Twilight Lexicon: Michael Welch Interview

There’s a story behind this one. A couple of months back we asked Mike for an interview, but then he got busy (landed two indie movies, kudos to Mike), we got busy, and we figured it was one of those things that just didn’t work out, no big deal.

So last Saturday we are at Creation Entertainment’s Official Twilight Tour in Chicago and we are on line to get some autographs from Mike. We chat with Mike as he’s signing some items for our movie event giveaways and then we walk away from the table saying thanks.

So, the next thing we know Mike gets up from behind the table, flags us down, and says, “Hey wait, don’t I owe you guys an interview?” We told him not to worry about it, and were flattered that he remembered, but he said, “No, no I owe you guys. How about we do it later tonight?”

So long story short we quickly dug up our interview questions, and thanks to Creation allowing us to use their green room we were able to interview Mike. Now you have to understand that we interviewed him about 5 minutes after he had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand doing this, and he had to be exhausted.

We hope you enjoy the interview as much as we enjoyed doing it. The whole story, in our opinion, shows how dedicated Mike is to fans.

Mike Welch Does Barracuda

Mike Welch does these what he terms “Jim Carey meets Jack Black” lip sync /karaoke comedy routines. We’ve seen him do Bohemian Rhapsody and I’m Telling You from Dreamgirls where we were laughing so hard we couldn’t breathe. He added Barracuda to his repertoire this past weekend at Chicago’s Official Twilight Tour.

Note the film is intended for mature audiences. It wasn’t been rated by the MPAA, but if it were it would be an R rating (we assume) so use your judgement.

Win Michael Welch’s Photo

Michael Welch has a true gift for comedy. If you’ve ever seen him at a convention singing falsetto, or in the ACZone online musical spoof you know what we mean.

If you want to win an autographed photo of Mike there is an ongoing contest. Check it out here.

While you’re at it, check out the whole ACZone thing for a good tongue-in-cheek laugh!

Twilight Actors Go Indie

A number of Twilight actors are involved in, or about to be involved in, what you could term lower budget indie films. They are the type of thing you see at film festivals. If an indie film is really lucky and garners enough attention it’s possible for it to reach Blair Witch Project or Napoleon Dynamite recognition.

Mike Welch is currently shooting Unrequited in Kentucky.  A recent set visit by the Lexington Herald Leader resulted in some fabulous behind the scenes images.

Get all the images here.  What’s also great about indie films is, that unlike major studio productions, they have grasped the power of  social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. The Unrequited crew Tweets daily with updates from the silly to the mundane.

In fact, their most recent Tweet was really good news: “Contacted today by our first distributor inquery. Pretty exciting that word about this film is getting around.”

Check them out on Twitter here.

Jackson Rathbone is involved in more ways than one in the upcoming flick called Girlfriend. We first heard about the project when we interviewed 100 Monkeys in Allentown, PA. 100 Monkeys will be doing the soundtrack. Jackson is  starring as well as producing. 100 Monkeys bandmate Jerad Anderson is also wearing the producer hat.

Jackson tells MTV’s Hollywood Crush(click here), “I’m actually producing my first film this year called ‘Girlfriend,’” he says. “New director Justin Lerner kind of made a splash at a couple festivals last year with a short film he did…It’s an exciting time,” he said. “I get to play a part in it and have a little bit more say behind the scenes, behind the camera, which is really interesting. It’s what I’ve always really wanted to get into. I love film. I love the art behind it.”

Now the good news is that the group has just set up a Twitter and is about to launch a facebook page (we’ll let you know when that happens.) Directors, producers, actors, etc will all be doing the on set tweets. One of the latest was teasing about info regarding who the co-star, AKA the girlfriend, is going to be:

“We’ve finally decided what actress will play Jackson Rathbone’s “Girlfriend” in our film. The lucky mystery girl will be announced soon!”

You really want to be following this group on Twitter because you never know when they might give out something special to a follower. Right now they have 489 followers. With Jackson Rathebone promised as one of the Tweeters surely that number will go up. So, sign up here to follow along!

Mike Welch in ACZone

So, even with the press release we aren’t quite sure we understand this whole thing, but here goes:

Near as we can figure it’s the acne product ACZone putting on a web musical starring Mike Welch and others that is a send up of HS Musical, Spring Awakening, etc. Read the press release yourself, maybe you can figure it out better than we can.

Anyway, check out the videos here. Mike appears in the main segment and in the “news flash” section that appears to the left. He sort of does the Twilight dance in the first video.

Mike Welch: Unrequited Early Footage

Mike Welch is busy filming Unrequited the debut movie of  Jason Epperson who finished as first runner-up in the On The Lot competition run by Steven Speilberg and mark Burnett.

Mike plays the lead in the movie that is described as a, “Psychological thriller UNREQUITED tells the story of Ben Jacobs, a troubled young man who, on his 18th birthday, must leave the group home for “troubled teens” where he has been living for the past several months. After moving back in with his mother, Ben discovers that his girlfriend, Jessica Morgan, has moved on with her life and is now dating an older college guy. Desperate for love and unable to cope with losing Jessica, Ben’s troubled past catches up with him as he kidnaps her in an attempt to regain her affection. Spiraling out of control and on a very dangerous path, Ben must ultimately decide whether to let her go, or hold on to the one person he loves, even if it means destroying them both in the process.”

Mike Welch Reelz Channel Interview

Mike Welch talks about potential Breaking Dawn timing being in February. Keep in mind we haven’t heard anything official on that, and that the Olympics are taking place in Vancouver at that exact time. It wouldn’t be the most ideal of times to film based on traffic alone (not to mention that every media person in town is probably working for the Olympics).

Michael Welch in Interview Magazine

Mike Welch sat down with Interview Magazine and chatted about his current work and New Moon:

LM: What about the paparazzi? Did you guys have to deal with that a lot?

MW: [LAUGHS] It’s funny you ask; we did, actually. It was my first experience with the paparazzi. They even got us when we were coming off the plane. I learned that they can just take a situation and put it into any context. There was one point when Taylor was talking to some people and the paparazzi took a picture and then I saw it online with a caption underneath that was like, “Taylor Lautner takes the time to talk to his fans, while Michael Welch is a jerk and just sits in his trailer …” It was just so weird. It’s a fascinating process to be a part of something this big, and this popular, ‘cause it’s sort of a double-edged sword. But I mean, I certainly have nothing to complain about; I’m very grateful to be involved.

LM: What’s happening with your character this time around?

MW: Well, you know, Mike Newton doesn’t go through too much of a journey, I’ll be honest. He sort of has his role to play in Bella’s life. In the movie it’s pretty much all about Bella, and how he relates with her, and him just being hopelessly in love—the character that is just really empathetic, and a little bit tragic in a lot of ways.
