EW has a vampire theme going this week and Twilight has made the cover. According to EW:

“This week’s Entertainment Weekly delivers the ultimate guide to vampires. You’ll find interviews with the authors behind Twilight and True Blood, our list of the 20 greatest bloodsuckers ever, and Anne Rice’s pick for the best new vampire — as well as a talk with her about how she revolutionized the vampire legend decades ago with Interview with a Vampire.”

The article covers the current vampire craze and covers long-running favorites like Anne Rice and relative-newbies like True Blood. Other than Twilight, do you follow any vampire series, and if so which ones?

Cool, I follow the Undead series of books aswell by Mary Janice Dickinson, really funny!!!:D

  • raven555 says:

About to start on the House of Night series by P.C. Cast/Kristin Cast and will let you know how it goes. These two authors interest me because they are a mother/daughter team and my daughter and I are writing together too.

    • Joy says:

The House of Night series is really good! I’m on the fifth one.

    • House of Night is okay… I find that a lot of the characters are stereotypically expressed, I’m not very fond of the main character, and the writing style is a little hard to swallow — my friends and I agree that it takes a bit getting used to — but I really enjoy some of the characters and the cliffhangers are UGH! xD Can’t wait until the next one. It’s killing me. Overall, it’s not the kind of stuff I’d write with my mom. Then again, my mom is kind of old-fashioned…

    • Admittedly, I have never read Anne Rice or Bram Stoker… I feel bad saying that, but it doesn’t mean I won’t. Those are definitely two things I will pick up once I finish what’s already on my reading list. I love vampires, though. :D Buffy was pretty awesome. I had a huge thing for Angel. xD I have yet to read Anita Blake, but I’m madly in love with Laurell K. Hamilton faerie line, Meredith Gentry. Ummm… Totally love True Blood, though I have yet to read the books. I’m kind of keeping away from them at the moment because I know the tv series is straying further away from the original source material (or so I’ve read), and I don’t want to be too judgmental right now. xD I get like that. Watched Golden Compass, LOVED it, then read the books… I obviously love Twilight… OH! But I have also been reading Jennifer Armintrout’s “Blood Ties” series. It’s pretty good. I’ve only gotten to the beginning of the third one, so I’m not sure how many more there are… xD It’s really interesting to see how authors differ in their own interpretations of vampires. Wow… That was a ramble. I’m usually more structured than that. xD

      • I totally meant for that reply to be separate. I do that sometimes… Sorry. OH! But I forgot to add the possessive to Laurell K. Hamilton.

      • tina says:

okay so you seriously just totally read me mind, Cause all the books you’ve listed I have read. You neded to read her ENTIRE Anita Blake series, which I saw will soon be a TV show or a movie I can’t remember. This scares me cause its my number one favorite series ever and I don’t want them to ruin it. I havent tried her Merry Gentry series yet though but I heard it was pretty good.
Second favorite is Blood Ties series which I just finish it is also amazing, but unfortunately only a 4 book series. I haven’t started anything else yet but my friend tells me that the “Sonya blue” series is pretty good. I tried the Sookie Stackhouse series but I was done by the 4th book, the tv series IMO is much better

  • Susan says:

The Vampire Diaries and the Sookie Stackhouse books

  • Li says:

I actually got read Twilight because of the vampires, before that I was (and still am) a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and tons of other vampire movies/books. After reading Twilight I’ve read some of the House of Night books and seen true blood. Dunno which is my favorite vampire though, Angel, Edward and Spike are probably top 3 ;p

  • April says:

I alsp have read the House of Night Series! I really like it! It was something else to read after i had read the Twilight Series over 10+ times. I couldn’t put these books down either and am anxious for the next one to come out in November! I suggest it those who like the Twilight books!

  • Amanda says:

Love watching True Blood, want to read the books sometime soon. Started the House of Night series, but wasn’t really impressed by the first, so I haven’t been able to make it beyond that yet..

