Pel’s Spoilerific Eclipse Review

Ok, let me start by saying that Eclipse is my favorite book in the series. So if anything, I think I was more inclined to be picky about this one. I’ve now seen the movie twice: once in IMAX about three weeks ago in LA with a bunch of movie critics and last night in NYC at midnight with fans. Taylor and Kristen are seriously starting to look relaxed at these things. Check out Moviefone’s recap of TwilightNight here.

Access Hollywood Interviews Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner at NYC preview

FYI, the reason Kristen looks so hot and sweaty is that it was 94 degrees and like 90% humidity. It’s been like August temperatures in NYC lately!

Getting excited for tonight! If you are in the NYC area Pel is going to be in New York City for the midnight showing of Eclipse along with the crew from CafePress.  She’s going to be at the AMC 34th Street Theater in Manhattan.

Pel will be guest tweeting from the CafePress account, interviewing fans, and there will be some cool giveaways of CafePress products. So if you are in the NYC area, come on down and say hi!

Variety Reviews Eclipse

Xavier water

I feel like I am living in some kind of weird alternative universe here. First The Hollywood reporter gives a positive review to Eclipse, and now Variety has done the same! Someone pinch me, because I swear I’m hallucinating!

“Taking a cue from the “Harry Potter” series, which maintains continuity on the writing and casting fronts while introducing a different feel with each change of director, the “Twilight” producers have embraced a variety of different visions behind the camera. Capitalizing on her indie sensibility and keenly observed teen insights, Catherine Hardwicke set the tone with the low-budget first film, with Chris Weitz expanding (and flattening) the world with his broader, daytime soap-opera style in “New Moon.” Now, the task falls to Slade, who clearly understands how to work with actors while also demonstrating a welcome competence in the action and melodrama departments.

It’s no easy task taking a piece of material auds already know inside-out and spinning it in such a way that individual scenes still generate tension and suspense. Slade sets us on edge from the outset with an atmospheric vignette merely alluded to in the book, as small-town boy Riley (Xavier Samuel) is ambushed and bitten by an unseen vampire in shadowy Seattle (looking every bit as ominous as Tim Burton’s Gotham City).

Slade and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg wisely intercut these puppy-love scenes with uneasy horror-movie jolts. After all, “Eclipse” builds not to a showdown between Edward and Jacob (no matter how often he takes off his shirt, the poor wolfboy will never be Bella’s first choice), but to an uneasy alliance between the Cullen clan and Jacob’s tribe of shape-shifters, united to protect Bella from the vengeance-seeking Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard, taking over the role from Rachelle Lefevre) and her army of “newborns,” undisciplined but super-strong new vampires.”

The Hollywood Reporter Reviews Eclipse

The Hollywood Reporter has their Eclipse review up. It’s not too spoilery as reviews go, but the movie is discussed. One interesting facet is that THR points out that in their opinion the major flaws of previous movies were not writing flaws per say, but what one is left to assume were acting, directorial and/or editing flaws.

It’s an interesting critique especially when movie critics are coming out loving this movie and Melissa Rosenberg has written all three, food for thought on whether fans who critique understand the difference between words on written page, words delivered by actors, words coached and shot by directors, and where the artistic license and interpretation for good or for bad lies.  It makes for interesting discussion if nothing else as to if the flaws in any given scenes were lack of insight on the writer’s, actor’s or director’s part or a combo of all three.  In short, it may not be obvious to the untrained eye where the fault lies.

‘It took three films, but “The Twilight Saga” finally nails just the right tone in “Eclipse,” a film that neatly balances the teenage operatic passions from Stephenie Meyer’s novels with the movies’ supernatural trappings.

Where the first film leaned heavily on camp and the second faltered through caution and slickness, “Eclipse” moves confidently into the heart of the matter — a love triangle that causes a young woman to realize choices lead to consequences that cannot be reversed.

With the momentum of a movie series that sees installments arriving like clockwork every year, “Eclipse” looks primed to be the most successful film yet in Summit Entertainment’s franchise. The action is pretty much relegated to the climax, but it’s nifty enough that young men may get into the series too even if “Eclipse” isn’t their first choice on a Friday night.”

