The Hunt for Breaking Dawn Directors Begins

triodirect

In our opinion, which is based on past experience and conjecture not insider info, Summit will tell us details about Breaking Dawn after the Eclipse major marketing wave is over.  That’s not to say that Melissa Rosenberg isn’t working on script options, meaning making it one movie or two movies, that they aren’t figuring if they will use Portland or Vancouver, or when they’ll be shooting. It just means that like most companies, they like to focus their marketing and newscycle on one major product at a time. Pun intended, they don’t want the Eclipse movie to be eclipsed by Breaking Dawn news.

So where is all this going? Well, to prove that work does continue behind the scenes, here is some information vie Entertainemnt Weekly

“Sources tell EW that the studio has reached out to at least three top-notch directors, including Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation), Gus Van Sant (Milk), and Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) to gauge their interest in what is likely to be two movies. (Van Sant’s reps confirmed that he’s been approached, but Coppola and Condon’s people didn’t return phone calls by press time. Summit declined to comment.)”

    Wow…..wow….. interesting!

  2. yessss! Thats what i wanted to hear! Serious directors for a serious movie! :) that means they are doing everything they can to get this one right! I honestly wouldnt mind if drew barrymore was chosen!

  3. Wow! Gus Vant Sant! Sofi Coppola! Not that CW wasn’t a name that I didn’t know, but these a really top-notch directors. I would think the cast would be jimping to work with these names.

  4. Elizabella says:

I’m sure this should fill me with joy but it really doesn’t. Lost in translation was the most boring long winded film I think I’ve ever seen.

Gus van Sant would be good, I think Rob said he’d like to have him as a director. Bill Condon, hmmm no real feeling about him but I’m not sure dreamgirls is the right direction. So basically I’m now fed up :(

    • you’re right.. no sofia coppola. boring. i hated the hurt locker so definitely no bigelow. no way. this is a big movie and these two don’t know the first thing about organizing a project as big as this.

i’d like to see ron howard, james cameron, stephen spielberg, peter jackson, gus van sant, sam raimi, etc.

And… BREAKING DAWN SHOULD BE DONE IN 3-D

  5. Lavinia Cullen says:

    this is cool:)

  6. They’re aiming pretty high, I don’t think we’ll get anyone that big. And by the way, I’m sick of EW trying to get hits with Twilight related articles, they never say anything positive about this franchise or its actors. I’ve stopped visiting their site.

  7. I would love if a woman directs the last book. It would bring full circle and I liked the Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette. An she might get Kirsten Dunst to play Tanya or any other vampire. It would be fun to have her reprise a close enough role to what launched her into fame and she is so pale that they would save on Make up! ;)

  8. Brittanylovestwilight says:

can we re-do the first movie too? hahahaha

    no, seriously.

    • BrittanylovesTwilight, I AGREE WITH YOU!!

      I WANT A DO-OVER! LOL

You’d better believe that someday someone will do it. It happens with nearly ALL classic movies. Just think how much better it could have been with the proper amount of money put into it like New Moon and Eclipse!!

  9. For the birthing Director… I’d like to see a GREAT horror film director put that together…blood, gore, biting… The book is graphic… the film should be too.

    • NOPE!! stephenie meyer does not watch R rated movies and she will not agree to these movies getting anything more than PG13

  10. I like the work that Sofia Coppola does, however, I would be afraid she would take toooo much artistic license with the movie and that would just make me unhappy. It’s bad enough the scripts leave book fans longing for more. She just might compound that issue. Marie Antoinotte was WAY to artistic – lots of New Order music for a period piece. I mean, I enjoy it but I would hate to see her do that to Breaking Dawn. Don’t even get me started on Lost in Translation which was both written by and directed by Sophia Coppola – gag.

Gus Van Sant directed Good Will Hunting but I do not really know that much about the other films he directed. Looks like he wrote My Own Private Idaho, I liked that movie too. He seems to have done a lot http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001814/ of different roles as to working at different jobs in Hollywood so that may bode well to his translation of the story- I can’t say for sure.

Bill Condon did a few more movies that may make him a front runner (of these three) that may be able to do a BD movie. He did Gods & Monsters – a pretty heavy movie and did a horror flick Candyman. I don’t like horror flicks, however, there is some big horror moments in BD so that experience may help. He directed Dreamgirls though and that movie was not a good movie for me – he also wrote it.
So we will see I suppose.

I would love to see Chris Weitz return actually. If Eclipse is decent, I might be for David Slade again. Go with what ya know I say ;)

  11. Sofia Coppola nooo please!! Breaking Dawn must have a lot of action too and she’s not so crazy bout that!

  12. Sofia Coppola is pregnant. Would she really sign on to a project like this that would need to begin pre-production around her due date?

