We don’t know that David Slade or any director for that matter is taking unsolicited film critic advice but Richard Roeper has weighed in with his two cents. What do you think?

im kinda scared for eclipse…im afraid david slade might make it too dark…and he’ll skip some of the important, romantic scenes….i hope its good…but i have doubt…
FIRST COMMENT!!!!
I have to agree…I’m a little scared for Eclipse. I don’t want it to look anything like his previous movies.
I’m putting my trust in David knowing what the fans want and will tolerate, but I hope he remembers that his job is to bring forth Stephenie’s vision and not his own. It’s a love story first.
I TOO AM WORRIED, NOT SO MUCH ABOUT DAVID SLADE’S STYLE OF DIRECTING, BECAUSE IF YOU FOLLOW HIS TWITTER HIS EYE FOR BEAUTY IN ALL THINGS IS AMAZING. I, AM YET AGAIN, WORRIED ABOUT THE SCRIPT. THERE WASN’T MUCH TO DEVIATE FROM IN NEW MOON. I’M TERRIFIED THAT ECLIPSE IS GOING TO BE AS DIFFERENT FROM THE BOOK AS TWILIGHT WAS. AND THAT WOULDN’T BE SLADE’S FAULT, HE ONLY FOLLOWS WHAT HE IS GIVEN…THAT WOULD FALL SQUARELY ON MELISSA ROSENBURG. I REALLY HOPE THEY DON’T SCREW THIS MOVIE UP.
Here’s hoping he DOESN’T “inject some much needed edginess”!
We don’t need it to be edgy! It doesn’t HAVE to appeal to guys – it doesn’t HAVE to appeal to anyone outside of the Twilight fandom. As anyone who hates the series will tell you, there are a LOT of us. We are quite capable to raking in the money for Summit without turning Eclipse into a bloodbath so that guys will feel more comfortable seeing it.
They can go and watch one of the many other action/horror/vulgar movies that are geared towards them.
We’re more than happy to sit in a cinema filled with women and watch something romantic for a change!
I agree. Don’t they get it? The Twilight stories are not about vampires and werewolves. It’s about relationships and romance and commitment. All of the movie studios have jumped on the vampire bandwagon to try and make a buck. They’ve missed the point. I hope they stay true to the books. It’s the fans of the movies and books that will buy the tickets.
Roeper used to work with Ebert, right? Ebert hated New Moon and said that only fans of the Saga would like/understand the film. I despise Ebert (did so even before his New Moon review) and if Roeper is anything like him, I absolutely do not care what he has to say.
What does Richard Roeper mean by “edginess?” Let’s see, in New Moon we have shirtless Quileutte men phasing into wolves, the heroine being abandoned by her soulmate and chased by a crazed red-headed vampire. Not to mention the Volturi and their minions, the heroine jumping off cliffs, and a nervous breakdown. That’s not “edgy?” What does he want? Blood, guts, explosions, dismemberments (I’ll give him that one-bubye Riley and Victoria!) This is a romance, Einstein. All the “edgy” is a plot device to move the romance along. Duh. Some of this movie critic can’t see what’s really going on. Wake up and smell the coffee, Mr. Roeper. If I want “edgy” I’ll go to see 2012 or Transformers.
A least David Slade has a great directing style unlike Chris Weitz.
I agree that more edginess is a good thing for the saga, but I hope David gets the romantic stuff as well. No matter how scary or gory the movie is, if E/B doesn’t work, the movie’s not going to hold my interest. What people want to see in these films is the relationship between Bella and Edward, if it isn’t there, the fans won’t see the film multiple times in the theatre. That is why NM dropped so quickly at the box office.
Actually New Moon was at the top of the box office for longer than Twilight was and, to be honest, the whole story isn’t B/E. I know plenty of people who saw New Moon multiple times even though Edward wasn’t there the whole time. The story is what bring people in and the characters, for all their faults (and every single one of them has faults) are what bring them back.
