Hot Topic and MTV

Hot Topic has another new tee. This one is on a lamb theme.

MTV also has posted about Hot Topic and their listening parties.  They then ask the question if you’ll actually set foot in a Hot Topic store because in doing so it’s supposedly confirming stereotypes about Twilight fans. according to MTV:

"If you’re a “Twilight” fan with an unhealthy obsession for “Nightmare Before Christmas”-branded ephemera, or gigantic, strap-laden black pants, you’re no doubt jumping for joy over the news that on October 24, Hot Topic stores across the country will be hosting listening parties for the “Twilight” soundtrack.

On the other, attending the listening party would not only require you to actually set foot inside a Hot Topic, but would also mean you’d be actively confirming every single stereotype of the “Twilight” fanbase.

It’s a conundrum, indeed.

So — “Twilight” fans who are a little wary of Hot Topic — this one’s for you: On October 24, will you be in attendance at your neighborhood Hot Topic store? Or will shame and the glaring eye of the public keep you away? Let us know in the comments.

"

They want to know what you think.

Comments

  1. This makes me so mad. Way to make people who go to Hot Topic sound like freaks MTV. Just because someone dresses goth doesnt mean anything.

  2. Confirming what stereotype?

That we have good taste in stores as well as books?

  3. OMG! Umm, thanks MTV for bringing up a stereotype that not that many people think.

  4. i’ll admit, i am a little scared to go into Hot Topic, but I’ll do anything for Twilight. I have alot of really good friends that love that store, so I think i can handle being in there for a few hours.

  5. KatieG, i think their point is that many people associate vampires with people who dress goth. they’re not implying anything about people who dress that way, though.

  6. This is seriously the stupidest thing of my life.
    Way to stereotype people MTV.
Anyone can go into that store.
It’s not scary, it’s not just for as they say for people who wear “strap-laden black pants.”

  7. “So — “Twilight” fans who are a little wary of Hot Topic — this one’s for you: On October 24, will you be in attendance at your neighborhood Hot Topic store? Or will shame and the glaring eye of the public keep you away?”

They sell Hello Kitty merch, for crying out loud.

  8. Wow. That was odd. What stereotype are they talking about? I agree w/you, Keri Lynn. That’s pretty dumb.

To answer their question: Yes I will be there listening to the great music and purchasing Twilight merchandise for 10% off. Woo.

  9. Okay this is so funny, really I mean c’mon.Seriouly…Seriously.

You know when I actually went into our Hot Topic to get a team edward tee shirt I got the whole “which one of things do not belong” looks.

Honestly I didn’t know that Twilight had a stereotype because honestly most of the people that I shae Twilght with are not your typical Hot Topic shoppers. The only encounter of stereotypes was when the group of Twilight fans at a viewing of Hot To Be were told in so many words that we weren’t worthy of the viewing because we were fan girls…LOL

It just keeps getting better. And people have the nerve to tease me about spending so much time reading Twilight when they spend their time judging every little thing people do…hahaha
I will be going to Hot Topic to listen to a soundtrack not to become a sterotype and my butt will probably buy the lamb shirt. Get over it. Find something more productive to do.

  10. whats up with that? i will defintily be there no matter what they say.hot topic isn’t even goth.

  11. I am so not a Hot Topic fan [not my style] but when they started selling the twilight shirts I went to the store and saw [more like drooled over] them… in other words.. who cares?

    twilight? im there

  12. i don’t care what people think and im not scared of hot topic, im totally there!!

  13. Twilight Nymph says:

Seriously MTV sound like my mom and grandmother, just because they see punks and goths shop there they automatically think it’s just for them. Grow up, seriously, it’s for anyone, I took my cousin into Hot Topic the other day and she liked it and she not into anything that has to do with the supposed stereotype, neither am I. I mean if it was for that, do you seriously think they would sell disney, HP, and Hello Kitty stuff. I don’t think so.
Yet, I will try my best to be there on Friday.

