Eclipse To Go IMAX

According to the Cinematical Twitter, Eclipse is going to be releasing in not only regular theaters, but also IMAX theaters. The information is also now being confirmed by the official Twilight movie Twitter.

The movie is also following in the footsteps of the next Harry Potter movie by releasing on a Wednesday rather than a Friday. So for all you midnight release people that means lining up on a Tuesday night.  A midweek release, in theory, produces a strong opening. Also since Eclipse opens on June 30th, it opens in advance of those traveling for the July 4th holiday in the USA.

EDITED: Collider has the official press release:

Twilight moviegoers will have a whole new way to experience this next installment of the series, with the enhanced image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience putting them IN the movie,” said Richie Fay, Summit Entertainment’s President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution. “The IMAX release puts us on the event film calendar for 2010, and we’re very excited to work with IMAX to bring a new kind of film to the IMAX theatre network.”

“Our 2010 film slate continues to fill out with strong titles, and a film from this incredible franchise is a very welcome addition,” said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. “This title fills a valuable spot in our 2010 summer release window, and will no doubt thrill IMAX audiences.”

“We’re very excited to work with our new partners at Summit Entertainment to transport the very loyal and enthusiastic Twilight fans into the world of the Volturi via The IMAX Experience,” added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “With our growing theatre network, we’re poised to take advantage of the rapidly growing fan-base devoted to this dynamic, cutting edge series.”

So are you an IMAX or a regular theater kind of viewer, or both?

Actually the official twitter posted that the movie was going to be in IMAX as part of there 200k exclusives.
I’d definitely go see it in IMAX.

  2. steph says:

this will b sweet 2 see alex aka *PAUL* n the imax theater and im goin 2 premiere n LA so this just made it even better!!! THANX SUMMIT :D

  3. BCmonster says:

Ohhh if this is true it will make me happy. I’m totally an Imax type of person, at least for the first time, after that I’ll save my money and go to the reg screen. lol

    • Meemomoo says:

I thought I’d do that too but then I thought maybe the second time I’d see it on IMAX. If there’s anything I’ve learned from my personal experiences with the midnight showings it’s that I have given up on trying to actually trying to absorb the movie the first viewing. Between the screaming audience and me unintentionally picking the movie apart I’ve found (from both my Twilight and New Moon midnight showing experiences) that I better enjoy the movie the second time around and the first time is more for the experience. The vibe opening night is something that’s not to be missed but since I can’t take it all in properly maybe I’ll wait for the first IMAX showing of the morning.

  4. Joanna says:

    what is imax theater?

  5. VanessaR says:

I’m strongly considering making the two hour trip to see it in IMAX.

  6. tamara says:

    IMAX all the way!!
I don’t have to travel any extra the theater a mile away happens to have one. :)

  7. Brittany says:

Yea, I don’t mean to sound like a luddite, but how is Imax different from regular theaters?

    • colleen says:

IMAX is amazing…. the screen is like literally three stories high, and they have speakers everywhere, including huge ones behind the movie screen. It’s the coolest thing ever, especially if you are one who likes booming sound for movies… :)

  8. Sara says:

WOW!!! that’s awesome…I’ll see it several times in IMAX!!! I love it!!!….I have seen NM 4 times, and going for the fifth lol

  9. nik says:

When do the tickets go on sale? I love IMAX movies. Leg hitch on HD and 2d….wooo

  10. K says:

I will watch it at both, the nearest IMAX is a hour and a half away in Memphis, so I’ll probably do that 2nd.

  11. Sylvia says:

    WICKED! :D

  12. Alicia says:

I will probably see it on both screens. BUT, come on, really? This is an exclusive for hitting the 200K mark? New Moon was already on one of those gigantic screens at our nearby theater. Come on Summit, you can do better than this! Give us a glimpse of Eclipse.

    • Beth says:

I couldn’t agree more! They also said that the Taylor promos for SNL were part of the 200k thing. While I’m happy he’s doing it, we would have seen those promos on tv throughout this week regardless of whether or not they had reached 200k. I was expecting something big and exciting and so far the “exclusives” they have been releasing have been a totally letdown :(

    • k says:

Theres a trailer now on twilightthemovie.com. I get to see it at navypeir. barly 20min away. III CCCCAANT WWAAAIIIIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! aWSOME Go chicgo go imax. 13. Kitty says:

For anyone who isn’t sure what an IMAX theater is, let me clarify. I work at a movie theater with an “IMAX” screen. This can, unfortunately, mean a number of different things. Most people think an IMAX theater means a wraparound screen that literally puts you right in the action. However, at my theater IMAX simply means a larger screen (definitely NOT wraparound) with better sound and a high-quality digital projector. The major movie chains wanted to call these types of theaters “IMAX digital” theaters to help clarify the difference, but IMAX insisted on calling them just “IMAX”.

