SPOILERS: Stephenie Meyer Address Breaking Dawn 2 Battle Questions
Stephenie Meyer updated her website with some information about the final battle scene in Breaking Dawn Part 2.
Warning! Spoilers!
I’m not kidding!
Don’t read on if you haven’t seen the film, please!
First, Stephenie talks about the fact that Aro actually does see a “battle” in his head as he looks at Bella. This is the justification and the reason why the battle scene works for her and doesn’t “change” the story as she saw it. Here is what she said:
The question, which I got frequently, was how I felt about having a big change inserted into the story during the final climax. My answer was that it didn’t feel like such a huge departure. For me, this moment is already in the book. However, we don’t get to see it in all its exciting and gory detail because we are seeing the world only through Bella’s eyes. A few of the reporters I talked to wanted to know where in the book this moment was hidden. The answer is page 738, fourth paragraph down:
“Aro stared into my eyes for a long, tense moment. I had no idea what he was searching for, or what he found, but after he had measured me for that moment, something in his face changed, a faint shift in the set of his mouth and eyes, and I knew that Aro had made his decision.”
In this short analysis, after Bella has revealed the depth of her power, Aro plays out in his head the probable outcome of a battle with the Cullens. Much like what we see in the movie, Aro foresees a more evenly matched fight than he had expected, the loss of too many of his key players, and—most unacceptable—the likelihood of his own death. Though odds are that the Volturi would have come out on top in the end, Aro wouldn’t have lived to see it and the unassailable nature of the Volturi’s authority would have been broken, possibly forever. It is this vision of the future—though imperfect guesswork on his part—that motivates his retreat.
In case it’s been a while since you’ve read the book, the moment Stephenie is referring to is on page 738 of the hard back version. Also, Edward explains it in detail, having read Aro’s mind. You can read his explanation on pages 744-745. So it is there, as Stephenie said.
The other issue that has had fans in a quandary is that Alice has said she can’t see the wolves or Renesmee in the future. So then, how did she see that big battle in the first place? We attempted to answer the question to make it fit into Stephenie’s mythology to a point. But here is what Steph said:
Are there a few little trespasses against the mythology in this vision? Yes, as some of you have pointed out. The consensus was that a minor deviation from what had been established was forgivable in the name of entertainment. I had a few very elaborate solutions, but they were too confusing and not nearly as cinematic as the final product. And obviously, the result was very entertaining.
Stephenie also lets us in on a little secret… she would have done the ending differently! She would have killed MORE Cullens! I’m not sure if the fandom could have taken it, she states that killed off Edward would have made the battle and obvious unreal vision.
The post ends with a thank you to the fans:
It was really something to get to spend a little time with the fans at the BD2 events, and to watch the movie at the premiere with so many of them. It was the best experience I’ve ever had at a Twilight movie, and a perfect conclusion to my personal Twilight experience. I hope you also enjoyed the movie, and each other, for this last big bang. You, the readers and viewers, are the ones who have made this whole ten-year experience into something unbelievable and amazing, and I thank you so much for it. I hope I get to see some of you again in March (shameless The Host plug), because it makes me too sad to think that my relationship with my readers is ending, too.
So what do you think? Did this clear up anything? Can you live with her explanation that they let the mythology go for a moment for a better cinematic effect? And are you going to follow her to her next big movie, The Host? Leave us a comment!

Bill Condon’s Thank You to the Fans!
The Official Twilight Saga Facebook Page pasted a thank you letter and picture from Bill Condon. Here is what he had to say to the fans.
