Brand New Forks High School Opens for Students

Remember how we told you that the original building of Forks High School was going to be torn down due to wear and tear on the building. The principal had told us back in 2009 how they had to start heating the building at 3:00 am just to get it to 50 degrees by the time students arrived, and that they had trouble even getting it to 60 degrees. Students were wearing coats in class all winter, obviously not an ideal situation.

As with most construction, they looked at remodeling and rapidly discovered it was most economical to knock down and rebuild rather than to renovate. Initially they were going to keep the entire building facade, but that too proved impractical and outrageously expensive. So what the came up with was keeping some of the main entrance, incorporating it into the new entrance hallway, and selling former bricks as a fundraiser.

The Forks Forum was there for the grand reopening when school came back into session last week and this is what they reported:

For the first time in about 20 years all of Forks High School’s students are attending class under one roof. After years of planning and bond fund raising, followed by months of construction, the new Forks High School Addition opened to students and staff as scheduled on Tuesday morning, Jan. 3. Students mixed in the hall with construction workers from Primo Construction who are putting the finishing touches on the project.(new main entrance pictured above)

Terra cotta and brick elements from the entrance to the the original brick Forks High School building are now part of the interior wall entrance to Forks High School. In coming months a display of memorabilia from each decade of the high school’s history dating back to the 1920s will go on display in the hall leading into the entrance, an area to be called Heritage Hall. Just a brief plug for the school. If you are going to be buying Forks HS Spartan’s gear, please buy it right from the school rather than other vendors. This way the activities fund at the school gets the money and their students directly benefit!

Chris Weitz Talks Working With Younger Performers

chris-weitz-new-moonChris Weitz talked to Variety about working with younger and less experienced actors. This certainly came into play on his most recent film A Better Life and on New Moon.

Casting a young actor amounts to more than just selecting one person to fill one role, according to director Chris Weitz.

“It’s important to me that I meet the family before we hit the set, so that they know enough about me to trust me,” he says. “What they’re really doing is giving over a chunk of their kid’s life.”

With credits that include “About a Boy” in 2002, Weitz has found success casting newcomers. The most recent addition was Julian as the teenage son of a Mexican gardener in the U.S. illegally in “A Better Life.”

While he considers casting a first-timer as “taking a leap into the unknown,” the risk, he says, is worth it.

“You know you’re going to get a certain fresh and unstudied quality rather than someone who has been influenced by the world of TV, which is really where a lot of kid actors get their first break,” Weitz says.

Carolina Herrera Explains The Details of Bella’s Wedding Dress

The new issue of Town & Country Weddings has an interview with Carolina Herrera, the designer that created Bella’s wedding dress. People has a preview of the story.  In the interview Herrera reveals what happened when Kristen Stewart first put on the gown.

“We did three fittings. When she initially put on the dress and looked over her shoulder into the mirror, she was very moved,” Herrera tells the mag, on stands Wednesday. “In that moment she was not an actress or a character in a film but instead a bride, and a happy one at that.”

She also talks about the design of the dress.

“I took into consideration the character of Bella and Kristen’s portrayal of her, and what this fantasy character would choose to wear for the most important day of her life,” she explained. “It’s made of a crepe satin with two inserts on the front and beautiful silk thread topstitching. The neckline is a slight V, just enough to see the collarbones. The back is oval-shaped, with a Chantilly lace border veiled in tulle. It’s very romantic, and when all the details come together, it creates a vision specific to Bella’s style and personality.”

If you’d like to wear the dress for your own wedding, it won’t come cheaply! Herrera will hand make all the gowns that will go on sale. According to People, the estimated price of each dress will be $35,000!

Summit/Lionsgate Closing In On Deal

For those of your who have been following the coverage of the merger of Lionsgate and Summit, a final deal may be close at hand. The Hollywood Reporter states the following:

Two sources confirm that Lionsgate is closing in on an agreement to acquire Summit Entertainment for about $400 million in cash plus the assumption of debt. The sources say the deal also includes the services Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger, the two top executives behind the studio that has ridden the Twilight movie franchise to the top ranks of Hollywood.

Sources also say that Lionsgate is very interested in bringing in Friedman and Wachsberger, the two leaders who helped propel Summit from an indie that was losing money to one of the most profitable studios in Hollywood. Since both companies have movie production and international sales units, it is unclear how they will be merged, but keeping key people in place does appear to be the intent.

As soon as we hear anything definitive, we will let everyone know! Read the whole story at The Hollywood Reporter.

Breaking Dawn Sweepstakes Code Now Working

Yesterday we reported on a contest being run by Wal-mart and Summit to coincide with the DVD release of Breaking Dawn. There are several prizes including a trip to the Breaking Dawn 2 Premiere and a trip to Australia.

Now thanks to my high school Business Law teacher (sadly I can’t remember her name, but shout out to my alma mater OLMA in Syosset) I remembered that if you are running a sweepstake there is the all important “no purchase is necessary” clause. Whoever is running the contest has to give you a way to enter that doesn’t involve having to buy something.

Anyway, I scoped out where that info was, and I posted about it. It turned out there was a glitch. The email to obtain the free code wasn’t working. So long story short, we called Summit, they forwarded the problem and our weblink with your comments explaining what was wrong to the tech division of the company supervising the contest, and it is now fixed.

So go here to get your information on entering the contest.
