Stephenie Meyer Discussion Points From Imprint Podcast

Here is what came up with the lunch that the fansites had with Stephenie Meyer. They will have full transcripts later of the 4-hour interview. Much of it will be released after Eclipse comes out as to not spoil movie for anyone, but this is a listing of some main talking points:

  • Midnight Sun: Is not off the table. It won’t be her next project, but she has not cancelled it. She needs it to be the thing she is the most excited about to  write it effectively or it won’t be good.
  • It was a 4.5 hour interview very laid back atmosphere, they discussed everything.
  • Bree Tanner:
    • Freaky Fred: In his human life was that he was very introverted nerdy human science type very intelligent who observed everyone who kept his distance from people by always avoiding eye contact. That translated into his vampire repulsion technique no one wants to watch or see him. He still retains his intelligence and inquisitiveness.
    • Don’t watch: the line was to both Bree and to Bella in equal measure.
    • Riley: Stephenie’s attitude/view of Riley had changed.  People lost sympathy for Riley and she did too when writing it.
    • Diego made Riley assist in the actual killing of Diego.
    • Victoria enjoyed making Riley do it.
    • Riley did try to save Diego but Victoria wouldn’t show mercy.
    • The fact that Riley cared for Diego made Victoria want to hurt Diego more and after Riley helps in his death he totally lost every good part of himself. embraced the dark side in a sense.
    • Stephenie hated killing Bree.
    • Bree and Diego as humans were strong minded as humans that prevents them from being totally animalistic as vampires
    • She always knew the Volturi had visited Victoria. The fact that Victoria is now forced into a decision is why Alice can suddenly see what is happening.
    • Jane acts without Aro’s direct knowledge. Aro sends her and the team to North America with Aro’s blessing to act as Jane sees fit. Jane would actually have liked to kill Alice too because she knows that Alice would be Aro’s bigger prize than her if Aro ever got her in Italy permanently. She would be higher ranked than Jane and Jane actually hates Alice more than Bella. However Jane realized that Aro would kill Jane if Alice died at her hands or inaction, so Jane has no choice in the end.
    • Edward didn’t tell anyone that he read Bree’s thoughts because any info Edward got was not going to change anything. It wouldn’t make anything better at that point. Bella was also still human and he didn’t want to risk a human Bella by saying anything.
  • Breaking Down: The parody version of Breaking Down that Stephenie wrote in her head as a release from stress.
    • Stephenie just decided to write in her head a story where Charlie ends up as a meth addict, Bella accidentally kills Alice, Edward runs off in depression can’t stand Bella anymore, Bella settles down in the arms of Mike Newton who then leaves her and runs off with Eric Yorkie. Bella can’t take it anymore walks to the infamous cliff goes to commit suicide then decides she can’t do it turns back from the cliff trips over her own two feet, trips, hits her head on a rock and dies.
  • Other novellas:
    • Nothing immediately in the works, but didn’t discount idea totally
    • If she were to continue she would write series from Rensemee’s and Leah’s points of view
  • Downside of fame:
    • No chance in interviews anymore to really in depth character questions because bigger media glosses over the little stuff all the fans want to know. In other words the interview that all focus on the dream, etc.
  • Themes:
    • Stephenie doesn’t feel that Twilight is out there to have a message or theme and that everyone should choose as the characters do. It’s the choice that they made in their circumstances. She didn’t write it to have a specific theme or message, but if she had to pick something there is an over arching theme of choice and what the pros and cons of any given choice are. But that’s not to say the books are an allegory on choice.

Comments

  1. MeyaRose says:

umm… there are a lot of typos, I had to think to figure out what you were talking about…

    • Twilight_News says:

Sorry typing as they are talking live hard to keep up

      • you guys are awesome, getting us the news so quickly. I can’t listen tonight, so I’ll take whatever you can give me. Kudos to you for being on top of it…I can figure out the typos :)

  2. MeyaRose says:

“the line was to bother Bree and to Bella”
“Diego made Riley assist in the actual killing of Riley.”
    “Edward Yorkie”
    ???
Just saying, there are some typos…

    • mamaheather says:

really, thats all you have to say about the interview is that there are typos in the recap?!?!?

