Today marks the six year anniversary of the dream that sparked Twilight. From there is was another year and a half until the books started to reach shelves in fall 2005. Can you believe this all started six years ago?
” I know the exact date that I began writing Twilight, because it was also the first day of swim lessons for my kids. So I can say with certainty that it all started on June 2, 2003. Up to this point, I had not written anything besides a few chapters (of other stories) that I never got very far on, and nothing at all since the birth of my first son, six years earlier.
I woke up (on that June 2nd) from a very vivid dream. In my dream, two people were having an intense conversation in a meadow in the woods. One of these people was just your average girl. The other person was fantastically beautiful, sparkly, and a vampire. They were discussing the difficulties inherent in the facts that A) they were falling in love with each other while B) the vampire was particularly attracted to the scent of her blood, and was having a difficult time restraining himself from killing her immediately. For what is essentially a transcript of my dream, please see Chapter 13 (“Confessions”) of the book.”

Stephanie, We’re sooo glad you had this dream and felt compelled to write it all down…and that your sister kind of made you get it published! We’re so grateful
Stephenie had a dream that day.
She had a dream that one day, Bella would almost be hit by a car. That Edward would fall in love with her and then they’d make a baby. And then that Jacob would fall in love with that baby.
XD lol
Thanks Stephanie for publishing the Twilight series. They’re amazing, but they leave you wanting, say…another book? I’ll even settle for the finished product of Midnight Sun!
Stephenie! Congrats on six years! Your sister is a gift for pushing you to continue! You are a gift for your dreams! This series is just wonderful and I do hope you continue your Edward work. Don’t let them keep you down! Lots of love from Glendale, AZ!
I totally agree, I love all the books and I’m totally hooked to it. Having read it for what felt like a million times.
It was sad that Midnight Sun’s partial draft was leaked. Until it is published, we would all patiently wait for the day Stephenie. Thanks for everything.
yay finally some actual BOOK news
great dream Stephenie…thanks for sharing
I am very greatful for Stephenie. Her dream and the Twilight Saga has completely changed me life. You are a huge inspiration to me. Thanks Stephenie and congrats on six years!!!!!!
I am so in love with the saga!!!!
I have always loved that story, everytime I lend the book out, I have a copy of it tucked into the back of the book. The reader always asks for more.
I then direct them to the Lexi and your web site,
happy 6th anniversary. We love you Stephenie….
looking forward to more, more, more! You’ve created real monsters! Us-we can’t get enough.
oh and yeah…i can’t believe it’s been six years…i’ve known about this for about 6 months and I am hopelessely lost in all things twilight related…first, i saw the movie, later i found out about the books…bought the books, read them all about 2 or 3 times each…and i was amazed to find out how big everything was…the disadvantages of living in Romania…we find out about all the good stuff later than everyone else
Stephenie, your dream led to a new dimension in many people’s lives. Thank you for sharing it with us. You created a whole world in which we can escape, and I thank you every day for that!
WOW!!! 6 years?? really??? 4 me it’s like the time has stoped… unbelievable!!! This books really has changed my life -let me explain plz-. When I got the 1st glimpse of Twilight I was in Spain (summer 2006),I was intrigued by the cover & the book was in spanish of course… I stopped @ summary, u know I don’t have patience 4 high school flicks, but then, I got so curious & started to read the book… OMFG!!! There’s my very begining!!! I’m Brazilian, & in that time my English was far worse the only language I spoke fluently was Spanish (apart of my Portuguese). I wanted to read the book in the original version, so I worked so hard. Self study, Language Tutor, English course @ British Council… all that was worth it, I had so much fun, made a lot of new friends, got my college acceptance & a job promotion… So, I owe SM very much, not only 4 an amazing book, but 4 gave me inspirations enough to keep going on my studies.
I love how everything started from a dream. It’s the whole reason Twilight exists and they ruined this scene in the movie. total disappointment.