  • Sabrina/Bloodnoir says:

Laurell K Hamilton’s Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series is my all time fave, but I’m loyal to many others…Kim Harrison’s Rachel Morgan (though she’s a witch there’s plenty of vampy and Fae goodness) Vampire Diaries, Vampire Kisses, Christine Feehan’s Dark series (yummy good carpatians…the bad ones are called vampires) Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters series, Bram Stoker, and of course, Anne Rice!
For tv: Dark Shadows (hear Johnny Depp’s doing a remake whoo hoo!) Buffy, Angel, Moonlight.
No True Blood…tried it couldn’t get into it. And same goes for the books.
    Cheers!
    Sabrina

  • katy says:

def suggest Buffy the Vampire SLayer and Angel if you have a lot of free time on ur hands! i also just finished watching a series called Moonlight. it was really good but it only lasted one season!

  • Miss Miriam says:

Sookie Stackhouse series – Charlaine Harris (9 books)
House of Night – P.C./Kristin Cast (5 books)
Vampire Academy – Richelle Mead (great books, 4th book comes out on Aug. 25th)
The Mortal Instruments series – can’t remember author (currently lending out the books) but first book is called “City of Bones.” Only some vampires in this series but S. Meyer’s has a recommendation on it. (3 books)

  • Caitlin says:

i also read the House of Night Series by Pc and Kristin Cast and Vampire Diaries and Night World by LJ Smith

  • Becky says:

I love Charlaine Harris’s books. She’s the author behind TV’s True Blood. Though the books and show are DEFINITELY not for teens.

  • Dena says:

I like the House of Night series too, but my fav after twilight of course is the Sookie Stackhouse books. I like True Blood, but don’t judge the book by the show. The books are a lot better. You guys should try a book called Evermore by Alyson Noel. The love story is like Twilight, but it’s about an immortal. It’s good, but it’s not Twilight. Not even close.

    • kehacakes says:

I read Evermore. I liked it okay, just finished the sequel blue moon. It was not that great. I noticed in Evermore there were a few , in my opinion, jabs at Twilight, and vampire books in general. Maybe it was just me. But I kinda felt like it was a coattail series, even though it was about immortals, not vampires. Then for the second one to be called Blue moon (gee, kinda like new moon)I don’t know, that’s just the vibe I got. Did anyone else that read it feel the same way?

  • Lanie says:

ya sookie stackhouse books are definitely for adults. i started reading them lately. i dont have hbo so i figured i’ll just read the book and see the show when i can

  • Lou says:

I think it’s time for there to be a new picture of Rob as Edward. One where he actually looks like a hot vampire.

  • Danielle says:

NightWorld theres 3 books, their about vampires withes, and werewolves, shapeshifters! The Cool Vamps, in that are James, (lamia born vampire, that ages, but can stop its aging whenever they want) Quinn (made vampire- stays the age that he is once he was turned.) Morgead,(lamia) Jez (half human/ half vampire). These are only some of the cool vamps in the books.. Read them you’ll like them.

  • Jenna says:

I tried House of Night, but it was AWFUL. I’ve also read Evernight, and that one was really good!
    Other vampires…scare me.

  • Meghan O says:

I just finished reading the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. I liked it so I’m looking forward to reading the other books. I’ve just started reading the House of Night series and so far I really like it. They’re all very different types of vampires and that makes them fun to read!

  • bella1976 says:

I READ THE VAMPIRE KISSES SERIES AND I LOVED IT. HOUSE OF NIGHT SERIES IS OK , I JUST HATE HOW THE AUTHORS FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE TO KILL READING SPACE BY REPEATING STUFF WE KNOW ABOUT THE CHARACTERS OVER AND OVER ONCE YOU READ THEM YOU’LL SEE WHAT I MEAN. I LOVE THE CHARLAINE HARRIS SOOKIE STACKHOUSE SERIES AMAZING! I ONLY READ THE FIRST THREE
THE VAMPIRE DIARIES AND LIKED THE STORY, OH I KIND OF LIKE DAMON BETTER CAN’T WAIT FOR THE SHOW ON THE CW NET IN SEPT. FINALLY I CAME ACROSS A GREAT STORY BY PATRICIA BRIGGS THE MERCY THOMPSON SERIES IS BEYOND AMAIZING!!!!!!!!