Yeah, but the fanbase was a lot smaller when Twilight opened. NM had twice as big opening weekend as Twilight had, but the second weekend it dropped like 70% and in the third it made only 15 million. If the majority of the fans had loved NM the numbers would’ve been much bigger, in my opinion. I know tons of fans who didn’t even bother seeing NM again, though they had seen Twilight several times in the theatre. And everybody said the lack of E/B relationship was the reason they didn’t like the movie.
I completely agree! If the return rate for New Moon had been comparable to Twilight, the numbers would have been much higher. They hit so much bigger on opening weekend but the numbers dropped much faster. While New Moon was dropping off quickly, the Blind Side was growing every week and overtook them much quicker than they should have. This was all word of mouth. If New Moon had properly explored Edward/Bella’s reunion instead of rushing through it, I think they would have had a longer run at the top. I only saw it once and everyone I talked too agreed. Not enough Edward/Bella meant not going back over and over.
You are SOO RIGHT with that analysis on the repeat viewings. It is my opinion too. It is the absolute truth and the numbers show it. They would have made more money if they did not short change the end.
I have been watching Twilight on Show time and it really is great. CH even gave us the apple, and at least she had Edward lying in the bed with Bella, which was in the book. Also what happen to Bella’s lullaby in NM. Many fans share your view.
Frankly, I could care less what the critics think about the remainder of the Twilight saga movies. They ripped apart New Moon and shredded it to pieces and screamed their undenying hatred of anything Twilight to the mass media and web. They can’t seem to get enough Viagra down their thraot to appreciate a story about teenage romance and first love. I guess they’re just so old they can’t think back that far or better yet never had any girl fall in love with them to truly understand the entire story line of Twilight.
They can stick their Avatar-loving, Geeky-Treky love and stay clear from commenting about a saga they CLEARLY DO NOT GET!!!
I didn’t watch the video above!!!
It’d be great if the Twilight sites just remove these critics’ blogs, ratings and articles from all the sites.
P.S. If David Slade turned Eclipse into a horror flick with just sprinkles of the love triangle and romance, I will DEMAND a remake from Summit.
I forgot to add:
NOTE TO CRITICS: Vampires and werewolves are FICTIONAL characters. Therefore, anybody can imagine them the way they want to imagine them the way they want, even though in older vampire/werewolves films, books etc they were written as “horror”, scary creatures. The first people who’ve written about these creatures aren’t necessarily right about their depiction. So get that through your thick heads!!! Stephenie Meyer created her own characters from her own depiction of vampires and werewolves.
hey hey..I thought Star Trek was the best movie I’ve seen this year. and I didn’t know anything about it before.
It’s. A. Love. Story. I don’t want “edgy” in my love story. I want LOVE in my love story. There is enough edge if you just follow the original story. I really really REALLY don’t want to see one vampire with blood dripping down it’s throat or one shape-shifter stalking a hapless human. Give us OUR Eclipse!!
i’m nervous too–i hope the edginess is romantic edginess!!!
The story IS edgy. There is always constant danger looming from the very begining. I think that’s why they brought on David Slade in the first place. I have confidence that he’ll stay faithful to the heart of the book. What I’m REALLY concerned about is Kristen’s wig.
Haha, I agree with you on the wig. I’m totally aching for more edginess. I’m female and I enjoy a romance now and then but I think these movies need more hardcore intense scenes. And by intense I totally mean the leg hitch should be super hot and the tent scene should make everyone swoon, dudes included.
Amen to that. Just don’t forget the “bedroom” scene when Alice kidnaps Bella to go shopping, and Bella is furious with Edward for arranging it. It’s when he first shows her his mother’s diamond ring, and it almost goes too far.
Unfortunately, there is a huge gender issue when it comes to Hollywood movie making. We all fell in love with the Twilight Saga because of the forbidden, dangerous, and romantic element. All of the action, i.e. “edginess” is in response to that romance.
