Volvo Sales Increase, and Twilight’s To Blame

Silver Volvo

According to Crains’s Chicago Business:

“James Bond has inspired sales of Aston Martins and BMWs with his super-cool onscreen wheels. Now a vampire who drives a Volvo is getting the attention of young drivers.

Since the release of “Twilight” in 2008, teens and young adults have been drawn to the Volvo C30, driven by the character Edward Cullen.

“All these teenagers were going crazy about the C30,” says Carmelo Scalzo, general manager of Volvo of Oak Park. “After the movie launched, we saw this spike in C30 sales. We didn’t know what had happened until we put two and two together.”

Now they are talking about the slick, bright silver car used in Twilight (Pel affectionately calls this this vehicle Herbie the Lovebug on speed). No one has any real data on the dark colored SUV-like vehicle used in New Moon. It will be interesting to see if this time next year the sales will have increased for that vehicle as well.

  1. It was all part of Volvo’s evil plan. To instead give them a sedan in which Edward originally drives and give them a C30…which I bet was the one vehical of Volvo’s that wasn’t selling well.

*Sigh* I guess I need to get over it lol.

  2. Um… the C30 was what Robert Pattenson drove in Twilight the MOVIE and in New Moon the MOVIE… Edward Cullen drives a Volvo S60R… i don’t no.. It makes me sad that people are buying Volvos off of the movie instead of the book… like some day I hope to buy a Mercades Bends S55 AGM…

  3. Damn Volvo to the deepest pit of hell where they belong! Damn them for changing the model just to sell cars, BRING BACK THE FREAKEN S60R SILVER VOLVO!

  4. Yay for Volvo! Honestly, is anyone surprised?

Technical nitpick: “Blame” is a negative word. It means “to place responsibility for a fault”. Unless you guys just really hate Volvo or something, the title should be “Volvo Sales Increase, and Twilight’s to Thank”.

  5. Of course that would happen, it was all a marketing strategy, are they seriously surprised? of course they aren’t they’re pleased with themselves for raising sales. And don’t be offended, we all are part of this money making machine :)

  6. I waaant onee!!!

  7. Forget the Volvos from the movie, I want the sedan from the book, WAY sexier car…

  8. JillEBean says:

I only WISH I could afford one!! :)

  9. Yeah, like any of us really believe that Volvo were taken by surprise by the increase in sales.

I know that some people have a negative opinion of us Twihards, but we are NOT idiots!

  10. i actually went out and bout one (in silver of course :p )

though i have to admit, apart from mine ive only ever seen 3 others in the UK, which kind of makes me happy, mines the only silver one too that ive seen here :)

  11. When I first saw this car, I knew Edward Cullen would never throw away good money to buy it! It’s totally NOT sexy. Edward in an SUV-looking vehicle??….NOT!

The franchise screwed up with this one…

I for one, would NEVER buy this car, even if I could afford it. I’m happy for them, but it was a stupid choice for the character.

  12. As soon as I’ll get my driver’s license (I’m only turning 16 tomorrow), I’ll get myself a Volvo too!

  13. The car in Twilight was a c30 but the SUV in New Moon was a Volvo Xc60. I’m a car freak so i would know this. But i wouldn’t buy a volvo.

  14. I won’t lie, I would personally love to be able to think, “man…I drive the same car as EDWARD CULLEN!” But as for the article, I’ve seen a whole lot of XC90’s driving around…hmmmm wonder why… Not XC60’s though