    • Miss Miriam says:

I love the Mercy Thompson series too. In fact the mother of one of student’s told me about it. I got her hooked on Twilight so it was fair game for her to turn me on to something. I haven’t read it yet but ther is a book related to the series from the werewolves point of view.

  • yorokobi says:

Vamps have always been “sucked” me in if you will ;) I watch True Blood, haven’t read any books though. I read some Dark Hunter books. Evermore is good(it’s not vampires like was said previously). The second book Blue Moon is out now too. Moonlight was sappy but I enjoyed it. Buffy, Underworld, Interview with an Vampire, etc. I always fine myself “glamoured!”

  • Avery says:

I read the Vampire Diaries, mainly because they are making a TV show out of it and I figured the books had to be pretty good to warrent a tv show
They were all right… nothing anything close to twilight…

  • Lezlee says:

After reading Twilight, I was hooked! I couldn’t get enough of the vampire genre. I read The Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward (really good, but for adults only). I also read Night World by L.J. Smith and absolutely loved it! Vampire Diaries is not as good, but I am looking forward to the CW show starting in the fall, based on the L.J. Smith series. My least favorite of the series’ that I have read was Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels. I do not enjoy Harris’ writing style. however, I adore True Blood as it is adapted in the HBO show. So, my favorite vampires are, Edward Cullen, Eric Northman (of the show True Blood) and Butch (from The Black Dagger Brotherhood).

    • Mcgeeis4 says:

Rock on with the Brothers. I love them all and I’m on the Lover Avenged. I don’t think I could pick a favorite out of them, they are all special in their own way.

    • Sabrina/Bloodnoir says:

I agree with you about the Sookie books and Charlaine’s writing style. Sounds like we’re in the minority though. I only caught 2 episodes of True Blood and just couldn’t get into it, but again, I think it’s due to how I feel about the book series it was adapted from.

    • morgan says:

definitely agree with everything that you said. it’s funny. we have the same type of reading style.

and z is by far my favorite brother!

    • KL says:

Love the Brotherhood books! I thought no one was going to comment about them on this thread

  • Samantha says:

I have read all of Anne Rice’s vampire based novels. I am currently reading the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris, The House of Night by PC and Kristin Cast and The Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward (adult series). I have also read another adult series but I don’t remember the name.

  • Despina says:

I’ve always been scared of vampires, ever since I saw my first vampire film when I was about 4 or 5 (my mum’s fault… she liked those kind of films)
Vampires were my recurring childhood nightmare, and I occasionally had nightmares about being hunted by vampires until I actually read Twilight… some friends had assured me Twilight wasn’t really scary, so I started reading the series and I liked it a lot. But apart from Twilight, no more vampires, thank you very much!!!

  • Lily Cullen says:

I loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer (even though I was terrified of vampires at the time). I read The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice to get over my fear. I love Lestat! Years Later I moved on to Twilight. I’m writing a book series now with a vampire. I haven’t read any other vampire books though. I don’t like reading similar books back-to-back. (I’ve moved on to Faeries – apparently they can be interesting, who would have thought! I just finished the Wicked Lovely series. Has anyone read it? It’s amazing!)

  • pinky says:

I have read tons of Vampire, Fairy, Witch, etc. Anne Rice was the first vamp books I read and I love them. Im reading the Evernight series also. I have read all the Sookie Stackhouse Series to date and they are much better than the show!!! I have not read the House of Night yet…I recently finished the The Mortal Instrument series..I cant wait to see what Stephenie writes next!!

