Happy Birthday Michael Welch

A very happy 22nd birthday to Mike Welch who just missed celebrating his birthday at Comic Con. A couple of years ago Mike celebrated his 17th birthday at the Shore Leave sci-fic convention. Hopefully he had some fun and down time this year since he just wrapped shooting on Unrequited.

Jamie Campell Bower in The Prisoner

Knowing nothing about upcoming AMC series  The Prisoner, we decided to attend its panel discussion at Comic Con to learn more about this project that co-stars Jamie Campbell Bower.  We are glad we did because now we are really interested in seeing this remake of a classic 1960’s UK sci-fi series.

AMC describes the show as,  “ A man, known as “Six,” finds himself inexplicably trapped in “The Village” with no memory of how he arrived. As he explores his environment, he discovers that his fellow inhabitants are identified by number instead of name, have no memory of any prior existence, and are under constant surveillance. Not knowing whom to trust, Six is driven by the need to discover the truth behind The Village, the reason for his being there, and most importantly — how he can escape.”  In the series the leader of The Village is played by Ian McKellan and Jamie Campbell-Bower plays his son, who based on the clips shown, starts to question the life he has always known.

One of our favorite parts of the panel discussion was when Jamie was asked.  “What was it like having Magneto as your father?”, but Jamie held it together and came up with a sincere answer, “It was such a pleasure working with Ian. He is one of the finest actors that has ever lived. I feel blessed to be able to learn from someone of that calibre.”

There are two videos from the AMC site. One is the panel discussion that we saw and the second is Jamie Campbell-Bower interviewing Ian McKellan on set. (Make sure you check out the prisoner site because there are three more videos there.)

Borders Goes For Teen Market

In response to realizing that teens are now buying more books than ever, and realizing that many adults buy YA books, Borders has decided to change their approach a bit. Publishers Weekly covers the the change over which was in part inspired by the reaction to the Twilight Saga success.

“Popoff wants the teen section to move beyond books. Graphic novels and manga titles will be displayed immediately adjacent to the dedicated teen boutique, which is also next to genre fiction. Popoff said Borders has been seeing more crossover of adults interested in teen novels (such as the Twilight series), while some teens have shown an increased interest in categories such as romance.”

The trend isn’t limited to the US. In the UK they are reporting childrens book sales are up 8%.

Lee Safar In the Running for the Twilight Soundtrack

HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: How did you get involved with “New Moon”? Did they approach you, or did you approach them?

LEE SAFAR: How I came to find “Twilight” is a beautiful memory for me. Stu Henshall, a recent PR grad, and I had a chance meeting in London early this year. I gave him a copy of my debut EP “Who I’ve Become” to listen to. He went into his room and woke up the next morning, after having listened to my CD obsessively all night, he said, “I’m going to take you to see something today. Have you seen ‘Twilight’?” I told him that I hadn’t even heard of it but was intrigued. We went that day and saw the movie and I was immediately obsessed.

New Moon Movie Clips from Comic Con

So many of you have e-mailed us with various links informing us that these are on line. REPEATEDLY people in attendance were asked NOT to film these and specifically were told that if they end up on You Tube that we may not get film clips next year. Yet alas, there is always someone who has to go and spoil the fun. Thus we end up with multiple you tube versions of the footage. The admin team has discussed this at length with some other web sites as well and we have decided that we have to acknowledge the presence of these clips as this is obviously what everyone is talking about right now. So… even though we worry that this means we won’t get great footage like this next year… and even though these aren’t supposed to be for the general public… we are kind of up against a wall. Thus, we offer it to you to decide if you want to watch them or not. This way you can stop e-mailing us to tell us they are out there. And if they get removed from You Tube, then they get removed. But here are the clips shown in very bad filming with all the screaming going on around you so you don’t get the full effect.

Just to clarify on the issue – every clip from Alice in Wonderland to Tron came with the rule that we were not supposed to tape the footage.  And when they say we might not get clips next year, they mean from any of the studios who shared clips.  They give comic con special clips to reward the fans who paid the money and wait in line.  But with you tube and the internet, it’s now the fact that even if you can’t go you still get the reward.  So this wasn’t just Summit that was protecting their footage but EVERY studio there that was asking for support.

Various Twilight Comic Con Interview Clips

The below clips were all official interviews or authorized filming. The actual footage of the movie was not authorized. In fact there were officials in Hall H patrolling while the footage was being shown to prevent people from filming it. Eventually the footage will be on the Summit website or their authorized agents. Nonetheless, it’s the day of the micro hidden camera and the Internet, a look at the usual video hosting sites will let those dying to see the footage (albeit not in high quality) find it.

The five others in the series in high def found here. Keep in mind that YouTube’s servers are getting slammed right now so any YouTube footage is going to take a really long time to load.

Comic Con New Moon Panel Report

Alphie and Be My Escape just got in from the New Moon Panel and clip screening.  After sitting through some great footage of A Christmas Carol, Alice in Wonderland, and yes Tron, as well as listening to the Q&A with Bob Zemeckis followed by Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, we finally got to hear the Summit panel.

Of course the screaming rivaled that for the Beatles, but eventually died down so that we could have some real Q&A time with Chris Weitz, Rob Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Ashley Greene.  One of the most memorable questions was when they were all asked about what they were looking forward to doing in future films.  Ashley said she wanted to do the heavy fight scene in Eclipse.  Taylor said he was looking forward to the deeper love triangle and the tent scene.  But it was Rob and Kristen’s answers that really got the crowd reaction.  Kristen said she couldn’t wait to REALLY get pregnant, putting a jib in the many media outlets that was posted rumors to the fact that she was already pregnant.  Then Rob said he was looking forward to the cesarean birth in Breaking Dawn.  Much laughter will be heard on our footage once we get it uploaded.

On another note, the same guy from the press conference who got in a supposedly “screened” personal question again showed up in Hall H (how he accomplished this when Pel couldn’t even get back in is beyond us).  His question this time was about how they managed to portray Dracula… and he said it with plastic fangs in his mouth.  Not even cool and the panel pretty much just moved on.

The two clips that were shown… and I state this now that there are spoilers here… were of Bella and Jacob and the motor bikes and Bella trying to save Edward before he steps into the sun.

We will post footage of the Q&A as soon as we can get back to the hotel and get some power to the camera!  Other than that, I’ll wrap up now so that those of you who don’t want to spoiled won’t have to read any further.

SPOILERS!!

WARNING!  There are spoilers here, so look away if you really don’t want to know!

For the first clip, Jacob shows Bella how to work the bike, and as she reeves the engine a “ghost” of Edward appears.  This spurs her on and she heads down the road passing multiple “ghosts” on her way until she crashes.  Jacob rushes to her and worries over the bleeding gash on her forehead.  She apologizes for the blood, to which he says, “it’s only blood, Bella,” and removes his shirt so he can use it to clean her up.  Bella gives him the once over and tells him he’s kinda beautiful.  He then asks her is she maybe bumped her head too hard.

The second scene was of Alice and Bella driving through Volterra surrounded by the people in red robes.  Bella darts out of the car and rushes through the crowds toward the clock tower.  She sees Edward just as he is opening up his shirt and getting ready to step out into the sun.  She darts over though the fountain telling him to stop and then… the footage ends.  Great teaser there!
