The Quileuete Nation Seeks Tsunami Legislation And Needs Your Help

The first time we went to La Push the one thing that struck us were all the tsunami escape route signs that you see. We often think of Tsunamis as something affecting Asia, but they are a very real danger to those living on the Pacific Coast. Residents in California experienced destruction of property from the recent Tsunami as seen in this video. Imagine what would have happened if the quake was in North America and people didn’t have hours to prepare, and the relatively insignificant destruction of property was instead lost human life. In fact, in the year 1700 there was a major quake in the Canadian/US border( estimated 8.0) resulting in a Tsunami that caused mass destruction across the Pacific.

The Quileuete Nation needs your help. They have made a video and have pending legislation to allow them to better defend themselves against threats of nature. Please call your senators and tell them that you support this legislation.

The Quileute Tribe is utilizing a newly released video to assist in educating the public about the tsunami and flooding dangers facing the tribe. Situated along the Pacific Ocean and bordering the Olympic National Park, the members of the tiny one square mile fishing village are placing their hopes of moving to higher ground on the recently filed Quileute Tsunami Protection legislation (HR 1162) introduced on March 17, 2011 by Congressman Norm Dicks and Senator Maria Cantwell (D).

The video is posted on the Quileute Nation website at http://www.quileutenation.org/ and on the tribe’s Youtube page at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYksWOoP9pU.

Chairwoman Bonita Cleveland states, “This video is a very important educational tool for us to share with the public because it shows the urgency and need for the passage of this newly introduced legislation. It will explain the importance of us being able to relocate to higher ground the entire lower village which houses our administrative offices, tribal school, senior center, churches and the US Coast Guard Station that protects Tribal fishermen. It demonstrates the need for the safety of all our tribal members. The only hope the Tribe has to increase the amount of land available for traditional, religious and cultural use, housing and education is for historic Quileute lands held by the federal government to be transferred back to the Tribe.”

The video also shares footage of the Japanese tsunami. Cleveland shares, “Like everyone around the world watching the images on television, it is heart wrenching to see the loss of life and devastation, and the Quileute people’s thoughts are with our brothers and sisters in Japan. We continue to send prayers to everyone impacted by this catastrophe. Sadly, it also emphasizes the urgent and immediate need for the Quileute Tribe to move to higher ground, so we are grateful for the introduction of this critical legislation by Congressman Dicks and Senator Cantwell.”

The video provides significant insight into the many years the tribe has devoted to the quest to attain the lands needed to move to higher ground.

Cleveland says, “The introduction of the legislation is just the first step. We need the support of the American public to get this legislation passed. Please watch these videos and share them with your friends and family and then contact your legislators and ask them to support the Quileute Tsunami Protection legislation. The Quileute Tribe is grateful for your support.”

MTV Australia Talks to Xavier Samuel About Eclipse

MTV Austraila caught up with Xavier Samuel and asked him about his time spent on Eclipse:

MTV: Were you ever worried about just being known as the guy who was in ‘Twilight’?

Xavier: That never crossed my mind. I just felt really lucky to be cast in a role that wasn’t your average villain. There was a bit of complexity to this guy, but I never really felt like, I’m going to be playing vampires for the rest of my life!

MTV: Did you feel the pressure acting out such a beloved book and series?

Xavier: Well I felt great about it because when I flicked through the book I was like, where’s Riley?! (laughs) There was like one line, literally one sentence!! I was fortunate in the sense that they decided to depart from Bella’s point of view for the first time – it’s still faithful to the book but it extrapolates other dimensions in it. So there is a kind of degree of expectation and pressure to remain true to a character that is so close to so many people’s hearts. So the pressure’s on, certainly for the characters that have more of a journey. But I think they’ve done an amazing job bringing the books to life.

MTV: Is there any talk about developing Stephanie Myer’s fifth book ‘The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner’? Because you’d obviously be a big part of that…

Xavier: Well I haven’t heard any whispers, but it’s a really cool back story. I remember reading it, David Slade [director of ‘Twilight: Eclipse’] gave me the manuscript of this book, and it really sang to me, and for me it was a great source of information as well as being a great story.”

