Twilight Hits the Arab Speaking World

Posted by Twilight_News - 03/04/09 at 12:04 am

According to Publisher’s Weekly the Twilight Saga is set to take the Arab-speaking world by storm. In fact it might be more popular than Harry Potter.

“The Harry Potter books did not sell as well when translated into Arabic as it did in other parts of the world,” said Haissam Fadel, foreign rights and sales manager of the Arab Cultural Center, an Arabic-language publisher interviewed at last month’s Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. “It may have had something to do with the fact that readers didn’t know exactly who the books were for—adults or children.

We’re going to predict success on this one, and we want to take this opportunity to give a shout out to the Lexiconers who are in the Arabic speaking Middle East! According to our stats here’s who visits us:

471 people from the UAE

235 people from Saudi Arabia

47 people from Kuwait

38 people from Lebanon

34 people from Qater

34 people from Bahrain

I bet some of those people are American Military stationed over there. I know my friend got on the Lex when he was stationed over there a while ago =] Anyway, that’s really cool how it’s catching on!

  • Profit2829 says:

Hey you guys! Yeah my sis lives in Dubai and Twilight has a huge fan base there especially among the expatriates. Its great that there’s an arabic translation as well!
My sis watched Twilight a few times in the cinema and when it got to the part of the kissing scene the whole theater practically clapped!! I kid you not!!
Haha she had trouble getting the books there so I had to buy from Singapore. Apparently the DVD and OST is not there yet so most of the fans are getting it online!

  • Sitsu says:

According from the site visitors, does that mean Twilight is going to flop in West Asia too? :p

  • Merna says:

wow thats amazing….i live in kuwait even thought im not Kuwaiti…im actually Egyptian…but still, this is amazing, i just hope they’ll come and visit, they don’t know how many fans they have here in kuwait!! When i say these fans i mean me and my friends, we’re totally CRAAAAAZZZYYYYYY ABOUT IT!!!!!! i hope they’ll visit!!!!!!

  • C says:

    I live in dubai !! I don’t speak arabic thought …

  • amethyst says:

YAY, I am arab too except I live in Canada. WOOP! i’d definitely buy the arabic translation. UAE has a huge fanbase, my friend lives there.

I wish I lived in Dubai now. . .. ughhh

  • Zay says:

I’m from the Middle East! I would love to read the Iranian translation of Twilight… it’s a shame they’re not doing it.
oh, well i live in London anyway.

  • Veve says:

I’m from Palestine but I live in the USA. I so want an arabic-version of the book!!! That’ll be cool. :)

  • Hala says:

dude thats great! I’m from Saudi Arabia and i LOOOOVE the twilight series! It has thousands of fans here, people are going crazy over it!

  • muse7 says:

If that’s the Twilight title in Arabic, it’s beautiful. I hope the readers there will love the novels and the films!

  • Nini123 says:

Hey WOW go twilight my mom is from Iran and my dad is from India – and i we live in America so… Go Twiligt!!

  • Sane Person says:

Yeah no, this is pretty ridiculous. Like a country where women are forced to cover themselves head to toe would allow a book about a sparkly vampire love story to be merchandised. Wow.

    • Ruba says:

seriously? we are discussing a book and you are talking about religion and criticizing a respectable country? just so you would know, there are millions of fans in Saudi Arabia and they DO have the books. im Palestinian but i have friends there and don’t worry.. covering their faces doesn’t mean they are covering their minds.. they have the books in hard copy and online.

this is for the people who run the site..thanks a lot..you are doing a great job ..you can add Palestine to your list now ;)

  • Olivia says:

Hey, just to let you know, Qater is actually spelled Qatar (pronouned Cat-ar). Just a heads up. : )

    Regards,
    Olivia

  • Charlotte says:

It is cool… but Quater is not correct. It’s Quatar. Hahah

  • safina says:

That’s awesome! I have so many Arabian friends! But I’m not arabic. My friend who introduced Twilight to me was actually Algerian! Love you Yamina!

  • shortstuff says:

hey muse7, what is the translated title??

and “SanePerson” you are nothing but ignorant.

  • Ksen says:

Hey you guys! I just wanted to say that I live in Dubai and the fans here are CRAZY! We were all super excited when the movie came out on the fourth of December- we predicted it to be very late!
The DVD also came out just a week ago and again, everyone’s psyched! The bad thing is that we don’t have much merchandise here, so we have to make do with what we’ve got:)
Also, I’d like to say that while some of the coutries mentioned up there are pretty strict and religiously governened, others are not, like the UAE. The local population consists of about 15% of the total- the rest are expacts! English, not Arabic, is the main language here, and nobody is forced to cover up. I, myself, am from Europe, I’ve got tons of friends of all different nationalities who love Twilight. I still haven’t seen a single Twilight book in Arabic.

  • Sara says:

    Hello!

I am Algerian (living in Algeria), and a huge fan of the Twilight saga, I have read the books 4 times, and I am still re-reading my favourite chapters, but I’ve read them in english (in order to improve it), and I had to buy the books from France.

(I am not even intersted in an Arabic translation, not that it will be available here…)

  • Sana says:

gawwwwd! there is such a HUUUGE arabic speaking fanbase here in the uae! i live in abu dhabi but im not local. maybe i’ll make one of my friends buy the arabic translation and try to read it using my 11 years of compulsary academic arabic(despite this hardly any non-local here can speak arabic!).
even though im an ENORMOUS fan of hp, it never really caught on as much as twilight has…the hp movies r much bigger, which is kinda disappointing.

  • Alice says:

Thats is so so so cool! I am from the middle east but live in the U.S.A. but I told my friends about Twilight back home and the so want to read it but now they can! This is so awesome!

  • Renee says:

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this? I’m studying Arabic, and reading a story I know in another language is an amazing way to learn the language! Please email me a website I can get it at at breizey@juno.com, if you know???? Please please please please please??????

  • Monica says:

    Sane Person,

    stfu.

  • Twerd says:

WOW that’s great..i’m Egyptian and i’ve read the first three books (gonna start reading breaking dawn:) )..i don’t know if the Arabic translation will be so huge but i just wanted to say that TWILIGHT has an amazing fan base in Egypt:)

  • Joanne Maria says:

I wonder if Twilight is available in braille?

  • Louliz says:

Hehe, I’m Lebanese and the Twilight movie got so many people to start reading the books! I myself have converted a dozen people to Twilightism ;)
As a Lebanese translator myself, I’m not too psyched about it being translated :P I wanted to translate it as a M2 project ;P
    But woohoo anyways =D

  • ^laura^ says:
