Official casting announcement

Bio:

Edi Gathegi was born March 10, 1979 in Nairobi, Kenya.  When he was a baby, his family moved to California where he was raised with his older brother and younger sister.

Although he’s always enjoyed being a performer and entertainer, he never considered it seriously until his junior year in college when he took an acting class.  In fact, during high school, he and his friends made fun of the “theater geeks,” so he finds it ironic that now he’s one of them.  He went on to graduate from NYU’s prestigious MFA program for acting.

His first professional audition was for a part in Spike Lee’s film Inside Man.  It had been his dream to work with the legendary director, so Edi was thrilled to be cast.  However, in an unfortunate turn of events involving union contract issues, he was cut from the film.  He still hopes to get the opportunity to work with Spike Lee on a future project.

In looking for roles, he’s most interested in characters that are different from himself.  He’s gone from playing a psychopathic drug lord in the film Gone Baby Gone to a conservative religious doctor in the TV series House.  He also points out that he’s very different from the part of a slightly French-accented vampire.

In real life, he considers himself goofy, a class clown.  He is one of the main pranksters on the set of Twilight.  In a role he created for such purposes, he cast himself as Kelly, a valley girl from California, who is Jackson Rathbone’s (Jasper) biggest fan.  “Kelly” calls Jackson in his hotel room and professes her love for him.

He read for the part of Laurent in November 2007 before a script was even available.  Having no information on the role or the movie when he showed up for the audition, he was shocked as he read through the audition materials.  “What, is this a vampire movie?”  Halfway through the audition, he was having so much fun with director Catherine Hardwicke, he said a silent prayer that the story was good.  After getting the part, he remembered that a few months earlier his friend, Electra, talked about a book she loved that was being turned into a movie.  Although he didn’t pay much attention to it at the time, he realizes now she was referring to Twilight.

He’s since read all three of the books and found the story, which he defines as “a romance set in a world where vampires exist,” to be “truthful, kind, and compelling.”  One of his favorite parts in the book is when Bella realizes she’s in love with Edward.  He says he “loves [that] moment.”

In addition to reading the books to prepare for the part of Laurent, he immersed himself in all things French.  He listened to language tapes, watched French films, and ate French food, he says with a smile.  It was important for him to understand the “rules of the language and articulation” to accurately portray a slightly-French character.

He also created an elaborate back story and read about Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges, otherwise known as the black Mozart.  Although the timeline doesn’t quite match up, Edi says he was “a true renaissance man” and “Laurent would totally have been best friends with him before he turned [into a vampire].”  He considers Laurent “creepy” and extremely dangerous, but Edi also sees his humanity.  He’s basically a “good guy plagued by the necessity to survive” who is intrigued by the Cullen’s idea of “self-evolution.”

His favorite part to film was when the “nomadic vampires” came out of the forest onto the baseball field.  He says, “I believe it’s going to be pretty sick.”  Noting that he wore special contacts for the part of Laurent, he enjoyed “creeping people out with the eyes.”

Edi says he was clueless as to the enormity of the Twilight fan base, but that it’s “totally frickin’ rad.”  People have begun to make fan videos of him which he finds flattering and thrilling.

As to future projects, Edi is reluctant to talk about them until the “ink has dried.”  But one day he would love to play his own father in a film about his life.  He said he came to the United States from Kenya “with $50, a suitcase, and a dream [and] now has five degrees from Berkeley and is a Dean.”

Although he’s not necessarily a fan of vampire films, he says it’s his “dirty little secret” that he has wanted to play a vampire; he’s literally dreamt of being one.  “Vampires are kinda sexy and man needs to be reminded of how sexy he is every now and then.”   Twilighters are happy that Edi’s vampire dreams have come true and are excited to see him bring the dangerous, but sexy, Laurent to the big screen.

And to answer the age-old question, should Edward bite Bella?  Edi replies “frick yeah.”  What a true romantic.

Producer: Greg Mooradian

So far you have heard from behind the scenes producer Scott Murray, whose favorite book in the series is Eclipse for its action and character plot.  And then came producer Wyck Godfrey, whose understanding of the need for reality in the film as well as his admitted love of werewolves, got us all very excited for the final product.

Now we will hear from the man who caught the vision first, Twilight producer Greg Mooradian.  Greg first fell in love with the book Twilight long before we ever saw the book on the store shelves.  With an advance copy in hand Greg soon began to pursue the project.  Greg admitted later that day which book in the series was his favorite – for the wonderful producer – Twilight reigns supreme for its emotionally charged love story.  It was a thrill to spend time with him on set and as you are about to see, the film is in very good hands.

