There is some concern within the Brazilian filming commission that recent crime in the Rio de Janeiro(photo credit) area may cost Brazil being used as a filming location. According to the AFP:
“The cast and crew of the hit “Twilight” vampire movie series may abandon plans to shoot scenes from the final movie in Rio after a deadly shoot out there last weekend between police and a gang who took hostages in an upmarket tourist hotel.
Riofilme, the city’s agency for promoting movie production, told AFP that “Twilight”‘s US production company Summit Entertainment was in talks with Rio de Janeiro state officials who were trying to convince them to stay.
The original plans were for scenes from the movie “Breaking Dawn,” the fourth and final installment in the vampire fantasy, to be played out in the Brazilian city which is famed in equal measure for its spectacular beaches and its rampant street crime.
But the real-life drama Saturday of drug gang members taking 35 people hostage in Rio’s Intercontinental Hotel as they tried to escape police has proved scarier to the production crew than the fictional vampires and werewolves they deal with.
After a blazing firefight that killed one person and wounded six others, the gang surrendered. There were 1,550 people in the hotel at the time. About 40 percent were foreigners, though none of them was hurt.”
We asked Summit for an official comment on the story. Here is their statement, “The possibility of filming portions of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN in Brazil has always been under consideration and we are continuing to scout locations within the country.”
So, for those of you in Brazil, fear not. The possibility of Twilight coming to you is still in the cards!

just send Jane down before the rest of the production crew. she’ll take care of everythin
what part of the movie would they even film there other than them going on honeymoon
I don’t know. I thought they were going to shoot the honeymoon in Louisiana. (That’s the only thing that makes sense to me.) Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe they’ll shoot down there for when Alice goes to South America to find Nahuel?
I was thinking the same thing about Louisiana but if they shoot in Rio then that would be more authentic and close to the book.
I was excited & hoped you guys would be able to visit the set in Brazil but now after reading this?
*sigh*
I don’t know.
LOL! We’d love to visit a set in Brazil. Our pocketbooks might not like it so much, but we would!
I was hoping for some juicy off set pics of the hunky men of Twi in tiny little swim suits LOL.
Being Brazilian and proud of it I can say it’s really sad to hear that. Many blockbuster movies (Ironman, the latest Stallone movie) and videoclips (Michael Jackson, Black Eyed Peas, Snoop Doggy Dog, Beyonce and Alicia Keyes, among others) have been shot here and nobody ever had a problem. On the other hand, that did happen (though it was a first), and it was scary. I hope they don’t give up on their plan of coming, it would be really beautiful to see the scene where Bella gets off the plane, sees the beautiful city, gets in the boat and arrives at Isle Esme. Plus, it’s not only their honeymoon, she actually conceives Ness there, she finds out about the pregnancy there. Also, there’s the indian lady who knows the incubus legend and talks to Edward. When the final fight is about to break he considers visiting her for more info. So I think it would be really nice to stick to Stephenie Meyer’s writing and make it real. She mentions Rio twice in the books, you might remember that, in New Moon, Edward is in Rio when he gets the call saying Bella died. They did a studio version of it. Maybe Edward (or SM for that matter) has a special attachment to Brazil, who knows…
I’m a Brazilian as well. I got pretty sad when I read the article.
However, there are other places in Brazil where they could filme without being in Rio. The Northeast part of the country has amazing beaches where they could film the honeymoon. Maybe they could shoot Rio from air and the rest in Bahia or Ceara.
Wish I was there.. Looks beautiful..
recent crime?? Rio has been a hotspot for crime and kidnappings for over five years now…. its not going anywhere…
Then choose another place.
i dont care where any of it is shot as long as it looks authentic and the cast and crew are safe at all times especially my robert pattinson.
I read the paper today…
they said BD is not going to be filmed in Brazil
anymore because the filmmakers think it’s really dangerous after that gun thing in Rio…so they’re worried about the celebs..so they cancelled it
i’m from Brazil and i was so sad when i heard it! It was so close to have robsten here before all this bad news. But hopefully the producers will take the original plans. There is hope!!!!!!!!!
Brazil has so many beatifull beaches, and Rio has been scenery for so many international movies… it would be great to have a peace of Breaking Dawn here.
Awwww I hope they do end up going ahead with Brazil! It’s so pretty, and it will make the movie more authentic!!!! C’mon Summit!!!!
