MTV’s Movie Brawl: Vote Breaking Dawn Part 2

MtvlogoMTV has a new poll going called Movie Brawl. Here’s how it works according to MTV:

Vote for the films you’re most excited to see in 2012 from our list of 32 movies. You’ll be able to fight for your movie of choice in this play-in round until voting closes on Sunday (January 8). Starting next week, we’ll be down to 16 movies. That’s when our bracket launches and the 16 flicks will start going head-to-head, March Madness-style, in single-elimination contests — until only one movie reigns supreme.

So head over to MTV where there are a ton of films listed! Vote here.

Alex Patsavas Talks How to Get the Right Soundtrack Song

Alex Patsavas Talks about breaking into the music business and what she has learned from the Twilight Saga.

Have you experienced much Twilight mania first hand?

Yes, I have been to quite a few of the pre-release events over the years, especially if soundtrack artists are involved. It is a privilege to work on a project with a positive and enthusiastic fan base.

What were some of the trials and tribulations of putting the latest Twilight soundtrack together?

Only the masses of excellent (and unreleased) submissions we get at the Chop Shop offices for each film. Scores of truly memorable tracks and only 15-20 places in the movie. It was really wonderful working with Bill Condon – I am eagerly awaiting Breaking Dawn 2.

What have you learned from the success of Twilight over the years?

We tend to select a mix of established and respected alternative artists and performers that are less known but always the song that is selected is the best to tell the story. I do believe that is why these OST’s connect so strongly with the audience. They are hearing the songs for the first time, certainly and often are experiencing the bands for the first time as they watch the film. Heady stuff.

Wal-mart Breaking Dawn Sweepstakes And How to Enter Without a Purchase!

So far out of the retailers Wal-mart is offering US fans the chance to win a trip to the US premiere, a trip to Australia(We love our Aussie fans, but we have no idea why Australia or what Australia has to do with Twilight), or a Bella’s Bracelet. After you pre-order your DVD you are emailed a special code within 72 hours. You then visit this site breakingdawnpremieresweepstakes, enter your code, and you are entered in the sweepstakes for the possible chance of winning the above prizes.

Now if you read the fine print on Walmart’s main site, you can discover that you don’t have to purchase anything to enter. (Thumbs up to US sweepstakes laws!)

After some clicking around the official rules(bottom of page scroll down), here is what we discovered: “D. FREE CODE REQUEST: To request a free Code via email, send an email during the Entry Period to [email protected] (“Code Request”). Sponsor is not responsible for lost, late, damaged, misdirected, illegible, or human error that may occur in the receipt or processing of such requests. Receipt of Code Requests will not be confirmed.” It’s ONE CODE (Either free or via preorder) per person. So don’t try to enter it a million times because they will void your entries! They further state:

A. Any attempt by any Entrant or any other person to obtain more than the stated number of Entries by using multiple/different email addresses, identities, registrations, and logins or using any other methods will void that person’s Entries, and such person may be disqualified by Sponsor in its sole discretion. Automated means of entry and Entries by any means which subvert the entry process are prohibited, and all such Entries will be void.

B. There is a limit of one (1) Entry per person and per email address during the Entry Period.

We also discovered that when we were reading the official rules, they mention Target. So, it’s possible that Target may also be promoting this contest or something similar at some point.

EDITED: We sent an email to summit regarding the email for the free code not working. As soon as we have more info we’ll let you know. Not sure if the error is on their end, a third-party vendor, or Wal-marts.

Edit 2: Just heard back from our usual Summit contact. It’s not their area, but they have forwarded our info regarding the problem to the guys in their home entertainment division who are involved in this area and they are looking into this right now.

Edit 3: The Summit guys worked on the problem yesterday and it is now supposedly fixed. I tried to send away for the code and so far the email has gone through (yesterday’s attempt bounced back almost immediately). So now. I’m just waiting for the code itself. Since the purchase interface for the code says it could take up to 72 hours, I’ll report back if I have my code by then.

Edit 4: I received my code via email roughly an hour after applying, well within the 72 hour time cited on their website.

They are also working on a portal that lists the retailers and takes you right to their preorder screens (Note Target is not listed yet and they have the DVD version that includes movie flowers.)

