Personal History:  Peter is a member of Maria’s army of newborn vampires in the south that would fight other covens for territory.  Despite the odds, he survives his first three years and befriends Jasper.  Jasper considers him “civilized.”  When Jasper and Peter were purging the newborns, Peter becomes very angry and protective of Charlotte.  Peter and Charlotte run away.  They find a life in the north that is free of fighting.  After five years, Peter finds Jasper and describes his life with Charlotte.  He convinces Jasper to come with him.  The three of them travel for a few years.  Peter notices that Jasper would be more depressed after hunting.  Eventually Jasper leaves Peter and Charlotte to wander on his own.  (EC13)

Jasper is not successful when he tries to locate Peter and Charlotte to help fight Victoria’s newborn army.  (EC14)

Personal History: Victoria turned Riley into a vampire shortly after James’ death (SM interview #6 with TST). Riley was devoted to Victoria and worked hard to “hunt the dregs. Take the humans that no one was going to miss, the ones who weren’t headed home to a waiting family, the ones who wouldn’t be reported missing” (BT p8). He brought prostitutes, runaways, drug addicts and gang members to Victoria so that she could feed or transform them into vampires for her army. He lured Bree Tanner, a starving teen runaway, to Victoria with the promise of a burger, and his voice was gentle; he saved Diego from being killed by gang bangers.

Riley didn’t care much about most of the newborn vampires he was in charge of corralling. (BT p2) The one exception was Diego, an 18 year old / 11 month old vampire. Diego claimed that Riley liked him because he cleaned up his messes. (BT p16) Riley lectured the new vampires to lay low, hunt smart, and focus on their thirst for blood. Riley lied to his new vampires about the dangers of sun exposure. When Diego and Bree discovered that sun wouldn’t burn them, they discussed whether or not to tell Riley. Bree felt Riley was “a bad dude” (BT p53) but Diego considered Riley a friend and wanted to talk to him about it. Diego told Riley privately about his new knowledge and was never heard from again.

Riley returned to the newborn lair furious. At first Bree thought he was mad because the group had stupidly torched another vampire, shrinking the numbers for their army. (BT p94). Riley was a different person. He no longer placated the group. Instead, he told more lies about an enemy group of yellow-eyed vampires who wanted to destroy the new group. He trained them for three days, led them on a killing spree on a ferry, then led them into battle. He gained Bree’s trust and participation by repeating some of Diego’s personal conversation, to gain her confidence. Unfortunately, Riley and Victoria had tortured details of that conversation out of Diego. “Killing Diego was what had changed Riley, had hardened him. [Bree] believed only one thing Riley had ever told [her]: he had valued Diego more than any of the rest of us. Had even been fond of him. And yet he’d watched [Victoria] hurt him.” (BT p153)

In the final battle, Victoria and Riley faced Edward, Bella and Seth. Edward tried to convince Riley to quit because Victoria was only using him. Riley was frantic and desperate, but when Victoria assured him that Edward was the liar, he believed her and continued to fight. (EC24) Seth, in werewolf form, with some help from Edward, killed Riley and ripped him to pieces. Riley was a pitiable character because he was lied to and manipulated (SM interview #6 with TST)

Personal History: Emily was visiting her cousin Leah–who was like a sister to her–when she met Sam Uley. Sam immediately imprinted on Emily, but Emily didn’t want anything to do with him because of his relationship with Leah. Eventually, though, Sam began to wear her down and they spent time together. It was during one of these times that Sam phased without meaning to and scarred Emily for life. He was so upset by what he’d done that he would have willingly thrown himself under a bus if it would make Emily feel better, but Emily ended up comforting Sam and their bond was cemented. (EC5)

Emily considers the shape shifting members of the pack her family (NM14 p. 338). Bella calls her “the wolf girl” when they first meet, and Emily acts as a motherly figure to the wolves, cooking huge batches of food for them to eat (NM14 p. 332). She also acts as archivist during the bonfire council meeting, taking notes while Billy and Old Quil recount the tribe’s stories. (EC11). Emily is involved in her nieces’ lives as well, and she was the photographer at Claire’s third birthday party (BD8 p. 152). It was actually Emily’s suggestion that led Quil to be the willing guinea pig for a makeup session at the party.

Her voice is described as melodic (NM14 p. 331) and Bella finds her “a cheerful person who never sat still”. (NM15 p. 350) While the wolf pack searched for Victoria during spring break, Bella spends time at Emily’s little house. Bella enjoys Emily’s company but does not remain in the house while Sam is present because “the aura of love and contentment that surrounded them was harder to take in concentrated doses” (NM15 p. 350). Emily is also welcoming to Bella when she attends the Quileute council meeting (EC11 p. 241).

Emily was the first one to tell Jacob and the pack the bad news about Harry’s morning heart attack (NM16 p. 367). Emily’s house was also the place where Quil first meets Emily’s niece Claire and imprints on her. (EC8 p. 174) She was part of the phone news line with Billy, Sue, and Old Quil, keeping abreast of the status of the fight between Victoria’s newborn vampires and the werewolves. (EC26 p. 588).

The relationship between Sam and Emily is often compared to that of Bella and Edward in its intensity and connectivity (NM5 p. 117 / BD13 p. 244)

So folks, what that means unless you are a SAG member, (and even then if you are a SAG member, you know that having great representation, connections, and luck have a lot to do with it to.) the roles in Twilight are not up for grabs for the general public.

There’s a lot going on this Halloween, and I don’t just mean the collection of candy and parties.

1. Eclipse releases in the UK, Ireland, and Spain. According to Crepúsculo, the Spanish version of the Lexicon, Stephenie will videotape a special message to her Spanish fans that will be played at the FNAC bookstores.
2. Also on Halloween, Stephenie will be doing a chat via the readergirlz site. The Chat is at 12:00 midnight Eastern USA time, 11:00pm Central, 10:00pm Mountain, and 9:00pm Pacific.  That would be 5:00am November 1 and 6:00am November 1 for the UK and Europe mainland folks. I tried to do the Australian conversion (Are you 14 or 16 + hours at this time of year?)and I think its around 2:00pm on November 1.
3. If you are going as Edward, Bella, Jake, the Cullens,  or anyone from the Twilight Saga to a Halloween Party this year. Let me know ([email protected]). We’ll put up some pictures of the different characters as we get them.

Speaking of parties, we just added something to the Twilight Lexicon Shop. The other day a friend was mentioning that her daughter was having a Twilight Themed party, but there were no Twilight invitations out there. Well, now there are invitations, thank you notes, and even signs to put in your lawn for your very own Twilight themed party.

This year New Moon is eligible to be in the top ten teen reads. Go over to the Teen Reads Site and vote by tomorrow!

In case you missed this over at StephenieMeyer.com in the news section, starting Monday, Oct. 22 the comic strip Mutts by Patrick McDonnell will be doing a week long Twilight inspired comic strip featuring a bat named Edward and a bird named Bella.  Grab your local paper and check it out!  For those of you that miss it, the comic will be posted at his website starting Nov. 5th.

"There is no official release date for Breaking Dawn, and for a very good reason: I haven’t finished it yet. Now that I’m (mostly) done with running around the world to promote Eclipse, I can settle in and work on BD. However, you never know how long it will take. I have roughly 1/3 – 1/4 left to write, and that could take a while.

Another thing–BD would not come out on a Sunday. Tuesday is usually the day things are released. Another point is that I wouldn’t do a live morning show on Sunday, and they’re going to want me to do that.

So don’t circle the tenth of August on your calendar or make a cool counter yet. I’ll let you know when there is an official date."