Edward gives in to the idea of “Bella” which puts her in danger in Twilight. He has to protect her. He leaves her in New Moon to protect her, and it backfires. She finds Jacob, but no matter how good he is for her, her true soulmate is Edward. Both families band together to protect her in Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.
It is a romance from the get go. Unfortunately, boys will be boys. When film companies and directors get their hands on a “romance” they have to shoot one another or blow things up. They just haven’t figured out that thr Twilight sisterhood is strong. We have the financial clout at the box office and we know how to use it.
Whether it’s phasing Quileutes, evil vampire armies, or hybrid babies IT’S ALREADY “EDGY!” As for this 59 year old hs librarian, I’ll take my “edginess” in the pursuit of “happily ever after.” And I’ve got the box office clout to prove it.
YOU GO GIRL SO TRUE
Well said Sharon. I mean, I enjoy a little romance here and there; but I’m looking for some more action and excitment in Eclipse. I think the audience already gets the idea that Bella and Edward have strong feelings toward each other, and I think It’ll be acceptable to have a bit more action in Eclipse. I have total faith in David Slade.
I agree. While I’m looking for a little romance, I’m hoping they up the ante with the danger, et.al. After all, the storyline in Eclipse includes more dangerous elements. Edward and Bella don’t spend the ENTIRE book gazing into each other’s eyes. And, YES, don’t forget the “tent scene.” Looking forward to that. Yes, indeed.
little scared it’ll be too dark, BUT STILL SUPER EXCITED!
already counting down. 20 more weeks from today.
Don’t hold your breath on the leg hitch scene. I think I read somewhere that it is not in the script. Hopefully David added it in though. I hope to be plesantly surprised, but I really don’t have high expectations for this one. Does anyone know if David read the book or is he just going off the screenplay? He just doesn’t seem like he would be much of a romance buff. We have tried screaming from the top of our lungs for summit and Melissa and the directors to get these movies right. I honestly don’t think they are listening.
This was why I couldn’t stand Roeper when he co-hosted At the Movies and I can’t stand him to this day. Apparently he like many other critics, didn’t pay close enough attention to NM to see, that there were enough “edgy” scenes to drive the plot along. I have faith in David Slade as well and I’ll enjoy Eclipse as much as I have the other two films. While each book buit upon where the story was eventually going to go,each book had it’s own theme. Twilight was about discovering first love,New Moon was about loosing and regaining love,Eclipse is about choice and Breaking Dawn was about holding on to love, despite the odds. I think once we start to see the trailers, some of our fears should be put to rest.
David like all of the directors has read all of the books. Please don’t type cast him because of his previous work. All of his film have the ability to evoke very strong feelings and I don’t think Eclipse is going to be any different. The bottom line is we have no idea what Eclipse is going to be like until we see it. There is no point in having pre-judgments.
As far as the romance is concerned Eclipse isn’t really about the romance. Twilight was our source for that. Don’t get me wrong there are some very sweet Belward moments in Eclipse that I hope they keep but if they make it too soppy it won’t be staying true to the story. Anyway, there is that one still we have from Eclipse of Bella and Edward in the meadow. Doesn’t that look like a romantic moment.
As for the films not being ‘right’ it doesn’t matter what Summit does they will never get it quite right and please all the people all the time. Everyone has their own idea of what they think the film should look like and include. I am a true believer in the facts that films and books are very different mediums. It is impossible to recreate the experience you had when reading the book. The most important thing when adapting a book to film is keep the heart of the story true. I don’t feel either of the Twilight Saga films have lost their way.
Very well said.
I can understand and respect what you are saying however…
Eclipse is the most touchy feely Bella and Edward moments w/o sex (save that for BD). Through out Eclipse Edward and Bella are very affectionate embracing and kissing each other a lot.
