NPR: Team Bella or Team Lisbeth

twilight-booksNPR examines the rising role of of the female protagonist driving megafranchises in print and on screen.

“If you look at the most successful pop franchises over the past 50 years — from James Bond to Star Wars to Harry Potter — one thing is obvious: They’re dominated by men. Which makes it all the more remarkable that right now there are two cultural juggernauts centering on women — the Twilight series, created by Stephenie Meyer, and Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy, featuring The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Together the novels have sold tens of millions of copies, while the screen adaptations are raking in dollars by the hundreds of millions.

To be honest, neither Meyer nor Larsson is a great writer. But their legions of fans don’t care. That’s because Twilight and Millennium offer something readers often like better than literary merit — primal fantasies. And what’s interesting is that these two fantasies are almost diametrically opposed, not least in their image of women.”

I guess Jennifer doesn’t fully appreciate the Team Jacob or Taylor appeal.

Hit Fix: Billy Burke Talks Drive Angry and Twilight

Billy Burke is hitting Comic Con later this month to promote Drive Angry (also incidentally a Summit Entertainment Picture). It’s a total departure from Twilight, very dark rated R movie with Nicholas Cage. The nails he mentions in the article are in the photo that Billy Tweeted a few months back.

“There have been a number of supporting players in “The Twilight Saga” who have been able to use their newfound notoriety into bigger roles but none who have deserved the chance more than Billy Burke.  Better known as Bella’s dad Charlie Swan, Burke has been working in Hollywood for almost 20 years with small roles in films such as “Fracture,” “Ladder 49,” “Along Came A Spider” and TV series roles on TV series such as “Gilmore Girls,” “My Boys” and “24.”  Now, he’s getting his most significant break yet as a conniving and evil cult leader in the supernatural action thriller “Drive Angry 3D.”

Visiting the set of “Angry” in Shreveport, Louisiana a few months ago, Burke was the center of a massive action scene between his character and a vengeful father from hell played by none other than Nicolas Cage.  Burke took some time off from his shooting schedule to sit down and talk to the assembled press on a very warm May night.  He was as candid and classy as you’d expect for a longtime Hollywood veteran.”

Huffington Post: Christian Serratos Interview

Looks like it’s Twilight week over at the Huffinton Post, first they there was an amazing article on why the books and movies mean so much to people, and now there is this look at Christian Serratos.

“As the ardor cools for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, it’s easy to forget all the humans except that most desired one — Kristen Stewart’s Bella. But there are the others, from the ever-surging actor Anna Kendrick as head geek Jessica to Billy Burke as poppa Swan.

And then there’s actress Christian Serratos’s bespectacled Angela Webber, who kind of reflects the film’s own core girl-geek squad.

After the 20-year-old Serratos made it into The Twilight Saga, she started to tour the con circuit making sure that the humans other than Bella weren’t forgotten. So she made it to New York last October, to Anaheim this April and has had time to bare all for PETA. And her few moments of screen time in the installments reveals real flashes of talent — part of what she discusses in this exclusive interview conducted during one of those con excursions.

Though she has limited screen time again in the third installment, she does have this incredible ringside seat to see this Virgin-Vamp saga emerge and see how everyone has evolved in doing it. As close up to the center of the media circus as anyone, Serratos has not only witnessed the Twilight phenomenon from the inside out, she has felt the glare of that white hot spotlight that Kris Stewart and Rob Pattinson have been subjected to throughout.”