  • Serena Welles says:

Hmm… the cover looks pretty good. ^_^ I just may buy that one.

I have read the Vampire Diaries and the Night World series, both by L.J. Smith. I have yet to read any of Anne Rice’s books though and it saddens me. =(

I used to watch True Blood when I had HBO, but now that I don’t, I don’t watch it anymore. ^^; I know I can watch it elsewhere, but I’m too lazy…

  • Rae says:

The only other vampire book I like besides Twilight is a book called Sunshine by Robin McKinley. It’s really excellent, I highly recommend it though like all of McKinely’s books, the romance is really subtle, so if you only like books where you’re slammed in the face by romance(twilight ^_^) it might be a little frustrating.

  • AliceKikiCullen says:

I don’t really like Vampires that much. :P I love twilight they are more my style, moral who wish not to be monsters…that’s more my thing. Though my b.b.f bought me all of Anne Rice’s book but I keep putting off reading them and just re-read twilight. ;) Ive watched True blood it’s cool, alittle too much foul langune for me but still insterting makes up for my Buffy gap. Lol. I am more of a witches/wizards/dragons fansty girl. Twilight is one of the few expetions.

  • Rocio says:

wow, reading all of your comments, I´m thinking i´m so behind all of this… Never knew there was so much to read about.
    Thanks for the great advice!
    Ro :)

  • Darkrider says:

I follow the Sookie Stackhouse series(aka TrueBLood) by Charlajne Harris as well as Sherrilyn Kenyons Dark-Hunter series.

  • Jennifer says:

I started reading Anne Rice YEARS ago. However, I could never get past the first chapter of Queen of the Damned, so I stopped reading her.

The ONLY ONLY ONLY reason I picked up Twilight series was because two VERY trusted friends told me they liked it and thought it was good. Otherwise, I honestly probably would never have read it – too much hype and I tend to rebel against over-hyped trends. pfffftttt….obviously I LOVE Twilight now. Part of me wishes I had picked them up earlier and part of me is glad I waited so I could read them all one right after the other. It would have absolutely KILLED me to wait for each new release. I started reading the Harry Potter series roughly six months before the release of Deathly Hallows and let me tell you…I speak from experience on the “kill me to wait thing.” I am not a patient person. :)

    • Jennifer says:

Oh, and…I have not picked up any other vampire books. I think I would compare it too much to Stephenie Meyer’s vampire universe and would not be able to truly read it and enjoy it for what it is. We’ll see if one of my trusted friends refers one. I know the other trusted friend will not because she is the same way I am: she will not pick up another vampire series (or even The Host) because she does not want to risk Bella and Edward losing their #1 position in her heart. :: grin :: I’m not as bad: I HAVE read The Host (twice [and LOVE it!!!]).

  • ~t~ says:

i dont really like any other vampire stuff than twilght i mean its nothing personal or anything but it kinda bugs me how now that twilight is so popular everybody is like omg lets make a vampire tv show and a vampire book series! oh well thats just my opinion

    • Jennifer says:

AMEN! Everyone is jumping on the vampire bandwagon!!!

    • Kim says:

I agree. I nearly didn’t read Twilight because of all the hype. Vampires just aren’t my thing in general. Twilight is a major exception to the books I typically enjoy so I doubt I’ll immerse myself in the vampire genre.

    • Elizabeth says:

I agree. I haven’t caught on with any of the other young adult vampire novels out there, and I never bothered to watch any of the television series that are popping up all over.
For me, it’s just Twilight and Buffy- Buffy, Buffy, Buffy.
But this craze has gone wild- even Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are catching on. Burton’s going to make a “Dark Shadows” flick, which was originally a vampire soap opera back in the 70s. Depp, of course, will be playing the lead vamp, because he and Burton are connected at the hip. Hahaha- I’m hoping it’ll turn out well.