Fans Get to See Eclipse and Get a Surprise Visit and Eclipse Review

Last night visitors to Twilight fansites got to see a preview of Eclipse right across from where the cast was taping the Jimmy Kimmel show. Well, here’s what happened according to some of the Lexicon’s representatives:

Pam’s reaction:

“Thank you soooo much!!! We had Dakota, Peter, Elizabeth and I think Xavier in person show up at the theater.

Rob, Kristen and Taylor were on a live feed at the Jimmy Kimmel show (which is across the street from the Chinese 6). Someone shouted, “Rob come here” and he repeated it so they heard us!!! We were about 15 minutes or so into the movie when the screen went blank… and they said there was some difficulties and them Jimmy K. shows on our screen. That’s when they introduced R, K and T…. then the others came out in front of the audience.

Thanks again for a very memorable night!!!! Can’t wait to see this movie again and again!!!”

Clair’s reaction:

“It was great; you’re going to love it!! Thanks SO much @twilightlexicon for the opportunity to see Eclipse tonight. *HUGS* @DAVID_A_SLADE You are a genius, sir. I bow to you!!! Thank you for making such an AMAZING film. XO.”

Eclipse Soundtrack Review

We were lucky enough to get an advanced listen to the Eclipse Soundtrack and let me first start by saying that is in my humble opinion the best of the three.  I know that is a big statement to make but this music is incredible. There is a very clear vibe to the soundtrack and it fits with that of Eclipse.  Shelley (something blue) and I (Jen/be my escape) both reviewed the soundtrack and have created a favorite’s list.  Essentially we each chose the songs we liked the most to talk about in detail.

Jen’s Choices

Heavy in Your ArmsFlorence + The Machine– This is my absolute favorite song! The music, the lyrics, everything about it is just perfection.  From the heavy drum and piano beats to the haunting voice of Florence Welch this song is intense and IMHO a fantastic Bella song.  The lyrics just speak to Bella and what she is going through in Eclipse. I have absolutely no idea if it is a Bella song but to me it is.  Listen to the second verse when you get it and let me know what you think! If you want to get a feel for the sound of the song check out Cosmic Love, so good.

My LoveSia– Strings and piano, two of my favorite things, comprise the back drop for this beautiful song.  I know Twilighters have been a fan of Sia for long time and they will not be disappointed.  This song has a similar feel to Breathe Me but with a completely different meaning. Sia’s soulful voice brings the emotion of Eclipse to life.

OursThe Bravery– This is the epitome of a graduation song or for some reason it reminds me of the song that would play over the credits of a movie, either way it is fantastic.  I loved the tempo of the song

Shelley’s Choices

Fanfarlo’s Atlas is a fun and light song that reminds me a little bit of Shooting the Moon by Ok Go on the New Moon soundtrack. This song seems like the best fit for a more light hearted scene in the movie.

Eastern Conference Champions’ A Million Miles An Hour has darker tones as well, but with a more bluesy tone to the voice. I could definitely see this as a dangerous newborn tune.

The Black Keys Chop and Change is funky and a little creepy, kind of a funk mix. It just struck me upon my second listening that this must be a Rosalie after-the-change song. I really hope so! It certainly has that bad girl vibe. I love this song. (I loved this one too!)

Overall the Soundtrack is amazing and I can’t wait to see where all the music fits. Don’t forget for today only you can listen to the Eclipse Soundtrack check it out and tell us what you think. Which is your Favorite song??

EW Reviews the Eclipse Soundtrack

soundrtrackcovereEntertainment Weekly has reviewed the Eclipse Soundtrack and given it a B+ rating.

“At this point, even the most entrenched haters of Twilight’s vampire-sparkle voodoo concede the soundtracks’ indie-rock bona fides — though they might wish the music came shrouded in a plain brown wrapper.

Like last October’s New Moon collection, Eclipse operates as a sort of alt-party primer: original songs from the genre’s current varsity squad, with a smattering of JV newbies.”
