Juan Antonio Bayona To Direct Eclipse?

Posted by Twilight_News - 11/03/09 at 12:03 am

The Risky Business Blog ( a subdivision of The Hollywood Reporter ) is reporting that,

“Juan Antonio Bayona has emerged as one of the finalists to direct “Eclipse,” the third movie in Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” franchise.

The studio declined to comment; a rep said producers were looking at a number of candidates.”

It’s interesting that the report didn’t get a denial from either the Bayona’s or Summit’s camp, instead it was a no comment. Read the full story here.

    i really liked the Orphanage.
I’d love for him to direct Eclipse.

  • jaimeralph says:

I think either him or barrymore would be great choices…barrymore because she is a seasoned actress but is still very young, making it easier for her to relate to the cast and direct them more efficiently…bayona on the other hand is incredibly talented and has made some great films…the orphanage was fantastic, and pan’s labyrinth was so heartwrenching and beautiful…so far i’m really pleased with summit’s options =D

  • Sara says:

When I looked to see who directed Pan’s Labyrinth it says Guillermo del Toro, not Juan Antontio Bayona. The only way he’s connected at all to Pan’s Labyrinth is because Guillermo del toro worked with him on the film The Orphanage.

I’ve seen Pan’s Labyrinth, but I’ve never seen any of Juan’s movies so it’ll be interesting to see if he’s going to direct Eclipse.

I wonder who else is in talks to be the director.

  • Alu Rathbone says:

You said finalist and I’m imagininig this huge like competition where the players have to do all these stupid games… and who ever wins moves on to the next level… lol

I know it’s not like that… but still it would be funny to watch that on reality tv…

  • SK says:

What movies did he direct before?

  • isa says:

Bayona? This would be BEYOND AWESOME. Please please Summit, I’ll go see a movie he’s directed 10 times for sure!

It sounds like it’s confirmed that they are going to do all of the filming in Canada.

  • Denise says:

I dont know who he is but like I said before I will keep biting on my tongue until I get the official confirmation from summit, which soon be soon as I think I read somewhere that they only have an 8 wk break after filming New Moon, so they would need to get there butts in gear and get it sorted out :)

  • Jane R says:

I’ve seen a few of Juan Antonio Bayona’s works. I would much rather see him direct Eclipse then Drew Barrymore He’s done a number of fairly “dark” movies so I think Eclipse would be right up his ally.

  • papermoon says:

he’d be a better choice than drew, though i’d still rather see either Guillermo del Toro or Alfonso Cuarón. Bayona would do well, i think. i’m not crazy about any of the other choices i’ve heard. Bayona is the best suggestion i’ve heard so far.

  • FreakinLoon says:

del Toro would be amazing and Cuarón did my favorite Harry Potter of the first three, but I think this movie would be a perfect outing for Bayona’s first English film. I’d really prefer Bayona over Barrymore.

I wonder if she’d be considered for Breaking Dawn? Question to you all: Do you think we’ll have to wait until after New Moon’s release to find out if Summit will greenlight it or think we’ll hear something this summer?

  • Allie says:

I think Drew Barrymore is my top pick, but Eclipse will still be wonderful, no matter who directs.

  • Jade says:

He did Pan’s Labyrinth? Wow. If he did then I’m all for him.

  • becky says:

    pans labyrinth was del toro.
i loved the orphanage, it would be awesome to have bayona be a part of these films, i reckon he’d bring a nice edge to it, especially for eclipse!

  • Kevin says:

J.A Bayona would be quite the person to direct Eclipse. His directorial debut, The Orphanage, was an exquisite piece of cinema. An arthouse horror film that retained heart and emotion. This is exactly what Eclipse will need. In cinematic terms it has the potential to be the darker of the series. The threat of Victoria, if successfully played up, would be handled very well by Bayona and it’s clear from his previous work that he has a keen eye when focusing on the effects a circumstance has on the human form.
Although I like Drew as an actress, until I see her first film Whip It! then I am putting Bayona as my first choice.

  • cullen_cougar says:

Wow, he’s an amazing director…..he would be an AWESOME choice!!!

  • creamy says:

Anyone who would bump Drew Barrymore out of contention would get my vote.

  • Rockin'It says:

Yeah, I’m with creamy. I’ve never seen his work, but if he takes Barrymore out of the running, I’m all for him! Plus, if I’m correct, he has experience with dark movies, so that’s all the better!

  • lirael cullen says:

he sounds like an awesome choice. never seen his movies before but, i probably will to see what he’s has going on and stuff.

  • Bruja says:

I think he would do an EXCELLENT job if he ended up directing Eclipse! He is DEFINITELY at the top of my list!

  • Ahuh says:

The Orphanage was incredibly dark. Loved it.