  14. MagicWings says:

Hot Topic does kinda freak me out… I was there today to get a Twilight shirt with my mom and I’ve been there in the past to buy anime related things… but the atmosphere there is a bit creepy to me, though some of the clothes are intriguing. The people, I’m sure, are fine, but I’m speaking specifically of the atmosphere and music. I didn’t realize there was a stereotype with Twilight and Hot Topic, though.

But, I wouldn’t go to the listening party, regardless even if it was being held at Borders or something. I’m not really the type to do that and I’d rather wait for the movie to hear it.

  15. I have to admit, I can kind of see what MTV is talkin about, but I don’t think many people are really going to have a problem with it. I’m not a fan of Hot Topic, but for Twilight I would go in the store in a heartbeat. And I think that any other fan of Twilight would do the same.

  16. I won’t be at the listening party.

But I am going to say that MTV is completely wrong on the stereotyping. I don’t wear “strap-laden black pants”, and I’m not a die-hard fan of Nightmare Before Christmas. I don’t wear any shred of makeup, meaning no dark eyeshadow or mascara.

I’m an Asian girl who dresses in blue jeans, Puma shoes, and a North Face jacket. Sorry, but’s far from the HotTopic theme.

I’m not a HotTopic regular. In fact, my first time in the shop was to buy a Twilight tee (which I eventually ended up getting online from the HotTopic website). I came out of the store with a Deathnote shirt.

Sorry, MTV, but your hunch is wrong.

  17. MTV seriously ticks me off when they do things like this. For the past few months, they have been a great friend to Twilight, and its fans, but now it seems that has all changed. Just because Hot Topic sells clothes that look Goth to some people, and they also sell Twilight stuff doesn’t mean that twilight fans are all goths. There is no stereotype with this, and there wouldn’t have been until they brought it up. I guess MTV is just jealous that they aren’t A) Awesome enough to have any rights to Twilight and B) That they aren’t made of enough win to like Hot Topic too. Apparently they haven’t got as good of a taste in stores as they do in books. You don’t have to shop at Hot Topic to be a Twilight fan, and I admit that I don’t own anything from Hot Topic (yet) but there should be no shame in going to Hot Topic for a listening party, even if you don’t like the store its self.
And what on earth is this “stereotype” in the first place? I never even realized that there is one until MTV so conveniently pointed it out. You know why? Because there ISN”T one!!! This was just a clever way for them to create a stereotype of Twilight, just so that they can put a label on everyone who has ever read Twilight. What has this world come to that people will MAKE a label where none exists, just so that they can be prejudiced against the fans of a certain book series?

  18. imasucker4edward says:

    what are they talking about?!
    haahha. oh well.
Im totally going there to buy a bunch of Twilight stuff and listen to the soundtrack and pre orderrr.
Hot Topic is awesome, i dont get what the heck MTV is talking about. i Agree with Dev.

  19. Midnight_Sunshine says:

I never knew that there was a goth Twilight stereotype… hmmm… anyways I did actually go into Hot Topic for the first time because of Twilight. It wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be (the stores just looks scary you know?). The funny thing is that my friend and I were both wearing pink and we walked around the whole store before we found the Twilight shirts, so we got a few funny looks… anyways MTV for once you are wrong.

  20. jenni_elyse says:

If I didn’t have to pack, I’d definitely go.

  21. It isn’t the label of Twilight Fan that will deter me so much as the Hords of 12 year old screaming Fans… Me “obviously” being an older Fan I am cringing at the thought but also aching to hear it… im torn… And I love Hot Topic but dont shop there…

  22. Oh and in no way is a Twilight Fan automatically a Goth, I can assure you I couldnt be farther from Goth and I couldnt be more of a fan… Interesting Label to be put on such a Massive group of people who all commonly love the same thing… Prob not the wisest to Stereotype this large of a crowd… Just sayin!!!

  23. Stepping into a gothic-like store for the first time isn’t going to confirm anything about stereotypes because it’s their choice. If they’re at Hottopic, looking for something specific, it doesn’t mean they have an interest in all things gothic. It does not confirm that the stereotype for the Twilight fanbase is gothic.