We are proud to present an onset interview with Producer Greg Mooradian:

Signing Tour

Stephenie has updated her website with the latest Breaking Dawn Concert-Signing information.

The event is designed to give fans a truly unique, one-of-a-kind experience by featuring music that inspired Meyer while writing the Twilight Saga. Music has played such a strong role in the writing of the series that Meyer has created playlists for each novel. Special musical guest Furstenfeld will perform several songs featured on these playlists, including "Sound of Pulling Heaven Down," the platinum-selling "Hate Me", and "Overweight".

Those not near a tour city or who are unable to get tickets, please know we will have at least one of these events broadcast online for everybody to get a chance to enjoy.

Posted with permission from Stephenie’s MySpace:

This is just so you can get a feel for what my last year was like (not to mention writing a 186,000+ word book). Also, so people who say, "You’ve never been to _____!" can see if they’re right.

Our Map of States Stephenie has visited:

Also included in this extensive list of visits are:

* Denotes visited this year.

Also, since we have had several emails concerning this. We do not have any insider information on the finer points of ticket ordering.  The process was pretty clear on the last two signing tours, so I’m sure the instructions will be just as good for this tour when they have all the details ironed out and are ready to release them. We’re standing by waiting to order along with the rest of you.

Blue October

With the announcement of Stephenie’s Breaking Dawn/Blue October signing tour we have received many questions about this group, most of them asking… "Who is Blue October?"

I thought I would take a moment to introduce those of you who are unfamiliar with the group to the music of Blue October and its relationship to the Twilight Saga.

Blue October appeared on Stephenie’s radar for for the first time during the writing of New Moon.  The Sound of Pulling Heaven Down exemplified the happiness that Edward felt in his reunion with the love of his life, Bella, after the traumatic events of the year without her.  The song Hate Me was included with the playlist as an alternative song choice for Edward’s POV as he acts on the heart wrenching decision to leave Bella.  Following the release of New Moon the group had yet another song grace the air waves – a song many Twilight fans were drawn to because of its harmony with chapter 15 in New Moon – the chapter we know as Bella’s drowning.  That song was called Into the Ocean.   Never has any other song so paralleled the pain and helplessness of letting go as painted by Into the Ocean, and to this day sits on many Twilight playlists as a favorite.

With the long awaited release of Eclipse came another wonderful playlist with Blue October again taking a prominent place on that list.  The song Overweight signified the worries that encompassed Jacob’s life.  Just as before yet another Blue October song found its way onto many fans personal Eclipse playlists.  That song was Calling You and when listened to from Edward’s POV you feel the the absolute devotion and joy he has for Bella’s final choice to stay with him…as the song so eloquently states, "I can’t believe you actually picked me."

As you can see, just like Muse, Blue October has been long associated with the series and has been a fan favorite from its chart topping album Foiled to its newest release Foiled for the Last Time.  We are excited to experience this once in a life time book signing event with not only our favorite author, but with an artist who has exemplified so many of our most memorable Twilight moments in song.

Twilight Tuesday

Stephenie teams up with Blue October for what can only be called the COOLEST book signing tour in history!  For more details, pop on over to MTV’s blog where Blue October front man Justin Furstenfeld talks about his involvement with the tour and possibly writing Twilight inspired music.

Tour dates:

August 1st – New York City, Nokia Theater at Times Square

August 5th – Chicago, Harris Theater

August 7th – Los Angeles, Royce Hall

August 12th – Seattle, Benaroya Hall

More information on ticketing to come.  Use the threads above to begin planning your meet ups in these areas.  And before the upheaval begins, yes we know there are only 4 signing dates.  And yes, that will be it for now as there are no other dates planned at this point.  These are HUGE venues.  The Theater seating capacities range from 1,588 on the smallest to 2,500 at the largest.

This type of signing has never been done before!  This is an unprecedented event – history in the making.  Please remember that Stephenie is one person and that she has already done one big tour this year!  Stephenie reminded us of this on her website.  She even gave a hint that she is trying to find a way so that no one will miss out on the fun.

I’ve toured extensively in the past three years and I need to scale it back for my own mental and physical health. Don’t panic, though — if I’m not coming anywhere close to your town, we’re working on a way to make sure everyone can see the fun of the Breaking Dawn events!                             ~Stephenie

Explanation of the New York signing bookplate:

The New York signing will indeed take place before the release of Breaking Dawn.  Little Brown is making allowances for this by supplying Bookplates to those in attendance.  A book plate is a sticker, like the author signed one in this picture,  that can be placed in your copy of Breaking Dawn once you have purchased it later that weekend.