      • tndpappas says:

I was never into the “vampire” genre. I read The Host first, like Meyer’s style so much, but avoided the Twilight series because they WERE about vampires until my friend told me “It’s not what you think.” And she was right. Twilight caught me because of the struggle for Edward/the Cullens to not give in to their nature. Their love for each other. The willingness for all the characters to make sacrifices, to die for one another, to fight for one another. And yet maintain their integrity. The movie captures that to a degree, but obviously not as well as the book. However, one does not love the Twilight books because of vampires, one loves the books because of the love that is portrayed amongst the characters.

  • Kathleen loves vamps says:

Yum vampire bill and Edward all on the same page :) Yummy :)

  • Trina says:

I’ve read the House of Night series and am reading the Sookie Stackhouse series now. I watch True Blood (based on the Sookie S novels).

To those of you claiming these other series have jumped off the Twilight bandwagon… they have been around much longer than Twilight. Twilight is just the catalyst that sparked the popularity.

Frankly, I’m glad it did, because I would have otherwise overlooked some other great books.

    • Heather says:

I agree!! I’m a die-hard Twilight Fan and these were the first “vampire” books I’ve read, but it certainly opened a door into a whole ‘nother world of books, many of which have been around as long as, if not longer than Twilight.
      Here’s some of my favorites:
Night Huntress series – Jeanine Frost (adult, but VERY good – new one just came out!)
Black Dagger Brotherhood – JR Ward (adult)
Mercy Thompson series – Patricia Briggs (lots of fun)
Vampire Academy – Richelle Mead (Young Adult)
House of Night – PC/Kristen Cast (Young Adult)
I love the True Blood series but can’t get into the books for some reason.

      • kehacakes says:

i guess I’m old enough to have seen vampires come and go in popularity that I don’t really see it as people jumping on a bandwagon. I have seen Vampire shows come and go over the years, I remember when the Interview with a Vampire movie was coming out and it was a big secret what Tom Cruise was going to look like. I also used to be a huge fan of The Lost Boys. I think every generation has had a vampire based show or movie, and book series. Twilight is just so much bigger, because the story reaches so many more people, even people who don’t normally like vampires. I think the first show I ever saw that was Vampire based, was Dark Shadows. I used to love that. I was young and it seemed so scary. Barnabus was freaky! I can’t wait to see Depp in the movie. That will be awesome.

      • Zookie Monster says:

Vampire Academy? Yuuuuuuuuuuuuucky lol. I liked the characters, just not the plotline, or how a 17-year-old girl was in love with her tutor o.O Underage much? haha

  • teamjazzy says:

normally, i wouldn’t like any other vmapire series books, but my friend made me read the house of night series and i LOVE it!! im on the fifth and its sooooo awesome! twilight is still better, nothing had, has, or will ever beat that!!

  • The Twilight Series has honestly been the only series about vampires that I’ve been interested in. I’m a huge chicken, and I’ve always been too afraid of anything involving “blood suckers”. But Twilight took a different spin on it, and now I’m hooked!

  • ILoveAliceCullen says:

Well, Twilight will be my vampire-love forever, but I’ve a book from Buffy (it’s in my language: Dutch) and I’d really LOVE to read House of Night.

But that serie of books isn’t here to buy. It’s so annoying and frustrating and UNFAIR. I wanna read it, I heard it was good.

I watched Moonlight, about Mick St. John. That was pretty amazing, loved it!

But, Twilight allllllll the way. (L)

  • Stephanie says:

It’s been said, I’m sure, but I practically grew up with Buffy and the gang. That definitely got me started on the whole vampire obsession; I loved her and Angel together. *sigh*
The Twilight Saga trumps all the rest in my opinion, just because the mythology is so different from anything else.
I’ve also read all the current Vampire Diaries books, which are awesome, and am looking forward to the show based on the series on The CW in the fall.
And I see from most of the comments that The House of Night books is good, so maybe I’ll give them a try.
My mom and I really enjoyed Moonlight when it was on, and were so sad when it got cancelled. But we still watch reruns on SyFy.