Some people go to Hottopic just because they’re curious. I go there to check out some of their stuff every now and then, but do I dress gothic? Nooo. And since Halloween is coming near, it’s probably easier for those who don’t normally shop there to step into their store. Maybe they’re interested in purchasing something for their halloween outfit. Just look at Hottopic’s homepage of their online store.

  24. Grr, this makes me soooooo freaking angry.
MTV is so wrong. I am going on October 24, and you know what? No one is going to stare at me. Because I am no different from them, just a loving fan of twilight, listening to music and shopping for clothes, just all at once. I do not have an unhealthy obbsession with The Nightmare Before Christmas, nor do I wear strap-laden black pants. I am sure that every Twilight fan wants to go to anything having to do with Twilight, so I doubt that just because it is in Hot Topic they aren’t gonna go. Way to go MTV. Seems like your the only ones stereotyping.

  25. I didn’t realize there was a stereotype for twilight fans and just because I like twilight doesn’t mean I like hot topic and vise versa…It just shows how little MTV actually knows about the twilight fans….Have to say being stereotyped like this makes me extremely angry.

  26. I like Hot topic. I don’t see anything wrong with the store. I will be there listening and buying.

  27. I agree with Kim. I didn’t know there was a stereotype for Twilight readers. I’m a teacher, older than most of the “typical” readers, and let me tell you, I don’t shop at Hot Topic, but I would like to go to the listening party. I just don’t know if I’ll make it. But I did already pre-order the soundtrack. I can’t wait to hear the soundtrack!

  28. … I would argue about the stereotype, but I just about peed my pants when I saw “The Nightmare Before Christmas” in a Twilight update. o.o;

But I do think that this article is a little unfair. Oh, well. The whole message the goth-dressing crowd sends is that we don’t care what other people think of us, so why should we rant about an article? Let MTV think what it wants. I’ll be there at a listening party wearing my fishnet gloves and “Team Edward” shirt, and nobody can stop me! ^^

  29. I’m sort of confused to as why MTV said that because they should be aware of the huge variety of Twilight fans there are… Just today I was in Sam’s Club and was walking through the books gazing at all of Stephenie’s books (it’s a ritual of mine I do it in every store xD) anyways there were these two ladies both in the same aisle, one about 40 years old and the other in her 60s or early 70s. While I was standing there (dressed in my Twilight crest shirt and Twilight monster hoody) the older lady looks to the middle aged one, holding Twilight, and asks if she should read it. The middle aged one immediately told her about her married daughters (so around their 20s) who all read them and became obsessed and that she then read it and is also hooked xD I of course jumped in saying they were absolutely amazing and she looked at us incredulously saying “but its about vampires” and the other lady told her to read it, it’s still amazing. After a bit more convincing she decided on it and put it in her cart xD As a 15 year old, that just went to show me, even more than I already know, just how varied the Twilight audience has become in the last few years.

As for the whole Hot Topic stereo typing, that is SO not true! Hot Topic is my very favorite store and I don’t look at all gosh – I never wear any makeup and – though I did go through a short Tripp pants phase – I certainly don’t wear goth clothes. And the people at Hot Topic (aside from a few of the customers) are absolutely amazing! Whenever I go in there they’re always talkative and nice and joke around with each other constantly. It’s an all around friendly atmosphere and there is nothing to be afraid of. I promise, the piercings won’t jump off their faces and stab you =P

I’m definitely going to the listening party :)

    Sorry for rambling… ^^’

  30. Anna Sophia C. says:

I just hate this! I hadn’t even thought about the stupid stereotype thing until MTV mentioned it. I’m personally not into HotTopic but hey, it’s Twilight so of course I’m going to the listening party, I don’t mind going in there, it’s just a store for crying out loud!