Customers often get angry, because they don’t know the difference. So make sure you do some research before paying the extra money for that IMAX ticket. Some theaters do have the wraparound screen. Personally, I think the “IMAX digital” theaters are still an improvement due to the better sound and picture. But I also get free tickets. ;)

    • switzgal says:

This is correct. Here in Chicago we have both. IMAX (at Navy Pier) is a larger screen with surround sound. But we also have the OMNI-MAX theater at the Museum of Science and Industry which is a Surround screen. Which is a wrap around type screen. It’s really cool!

  14. Jenna says:

so excited about this news!! edward on an imax screen .. i don’t know if i can even handle it! CANT WAIT

  15. Heather says:

I’m sure both, because we only have one theater with an IMAX

  16. Yisel_Cullen says:

This is great…i’ll see it on IMAX the first time and then go to the regular…fortunately…I have an IMAX theater close to my home :-)

  17. papermoon says:

great! i’ll definately see it on imax first then ^^

  18. Hannah says:

Unfortunately, I had a head injury a few years ago and can’t stand to watch surround theaters. It’s a shame, because I know it would be totally amazing in IMAX. I’ll have to stick with regular.

  19. Donna says:

I don’t even know where the nearest IMAX theater is from where I live. So I’ll probably just go to the regular old theater. *sigh*

  20. oleander says:

The closest IMAX theatre to where I live is 4 hours away, so no, barring a miracle that it’s still playing in IMAX in Toronto when I go to TwiCon at the end of July, I won’t be seeing it in IMAX.

  21. Twilight Nymph says:

I might see it in both depending on how well my cash level is. LOL Yet, I’m definitely seeing it in regular.

  22. Barbara says:

Since the regular theater in Niagara Falls is a mile away, I’ll opt for midnight there. Once the opening pandamonium subsides, I’ll venture out to Williamsville NY to the IMAX. One thing to remember about IMAX is the action is big and the sound is bigger. So those quick vampire moves might be a bit dizzying and nausea producing. Sometimes, it’s like riding a giant rollercoaster.

  23. claire says:

i think i’m both – i probably want to see it in regular first because i’m not sure if my heart could take it the first time. plus, after i’ve seen everything a few times i’m going to appreciate the high def picture and sound a lot more than i would have if i was seeing it for the first time

  24. switzgal says:

This is great!!! I’ve seen some HP films on IMAX and they’re larger than life!!
I was hoping New Moon would be on IMAX but I’ll take Eclipse!!!
Then of course I’ll see it on regular theaters as well!

    • Savannah says:

Me too! I was soo hoping that new moon would be in IMAX! That would’ve been a great opportunity for summit. Its really too bad that they didnt. Im glad they decided to go that route for eclipse! Can’t wait!

  25. Debbie says:

Doing a happy dance!!! I will definitely be seeing it in both formats.

  26. Mary Alice Cullen says:

Will this be in all movie theathers

  27. mschicklet says:

I’d be more impressed if they actually shot it in IMAX.

  28. Jess says:

Why does it say “Bloody Disgusting” at the bottom of the elcipse photo?

    • CullenChik says:

I was thinking the EXACT same thing….I’m glad you asked. The “bloody disgusting” tag sounds tasteless and completely derives from the point of the story. It’s not all about the bloodbath at the end, and I know lots of people who would not go see the movie were that really so. Please tell me it is not being advertised like this!!!

  29. Luna Black_ says:

i Can’t wait to see this movieeeee…it will be Wonderful!!<3

  30. Lara says:

Im thrilled but a regular theatre will do it for me :)

  31. Jenna says:

My friend saw Twilight at IMAX. So don’t know why this is an announcement really. :/

  32. Angela ^_^ says:

HA!! what perfect timing they got rid of the proper imax screen in brisbane (but the sign outside still says it is) but i’ll be down in sydney round that time so i can get me an eclipse imax fix. how rad… haha plus my boyfriend who hates twilight will be with me!!! even better :D

  33. Anastasia says:

Imax definately. The fight scene with Victoria alone should be well worth the extra ticket price.

  34. MaleTwilightFan says:

Never had the pleasure of seeing an IMAX movie at Navy Pier but I have been to the one at the Museum of Science and Industry. When I had seen “The Dark Knight” at another theater the screen was very big. Forgot the exact demensions but I remember it was 5 tall by 7 wide. I had also seen “Star Trek” at the same theater. You can pick up the detail. I think it’s a good choice.

  35. safina says:

Wow, this is amazing! If I can find an IMAX theatre near where I live, I’ll definitely go. I’m really glad Eclipse is coming out at the end of June because then I won’t have to worry if it’s released on a Wednesday because I’ll be on Summer vacation.

  36. switzy4ever says:

i’m thinking I’d like to see it in both. first, i would go the normal route, getting the typical experience of eclipse. then i’d see it in imax. i actually saw harry potter 6 in imax and truly was not terribly impressed. maybe it’s just me, but i thought that i paid an awful lot for a ticket to see just a few minutes of 3D. so that’s why i’d like to see eclipse normally first and then try it in imax.