  • jazjade says:

He directed The Orphanage, which was a wonderful film. It had a sense of wonder and an eerieness that I really loved. It would be great to see his direction of Eclipse.

  • sana says:

he would do a FAB job… all the elements… can see drew doing a &^%$ up to be honest more chick flicky then acutali CGI and action and just well amazing cinamatic effects and depth.

  • Cargonza says:

Ahh The Orphanage is the only movie that has every really scared me! I loved it! Oh he would be great. I think he would do for Twilight what Cuaron did for Harry. Buahaha!

  • sue says:

As long as it’s NOT Barrymore I’m happy…

  • If Breaking Dawn doesn’t get made it will be a complete waste of a series, without breaking dawn and its amazing ending to our dear saga, the films will be nothing…..

    PLZ GREENLIGHT BD!!!!!!

  • LOLO says:

Okay this whole Eclipse crazyness is annoying and all but what buggs me is will Breaking Dawn get turned into a movie or not. I am going to be more upset than when Victoria found out that Edward had killed James if they don’t make Breaking Dawn into a movie. I’m soo serious! I don’t care if it takes 2 movies or 20 movies i want to see it!

  • B Cullen says:

Wow, from what he has already worked on he seems right to do Eclipse. He seems like he’ll take the movie to the next level and make it edgy. I like Drew Barrymore as an actress but I think she’ll make in just into a boring predictable chick flick.

  • Carolina says:

He’s PERFECT! El Orfanato was an amazing movie it was dark and filled with emotion! Summit you have to give Eclipse to Bayona!

  • Jenna says:

Shouldn’t they see how CW does before they start coming up with all of the directors for EC?

  • nezzi4teamtaycob says:

i really don’t know anything about directors AT ALL so i think i am going to loook at all my fave movies and find out who directed them b/c serioiusly, i only know the few that were so original and so directer-ly that i remembered them.
I DO know that i don’t want drew barrymore, she sounded like a total idiot!

  • Edwardian99 says:

I’ve seen some movies that he has directed and they are pretty good…he’d be kool to direct eclipse…i just still think that none of the movies can possibly be better than any of the books!

  • TATi says:

i dont think ive seen any of his movies but im hopeful… i would LOVE to have the director of HP5 do eclipse or breaking dawn the action scenes of HP5 were freaking awesome in my opinion and the effects were really good too… also as long as renesmee doesnt look like Boo from monsters inc im good =]

  • Melisa says:

Either him or Paul will be a good choice.

  • Amanda says:

Pretty much anyone other than Drew Barrymore…

    seriously, what were they thinking?

  • Enamorada says:

PERFECT CHOICE!Whats with the Boo? Seriously?
I saw that movie The Orphanage also! Most Horror/scary type movies i find cheesy but The Orphanage was soooo good and definantly different. Loved the style!I really really hope he does Eclipse.

  • Jaime says:

i would just like to clarify that i did not say bayona directed pan’s labyrinth, i just meant he was involved in it, because he was studying under del toro when pan’s labyrinth was being made, and he assisted in it’s production

  • Frerard Addict says:

Well, I don’t usually like to judge people before I even know what they are capable of, but reading all the comments before me makes me feel like this might be our guy. :)

  • Rachel A. says:

Whatever happened to the other Weitz brother? He was my first choice.

  • CW says:

The guys at Summit and in Hollywood need to figure out that Twilight is a new genre. It is called “average female fantasy” as in it fulfills the females in the audience fantasies as opposed to the fantasies of exhibitionist actresses on the screen. Then they need to hire a genre director for New Moon who can handle the concept. This is going to be a challenge since Hollywood men don’t acknowledge that average females have fantasies other than how they can best fit into male fantasies. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” movie was a female fantasy, look what happened when the TV show wasn’t. I would put a skilled woman in charge but then a man directed “Moonstruck” so who knows.

  • CW says:

LOLO: Considering how much Twilight made for them you can bet “Breaking dawn” will get made.

  • Elle says:

bayona or paul weitz sound like great options to me :)

    way better than hardwicke.

  • lucy says:

does anyone else wonder why they need to keep changing directors? fair enough to do it for new moon but why a new director every movie? thats what makes it inconsistant in a series that HAS to be consistent… new directors ruined harry potter and will do the same to the twilight saga

  • Jules says:

CW I agree, if they make a lot of money with New Moon and Eclipse you can bet they will make Breaking Dawn. As soon as they receive the revenue reports on New Moon and if it hits their target, they will announce they will make Breaking Dawn I’m guessing, but that’s how it works in Hollywood.

  • tnmebd says:

its official according variety he will direct eclipse. did u guys see the cover of GQ rob’s on the cover!