As I’ve said before I thank the heavens that Stephenie had this dream and brought all these wonderful characters to life for us. It’s been a long time since I’ve been so enamored with a book, let alone a series. Kudos to Stephenie and all those who supported her writing and helped in getting the books published so that we could all enjoy this beautiful story.
6 YEARS WOW!! Thank you Stephenie.M. so much for these books they are amazing! Im also a Potter fan and thought they were my favorite books,BUT now its move over Harry here is EDWARD!! The Twilight saga is my FAVORITE now (sorry harry)
I sound greedy but I need more Twilight!!PLEASE!!
THANKS AGAIN SM!
6 years and going on strong!
I SOOOOO grateful Stephenie chose to publish and was able to share her world with us; not just Twilight, but The Host as well. I cannot wait until she publishes her next great work!
THANK YOU STEPHENIE!!!! I have only started reading the books about 4 months ago, but I am a fell in love with them. I have read them all 13 times and keep going back again and again. They still make me laugh and cry. My kids think I have gone nuts, but it’s nice to have something for myself for a change. They have figured out buying presents is a piece of cake now. Thanks again and please write more TWILIGHT!!!!
Actually, it’s kind of amazing that so much has happened in such a short amount of time. I mean, comparatively, it took 17 years from when JKR first got the idea for Harry Potter to when the last book came out, and if you want to include the movies, it’s 19 years, and still going.
Twilight, its only been six years, and only 2 movies to go. (since New Moon is coming out this year.) 4 books in 5 years, as a rate is a lot faster than 7 books in 17 years. I’m sure that Stephenie would agree that this all happened very fast.
Thank you Stephanie for sharing this dream with us. These stories have given me something to look forward to. I haven’t been this excited about anything literary in a very long time. I didn’t know when I saw the movie back in November that this was a book series. For Christmas I asked for the series and haven’t been able to put them down ever since. I hope that the future may bring a finsihed version of Midnight Sun and maybe a story or two about Jacob and Renesme? (Fingers crossed!)
Stephenie congrats on the anniversary! I think my family is worried about my mental health. I keep reading the series over and over. That has never happened with any other books I’ve read, can’t get enough. By the way I know people are having a hard time understanding why Bella falls apart when Edward leaves, but gotta say I totally get it. I don’t see how anyone can miss it. When I read that scene in the forest I felt like I had been kicked it the gut myself. love your books
how can they not get it?! I thought everybody felt her pain reading those pages…I guess I was wrong…
Yeah I know! Its written so well that when Edward leaves YOUR the one left feeling sick and really upset its sounds crazy but it so true! I still cry when reading NM ( reading it for 7th time)AND to make things worst I cried watching the trailer to!
Hi; Stephenie Meyer.congrats on your (6) year anniversary of the dream of “The Twilight Saga”. Thank you; this has changed my life & many others.
Thanks and congratulations of a perfect dream and the good books that you turned your dream to! I hope you’ll continue the Twilight saga with new books. Perhaps, Midnight Sun? I would love to hear the story from Edward’s point of view. I really wish you’ll finish it (so I can read it in Finnish). Otherwise it will never be translated to other languages. And that is not fair for your fans abroad, is it?
I’m stuck to read four books over and over again(for variation I have them both in Finnish and in English, so it’s almost like reading 7 books, and 8 after BD will be published in Finnish). I wouldn’t mind of new book continuing the story! So I wish you a lot of happy writing days! And thank you SM again for the good books that you filled with love and emotions!