  31. kstinkerbell says:

I believe the correct term for what MTV did is called overgeneralization. Yeah, some Twilight fans are goth and lots aren’t. It doesn’t mean anything other than the book appeals to a HUGE variety of people. Hot Topic, if you get over the look of it, is actually a pretty cool place and they’ve got a lot of cool stuff that like Twilight, can appeal to a lot of different people. I’m nowhere near being goth, but i hope to make it this Friday. :)

  32. I love Twilight. I’m most definitly NOT a goth, or an emo. However, I do go into Hot Topic, and I think it’s an excellent store. I will have no problem going into a Hot Topic store for a listening party. I feel that the people that work and shop in Hot Topic are more accepting of all types of people than any other store I’ve ever been in.

  33. um i had no idea there was a “stereotype”. thanks mtv for informing me! does it matter?

  34. wtf MTV? i only buy twilight stuff from hot topic, ive never bought anything else from there!
i never even went in there until it was the only place i could find that had a crap load of twilight merchandise!
    WTH, makes me mad.

  35. I thought that Hot Topic was more about music than clothing, but whatever. Stereotypes are ridiculous anyway.

I figured that MTV, more than anybody, wouldn’t stereotype but I guess I was wrong.

I would go to the listening but I am going to be on a plane.

  36. Haha..definitely wont stop me! I love going into Hot Topic for twilight stuff because I do not look like I should be in that store at all but they have the best twilight stuff around!!! and I love proving the stereotype wrong

  37. LOVEStwilight. says:

    Guys calm down.
    MTV has a point (unfortunately)..

And there is a stereotype, I got called an emo for reading Twilight lol.

  38. Ok so. This is stupid. I halfway agree with mtv cause the stereotype is there (sorry but it is) but to release a statement like this asking for commentary on whether non hot topic shopping twilight fans and going to attend is stupid. Let’s create needless drama lol

    nuff said

  39. I wish I could go, but I don’t have anyone to go with me and I’m dead broke so I don’t have gas money. :( I have to admit I am a Nightmare Before Christmas freak, so that made me laugh really hard. I love Hot Topic, if I could make it to the party I would be all over that.

  40. MTV sunk to a new low. Honestly. It’s just plain rude to go and say that stuff. Clearly the author is close-minded.
Hot Topic or not I’m going. I love the store but I’d go to a listening party even if it were in a Hollister.
    Stereotypes aren’t cool MTV.
    Not at all.

  41. genuinesmile says:

My boyfriend subscribes to GQ…and the November issue has a page with Kirsten Stewart, i don’t know if anyone’s seen it?! I’d scan it but my scanner hasn’t been working. Anyways, there is definite stereotypes…there always are, unfortunately! I don’t think it’s low of MTV…because frankly, it’s just there but maybe they needed to word it differently?!! I don’t know. Anyways, in the super short article they did on Stewart, they mention Twilight and how the fans are either “goth chicks” or “…harry potter fans” I wish i had the magazine next to me, to quote the complete phrase but i found it hilarious that they could break down an entire fan base to those two phrases, i’m neither a goth chick nor a HP fan ( i like the movies but i’ve always caught them on tv)

As for MTV’s question…i actually decided (before this or any stereotype was brought up…lol) that i wouldn’t be going to the HotTopic listening party…i feel that i’ve spoiled so much of the movie with photo stills and what not, and even though i’ve pre-ordered the soundtrack, i’ve promised myself to keep Bella’s Lullaby a mystery until the movie :)

  42. Stereotype? Really. No, really. Because I in no way fit into that.

I’m 20. I’m a B student, two years ahead in college, so I’m graduating this December. I hardly ever wear black, and if I do, it’s because I can’t wear jeans to work and brown is not my color. I don’t cut, which is a stereotype in and of itself that we won;t go into, but I never have. I don’t wear makeup all that often, and when I do, I like natural tones. I don’t like vampires in general. I don’t cry easily. Yeah, I may listen to Evanescence and Within Temptation, but I also listen to a great deal of nonemo things, like showtunes.

