EW Interviews Chris Wietz: The Post Movie Reaction

“ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was your biggest fear going into [opening] weekend?
CHRIS WEITZ: I didn’t have any particular fears. The tracking numbers were enough to indicate that I wouldn’t be letting the studio down. But if one could imagine their biggest fears, it would be complete rejection of the movie, by the fans. What I’ve realized over the last week is I won’t necessarily get good reviews for this movie. Having swallowed that, this was made for the fans, and if you don’t get it, then you don’t get it.

Did the negative reviews surprise you?
Nothing surprises me in terms of reviews. Having been a reviewer myself, there are only two ways to spin this story. You can either be the one guy who says this is a great movie, or more likely, take a more jaundiced view of the whole thing. And given the media blitz that has accompanied New Moon, it’s rather unsurprising. I do wish there was more appreciation for cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe. I think he’s a genius and I think he made something beautiful.”

Chris Weitz Not Giving Up On Directing

Looks like rumors that surfaced this weekend that Chris Weitz would direct one more film and then give up the business were blown out of proportion. According to Variety:

“Weitz said he plans to go to work for Summit right away on “The Gardener,” with deals in the works for Weitz and Eric Eason (“Manito”), who wrote the screenplay. The picture is about a hard-working immigrant who lives in Los Angeles and his efforts to protect his son.

Weitz said he will begin production in March or April.

“There are no werewolves or vampires, just a Mexican gardener in Los Angeles,” Weitz said.

Weitz also dispelled reports that he would stop directing movies after “The Gardener,” an assertion that came from an interview he gave to Moviemaker magazine. The retirement angle got picked up by the New York Post’s Page Six late last week.”

USA Today Covers New Moon

There are some gorgeous pictures. You may want to buy this issue tomorrow.  Some sample quotes:

Chris Wietz:
“Edward does make a stupid mistake by leaving Bella (in New Moon), and that allows Jacob in,” says director Chris Weitz. “You can understand why Bella starts to develop feelings for him. He’s the right man at a frightening time for her, and his devotion is touching. Even die-hard Edward people will understand.”

Taylor Lautner:
“We all get along great and we’re in this together,” says Taylor Lautner. “Rob (Pattinson) did a terrific job of bringing Edward alive. I just hope fans believe I did the same for Jacob.”

IESB: Chris Wietz, Melissa Rosenberg, and Wyck Godfrey

IESB had a chance to talk to New Moon director, Chris Weitz, screen writer, Melissa Rosenberg, and producer Wyck Godfrey.

“Q: Was there ever any thought of trying to get your mother to make a cameo in any of your films, like possibly the grandmother in the first scene of New Moon?

Chris: How fun. I think it would have been difficult for me to say, “Mom, we’d like you to play a woman who is so old she horrifies Bella when she recognizes herself in the mirror.” But, I’m glad that people still remember my mom. For all who don’t know who she is, she was nominated as Best Supporting Actress for Imitation of Life. I think she’s put movies behind her for good, and now she just raises me and my brother.

Q: There are a lot of hunky guy moments in this movie that the girls are going to go crazy for. Even Laurent gets to show up bare-chested. Can you guys talk about constructing those moments and then delivering them?

Melissa: I wish I could take credit for the moments of Jacob pulling off his shirt and Edward pulling off his shirt. They are in the book and it seemed unwise to leave them out.

Chris: That would be a cut that you would regret. I like to say that it’s all essentially economics. You see, the Quileutes don’t have a very high average income and they can’t afford the t-shirts they would need, given the amount of times they turn into wolves on short notice and their clothes burst. They’d really have to go to Wal-Mart, every 10 minutes. They just go around in shorts, for that reason.”

Chris Weitz Says Expect 10 Minutes of Deleted Scenes

Steve AKA Frosty from Collider, had a lucky elevator ride with Chris Weitz and got the New Moon DVD scoop:

“Since I didn’t have a chance to ask a question during the press conference, I used my shared elevator ride to find out what extras would be on the DVD and how many minutes of deleted scenes “Twilight” fans could expect.  While he confirmed the usual stuff like a commentary with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, the big news is he told me there would be around ten minutes of deleted scenes.  More after the jump:

From the way Weitz spoke, I believe the DVD is going to have the deleted scenes placed back into the scene so you can watch the full scene play and not just see the stuff that was cut out.  I’m not sure if the movie will be an extended edition, or if the deleted scenes will be in a separate area of the disc.  I’m sure we’ll hear about that soon enough.”

Chris Weitz talks New Moon, Eclipse, and Fans

MTV has a great interveiw with New Moon Director Chris Weitz. Below is a small excerpt besure to check out teh article in its entire at MTV.com

“As a fan and a filmmaker, I’m excited to see finished stuff from ‘Eclipse’ rather than anything in progress,” Weitz said. “When you see works in progress, there’s always some guy standing in front of some big green curtain, and it’s all terribly disappointing. You really want to see the good stuff once it’s all finished.”

The article has some great information on how Chris Weitz and David Slade transitioned bewtweened the two films.  The best quote from the interview  “[I] was reading the book and really trying to pay attention to what I thought the devoted reader would want out of the film,” he said. “And I thought, ‘Well, they want something grand.’ “

So is it true? Do Twilight fans want something grand to come from New Moon?? I know silly question.