  3. MiVidaLoca says:

The typos are expected (while quickly trying to transcribe a convo and put it out for us)and are pretty easy to figure out IMO if you know the stories. The line was for both Bree and Bella where he said close your eyes. Victoria Riley assist in the actual killing of Diego.
    Newton ran off with Yorkie.

    • Twilight_News says:

Think I fixed all the typos. Thanks for the list. I read the both vs bother thing three times and didn’t catch it.

      • MiVidaLoca says:

It’s easy to do. I look at notes I type and sometimes wonder what the heck I put. LOL I didn’t have a problem figuring them out. Thanks for giving us this, it was nice to see some things confirmed.

  4. I thought that Diego made it to the clearing. The screams of the last vampire who attacked Jacob sounded just like him, according to Bree. I figured he was hiding, waiting out the fight to get to Bree, until Jasper put his hands on her head, when he jumped out to save her. Why else would a vampire reveal themselves after the fight is already over?

    • Catherine Elizabeth says:

Bree says that it was like Diego screaming. I think she was just imagining what his death was like. She was clear that she knew that Diego was dead already, before they even made it into the clearing. Why would a vampire expose him self? In Eclipse it never says that a vampire came out of hiding, it seems to me that Leah caught the scent of one and the just approached on her on. At least that was my interpretation after reading both books.

    • I thought I’d better take a more careful look at the figures to see where Diego is at the end of the book:
      ___ ___ ___ ___

At Victoria’s cottage: 22 plus Vic and Riley = 24

Ashes on floor (-1 vamp): 21 plus Victoria and Riley = 23
Confirmation: Bree’s headcount just before dawn: 20 plus Vic plus Riley plus absent Diego = 23

Fred leaves on day of the battle (-1 vamp) = 22 (including Diego)

Sara kills male blond she doesnt know name of (-1 vamp) (including Diego, Bree, Victoria and Riley): 21

Victoria + Riley + Total at battle including Bree with Diego = 21

(Carlisle says there were 18, including Bree, at first; Edward adds Victoria and Riley to the count, 20)

Jane’s tally of the group defeated by the Cullens: 20
      ___ ___ ___ ___

So, it appears that I was wrong, and that Diego didn’t survive the conversation with Riley. :(

  5. I am SO excited that SM will finish Midnight Sun. IMO, the best book in the Twilight saga.

    • Me too! I wish that it was going to be her next project, instead of something else. I loved what she had posted on her website, couldn’t stop reading it. Personally, I would love to see all of the books from Edward’s POV. We could see how his time alone went in New Moon, how he handled the events in Eclipse, what he was going through in Breaking Dawn. He’s the one voice that’s been left out so far, and from what little we’ve gotten, his voice is my favorite.

  6. Finally got it to work. Missed the Fred part, nice to know a bit more about him. Thanks for the live written report, typo’s and all. Looking forward to the full transcript of their 4.5 hours of hanging out. If Ms Meyers does this next year, those four fan sites should be ineligible to go again – spread the experience around.

  7. thanks for this Lex! I guess if I became a vamp I would have the same power as Fred. lol! I avoid eye contact, it freaks me out! =]

  8. Diego made Riley assist in the actual killing of Diego??

    did you mean Victoria?

  9. Umm I think its complete bull malarky that she just lets the interviews be run into the ground. If she really cared to discuss the “little details fans want to know” she should push them to the foreground of the conversation instead of letting the media trample all over and continue to discuss the “oh I saw this in a dream” aspect. FIGHT for your saga stephenie!

    • Catherine Elizabeth says:

Most mainstream media is only interested in the very thin layer of information. Which means shallow questions and shallow answers. Which is why I am sooo glad that Stephanie already posts so much on her site and offers opportunities for real fans of her series to listen the underlying stories. Marketing is about quick answers and a basic understanding to create a buzz.

      • Twilibrarian says:

I agree. The general media asks such inane questions of everyone: i.e.: Are you two a couple??? Even if they are, why would KS and RP tell the idiot media? Sure, all the fans want to know, but it’s really none of our business. Same goes for the stupid red carpet questions: “are you excited to be here?” No, I’d rather be home watching paint dry. Geez oh man. I know interviews are part of their job, but c’mon folks. Come up with some different questions. I’m just sayin’….

    • Twilight_News says:

Mainstream media doesn’t work like that. They dictate the content that they want. Unless you are at a Barabara Walters special or somethign like that, you have very little opportunity to do what you want with the luxury of time.

