Twilight Ranks 3 In Vulture’s Top 25 Fanbases

Here’s how the New York’s Vulture described Twilight Fans.

DEVOTIONAL PROFILE: Every so often, Hollywood gets a reminder that young men aren’t the only ones who go to the movies in droves. It happened in 1997, when Titanic became a cross-demographic blockbuster that nonetheless earned most of its cash thanks to repeat business from young women. Still, the lesson didn’t truly sink in until 2008, when the first Twilight film earned a staggering $192 million from an audience that was almost exclusively female. The first film was well timed, arriving at the feverish peak of popularity for Meyer’s book series, and it made superstars of its three leads; the next three sequels would do even better, earning around $300 million each. Studios that had formerly been on the hunt for the next Harry Potter franchise now modified their search: Maybe, if they tracked the avid reading habits of young women, they could find the next book-to-film phenomenon in its infancy.

What was it about the Twilight series that fans sparked to? Partly, it’s the way the series flirts with sex (the bloody transition from human to vamp is a metaphor for the loss of virginity) while still remaining chaste enough that younger fans can be drawn in … at least until Edward and Bella have their honeymoon night. But Meyer was smart to stoke her fans’ passions with the central love triangle between Bella and her beaus Edward and Jacob; when battle lines were drawn online between those who were Team Edward and those on Team Jacob, it only increased the bond between the reader (or viewer) and Meyer’s story. Twilight fans are so ardent, in fact, that geek mecca Comic-Con had to start slotting its Twilight panels earlier in the convention to suit the Twi-hards, who regularly queue up days in advance for the film franchise’s panels, swamping the less devoted fans of Marvel movies and other comic-book blockbusters. Those boy-heavy fan bases bristled at the intrusion, but they’d better get used to it: The record-breaking success of Twilight on the best seller list, at the box office, and on home video is only the beginning of a femme-dominated genre force, not an anomaly.

New Face Friday: Meet Erik Odom as Peter

Get to know our next nomad, Peter.  If you need a refresher on his character, check out our character bio section.

Q: When you walked into Comic-Con [at the end of the Breaking Dawn – Part 2 cast panel], you got some of the biggest shouts out of all the newcomers. How did that feel?

Erik: It was unbelievable. The only thing I could say it compared to was the Part 1 premiere when I walked down the red carpet. It’s just, you try to prepare yourself for it as much as you can, you know maybe the response will be big but maybe it won’t, you try to be ready for everything … but when it hits you, your knees buckle. I mean my knees buckled. It’s one of the craziest, craziest things. But the fanbase has always been so enthusiastic, so passionate. And I think part of it has always been a combination of people loving the character Peter and just also being on Twitter and being on Facebook and having fans reach out, just trying to interact as much as possible and including the fans as much as you can, you know. Because the fans are what make the fandom what it is.

Q: People love Peter, but they also love Peter with Charlotte. Their relationship’s really special, and I know that that’s something we hope to see on-screen, and I was wondering how far in advance did you meet Valorie [Curry], and you know make it into a rhythm with her and feel like you could portray that on-screen?

Erik:What was great about Valorie, even more so than a lot of the other vampires who I met once we went to Louisiana together, I actually – I didn’t know her personally, but we had a lot of mutual friends in Los Angeles – so through the small world of Facebook, we were able to link up after the whole casting announcement came up, and we actually grabbed lunch before we even started filming, before we left. So, we went to a place in L.A., sat down for about two hours, and after the initial twenty minutes of ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe I’m a part of this; Oh my God I can’t believe I’m a part of this!’ After twenty minutes of us geeking out together about how cool it was, we really dug in and talked about Peter and Charlotte’s relationship and their relationship to the other vampires. You know, because the covens are such an interesting thing, they call the nomads a coven but really it’s Peter and Charlotte versus the world. You know, so we talked about really diving into the relationship, back to Maria [in Eclipse] and back to the newborn army and their relationship with Alice and Jasper, and it was just nice that by the time we got to Louisiana together, we already had the seeds of this relationship planted, you know? It was really nice. I love Valorie.

The Breaking Dawn Part 2 Soundtrack Fan Perspective

This week on Movies.com Laura breaks down some of the fan reaction to the Breaking dawn Soundtrack artists.

Sitting at the end of the Breaking Dawn Part 2 soundtrack list is Carter Burwell’s Plus Que Ma Prope Vie. Burwell, the composer for Twilight, Breaking Dawn Part 1 and Part 2, will likely have another piano feature. The only thing more iconic from the first movie than Parmore’s Decode, was Burwell’s haunting series of chords from the score that typified longing and loneliness. Fans realize that the title of the track matches the inscription inside the locket that Renesmee wears meaning “more than my own life”. Though it’s listed at the end, fans are hoping that it underscores a family moment between Edward, Bella, and Renesmee.

Male TwiHard Wrapping Up His Column

Next Movie’s Male TwiHard is wrapping up his two-year Twilight column. Today he has an A-Z retrospective on what it’s been like.

Bloggers

You would think that “Twilight” bloggers are shut-ups who only eat Lipton soup, own 12 cats and cry every night in front of Access Hollywood. However, everyone I’ve met seems normal, social, has a sense of humor and is (very) willing to talk about other topics besides Team Jacob.

Shake Weight

I bought a Shake Weight for my costumes as Member of the Wolf Pack Who No One Calls. One, it didn’t get as big a reaction as I was hoping for at the Convention Costume Contest. Two, Shake Weights are a lot harder than you’d think.

Summit Confirms: No the Dance Scene Isn’t After the Credits

Both Kellan Lutz and Nikki Reed talked in recent interviews about a special scene at the end of Breaking Dawn 2. Somehow in the vast game of telephone that interviews can become this information morphed into a spoof, dance-off, prank on Bill Condon that the actors did would be tacked onto the end of the film.

Summit clarified the following to EW

Nikki Reed speculated to Perez Hilton that she thought the end could be a dance that 150 members of the cast performed one day on set as a surprise to Condon. But not so fast! Summit has confirmed to EW that this dance scene (which does indeed exist) is not in the final cut of the film. For now, the mystery continues…

We personally think it likely that the dance sequence would make a DVD extras thing. As for what the last item is, guess away.