In Chapter 8 Temper, it was so hot especially when he comes back from hunting and she finds herself in the bed with Edward and she was suppose to be angry with him and they are kissing and he is hitching her leg around him, whew…
The WHOLE chapter 20, COMPROMISE with the proposal OMG, very hot and sensual.
Chapter 22 Fire and Ice, when Edward “yes I would let her go. But I would keep watch. You see, Jacob, you might leave her someday. Like Sam and Emily, you wouldn’t have a choice. I would always be waiting in the wings, hoping for that to happen.”
Then Chapter 27 Needs, and she knows who she can not live with out and she quotes “IF ALL ELSE PERISHED, AND HE REMAINED, I SHOULD STILL CONTINUE TO BE; AND IF ALL ELSE REMAINED, AND HE WERE ANNIHILATED, THE UNIVERSE WOULD TURN TO A MIGHT STRANGER.” and Edward says “I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT MY LIFE! I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT MY SOUL!” “Yes,” that’s my point” and they are in their meadow and he wants her now!!! WOW
And there is more.
As I stated in the below posts I just hope it is not compromised. After all it is a romance story and that’s what the readership fell in love with.
All true, but I feel what helps fuels the passion and urgency is also the danger that is lurking, ala Victoria, and the little bit of competition, ala Jacob ( I know. I know. Some folks don’t think he was EVER competition, but I feel differently). Both Edward and Bella know that their happiness could be cut short because of Victoria, so I think this drives the intensity of their feelings in Eclipse. Not saying the feelings aren’t already there, but there’s something to be said for being put in a volatile, potentially dangerous situation with someone you love to really test your mettle and staying power. In Eclipse, both Jacob and Victoria are the catalysts that test and heighten Edward and Bella’s passions, thus IMO they are very integral parts of the story and should be included in the screen version. A healthy balance of both love AND action is what I hope to see. Again, I don’t need two hours of watching Bella and Edward staring into each other’s eyes (although I could look at him for that long).
I agree with your analysis, and well put. Yes to keep balance ALL should be included.
My concerns are that the studio MR and DS are nothing thinking the same way. They will expand on the story lines of characters and add in the action and then sacrifice and shorten the romantic emotional dialgue scenes between Bella and Edward to keep to a time frame.
Now, with movies running up to 2 hours 30 minutes I feel if you want to add the action from the book while keeping the intimate edgy moments between Bella and Edward then lenghten the movie.
Summit will make it’s money everyone will be happy and you will see alot of repeat viewings.
Just don’t short change the romance. Come on… we all want to see some hot scenes (leg hitch, proposal, meadow at the end of Eclipse) between Bella and Edward. They are not the only ones frustrated.
I agree with you Alicia. Maybe I didn’t make myself clear Debra. I want the love story as much as I want the action and fighting. Eclipse is my favorite book. I also think it’s one of the funniest books. One of my favorite parts is when Bella attempts to seduce Edward and he has to keep telling her to stop taking her cloths off. I wouldn’t be happy with Eclipse if it focused just on the love story just as I wouldn’t be happy with Eclipse if it focused just on the fighting. You need an equal balance of both.
It’s interesting to see how much Bella and Edwards relationship has changed in Eclipse and I think you’re right, Alicia, a lot of that comes from the constant danger they face throughout the book.
Anyway, like I said before we won’t know until we see it so all of this is a bit of a moot point. Still fun to discuss our favorite subject thought isn’t it?
I am sooo SICK of this kind of commentary from critics.
IF I WANTED EDGINESS I would read Anne Rice’s vampire books, but I AM NOT. And if I remember correctly with all her readership they only made one movie, it was jammed packed with BIG name stars and it did OK at the box office and NO other movies were made from her books.
As a fan of Twilight I don’t want to see another (30 Days of Night, Blade, Interview with a Vampire, Underworld) the typical vampire movie, we have those, and for you fans who want that great but that is not Twilight.