Don’t Forget the Kristen Stewart Birthday Covenant House Project

Just a reminder and an update about the Kristen Stewart Birthday project:

“To celebrate Kristen Stewart’s birthday on April 9th, Twilightish, PattzStewGlobal and the “Saturday Sites” (see below**) have joined together to raise money for Covenant House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping child runaways get off the streets.

In her recent Vogue interview, Kristen said that “Her plan is to find a way to help teenage runaways get back on their feet, a subject close to her heart after her role in Welcome to the Rileys.” What better birthday present than to help fulfill Kristen’s wish?

We’ll be promoting Covenant House on our websites until April 9th, Kristen’s birthday, at which point all funds raised will be given to Covenant House in Kristen Stewart’s name.

**EXCITING UPDATE**

We have learned from Covenant House that everything we raise up to March 31st will be matched twice. That means $5.00 = $15.00, $10.00 = $30.00, $25.00 = $75.00, $100 = $300.00 etc…

In order to make sure our donations get matched we must send what we have via check or money order postmarked by the 31st. What we send at that time will be matched.

We will then continue to raise money until the original cut off date of April 9th, Kristen’s Birthday.

Once the project is completed and our final donations have been sent to Covenant House they will issue a receipt and an acknowledge letter that will include the total amount raised (including what was added from the matching gift program) by our project efforts in honor of Kristen Stewart’s Birthday.

Judi Shekoni: A Twilight Fan Before the Movies Came Out

Judi Shekoni who plays Zafrina in Breaking Dawn was just interviewed by her hometown newspaper back in Manchester, England. Judi reveals that she was a Twilight fan way before the movies came out and that she is Team Edward!

You’re currently filming for Twilight: Breaking Dawn, playing Amazonian vampire Zafrina – were you a fan of the franchise before securing the role?

Absolutely. I read the first two books when I was on a cruise around the Bahamas with my friend Jenny. I tend not to read fiction but I got to the stage of boredom that I would have tried anything. At first, it seemed a bit weird and I remember thinking ‘I don’t understand, it’s all about kids’, but the more I read, the more hooked I was. At one point, I was like get me off this ship I need to go buy the next book. When the first film was released, me and my friends all booked tickets in advance and we just adored it.

It’s taken on element of the surreal now because just the other day I was stood in the Cullen house, looking at their book shelf thinking as if I’m here!

What has it been like working with the cast?

Everyone has been super nice, there’s an atmosphere of family. Spending time with everyone has been great, Rob (Pattinson) is such a laugh and it’s been an enjoyable experience. There’s a mix of nationalities here, and the Canadians are a lot like the Brits with their humour. Sometimes you can join a project like this and be met by a few prima-donnas, but that couldn’t be further from the truth here. All us newcomers are welcomed like we’ve been involved since the beginnings. It helps that we’re in the most beautiful hotel. It’s like a network of private mini lodges; I’ve even got my own fireplace!”

Emily Browning Clarifies Her Position on the Twilight Series

Prior to 2007 if you looked for images surrounding the Twilight Saga, you were faced with fan-made banners of Emily Browning and Henry Cavill depicted as Bella and Edward (like the one seen left).  They were two actors mentioned by Stephenie Meyer in a fantasy ideal casting on her website.

Roughly two years ago, Emily Browning was quoted (and apparently misquoted) that she turned down the role after having auditioned for it. She just clarified her statement for Indie Wire as part of the PR junket for her new movie Sucker Punch.

“I chose not to audition,” Browning said about “Twilight” which was offered to her during this should-I or shouldn’t-I period of career introspection. “The author at one point stated that I would be her ideal Bella, but I chose not to audition because I was at a point in my career where I wasn’t sure I wanted to work, I definitely didn’t want to sign onto a trilogy so I didn’t audition, but there were a lot of things people said: ‘you turned it down’ no that’s not the case, ‘you were offered it and you turned it down,’ no, no, no, that’s not what happened at all. And there were battles but it was really just as simple as I don’t want to work right now so…”
