing the set, they have a zero tolerance policy, and the law to back them up. If ever there was a “don’t try this at home, kids” warning that applied to Twilight filming, THIS IS IT!

“That statute of Louisiana’s criminal law states that, “Unauthorized entry of a place of business is the intentional entry by a person without authority into any structure or onto any premises, belonging to another, that is completely enclosed by any type of physical barrier that is at least six feet in height and used in whole or in part as a place of business.” Those convicted of felony trespass on the studio lot are subject to imprisonment at hard labor for up to six years and a fine of up to $1000.

“We will absolutely prosecute every person who trespasses,” says Achee. “There have been six who trespassed before and they have all been caught.” When asked how he knew only six had trespassed before, Achee’s answer came quick: “Security cameras. The property is covered with high definition security cameras. A camera mounted on the [main building] can capture the license plate of a car all the way on the other side of the property.” The security camera system video is stored to a source that is backed up offsite. Additionally, the system has a back-up power supply that allows it to continue operating in the event of a power failure.

Achee and his crew of security officers are authorized to detain any trespassers by force until local law enforcement arrives to complete the felony arrest. We asked him if he planned on seeing any young teenage girls arrested, Achee said, “Absolutely. I think of this place as a home. You wouldn’t want somebody trespassing in your home, and if you did, you’d defend yourself. That’s what we’re doing here, it doesn’t matter who it is.”

And just to cover ourselves legally, the Lexicon will continue the policy that it has had since 2008. If something is filmed in the open and people are able to obtain footage by standing on public property or private property with permission and capture footage we will publish it. Any footage obtained by breaking and entering, harassing of cast and crew, or any other illegal means we will not knowingly run.

Breaking Dawn Set Broken Into By Brazilian TV Crew

The Brazilian TV show Panico somehow managed to get by the the barriers set up at the Isle Esme location and film a bit of what went on inside the house at Ilse Esme, via hidden camera. According to Sérgio Sá Leitão, the president of Rio Filme, the group did not halt production. There was also a brief incident with a helicopter that buzzed the set that caused a slight delay due to the noise.

The video has been pulled down, though there are some still shots popping up around the Internet. Since the footage was obtained by trespassing we are not running the footage if it is reposted. It was taken down due to copyright claim via Summit. Footage obtained standing behind a barrier is one thing, but actually crashing a closed set with a hidden camera is another. It is not known at his time how the individual got on and if he/she had any insider help

Twilight Poison has full coverage of the incident including a history of the Panico TV show and how crashing events(like the Oscars and Michael Jackson’s funeral) is what they do.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart on the Beach at Isle Esme Location

Well, you knew they didn’t truck all that extra sand in for nothing! We are going to put these below a spoiler cut. It’ s not a huge plot reveal, but since it’s Isle Esme, an actual filmed moment, and some people are trying to stay spoiler free, it’s under a spoiler cut. All images from Ego and IG via Foforks

Filming Inside the Isle Esme House Today

BlogTwiBrasil has some really excellent translation of a story that originates here. Click for full spoilers.

“Às 10h30, os atores iniciaram a filmagem dentro da casa e por volta de 13h30 eles foram vistos na praia particular, localizada em frente à mansão, que vem servindo de locação para a quarta saga do filme.

At 10h30 am, the actors began shooting inside the house and around  1h30 pm they were seen on the private beach, located in front of the mansion.

The movement of production employees began shortly after 8 am. Before, the weather was bad in the region with strong winds and cloudy skies. After this time, the clouds dissipated and the sun came up.”
The long and short of it comes down to, as we earlier reported, with the public held at bay 200 yards off-shore and filming inside, unless they come out on the beach, no one will see a thing. Given the weather, we hope the flotilla off shore is not sea sick.

Breaking Dawn Filming to Start Today in Paraty

As we reported yesterday, the production company has moved from Rio to an area called Paratay where the Isle Esme scenes are to be shot. The cast arrived at that location via helicopter.

Specifically the scenes are shot on the island resort we featured yesterday, but the cast and crew are not staying on the resort because it is not able to handle overnight accommodations for such a large team of people. The cast and crew are at a site off-island and brought there each day. Yesterday was a travel and rest day due to the overnight  shooting in the Lapa District the night before.

I can’t find the source at the moment, but one reason given for the back and forth to the island is that the resort is fairly open to the elements and if it rains (part of current forecast) it isn’t very protected and they’ll have to go for different shots.

The navy is providing security for both the inn where the cast is currently staying and the filming site. Apparently people have tried to access both sites and have been turned away. It seems that no one is able to be closer than 200 yards in either case. There is at least one major Brazilian entertainment outlet that has rented a boat and is at anchor at the established 200 yard perimeter.  Whether or not they will be able to capture any footage besides arrivals on the island is unknown.

We will post arrival footage in plain site when it is available, other footage will be below spoiler cuts. If you are visiting our page directly, the spoiler cut is obvious like the one at the bottom of this entry marker “spoiler click to read more”. Realize that if you are coming to our site via Twitter, Facebook or a direct link the spoiler cut is not there(just the way the software works), but you will see the term “spoilers below the cut” so if you don’t want to be spoiled, STOP when you see the word “spoiler”

The consensus seems to be a filming starting this afternoon, but that info has changed several times.

TwiBlogBrasil has a good rundown with great translation.
