The Deadbolt has a great article up on how Twilight news coverage has spun completely out of control. We’ve seen it all in the months since the movie came out. There were fairly harmless things like Vanessa Hudgens supposedly auditioning for the nonexistent part of Leah in New Moon to outright character assassination regarding the Stephenie Meyer lawsuit. What’s more interesting is that once a story is corrected, the outlets that made the error almost never retract their stories, not even in tiny tiny font. So the stories just keep perpetuating themselves.
Deadbolt, which operates out of Vancouver, did something really awesome the other day. They asked us about the quote we got from Summit about the Stephenie Meyer lawsuit being fake. They didn’t just take our word for it. Deadbolt has an article up on what they’ve seen as a shift in media responsibility in the ten or so years that they have been on the Internet.
“Between five and ten years ago, rumors were handled much differently prior to the blogging explosion. It was an unspoken rule that without confirmation, you’d be tarred and feathered and mocked over a lack of credibility by reporting rumor as fact … or near close to fact, as near certainty. Confirmation, or near confirmation was key. Today there’s an “okay, let’s move on” mentality since there are simply too many outlets, too many people writing the same stories, and too many writers with wide gaps in experience all playing in the same pool.”
Check out the whole story here.

Don’t kid yourself credibility is everything if you are a writer who wants readers. I quit reading the standard news sources for both serious news and entertainment because most of the time they are off on some random corporate trip that doesn’t relate to my interests or needs for info. I have a set of blogs I read and they are credible or they get replaced quickly. This site is great and well edited. Frankly I find these days bloggers understand credibility and relevance better than corporate media.
That’s a very good article and brings up many thoughts I hold on ‘twilight news’.
I used to go on Google and type in ‘new moon or twilight’ and click on news. I used to gobble up so much of the crazy rumors that it took a toll on my twilight mentality.
Once the rumors got as crazy as to “who’s dating who , and who smells like what” that I completely gave up on Google and instead came here to twilight lexicon where ALL the news is TURE and they don’t waste time worrying about stupid news.
It annoys me when I do occasionally go to other news sites to here more news on twilight and there are twilight fans who actually believe the lies. Hopefully there are more people out there who are smart enough to detect rumor from fact.
We should start commenting on stupid Twilight news at other sites (which I try to avoid) something like “I read at Twilight Lexicon…and they are 99% accurate and retract their rare mistakes publicly”. Because maybe a lot of people who get sucked in don’t know about this site. If you put a link to this site you will probably get “moderated”. Also I like the Sham Wow guy for Breaking Dawn director rumor, you know some fabrications are so amazing you just have to run with them.
I always check Twilight news from the Lexicon because I know they aren’t fake and they were well searched before posting.I know I can count on the Lexicon for clearing rumors.
Thanks enormously to the Lexicon for your amazing work! Keep it going!
Just recently I had to contact the local paper because my boss claimed she had written an article for our work, when I had written it. They told me she would have to call/contact them to have them print a retraction. WTH is that?! I even provided proof, and they still won’t print a retraction without her saying that I had written it. So, not only am I leaving my job, but I am done with the local paper as well.
It is refreshing to see at least one outlet calling out others for false reporting or false leads. This is obviously not just happening on the internet it is happening on the larger scale media outlets and it is disturbing! The whole mentality is “half-ass”!
Nobody wants to actually do the leg work anymore. They want the quick way out and still want to be paid for the work!
We are into a full on Lazy and weak society!
Sorry its cynical I know, but so true!
this comment has very little to do with the post, although it think it raises a lot of interesting points. i just assumed that because Leah wasn’t announced in the New Moon casting that her part wasn’t filled. is she going to be appearing by eclipse or are they planning on cutting that part of the story out completely (which i don’t think would work anyways).
i agree with safina, twilight lexicon is on my work rss feed so i never miss a minute of news. keep up the good work guys!
Yes Leah will be in Eclipse. She just isn’t a prominent character in new moon. Don’t worry.
The cesspool is what the tabloids that aren’t verifying fact from fiction R swimming N & they R drowning us N it when we fall 4 it. It’s up 2 us 2 not let them feel us up with this crap! I 4 1 think it stinks worse then someone with diarrhea N a public restroom! I apologize 4 the under par comment but we need 2 wake up & smell the roses from the stench! B better judges & jurors of what we invest R time & $ N real facts vs. real fiction with the intent of hurting the 1s we love! It was ridiculous how many times I had 2 correct people who took the Rob smelling comment as fact @ my work where over a 1,000 ppl R employed all who couldn’t wait 2 pass that bit of dirt on 2 me since they new I am such a big fan evident by my clothes, car, bling and inability 2 not talk of my love for everything Twilight. They passed it on from 1 2 another, these R the same people who took the Stephenie Meyers lawsuit as truth & how I had to correct them over & over again when they wanted 2 pass this info on 2 me. I had 2 correct the others that they passed on this garbage 2 as well. Maybe Edward stinks 2 the Wolves and vise versa but that’s part of the story fiction & even Bella still thought they both smelled rather pleasant just different. That’s not how Rob & Taylor really smell so please don’t B stupid & buy everything your fed, especially when it’s stated in malice!
