Water For Elephant’s Extras Casting, and Expectations

robOKbaftaWell it looks like we called it when last week we said that producers for Waters for Elephants, staring Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon among others, were going to get more than they bargained for by putting out an extras casting notice on Craig’s List. Between the Pattinson craze and the fact that a lot of people don’t read the fine details, well things aren’t quite going to plan.

According to the Water for Elephant’s site as pointed out to us by MTV’s Hollywood Crush:

“Earlier in the week WaterforElephantsfilm.com broke the news that Water for Elephants was holding an open casting call for Extras to appear in the film.  Well, at first sites like Mtv.com were posting the correct details (Robert Pattinson’s ‘Water For Elephants’ Is Looking For Extras!) but before  we knew it we were seeing  headlines such as these in our email in-boxes:

Want to be on screen with Robert Pattinson?

Want to star in a movie with Robert Pattinson?

How To Star Opposite Robert Pattinson

I think that many of these attention getting headlines were just that, meant to catch your attention as opposed to disseminate misinformation, but it has created some serious confusion.

The majority of the stories out there seem to be accurate, however to clarify things, click here to see the casting information directly from the Casting Agency. The casting is for non-speaking extras and background performers. This is NOT an open casting call for speaking roles.”

The site then goes on to explain what typically happens when you are an extra, and what your expectations should be as your arrive. So if you fit the types that they are looking for, break-a-leg! If you’re not what they are looking for we would personally recommend that you not go down because it will probably only antagonize the organizers of the call, and that’s never a good thing.

MTV: Robert Pattinison Film Needs Extras

robRemcarpetAccording to AMTV’s Hollywood Crush:

“Want to be seen in an upcoming Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon flick? Producers of “Water for Elephants” (which will also star recent-Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz) posted an ad this morning on Craigslist in Los Angeles seeking extras of various types for the film, which currently in pre-production. If you’re in L.A. and available for the casting on April 17th, this could be your chance at cinematic glory!”

Catch all the details here.

Some how we doubt these producers know what they are getting themselves into by posting this, but hey, their choice.

Ashley Greene and Robert Pattinson Casting Rumors

ashleyGreene-red carpetThe Hollywood Reporter (which we find credible) is stating that Ashley Greene will star in the new film Butter.

““Twilight” regular Ashley Greene has joined the Weinstein Co. comedy “Butter.”

Jennifer Garner is producing and starring in the film, based on the Black List screenplay written by newcomer Jason Micallef. Alissa Phillips and Mike De Luca are also producing the project, which director Jim Field Smith (“She’s Out of My League”) will begin filming next week in Louisiana.

“Butter” follows a number of competitive characters in a small Midwestern town as they become entwined in an annual butter-carving contest. Greene will play a rebellious high school teenager named Kaitlen Pickler. (Do I smell a sequel built around anaerobic fermentation?)”

Read the rest on The Hollywood Reporter.

The UK Tabloid The Sun is reporting that Robert Pattinson will play Kurt Cobain in a biopic. Though a lot of media is picking up on this story, we are not finding it credible as The Sun notoriously has information such as this wrong. Only last week they were reporting that David Walliams from Little Britain was supposed to audition when no director has signed on the dotted line yet for casting to even begin.

Robert Pattinson: Metro Interview

robert-pattinson-remember-me_aThe UK’s Metro talked to Robert Pattinson about Remember Me and his choice of roles:

“I never like anything, so it’s quite easy to decide what to do – I’ve never felt any pressure to do anything, particularly. Even when we were shooting it [Remember Me] I never thought about the box office…But this one, the way the dialogue was written, it just seemed much more naturalistic than most things. It’s not really a feel-good movie. They don’t make movies like it anymore, I think that’s how I kind of choose stuff, that’s the only criteria I have. There seems to be a gap in the market for something and I just try and do that.””

Twilight Fans Only Want to See Stars in Twilight Films

edbellabedThis frankly seemed a bit of a leap to us, that Twilight fans only want to see Twilight stars in Twilight related movies.  The LA Times is claiming that “poor box office” returns on The Runaways and Remember Me are indicative of that. However are those box office returns truly poor? They are both independent movies, not mega-franchise or big studio pieces. For that matter, The Runaways isn’t even in wide release yet.

The only Twilight star who is attached to anything like that in the near future is Jackson Rathbone in The Last Airbender, and that doesn’t come out until after Eclipse.  Valentine’s Day, a Gary Marshall big studio piece, with Taylor Lautner is currently the number three picture  of the year. Adventureland was a coming of age indie film (dime a dozen) and Little Ashes (Dali or no Dali  likeness) that bizarre caricature and bad reviews scared a lot of people off.

Don’t get us wrong, we love indie films, but not everyone does. It’s not a unique phenomena related to Twilight. Right now that is what the cast has booked. The better acid test will be Kellan Lutz in War of the Gods and Jackson Rathbone in Airbender.

According to the LA Times

“But there may be a deeper lesson here about Stewart: For all her acting versatility, when she strays from her “Twilight” wheelhouse, the fans don’t roll with her. That was, after all, also the message some experts gleaned from her first post-“Twilight” movie, “Adventureland,” which grossed just $16 million domestically despite getting some marketing play as a Stewart vehicle (and not three months after “Twilight” blew off the box-office doors). It’s a lesson that’s especially pointed with “Runaways” because Stewart, in inhabiting the role of Joan Jett, is in many ways picking up where Bella Swan left off. She’s playing the moody rebel in both, yet fans apparently only want to see her playing a certain kind of moody rebel.”

We think it’s rather insulting to Twilight fans to say that no one wants to see them in anything else. Was the same true of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings? In each of those incredibly successful series there were stars that rose to the next level and others who have wallowed in obscurity(self-imposed or otherwise).

To us what it comes down to is we want to see them in a good movie. If it comes down to plunking down money at the theater the whole story has to look like something we want to see, otherwise it’s a Netflix wait.

So what do you think of the LA Times story?