I don’t want to see David Slade’s version of Eclipse.
Do not add scenes that were not in the book and shorten scenes that were just to satisfy an audience of young men. Too bad they’ll never get that group no matter how much violence they stick in the films.
If they want the repeat business that was for the first twilight movie David and Summit need to put Bella/Edward’s love story front and center as in the book.
That’s what we want to see Bella and Edward action NOT vampire/wolf action. Twilight is not advertised as an action book but as a romance story, it made millions because of that PERIOD!!!!
Catherine Hardwicke GOT IT she wanted to make the movie visual she even gave us the APPLE and she knew that it was about the passion and heat of Bella and Edward.
The Twilight saga is supposed to be about the Bella and Edward love story, but Summit seems to feel we’d be better served with more of the werewolves (New Moon) and more fight scenes (rumored Eclipse). Because an audience of women who bring millions and millions of dollars into your coffers somehow just aren’t as valuable as a possible audience of young men, it seems.
Too bad they’ll never get that group no matter how much violence they stick in the films, AND if the leaked Eclipse script is the final cut for the movie…The same thing is happening again…the Edward/Bella love story is being shortened and key dialogue is missing! WHY?!
It was like summit thought “oh well we have to add these scenes and eliminate scenes but it doesn’t matter how it’s done, those crazy fans won’t care, they’ll watch anything we throw out there.
I would like to see Eclipse with all the action that is in the book. Eclipse is my favoite. I fell in love with Edward and Bella. It’s a wonderful love story but without all the danger and problems that seem to follow the two around ( along with all the other characters deals)the book wouldn’t be half as good. The story isn’t ALL about Edward and Bella’s love. It is important to get it all to make the story worth reading or watching. I think David Slade understands what the crazy fans want and it will be a nice balance of edginess and love.
I WANT MY EDGINESS ROMANTIC AND HOT BETWEEN EDWARD AND BELLA…just as Stephenie wrote it in Eclipse don’t leave it out for action.
I saw Twilight 5 times and New Moon one time. Eclipse is my favo next to Breaking Dawn. I want to see the romantic between Bella and Edward. I want to see their love story!! not bloodbath and not V/R story. Bella and Edward!! That’s why I fell in with the Twilight Saga and why I saw Twilight 5 times. And NO!! I want just spend my money on anything that is put out.
**Please no blood and gore** PLEASE!!!
My friends and I are in this video!
Woohoo New Moon Premiere! Lol
I really could care less about critics input. They will always side with movies that follow certain formulas or full of serious cultural themes. Also the Twilight saga movies are not aiming for oscars or sucking up to critics, it is about bringing bella and edwards beautiful love story off the page and bringing them to live action on screen.
I actually have Faith in David Slade’s ability to pull eclipse together, despite his snarky comments back in ’08 about never wanting anything to do with twilight. He pays really good attention to detail and blends dark and shade with light and emotion.
What I’m concerned about is Summit. Melissa Rosenberg has not done the best screenplay adaptation of the books, though she has tried. And as wonderful as the movies are, summit has lacked a little in the production value in the movies. Also it’s a little concerning that Summit has not released any teasers or trailer or stills (besides David’s beautiful meadow one), not anything for eclipse yet.
As much as I’m excited for Eclipse, I’m very worried too like everyone else. I don’t want it to be turned into some sort of creepy horror movie. I don’t understand why I keep hearing the words “dark” and “edgy” every time someone talks about Eclipse. I really hope David keeps the movie true to the book.
I believe Eclipse is in good hands with Spade, he is a brilliant film and video director and Meyers wouldn’t give her stamp of approval if she felt otherwise.
This film would need an “edginess” to it given the fight scene at the end and Spade is just the person to bring it to life. Just because one film critic mentions one word it throws everyone into a tizzy…don’t worry. One man’s choice of words should not define the entire essence of the film.
error…Slade…no morning coffee!
