Fans Rally for Blood Drives

A variety of Twilight sites such as His Golden Eyes and their Carlisle Would Approve (CWA) project sponsor events to encourage blood donation.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has an article on the efforts of one local fan. So if you live in the area, consider driving by and donating to a good cause.  Blood donation is especially critical during the holiday season.

Here are some interesting facts about blood donation (source The Mayo Clinic)

  • Only 5 percent of eligible donors across the nation donate blood, but the number of transfusions nationwide increases by 9 percent every year.
  • Blood donors can donate as frequently as every 56 days. A benefit from donating this often is that you receive a mini-physical once every two months.
  • Each whole blood donation can help as many as three people. One unit is divided into three parts: red blood cells, platelets, and plasma.
  • Whole blood donation only takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Blood cannot be manufactured. It can only come as a gift from people.
  • The need for blood increases during holidays and summer months. People are more apt to be traveling and active during these times and thus are at an increased risk for accidents.
  • Statistics show that 25 percent or more of us will require blood at least once in our lifetime.
  • You burn about 650 calories by donating one pint of blood.

Bravo to her! I donate quarterly and it makes me feel good that I just might save a life.

  3. Sara says:

Can someone please tell me how you burn 650 calories by donating blood? Because I don’t see how that is possible. They don’t make you run while you are giving blood. you sit there.

  4. Angela says:

    I love this idea!
I’m anemic and require a transfusion almost every month. Donating blood is an awesome way to give back to people in need. I wish I could donate.

  5. Angela says:

    oh and Sara–
it is possible, your blood levels go down and so your body needs to work harder

  6. Alana says:

My school is having a blood drive on Nov 21:)

Haha, my friends and I started freaking out!

  7. Enough for Forever says:

I think this is a great idea, and the perfect connection with Twilight. My dad has always given blood every time our church has a blood drive. When I was little, I never even thought about him doing it, it was just the way things were. Blood drives are a great cause, and everyone who is eligible should consider it.

  8. GAby says:

I just donated blood on Tuesday at my school XD It made me feel great!

  9. zora says:

lol why does this blood donation remind me of jacobs comment in breaking dawn of “will it be type O? type a?”

  10. pinky says:

I am 0- and they tell me that my blood is rare? So I do give blood whenever I can. I am sorry that you need blood transfusions….I am glad I can help people like yourself. :)

  11. Ciera says:

ha, I literally just read an email my newspaper advisor sent me with a link to this article since she knew I loved Twilight. I live in Wisconsin, so this is pretty near to me, but alas I’m not old enough to donate!

  12. Alison says:

I work at a movie theatre and we are putting on a blood drive along with Twilight! Donors can enter to win prize packs and they can do it right after they see the movie!

  13. Lis says:

Kinda ironic that Twilight fans donate blood…I just find that funny.
But what if our blood goes to a thirsty Renesmee? lol.
Idk of any blood drives in Honolulu, but if I find one, I’ll go.

  14. safina says:

I think I’ll never be able to donate blood even if I wanted to.

  15. Kris says:
