Chapter Eleven – Complications
Chapter Number: Eleven
Chapter Name: Complications
Page Numbers: 218-235 (Hardcover)
Date of Chapter: March 9 and March 10, 2005
Summary: Bella and Edward attend science class and both seem to feel an electric current passing between them. They both sit with their arms folded and hands balled up in fists to resist touching each other.
After science class Bella goes to gym. She is Mike’s partner for a badminton game and does poorly as usual. After the game it is apparent that Jessica has told everyone that Bella and Edward are a couple. Mike makes it clear that he doesn’t like Edward.
When Bella reunites with Edward after class she is furious when she finds out that Edward was basically spying on her via Mike’s thoughts in gym class. When they get into his car, Edward promises not to do anything like that again. Before Edward drops Bella at home he tells her two things 1) the reason she can never watch him hunt is that she might accidentally become his prey because vampires give themselves over to their senses when they hunt, and 2) Friday will be his day to ask her questions.
On Friday, Edward questions Bella every free moment. He gets some surprising answers. Bella’s favorite color is brown because she misses brown. Everything in Forks is too lush and green. They discover that they both like classical music like Debussey and modern groups (later revealed to be Linkin Park in interviews with Stephenie Meyer). Most of the questions concern books, but we don’t know the specific questions that were asked. The most embarrassed Bella gets is when Edward asks her about her favorite gemstone and she answers “topaz”. She admits that it is a recent favorite because it’s the color of Edward’s eyes. The questioning continues after school where they sit in Edward’s car talking for hours in Bella’s driveway. Suddenly, realizing it is now twilight, Edward tells Bella he better get going before Charlie comes home. He first however, describes twilight as the safest part of a vampire’s day.
Just before Edward leaves a car pulls up. It’s Billy and Jacob Black. Edward seems upset by their presence. When Bella looks at Billy, she can tell from his expression that he believes the legends of his ancestors that Edward is a vampire.
Characters Involved: Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, Mr. Banner, Coach Clapp, Mike Newton, Charlie Swan, Jacob Black, Billy Black.
Characters Mentioned: Jessica Stanley, Phil Dwyer
Places Visited: Forks High School, the Swan home.
Memorable Quotes:
“He looks at you like…like you’re something to eat.”
~ Mike stating to Bella why he doesn’t like Edward.
“I don’t speak Car and Driver.”
~ Bella asking for clarification on the type of car Rosalie drives.
“I couldn’t sleep.”
~Bella Swan to Edward
“Neither could I.”
~ Edward trying to make light of Bella feeling out of sorts in the morning.
“It was easier to ride with him if I only looked when it was over.”
~Bella describing her reaction to Edward’s driving.
“It’s twilight…It’s the safest time of day for us…The easiest time. But also the saddest, in a way…the end of another day, the return of the night. Darkness is so predictable…”
~ Edward describing his feelings as a day ends.
Important Information Learned:
Bella and Edward, according to Bella, seem to have an almost electric like connection.
Edward and Bella both sit the same way during a movie in biology class to avoid touching each other. The electric connection between them happens on consecutives days when movies are shown.
Vampires give themselves over to their senses when they hunt (much like sharks in a feeding frenzy), so it would be dangerous for any humans, regardless who they were, to be around them when they hunt.
Bella’s favorite color is brown because it is warm.
Bella’s favorite gemstone is topaz because it reminds her of Edward’s eye color.
Twilight is the safest time for vampires.
Edward is irritated by Jacob and Billy Black’s presence at Bella’s home.
Billy Black believes the vampire legends of his ancestors.

Chapter Nine-Theory
Chapter Number: Nine
Chapter Name: Theory
Page Numbers: 179-195 (Hardcover)
Date of Chapter: March 8, 2005
Summary: Bella and Edward drive home to Forks. During the ride, Bella continues to ask Edward “hypothetical” questions that continue to probe Edward’s ability to read minds. Edward finally asks Bella if she has any more theories as to why he has special abilities and Bella mention that she has one, but she is afraid to say it for fear that it may make Edward angry. Regardless, Edward encourages Bella to tell him. Bella then relates the discussion that she had with Jacob Black. Edward doesn’t confirm or deny that he is a vampire, but his reactions to this theory range from his facial expression freezing to his knuckles convulsively tightening on the steering wheel.
Edward asks Bella if she has told anyone else of this theory and she answers no. She then tells Edward that she did a bunch of vampire research online and that she came to the conclusion that it didn’t matter to her if he was a vampire. Edward can’t believe his ears that it doesn’t matter to Bella that he is a monster. In fact he is perpetually hung up on the words, “it doesn’t matter.” Throughout the ride Bella continues to question Edward on everything from his actual age, to his diet, to all sorts of traditional vampire lore (most of which Edward debunks as pure myth or exaggeration).
In between Bella’s questions, Edward continues to stress that he is dangerous to Bella, and that it is a mistake for him to be close to her. He also continues to refer to Bella as “different” and as “a magnet for trouble” because she doesn’t react to things the way most humans do.
When Edward drops Bella home, she gives Edward his jacket back because she doesn’t want to explain to Charlie how she got it. They say goodbye, and Edward promises to save Bella a seat during lunch.
When Bella comes in the door, Charlie remarks how Bella is home much earlier than he expected. Bella realizes that due to Edward’s fast driving she has probably beaten the girls back to Forks. The phone rings and it is Jessica who is also surprised that Bella is home so early; however, since Jessica is more curious about information on Bella and Edward’s relationship she doesn’t pursue this odd timing. Bella lets Jessica know she can’t talk because Charlie is listening in, and asks Jessica to bring her jacket, that she left in the backseat of Jessica’s car, to school tomorrow.
Bella goes upstairs to bed and is positive of three things: 1) Edward is a vampire, 2) there is a part of Edward that thirsted for her blood, and 3) she is in love with Edward.
Characters Involved: Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, Charlie Swan, Jessica Stanley.
Characters Mentioned: Jacob Black, Billy Black, Lauren Mallory, Emmett Cullen
Places Visited: The road from Port Angeles to Forks, the Swan home.
Memorable Quotes:
“I hear voices in my mind, and you’re worried that you’re the freak.”
~ Edward to Bella laughing at her for being worried that Edward can read everyone’s mind but hers.
“It’s easier to seem normal when I’m not accidentally answering someone’s thoughts rather than their words.”
~ Edward discussing his mind reading gift
“How old are you?”
“Seventeen,” he answered promptly.
“And how long have you been seventeen?”
His lips twitched as he stared at the road. “A while,”
~ the exchange between Bella and Edward regarding his actual age.
“I’d compare it to living on tofu and soy milk; we call ourselves vegetarians, our little inside joke.”
~ Edward discussing his diet
“You were right—I’m definitely fighting fate trying to keep you alive.”
~ Edward to Bella remarking how her first instinct was to fight off the men in Port Angeles, not to run away or scream.
“About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him—and I didn’t know how potent that part might be—that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.”
~ Bella reflecting on her feelings for Edward before going to sleep.
Important Information Learned:
Edward has to be fairly physically close to someone to read their mind. If he knows them better, he can hear them a few miles off, but that is the limit.
Edward thinks Bella’s mind is doesn’t work the way most humans’ minds do, so he can’t read hers.
Edward can and loves to drive incredibly fast.
Vampires like Edward:
• Aren’t burned by the sun, but don’t go into direct sunlight when humans are around
• Don’t sleep in coffins, and in fact can’t sleep at all
• Drink animal blood, but because of what they are they are still dangerous to humans because sometimes they can’t resist
Bella can tell if Edward is thirsty based on his eye color. She also says that he’s crabby when he is thirsty.
It’s easier for Edward to be around Bella if he is not thirsty.
It makes Edward anxious to be away from Bella, and it makes Bella anxious to be away from Edward.
Edward isn’t always the most dangerous thing out in the forest.

Chapter Seven – Nightmare
Chapter Number: Seven
Chapter Name: Nightmare
Page Numbers: 129-151 (Hardcover)
Date of Chapter: March 5-8, 2005
Summary: Bella comes home after her trip to LA Push and goes up to her bedroom. She puts on headphones and listens to a CD that Phil had given her so she wouldn’t have to think.
Bella falls asleep and has a dream. In the dream she is in the forest near the ocean. She’s trying to follow the sound of the waves so she can find the sun. Suddenly Jacob appears, grabs Bella, and tells her to run. Bella shrugs him off desperate to complete her quest to find the sun. In fact she can hear Mike calling to her. Next, Jacob transforms into a reddish brown wolf with black eyes and starts to growl. Bella can now hear Mike’s voice screaming for her to run, but she is distracted by this white light that is approaching her from the direction of the beach. Out of nowhere, Edward steps from the forest smiling at her with pointed teeth and saying, “trust me”. Just as Bella moves toward Edward the wolf jumps up and leaps in between them with his fangs aiming at the jugular.
Bella then awakens from her dream screaming. She is on her bed fully clothed. It is 5:00am and thankfully Charlie is already out fishing, so she didn’t wake him up. Unable to go back to sleep, Bella looks up vampire information on the Internet. Most of it is gory or information on role playing games. She is heartened somewhat by an entry about Italian vampires called Stregoni Benefici who are the mortal enemies of evil vampires. She evaluates all the vampire information and decides Edward fits some criteria like pale skin, speed, strength, and beauty; however, he doesn’t fit other criteria as he obviously can be out in the daytime.
More frustrated than ever Bella takes a walk in the woods to clear her head. She comes to the conclusion that whatever the Cullens are vampires, superheroes, or something she hasn’t thought of, they are not normal humans. She decides that she has two options 1) to take Edward’s advise to be smart and avoid him, or 2) to let things go on as they had been because clearly Edward could have hurt her several times and chose not to. Bella chooses the latter and further comes to the conclusion that she is completely drawn to Edward. In her dream, she realizes she screamed when the wolf attacked out of fear for Edward’s safety. Bella walks home now relieved that she has made a decision about her relationship with Edward.
Bella spends the rest of that day and the next uneventfully with Charlie. When she goes to bed on Sunday, she notices that the window in her room opens much easier than she would have expected.
When Bella goes to school on Monday it is bright and sunny. She runs into Mike who again tries to ask her out on a date. Bella bluntly tells him that she isn’t interested, but that Jessica is. Bella looks for Edward in her classes, but he isn’t there. Then, at lunch she notices that his whole family is absent too. When Bella goes home Jessica calls and moves the date that she and Bella are supposed to go dress shopping because Mike has asked her out to dinner. Bella goes outside to read and falls asleep on the quilt after being frustrated that all the characters in Jane Austen novels seem to be named Edward. Bella wakes up with a start when she hears Charlie’s cruiser pull up, but also has an eerie feeling she isn’t alone. Bella tells Charlie that the following evening she wants to go dress shopping with the girls. Charlie is confused because Bella isn’t going to the dance, and then decides that it’s just a girl thing.
The next day at school the weather is sunny and the Cullens are absent again. Right after school Bella meets up with the Jessica and Angela(Lauren can’t go) so they can go dress shopping in Port Angeles.
Characters Involved: Bella Swan, Charlie Swan, Mike Newton, Jessica Stanley, Angela Weber, (In Bella’s dream) – Mike Newton, Jacob Black, and Edward Cullen
Characters Mentioned: Phil Dwyer, Alice Cullen, Emmett Cullen, Jasper Hale, Rosalie Hale, Lauren Mallory, Renee Dywer, Tyler Crowley
Places Visited: the Swan home, the woods surrounding the Swan home, Forks High School.
Memorable Quotes:
“He stared at me like I’d just spoken in pig Latin.”
~ Bella referring to Mike’s reaction to hearing Bella’s essay on Shakespeare is about whether Shakespeare treatment of his female characters is misogynistic.
“I don’t think that’s the best idea…if you ever repeat what I’m saying right now I will cheerfully beat you to death, but I think that would hurt Jessica’s feelings…Really, Mike, are you blind?”
~ Bella turning down Mike’s offer of a date and telling Mike of Jessica’s feelings for him.
“Weren’t there any other names available in the late eighteenth century?”
~ Bella thinking how the heroes of the Jane Austen novels all seem to be named Edward.
“I wouldn’t have to explain this to a woman.”
~ Bella musing how Charlie doesn’t understand why she’s going dress shopping if she isn’t going to buy a dress for herself.
“Bells, I fed myself for seventeen years before you got here.”
~ Charlie letting Bella know he can fend for himself while she goes dress shopping.
Important Information Learned:
Bella’s bedroom window opens easily even though, in theory, she is the first one to open it in years.
Bella screams in her dream not because she is afraid of Edward, but because she is afraid for him.
Bella does extensive research online about vampires and discovers that not all vampires are considered evil.
Renee has sent a bunch of emails that get snippier in tone because she hasn’t heard from Bella during the week, but Bella just replies with a quick response that says she’s been out with friends and busy with school work and now enjoying good weather.
Bella decides that Edward isn’t a normal human being but she is still not sure if he is a vampire.
Bella agonizes over choices carefully evaluating all facts that she has amassed, but once she makes a decision she never looks back to second guess herself.