  10. Preciosa says:

A sequEl about renesmee and leah is for sure about jacob. Not interest in that… Thanks. I

  11. Thank you for that resume! :D

  12. Lorrainebow says:

Thanks guys for these highlights!!!! A story from Renesmee would be cool, it would be intersting to see how her mind works. A Leah story would
be awesome too. It always sounded like she would have a lot to look forward to.

    • Twilibrarian says:

Perhaps Midnight Sun could be Eward’s story told to Renesmee in flashbacks, kind of like the Princess Bride???

  13. I’d love a sequel about Renesmee and Jacob!

    • Harshi Abeysuriya says:

Yeah! I wish SM would write a book about Jacob and Nessie!

    • Harshi Abeysuriya says:

I can’t wait for the rest of the interview! Thankx for sharing!

    • Or Alice and the rest of the Cullens moving to search out the rest of her story…or did Edward send Carlisle to look for Fred to tell him things he should know? Bree did say he would be on that park bench waiting, and could Edward let him know there’s more to this vampire stuff, right? Will Fred join the Cullens? A new brother perhaps? Would be great for the next time the Volturi make their move…and there will be another move….stand by and stay tuned….so many branches Stephenie can take and I hope she takes them all!

  14. can´t wait to read all you asked her….

  15. Oh! I like that idea!

  16. Lucky!! I CAN NOT wait to read the whole thing!!!

  17. I am mad the “red head” question wasn’t asked. Why does bree refer him as such?

I am happy about the midnight sun news.

  18. I want to read Breaking Down.. She should write that. <3

  19. Great interview. I want to know why Bree refers to him as the Red Head because Bella said bronze all the time and even Carlise said Edward got that strange Bronze color from his mother and Renesmee has her Dads haircolor. So whats up with the Dark Red hair

  20. thefactis says:

I just hopes she write a sequel to the Host. Great Interview by the way and I want to read the Breaking Dawn parody. Sounds fun.

  21. There is HOPE for Midnight Sun!!! :D

  22. I say I have HOPE that Stephenie rewrites Breaking Dawn! =) Gee, my LEAST favorite book in the series. Damn!

    • I’m pretty sure that one is her baby, above all the others, so there is little to no chance of a rewrite. I really disliked that book, too, but it’s her world, her characters, so she is entitled to do what she wants with them.

    • TwilightinBigD says:

I can’t believe people are still upset about Breaking Dawn. It has been almost two years already. Let it go. When she did the Oprah show last year to promote New Moon and she had a back stage interview and she said that if she never write about the Twilight Saga again then she was very please how she ended it with Breaking Dawn and that she would write it the same exact way despite everything. She is the author and she ended it the way she wanted to. That is all that matters. She endured a lot of very nasty personal attacks behind this book. Some people were saying she must be on CRACK. People seem to forget that SM is not even 40 yet and look at what she has done already. Just let her be. Read the last Harry Potter book. I am sure you will be much happier with the outcome of that book.

    • I agree! I which she would rewrite the pregnancy make it be more normal , and Renesmee wont grow so fast and NO Jacob imprinting on Edward and Bella’s baby part…

  23. Breaking Dawn was my Least faorite book in the series ititially, but after reading it again at a calmer pace, it became my favorite, favorite, favorite. Here’s the thing tho’, its all one big long story…so long in fact it needed 4 books. I hated being in Jacobs head. My daughter loved being in Jacobs head, said it was refreshing. lol I’ve gotten off track reading all the comments, so here is mine finally….I loved Stephenies q & a session. It’s always great to hear her answer the real questions….

  24. switzy4ever14 says:

Thanks, Lex. The only part I cried for in Bree Tanner was the don’t watch line, because I thought it was so sad how Bree thought Edward was talking to her. It’s good to know he actually was.

Great interview, answered a lot of my questions.

  25. Well if Edward did know what Bree was thinking of him, and Aro did not know what Jane did, now Aro should know for he read every thought of Edwards in Breaking Dawn… He doesnt do anything with Jane… Is it just me asking for more…

  26. Magiclily says:

    wanna read breaking down xD
    lol

  27. Uh…who’s Fred? I haven’t really been keeping up with all the news, just a few things here and there.
Is he a new character in Eclipse movie or Bree’s short story?