I BET THAT ALL YOU TWI-FANS ALREADY KNOW THIS (I HAVE FOR AGES) BUT IF YOU GO TO STEPHENIE.M. OFFICAL WEBSITE AND GO TO THE TWILIGHT SERIES PART AND CLICK ON TWILIGHT OR NM AND THEN GO TO THE EXTRAS AND OUTAKES THERE ARE SOME PDF PAGES OF EXTRA BITS OF THE BOOKS(THAT WAS CUT OUT) THAT SM HAS PUT FOR US TO READ! THERE IS SOME REALLY COOL BITS THAT WAS CUT! I LOVED READING THESE EXTRAS AND SM IS GREAT FOR SHARING THEM WITH US…
Just wanted to say to you Stephenie the same things everyone else is saying “Thank you ” for sharing your writings with us and we all do enjoy the fantasy world that you had created for your fans. Its so much fun to get lost into the worlds of Edward , Bella and Jacob. Your dreams must be amazing at times. Please keep writing about Nessie and Jacob…Jacob deserves this. He is to wonderful of a character not to give him his adventure as well with the girl of his dreams.
what an incredible woman; a mum and an author! and because of her there are hundreds of thousands of people who love her work which i think is genious. A personal thank you to you Stephenie for creating this indulgance i now have
I have lost count how many times i have read the series and my family also think i have lost it
and i also cried at the trailor
Stephenie, I’m so happy you wrote these wonderful books. I heard about you, as I’m in my 50′s, from my niece wanting to visit Forks when she came to Seattle to see me. Thinking that was a strange request, I told her fine. Little did I know that your books were the reason. OMGoodness, I thought she was so silly to be so in love with Edward. Well, I am now reading the series for the 4th time. I wonder if somehow the publishers bottled Edwards scent and sprinkled it through the pages…they are nothing less than magical. These men thinking they’re too manly to pick up the books are really missing out. Thank you!
“I wonder if somehow the publishers bottled Edwards scent and sprinkled it through the pages…they are nothing less than magical. ” that is so beautiful…and true
Great Comment from you and a good way to express how everyone seems to feel about the way Stephenie has written her books…I only wish this was real and that there were more Edwards and Jacobs out there…I love the Saga and hope she continues to write them. Reality can be so boring and depressing , when I am reading her books I get lost into a wonderful world and it makes me feel excited and alive again.
WONDERFUL comments from both of you! I find it hard to put in words why I love the saga so much but you have wrote all the reasons why I love it! Edward and Jacob are gentlemen and so kind and sweet and in todays world its hard (but maybe still possible) to find a guy who will even open a door for you!
But Michelle like you said reality is sometimes boring and depressing! But when you read these books its like magic you forget this world and go into theirs and even though they have killer vampires in that world you really dont care because they still have Edward!.lol.
That is just amazing. I’m so very happy that she had that dream. Since picking up the books in late 2007, reading the first chapter during a Chargers football game, I have finally been able to really appreciate writing. Its amazing how one book can alter someones life so completely. I know its changed Stephenie’s, but it has also changed mine and so many other peoples across the world. Thank you Steph for an amazing ride, and for sharing with us your wonderful world.
Happy anniversary to the very beginning of the Twilight Saga! I love Stephenie, and I’m grateful to her for sharing her beautiful dream.Twilight Forever!
Stephenie’s a goddess!!!
I can remember the first time I saw Twilight on bookshelves. It was the day before Halloween 2005 and raining outside. I can even remember the clothes I was wearing! But I won’t say that. It’s kinda pathetic. Teehee. Thanks Stephenie!
Just think- you closed your eyes to sleep,as you have done every day of your life, only to be captivated by a beautiful yet haunting dream.
Little did you know that when you awakened your life would never be the same again.
Who could have imagined the power of a dream? It must be mind-boggling to have had so much happen to you in the span of only 6 years. The lives you’ve touched and changed forever; the actors bringing your characters to life, the fan watching Twilight in a movie theater or the reader who has immersed themself in reading the series for the 20th time. You’ll never know how your characters have touched my life.
Thank you Stephanie Meyer for sharing your dream.
oh my goodness i read the first book then a month later i saw the movie coming out everyone started to watch the movie and not read the books they were missing out so i lent them out my book and started reading the second one ever since i was hooked on twilight and got so many twilight things shirts pins bags even Alice’s necklace! it changed my life completely i don’t know what id do without that dream thank you so much for writing it down and publishing it!!! cant wait till midnight sun!
