Twilight Goes Manga
Posted by Twilight_News - 15/07/09 at 12:07 pm
The Entertainment Weekly got the exclusive on the new Twilight Saga Manga (we’ve been asked not to embed their exclusive photo so we are compiling.)
EW.com has exclusive sketches online and this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly (which is the annual Comic-Con preview issue) has the finished illustrations of Edward, Bella, and Jacob. The sketches don’t look simply like an artist’s rendering of Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson, but are true to the novel’s descriptions. Yen Press, a division of Hachette Book Group (the parent company of Little Brown that publishes The Twilight Saga), is publishing this venture.
“For those of you who can’t get enough Edward and Bella, EW can announce — exclusively — that Yen Press will be publishing Twilight in graphic-novel form. Though Korean artist Young Kim is creating the art, Meyer herself is deeply immersed in the project, reviewing every panel.”
The Lexicon asked a spokesperson for Stephenie Meyer when the novel would be release and we were told the following: “A publication date for Twilight: The Graphic Novel will be forthcoming.” So hang on, as soon as we know, you’ll know!
Get the full details of the Twilight Manga on EW. So, how about it Manga fans, how many of you are interested in this, or for that matter, Manga newbies, are you interested?

I think this is such a great idea. AND I LOVE MANGAS AND I CAN’T WAIT FOR IT !!!
It’s about time! This idea has been out there forever.
I am glad that this project is finally happening.
MANGAS ARE AWESOME!!!! I so cannot wait!!! <3
Well, I have to say this isnt manga, it’s manwa, considering the artist isn’t Japanese. I believe that term is more fitting, though it’s probably also a totally made up term to refer to things LIKE manga, but neither from Japan or by a Japanese person.
That aside, I don’t know if I’ll be collecting this… I mean, unless it’s going to take the story and expand on it.
Manwa is a term used to refer to Korean manga. which as this is going to be illustrated by a Korean, its probably appropriate.
Does it really matter whether it’s called a Manga or Manwa?
Just because it’s not Japanese it’s not a Manga? So what do you call a Graphic Novel done in the style of the Japanese Manga, but the artist is American or European?
What is a Graphic Novel called when the artist is Chinese.
To me, I determine Manga by Style, not the culture in which the artist is from.
Manga or Manwa. It’s the same to me.
I believe they used the Term Manga because it’s more Commonly used and more uniserily recognizable.
It’s like saying Anime
Color is Colour
Sweet!!! I’d definetly get them! I’m a huge manga/anime fan ^_^
Rob is going to be on Ellens show this morning. Thought I’d let you all know!
It’s a rerun….2008
As someone just started to get into graphic novels and huge love of Twilight of course I can’t wait for this!
YES! i can’t wait to see what their interpretation of what the characters look like. >_<
YES! YES! YES!!! I grew up on anime and love the manga artwork. When I started reading the books about a month and a half ago–finished them and started to read them again–I told my friends at work, “You know… I already know I’m a total nerd for saying this… But Twilight would make such a GREAT manga/anime!” Yeah, they laughed at me, but does this news make me happy??? You have no idea! SQUEEE!!!
I don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble, but this was done for the Odd Thomas series (In Odd We Trust). I loved the books in the Odd Thomas saga but this illustrated on was simply TERRIBLE!!
I´m really not a huge manga fan, but since Steph´s going to review the panels, I think it´ll show her visualisions of Bells and Edward and I cant´wait to see that!
i caant wait for this! hopefully tthe manga will correct what the movie was off on. hopeflly i will finally get the meadow! will manga play off movie or book?
I dont like manga….but kudos to the ones who do!
Manga is not especially my thing, but again, if it gets people reading, I’m for it.
I will of course be buying a copy.
Okay, I must be living under a rock. What is Manga?
LOL I thought I was the only one who didn’t know what this is!
Manga is a term for Japanese (or sometimes just Asian) comics. In America, it’s a strict genre that separates American and Asian comics, but in Japan, the word manga is the broad category for comic books.
And that was incredibly redundant, but I felt like covering all of my bases.
Thank you for explaining that!!
Not bad! I like the illustrations that they have! They don’t look like Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson which I think is great! Not that I have anything against them…
Very awesome. This has been a long time coming and I am SO excited!
I was a little reserved in looking at it at first, not sure if I’d like what I saw, and i’m not overly big on Manga (not because I have anything against it, but because I just haven’t ever really explored it) and I didn’t want to jar my own imaging of the story… but I actually like this! I’m surprised just how much i love the picture of Edward! Not too sure about Bella yet, I’d have to see another picture of her… and I can’t wait to see the rest of the Cullens!!!
LOVE the concept but the illustrations in my opinion are terrible… They are not anywhere close to what I saw when I was reading the novels nor to the characters in the movie.. In my opinon? Two Thumbs down…
Oh I forgot to add that they are Way to anime for my liking as well…
To SugarGiggles:
Just because a manga isn’t Japanese, that does not mean that it’s not manga. To quote Dramacon (perhaps the most awesome non-Japanese manga ever): “Is pizza only pizza if it’s made in Italy by an Italian?”