On the flight now from Madrid to Berlin, I wanted to check in one last time, as you’re finally getting a look at what we’ve all been working on so intensely. It’s hard to believe that after our Berlin premiere tonight, my TWILIGHT journey will finally come to a close. It’s been almost three years since I first wrote to you. I’m very proud of what we’ve created together since then, and I hope that PART II fulfills your expectations for the grand finale to Stephenie’s sprawling saga. Fingers crossed that you’ve also managed to stay at least mostly spoiler-free, in order to enjoy the twists and parting gifts we have in store for you…
Thank you again for making me feel like a member of your fandom family online…for sleeping in The Line in San Diego in order to laugh with us in Hall H…for traveling great distances to join us in L.A. for last year’s Tent City and this year’s Fan Camp. Above all, thank you for trusting me with this universe you care so deeply about – we tried to match your intensity in our attention to every detail. That said, I don’t think I’ll ever live down the shame of being spied on by Twihard covens around the world on our very first night of shooting in Rio. Thanks to photos shot and instantly posted online of Bella and Edward on their honeymoon, we were called out in real time for missing a certain engagement ring… (Sorry — again!)
As with you all, what I’ll take with me from my time in Forks are so many great friendships – our massive cast of talented actors, and new creative partners such as Melissa Rosenberg, Guillermo Navarro and Phil Tippett. I hope to know them all for years and to work with them again soon, making movies yet to be dreamed up. At the L.A. premiere Monday night, Phil said we should make a “bloody, giant monster movie.” But is there room for a musical number?
See you at the theatre.
Forever,
Bill
I think I speak for the entire fandom when I say… No, no, Mr. Condon. THANK YOU!

Twilight Shopping Guide for Black Friday
If you’re looking for some great gifts for yourself or for the Twilight fan in your home, we have a list of gift possibilities for Black Friday.
Hot Topic’s t-shirts are $10 today! They have several Breaking Dawn related Tees. We’ve had e-mails from various fans that they are having difficulty finding the shirts in the Hot Topic stores. Try shopping on line given that the shirts are discounted today! Hot Topic also sells some of the replica jewelry from the films. Here’s Renesmee’s bracelet that Jacob gave to her at Christmas.
If you’re looking for something new to read, try The Twilight Saga: The Complete Film Archive. The book is like a scrap book with all kids of little pieces to pull out and look at. There are bits of scripts and character sketches as well as photos from premieres! You might find yourself in the book! It’s hard back, so it will be sure to last. I’ve see a lot of Twilight Books in my day and this one really surprised me with how detailed and comprehensive it was. And it was just fun to open up all the little envelopes and see what surprises were inside! It’s running at $19.99 on Amazon today.
Cafe Press has a whole Breaking Dawn Part 2 Shop where you can find shirts, bags, iPhone cases, and so much more! Most of their items are on sale today. If you are looking for something a little different, then Cafe Press probably has it. Most of these items are fan created, so they tends to be a little more original than what you will find in a department store. If you’ve ever won a tote bag from the Lexicon, chances are it was a Cafe Press bag. The design below is one I found from the front page of the Twilight store and features Twilight memories in general. It would a great gift for the fan who has done it all!
Before there was even a hint at a viable movie, Infinite Jewelry was producing the Bella’s Bracelet ™ and Bella’s Engagement Ring®. The engagement ring comes in yellow gold (just like the book description) and also white gold. There are various versions of the ring ranging from a fashion edition all the way to a fine (real gold) and genuine (real gold and real diamonds) editions. There are other versions of these products by other vendors, but we personally like this one better. One, the ring is more subtle than the version from the movie which we feel practically swallows your whole knuckle. Two, the wolf carving on the bracelet is the most intricate we’ve, seen and was done by consulting with Stephenie Meyer. In our opinion, it’s hard to go wrong when Stephenie consulted on the design.
If you have a doll collector in your house and want to give an amazing gift, try a doll from Tonner Dolls. They have several in their Twilight collection including Bella in her Wedding Dress. This particular doll runs for $199, but Tonner Dolls are known to increase in value once the items are sold out.
If your doll collector wants something in a more affordable price range, there is always Barbie! The wedding day Bella is sold out according to Barbie’s official site. But I did see one in Target the other day, so if you want one, you best buy one now! They do have some dolls that I’ve never seen in the store though. How about Esme or Carlisle? And they have a vampire Bella and Edward set listed a s”coming soon.”
Happy Thanksgiving Twilight Style
