Random Thoughts On: Blogging, Microblogging, and Communication in the Electronic Age:
Lots of round and round good discussion today with several people on rumor, gossip, the role and future of online media, and where it may all go in the future. So here are my thoughts in true Generation X style (AKA bullet-pointed because I was raise on MTV Sesame Street, which means I have a short attention span, I multi-task, and I skim until engaged by content).
~Newspapers in the US are closing at an alarming rate
~Magazine readership in hard print copy is down
~Online sites are reaching more and more people daily
~Whatever content you chose to put out there and in whatever form you chose to put it comes with the knowledge that people will love it, hate it, or could care less. Blogs are like children, as long as you aren’t breaking the law, no one should tell you how to run yours. At the same time, if people aren’t happy for whatever reason, they will vote with their feet and move to their own media to express their discontent. It’s basics rights and responsibilities.
~For years the New York Times has existed as well as The Weekly World News
Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons existed at the same time as Edgar R Murrow and Walter Cronkite
~Today blogs exist from the Huffington Post, CNN, the Drudge Report to TMZ, The Awful Truth, and Lainey Gossip
~TV has everything from PBS to the Playboy Channel
~Movies have everything from Gone With the Wind to Debbie does Dallas
~Social media is so named because it reaches out and connects with people it has been used to reunite earthquake victims, fight the Iranian government, let the world know when I’m getting a latte, and sadly even tweet a famous author’s personal flight details
~For all the vast changes in technology over the last 100 years, basic human nature probably hasn’t changed that much, just the methods by which they receive their information has
~People still gossip, discuss, have opinions, get hurt by words and actions
So what am I saying? Even us lowly fansite bloggers have our range, let’s not throw all of us out with the proverbial bathwater because without us the fans wouldn’t be congregating the way that they do, connecting with people across the globe, meeting up with friends at conventions, and a million other positive things. Without social media I wouldn’t have ever met four of the people I consider to be my best friends in the world. Thank God for forums, blogs, and for people who take the risk of putting themselves out there to see if anyone else is listening and to comment back. It’s hard work, and the rewards for most of us aren’t ones you can put a price tag on.

Video: Kristen Stewart at the MET Gala
Last night Kristen Stewart was among many stars who attended the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art (AKA the MET) Costume Institute Gala to celebrate the opening of their new exhibit: American Woman:Fashioning a National Identity.
Depending on your angle the dress which was Chanel Haute Couture was either a big hit or a big miss with the fashion critics. Below are some pictures of the dress and a video of her actually walking in it which shows off the effect the bottom of the dress has.
So what do you think, is the dress a hit or a miss?

David Slade In the Future
Last night David Slade posted a series of comments on Twitter about what life would be like in the future. From our perspective it’ sort of a rant where Brave New World meets antagonized director microblogging. See for yourself:
“IN THE FUTURE artificial intelligence google apps will tell us whether we are indeed reading real news or just a blog.
IN THE FUTURE ai [Lexion note: we assume ai means artificial intelligence] apps will be grade online journalism for its accuracy, poignancy, grammar and quality of writing.
IN THE FUTURE online ai grading will lead to the demise of blogging and the new rise of quality journalism.
IN THE FUTURE actors will have tiny GPS trackers positioned all over their skin so they can act in performance capture anywhere they want.
IN THE FUTURE there will be no need for actors.
IN THE FUTURE there will be no need for directors.
IN THE FUTURE there will be no need for you or me. But we will still be here.
IN THE FUTURE painting will still be a dead medium, and people will still paint.
IN THE FUTURE our children will be born more intelligent than we could ever be.
IN THE FUTURE
IN THE FUTURE everyone will be happy all of the time.
IN THE FUTURE everyone will lie to each other each and every minute of the day, and everyone will know.
IN THE FUTURE there will be no context for anything, and nothing will be in context.
IN THE FUTURE there will be no shades of grey, just facts.
IN THE FUTURE no one will know anything, and everything will be subjective and all facts will be true, in every sense.
IN THE FUTURE, the future will be out of fashion.
IN THE FUTURE the future will be in fashion, but just for 15 minutes.
I give you THE FUTURE, and goodnight. DS
100 Monkeys Named A Band to Watch by Rolling Stone
Of the many acts at this years Bamboozle festival, Rolling Stone picked five bands that stood out, and 100 Monkeys made the cut.
“100 Monkeys: This eccentric Cali act have a built-in buzz magnet — bandmember Jackson Rathbone, also known as one of Twilight‘s famous vampires. Their spazzy, energetic Saturday set blended tribal sounds with vocals recalling Jim Morrison’s baritone croon. The “can-this-be-real?” factor ran high thanks to song titles like “The Monkey Song,” lyrics like “free, free, free the beast” and five guys in bandanas jumping around and playing hand drums, trumpet and flute. The band’s latest release, Grape, is out now.”
Congrats to Jackson Rathbone and the entire band!
Official Eclipse Website Updates With Cast Photos
The official Twilight Saga movie website has updated the Eclipse section with various photos. The photos are scattered throughout the site in various montages, but they are also most easily seen in the cast section. Notably missing is a shot of Booboo Stewart, Gil Brimingham, Billy Burke, and Bella’s high school friends. We’ve asked Summit for info on these missing people, we’ll update you when we have an answer.
The photos are not as heavily stylized as they were for New Moon. For example the wolfpack doesn’t look like they stopped off for spray tans. Also Alex Meraz, Chaske Spencer, and Bronson Pelletier look much more like themselves than they did in the New Moon group shots where Alex in particular looked very different.
Jackson Rathbone’s hair continues to morph yet again to another style. It’s decidedly less poofy than the previous films and a warmer shade of blonde. speaking of hair, we really liked the photo of Dan Cudmore. The weird combover thing from New Moon has changed.
So which star’s look is your favorite?
Chaske Spencer Creates Hostess Cupcake Art
Chaske Spencer, along with other celebrities, has created art based on the iconic Hostess cupcake. It’s all going up for auction to benefit children in need in the New York City area.
“A drum set made of cupcakes. A cupcake moon shining its squiggles on the Las Vegas desert. A cupcake enveloped in a valentine made of lentils. All of the above are among the original artworks created by celebrities including Rosie O’Donnell, Padma Lashkmi (Top Chef), Chelsea Handler, Chaske Spencer (Twilight), Jordin Sparks (American Idol) and Kelly Rutherford (Gossip Girl), among others, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the iconic squiggle on Hostess CupCakes and benefit Free Arts NYC, an organization dedicated to providing educational and arts programs to under-served children.
Hostess is hoping these celebrity squiggles inspire cupcake lovers across America to submit their own original artwork featuring the famous squiggle in a way that reflects their own personal heritage, experience and personality. Five winning “portraits” from among public submissions will be chosen to be painted on Hostess delivery trucks across the country. Winners will also receive a $1,000 cash prize.”
You can find items done by the other celebrities here. We know we are biased, but we really think Chaske’s is the most creative.
