Date of Chapter:  August 12, 2006

Summary:

Edward, shirtless, and Bella, wrapped in an afghan against his coldness, are cuddling and kissing in her bed the night before their wedding.  Bella is marveling over Edward’s perfection. Edward seems reluctant to leave Bella to join his brothers for his bachelor party.   He worries about his part of the wedding deal and that he will hurt Bella. She refuses to back down and says she knows what she wants– him. Edwards confesses that he hates taking away her ability to have children and progress, citing Esme and Rosalie as examples. Edward says he wants to give things to Bella, not take them away. Bella tells him to stop mopping and he apologizes. His brothers interrupt them and Bella tells him to go have fun. He leaves before his brothers make good on their threat to come in and get him. Bella asks Jasper what vampire’s do for bachelor parties. He made her relax and said they were just going hunting.

As Bella tries to sleep she is thinking about her concerns for the big day tomorrow. Aside from being the center of attention, Tanya’s family, minus Iriana, was coming. They felt "horribly guilty" for not helping the Cullen’s against the newborn attack, so they were calling a truce with the Quileute wolves. Tanya had also, a long time ago, made a play for Edward and Bella felt threatened by her beauty. Thinking about the Denali sisters made her remember a story that Carlisle had told her about their mother and the plague of immortal children.

There was one law in the immortal world–"keep the secret."  A long time ago, vampires began creating "vampires out of humans who were barely more than infants…They were beautiful…so endearing… You had but to be near them to love them." Immortal children, however, could not be taught. They destroyed villages, were seen by humans, and no words of warning would stop them. The Volturi (Aro, Marcus, and Caius) became involved and decided that these children couldn’t keep their existence secret–they had to be destroyed. Whole covens were destroyed trying to protect their immortal children. The practice was eliminated, but the loss was immense.

Tanya’s mother had created an immortal child and when the Volturi came for her, the only thing that saved Tanya, Kate and Iriana was that they were completely oblivious. Aro touched them and knew of their innocence and spared their lives. The first time they had seen the boy was as they watched him burn in their mother’s arms.

At this point Bella’s memory becomes a dream. She is standing in a gray, barren field filled with burning heaps of vampires. The ashy cloaked Volturi were there, though she was invisible to them. They were circled around someone. Bella creeps forward and sees that a two year old child, as beautiful as Carlisle had described, is the object of their focus.  He is trembling with fear. She instinctively wants to save the child and sprints towards him. She halts as she realizes the child is sitting on "a pile of human bodies, drained and lifeless," all with the faces of her school friends and parents. The child looks back at her with "bright, bloodred eyes."
