It takes roughly two weeks from date of release for a book to be eligible for the New York Times Bestseller list. Less than ten years ago there were only 4 lists hardcover/softcover and fiction/non-fiction. They split the lists since then into many, many subcategories. The reason for the split was that the Harry Potter books took over the top three spots for a solid three years producing…shall we say…discontent, among other authors and publishers that “a mere children’s book” was robbing them of their rightful place.
The result was the splitting of the list. A byproduct of this split, in our opinion, was why the Twilight Saga novels didn’t catch the media attention as quickly. They were relegated to a sub-category in the children’s books division. Had the list still been in the old style, starting with the release of New Moon, the Twilight novels would have clogged the list the way Harry Potter had. We base this theory on the fact that the novels ruled the top positions on the USA Today and Wall Street Journal lists which rank the way the New York Times used to; that is to say lumping everyone in together.
So where is all this fascinating history of the bestseller lists going you may ask? The graphic novel will be on the New York Times best seller list next week. It’s sales are the highest ever recorded for a graphic novel. The book debuted in the number 6 position on the USA Today list the first week it was eligible (Quite an accomplishment since graphic novels are not really everybody’s thing.)
It looks like Gus Van Sant, Sofia Coppola, and Bill Condon have some company. The LA Times is reporting that Stephen Daldry, director of the Academy Award Winning, The Reader, The Hours, and Billy Elliott is in the Breaking Dawn hunt.
“Having already gone indie with Catherine Hardwicke, polished/commercial with Chris Weitz and genre auteur with David Slade for the franchise’s first three movies, Summit clearly wants a high-end Oscar- prestige filmmaker to handle the fourth picture.
Still, even by those standards, Daldry stands out. He’s been nominated for three Oscars, more than any of the other directors on the short list. In fact, Daldry is the rare filmmaker who’s been nominated for a best directing Oscar for every feature he’s made.
Those credentials make taking on a global teen phenomenon seem unlikely, though there are reasons to think it could work. The director is well-versed in depicting forbidden love (a “Twilight” staple) with “The Reader” and “The Hours.” And he’s adept at themes of family alienation, also a franchise fixture, which ran under “Billy Elliot.” Also, like most of the others, Daldry doesn’t yet have a new film.”

At both of the Madame Tussauds Wax Museums (London and New York) Robert Pattinson’s wax figure will be unveiled today.
The new Fox series, Sons of Tucson, featured Twilight in their most recent episode. There is an entire running bit as one of the three boys is reading the book featuring lines like”
“These vampires are a lot more morally complex than I would have thought.”
“Don’t go to prom with him, Bella. I know he’s hunky and handsome, but he’ll eat you alive!”