  • Mcgeeis4 says:

I’m so hooked on the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I wish it would come out in a movie or series. Yes, it a little adult but with great adventures and characters, J.R. Ward is a great writer.

I love True Blood but like a few others don’t like the books.
I have enjoyed the Vampire Kisses too; nice quick read like the Twilight series.

But for the P.C. Cast series, didn’t like. I’m from the Tulsa area and with the whole Cherokee spirit cramp it was tasteless.

  • KJ says:

I’ve tried reading other vampire books besides Twilight, but they just don’t interest me. I think I like Twilight because their aren’t any coffins or wooden stakes involved, and it isn’t the typical “I vant to suck you blood” kind of story. Stephenie Meyer made up her own rules, and that’s what makes me like Twilight far more than other vamp novels.

  • mschicklet says:

I hate that they’re reusing an old pic of Rob for this…. I KNOW they have newer Edward pics. Looks so unprofessional.

  • Kellsey says:

    BEING HUMAN ON BBC…ITS AMAZINGG

  • caravsangel says:

Very cool… I’ll be trying to find a copy of this!
My husband and I read Twlight and the Southern Vampire Mysteries (AKA Sookie Stackhouse books). I have also started reading Michael Romkey’s series (which starts with “I, Vampire”), and plan on soon reading Lynsay Sands series and Laurell K. Hamilton’s series. And I am writing my own.

  • VampireReader says:

I’ve tried reading lots of different vampire series, but only two others have really caught my attention so far.
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead and
Morganville Vampires series by Rachel Caine
Also watched and loved Moonlight and was terribly upset that it was only one season.

  • Evie LePelley says:

i actually grew up with The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice..lol..showing my age..after that i was hooked on Vampires. Im actually NOT a Lestat fan. It’s all about Louis for me. Anyhoo, someone told me you gotta check out the Twilight Series..been hooked ever since..i actually have not read any of the Vampire Diaries books..now is that like twilight more centered on high school kids?? are those books the basis for that new show on CW??

  • caravsangel says:

Along the lines of what Trina said… very few of the modern vampire stories have anything to do with Twilight. Many of them predate Twilight by quite a few years. Even TV shows like True Blood, if you look at when it was released (not long after Twilight finished filming) you know it was being created long before the Twilight boom. Even my book I started writing 8 months before I’d ever heard of Stephenie Meyer or Twilight.
Most Twilight fans are too young to know or remember, but this is not the first boom is vampire popularity… like in the early 90s when Interview with a Vampire came out. Vampires have always been popular among certain groups, and vampire book series have been written for decades. This is just the first one to appeal to such a wide range of fans because it diverts so much from classic vampire lore.

  • channy says:

I love Twilight of course. I love the True Blood HBO series, I really need to read the books. And of course, who doesn’t love Buffy :]

  • Monika says:

I like the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, and Salem’s Lot by Stephen King. Obviously I absolutely adore Twilight. Sookie Stackhouse books…not so much. I thought most of the characters were really annoying. I’ve loved vampire stories since I was a kind. Bram Stoker wrote the best monster-vampire not the lover we all know as Edward Cullen. I liked Evernight and Stargazer. They are fun books to read. Right now I am on City of Bones. Simon tries way too hard.
I am OBER VERY VERY VERY, ETC… excited for Dark Shadows to be remade. My parents had us addicted to it by the time I was seven! Tim Burton and Johnny Depp as Barnabis Collins!….OH I am so there!

  • Michelle Larsen says:

I LOVE the Twilight Saga. I also enjoyed watching the TV series of Moonlight and was devestated when it was cancelled.

  • HopefulInTucson says:

Anne Rice had a great series way back. Very detailed so if you are someone who likes the detail, the history etc her series would be enjoyable.