The same concept applies here- it’s great to love manga, but don’t be a snob.
On topic- YAY TWILIGHT MANGA!!!!!
Oh, and to Desiree- that’s the whole point of manga. To look “way too anime” as you put it, because surprise, anime is based off of manga.
Oh and one more thing (for those who know what I’m talking about):
EDWARD WILL FINALLY HAVE REAL SHOJO SPARKLES!!!
That was totally what I imagined when I first read the book. ^_^
I have kind of a Field of Dreams attitude about Twilight, a sort of “if you build it, they will come” thing going on. As long as it’s supported by Stephenie I’ll go for it. I liked graphic novels when I was….not the age I am now, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy another adaptation. I’m loving the fact that Stephenie is going over it pane by pane. That’s awesome. I look forward to it’s release.
I love the sneak peek pic. The art is very clean and pretty. I think this is a great idea. It will hopefully be a bridge to introduce new people to the beautiful stories that exist in manga/graphic novel forms.
FINALLY!!! yay cant wait!!
Will this be the Movie version or Book version? I am assuming the book version will come to life , hopefully?
OH MY GOD!!! This is awesome!!! I can’t wait for this!
Sounds great and looks like everyone here is really excited about it. The downfall that I see is that, as long as Stephenie continues to work on the Twilight Saga, Stephenie will not have time to write another book. I personally would love to see something new from her, can’t wait for her next novel, and will even order in advance no matter the topic.
omg soo excited!
that idea is juat brilliant i cant wait!
I LOVE manga and I’m so excited for it!
It seems interesting.
Wooooo!!!! manga rules!!!!!
I think this is a great idea because Twilight always came across to me as a typical shojo manga story.
OF COURSE I’ll like it! I was waiting for this to happen! And I knew it would, because manga is a lot more popular then it seems in America, and maybe this will open the doors to more opportunities! I can’t wait and I’m DEFINITElY buying this! (& and the EW Mag I might add)
Bella and Edward on the manga drawing look just like any typical manga couple 8/ Very young and very pretty. But nothing original. And those Bella’s ruffles… She is american teenager, she wears tshirts and jeans, not a jabot blouse! I cant see any character in that drawing. But, of course, it’s just one drawing. Maybe it will get better.
For me, it would be great, if the artist portrayed Kristen and Rob – we would all know, who it is, because they have very characteristic features – and it’s always interesting to see, how a person we know looks as a manga cartoon
I’ve never read a Graphinc novel before, so maybe this will be my first one to read. Does anyone know when and where i can get this?
is it a graphic novel or manga?
Eh, not really my thing… so I don’t think I’ll be buying a copy
well technicaly if it is being drawn by a Korean artist in korean style it is called a manhwa… so its not a manga wich is a japanese graphic novel. i kno im a picky litle dork… but i just wanted to put this out there!!!!
Before being a Twilighter, I admit to being an otaku first. So let me just say that there is a slight difference between a manga and a manhwa. Manga are from Japan and are of course read from left to right. Manhwa are Korean comics that are read from left to right, but can also be read the English way. (Most of the manga I’ve seen are usually in the Japanese form and the manhwa are in the English way *shrug*). Even though manhwa has usually been advertised as manga, I wish people would know the different at least. It’s like a cartoon and anime. There is a difference.
Anyway, I don’t know whether to be excited or upset over the news. I think the art looks clean, unlike other manga and manhwa I don’t even bother picking up because the art annoys me. And since the creator is consulting with Stephenie Meyer about it then I don’t see a problem. I just hope the rest of it lives up to the preview. I also like the fact that it doesn’t look like the actors. That’s a plus, not that I have anything against them. ^_~ I wish the artist of it the best of luck. ^^
I have a question though. Will it be read from right to left or left to right?
Woah, I cannot wait for this manhwa to come out ^^
Yay, so excited~!
Well, being a huge manga fan myself, I have to point out to you that it would not be a Twilight manga, it would be a Twilight MANHWA. A manga is a Japanese comic, and a manhwa is a Korean comic. Just needed to clear that misconception up.
I’ll sue if it’s not better than the books.
Though almost ANYTHING would be better.
Plus, manga, manhwa, it doesn’t matter. Just because pizza’s made by an American doesn’t mean it’s not pizza. Same concept. My friend writes mangas and she’s Italian. Besides, it’s not even manga. It’s a graphic novel. =) yayz!!!
Bella doesn’t look like Bella. She looks almost…blonde…in the pic (though there’s no way of being certain). Edward looks okay.
But where did the t-shirts and sweaters go?!?
“THOUGH Korean artist Young Kim is creating the art, Meyer herself is deeply immersed in the project”? That sounds like they’re blowing Kim off!
I’ve had a hope that they’d make the book into a manga for a while, never thought it would happen though and I’m extremely happy that they’re turning it into a manga. I’ve been a huge manga fan for several years so this will be a great addition to my collection
Can’t wait to see Edward.
Unless it’s expanding the story, It’s not worth the money. Twilight is fine as a novel. It doesn’t need the story retold again in a manwa form.