  13. Luisa Ardila says:

While I would love for Chris Weitz to be back for BD, having any of these three would be amazing. I loved Milk and I think Sofia Coppola’s work is very cool.

  14. No one will compare to Chris Weitz as far as I’m concerned. Hmph! It doesn’t help that I have a major crush on him, or that New Moon was my favorite Twilight series book–and favorite movie so far. In my eyes, someone has some great shoes to fill, but I’m hoping to be wowed nonetheless.

    • I didn’t like a lot of things that Chris did with New Moon, so I’m not sure I’d agree that he’d be best for BD.

Edward looked WAY too old in New Moon. The wardrobe was terrible! And even the actors stated that Chris has an old style of shooting a film (“old” not necessarily meaning bad, but that’s just his filming style). I don’t think that’s what BD needs.

  15. TIM BURTON!!!!!

  16. PETER JACKSON ALL THE WAY BABY!!!

  17. With the momentum of her oscar win,I actually think Kathryn Bigelow would be awesome!!
She does a great job of blending well executed (non cheesey)special effects and angles with balancing emotion and action, all while keeping a indie yet grand feel. Seems a wonderful fit, but somehow i doubt she would take on the project without a top notch screen play.

Sofia Coppola would do great too I think. Though I think her films focus more on the character arc and how they develop instead of telling the story and moving it forward I think she would do a great job.

Why am I so excited to see who’ll be picked! And who will be cast as Tanya!

    • Twilibrarian says:

Coppola, van Sant, and Condon would be okay, but just okay. I agree that Kathryn Bigelow would be terrific. Also, has anyone thought of Jonathan Demme (directed Philadelphia which won Oscars as best pix and for Tom Hanks) or Bryce Dallas Howard’s dad, Ron?

    • I agree with you about Sofia but it’s true she is having a baby. People are deluded if they think Kathryn Bigelow wants this project or would do it justice. It doesn’t make sense to me.

  18. Hello! I like Gus Van Sant’s films…I think he could do an amazing job…

  19. Sofia Coppola definitely. All her directorial ventures: Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette have been fantastic films mostly focusing in on a main female protagonist (which works out well for the Twilight Saga). She is exactly what Breaking Dawn needs. An artistic yet skilled director well able to tackle novel material (and she’ll have her hands full with the messy plot of Breaking Dawn)

  20. Gus Van Sant!!!! OMG!!! He’s the best out of the 3. Sofia Coppola’s great, too! Lost in Translation was fantastic. But I’m not sure if Summit can get these directors to sign on. I mean, they’re pretty good, and they probably have minimal interest in something that’s already this big. I’ll have my fingers crossed. =D.

I hate what Chris Weitz did with New Moon..before him I thought Catherine was terrible. But now I see Catherine was better than Chris. The trailer for Eclipse doesn’t look too good either. But I think it has more to do with Melissa Rosenberg than the directors. I dunno. I hope BD turns out great! I really want to like it. Sorry if I’m being too harsh… :(

  21. Tim burton should direct breaking dawn!!!!!!

  22. Seriously, you think Breaking Dawn should be 3D?! Ugh, I’d rather not witness that mess.
Tim Burton??? We want to see Breaking Dawn, the best book adaptation. NOT Breaking Dawn on drugs. I am a huge Tim Burton fan but let’s get real, he will not follow the book.
And just because they’ve been nominated for/won an academy award DOES NOT make them the best option for a book to movie. It has to be in their genre of directing and something they feel passionate about. Can you honestly say any of the 3 directors spoken about have worked with vampire/horror type scripts, or anything remotely close. Catherine hadn’t, and Twilight was a disaster… from the special effects, to dialogue/actors direction, to movie flow… HOT mess!!
I would thoroughly enjoy watching Breaking Dawn directed by Peter Jackson (possibly David Slade, want to see Eclipse first) and know he would definitely do it justice.

    • maybe. but it needs to be a faithful director. not some willy nilly. you’re right, tim burton shouldnt direct BD, he wouldve done twilight some good, twilight and the sleepy hollow are alike. The book is so long and so… informative, that this needs to handle in a delicate manner. They wanna cut it in half? But harry potter and the order of the phoenix the book was 800+ pages and it was ONE movie. and BD is UNDER 800 so why cant it be one movie? and the 3D idea is SO retarted. hollywood is definately ODing with this 3D concept.

    • You really thought Twilight was a “hot mess”. It made me go out and buy the books…I’m old, I’ve seen many movies, and yes the “superman shot through the trees” was a little cheesy. Remember this was on a budget and honestly I think Catherine did a wonderful job with the romantic parts of the story. Every time Bella says “I trust you” and Edward takes her face and replys “don’t” I get chills. I guess I’m just corny. The green filter makes the film look so different…it drives my husband crazy, he keeps trying to adjust the t.v. It’s worth it just for that :)