From what we can tell, and we will update if this changes, the content on the DVD will be the same, but the packaging extras is where the differences lie. So far the two retailers with packaging specialties are Walmart and Target. Check out yesterday’s post to see what those extras are.

Breaking Dawn DVD’s Available for Pre-Order

Wal-mart and Target may have jumped the gun a little if only for the fact that we don’t have an official press release and the Target ordering info seems to have come down, but this is what we know:

Walmart and Target will both have an exclusive DVD that has unique packaging. Wal-mart will have a wedding dress motif DVD with a specialty photo and Target’s will feature prop flowers from the wedding. Wal-mart’s wedding dress option will sell for $22.96, they will also have a generic version for $19.96.

Wal-mart is currently citing a 2/11 ship date which would concur with the info that Hypable had about a month ago that Summit was targeting a Valentine’s Day release tie-in. It’s an interesting move in that it will take the movie out of theaters a solid month earlier than usual. One the other hand, once you’ve made 270 million in the domestic market it’s hard to argue that it needs to be in theaters longer.

The High Def Digest is also citing a combo pack “Specs and supplements have yet to be revealed for the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, but suggested list price is $33.99.”

Check out the product comparisons on Hypable. They items seem pretty similar on the content side. It’s the packaging and bonus materials like photos and flowers where there seem to be substantial differences.

Behind the Scenes With Breaking Dawn Visual Effects

Remember back when Bill Condon said there were more green screen shots in Breaking Dawn than in Avatar? Here’s a look at why. I have to say on some of the shots I never would have guessed that a green screen was in play.

600 shots in 3 months is pretty impressive. How did you do that?

George Macri – VFX Producer // We had a solid team of artists with clearly defined tasks that were tracked by the Production Management team on a daily basis.

Have you created some automatic procedure to key and composite the backgrounds?
George Macri – VFX Producer // Everything was done using Nuke’s built-in keyers.

What was the biggest challenge on this project and how did you achieve it?
Jeff Campbell – VFX Supervisor // Estimating the spatial relationships and distances of objects and actors to the glass in the windows.

Eric Doiron – Compositing Supervisor // Those expansive outdoor views were entirely green screen comps. The real challenge was getting the reflections right. We often cheated the reflections because sometimes what was physically correct didn’t always work best for the composition.

Check out more on Art of VFX It can be a little technical, but the pictures are amazing. Well worth the read!

Breaking Dawn 2 Makes E!’s 2012 Movies to Get Excited About

Here’s what E! had to say about Breaking Dawn 2:

How’s vampire “life” treating Bella? How’s the Volturi treating the Cullens? Oh, like you haven’t already read the book. The only thing you don’t know is how hard it’s going to be to watch the last scene of the last Twilight.

E! also gave a shout out to Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart.

Summit Merger Talks Heat Up Again

Variety is bringing up the merger talks regarding Summit entertainment with either Lionsgate or Miramax owner, Colony Capital. Again, we’re not sure where all of this is leading.

If either the Lionsgate or Colony deals go through, Friedman and Wachsberger are expected to remain in some kind of top-level exec capacities in the merged entity. Summit and Lionsgate have had discussions about uniting going back as far as the fall of 2008, just before the bow of the first “Twilight” pic. Colony, which completed a $663 million buyout of Miramax from Disney in December 2010, emerged as a possible Summit bidder in November.

Both deals would bolster the new Summit’s ability to operate as a minimajor. Lionsgate and Miramax possess significant libraries and the merged entity would have more firepower in a marketplace where the major have scaled back the production of mid-budget films in favor of tentpole and franchise properties — creating an opportunity for sizable indies to fill that gap.

Summit has shown that it can exploit a franchise in “Twilight” while Lionsgate’s in the midst of starting its own tentpole property with the four-picture “The Hunger Games” franchise. The first “Games” opens March 23 and the trailer has been attached to “Breaking Dawn — Part 1.”

So what does this mean for Twilight fans? In short we don’t know. Will there be the same fan experiences? Are Comic Con on the easier access Thursday, tent cities, concerts, cast appearances in the mix if there is new management? Will fansites have interview access with phoners, press conference access, and red carpet access? A lot of this will depend on who is retained in a merger, whose vision leads the marketing and PR division, and who has the ultimate sign off.

So like we’ve said before, about the only thing we can state right now is that it’s going to make life around here interesting!