I like to french tip my nails- go figure- in white! I like to read multitudes of books, in several different varieties. I prefer happy endings. Weddings sometimes make me cry. I like sunshine better than rain. I like bright colors rather than muted dark tones. I like to break into song in public places. I like to chatter, and yes, even sometimes giggle, with my friends. I don’t hate humanity, the world, or myself.

And you know what? I don’t really like Harry Potter. Never have. It wasn’t my thing, no offense to those of you who do like it.

So tell me, O Great Stereotyping MTV, where on earth do I fit in? And just how much of the fandom does that narrowminded view allow for? 10%, 20% of fans? Maybe more, I’ll allow. But there are mothers and daughters, dads even, college aged women, vast, vast spans of age, race, culture, even country.

When MTV can come up with a stereotype that includes the majority of the fans, rather than one of the minorities, let me know. Because I am rather insulted.

…”actively confirming every single stereotype of the “Twilight” fanbase.”

Actively confirming? By walking into a store? Believe me, if I could make a statement by walking into a store, you could stereotype everyone. I’ve been into Hot Topic a few times. I’ve been lots of different places. A single store, and a single visit does not determine who you are, even to the outside world who doesn’t know why you are there.

Okay, forget insulted. Try disgusted. If I say anything more, I don’t think I will be able to keep my language censored and fit for polite company, but that really angers me. Why must people put other people in boxes? And if putting people in boxes isn’t enough, why don’t we write articles about how to put these people into boxes?

  43. Debbie Murphy says:

I’m a 44 year old mother/wife and big Twilight fan. I will be there!

  44. I think MTV purposely tried to piss everyone off so that fans would “prove” them wrong and go listen on Oct. 24th. I think it was a ploy. They know how Twilight fans are…they wouldn’t be stupid enough to publish that without trying to get something out of it.

    Conspiracy …and plain stupidness.

  45. alice cullen says:

wowwww, way to stereotype… hey mtv if youve ever actually been in a hot topic you would know that they have some of the nicest sales ppl around, they have adorable clothes that the majority of are not “strap laden” at all but actually quite adorable and a lot of the stuff is the same that you might find at a store like delias. they even have hello kitty if im not mistaken. also, cool shoes and great music. so why dont you learn a litte before you make judgements?? i myself would love to go to hot topic on that day (and any other day, in fact i might go this weekend for some halloween stuff) and listen to the soundtrack

oh and also, the first time i went into hot topic i was wearing something along the lines of a pink shirt and some type of skirt and i was treated just as nicely as any other customer and i didnt get one look! if anyhting i think the “goth/emo” crowd (most of whom are mis-sterotyped) are the nicest ppl around! this makes me really mad that mtv is stereotyping! actually it makes me mad that naybody besides petty unconfident teenage girls are stereotyping! i used a lot of exclamation points in this paragraph!

    :D

  46. @ Kim on 44…

Conspiracy and stupidness indeed. This little ploy has not convinced me to change my mind (which was set on not going ever since I signed my life away to college, and didn’t have time for things like that) one bit. I am still not going. I wouldn’t go even if I could go. For one thing, the mall is just too expensive. For another thing… I think I would be too upset to go and “prove MTV wrong”.

People, if you want to go, go. If you don’t want to, or you can’t, or you think it’s in your best interest not to go, then don’t go. Don’t let some idiocy with internet access and keyboard sway you into doing something completely different.

How about this. What if everyone who went dressed in their most un-goth clothing? Collectively? That would be fun. Get everyone in their frilly, girly outfits, and run with it. How’s that for stereotypes?

  47. (sorry, “idiocy” should be “idiot” in the comment above)

  48. Apparently they have not heard of the Twilight Moms phenomenon! This 30something mom won’t be there because I have commitments other than shopping in a store that sells only buckle pants and goth t-shirts!

  49. I have been in one before, only once and yes I will be going back on October 24th. I can’t wait!

  50. Oh this is not going the way I planned. Hot topic Goth? Pleeeaase, give me a break!! MTV what is your problem? There is nothing wrong with going into a shop and buying what you love best!
Anyway, who cares about what MTV say’s. I’m going back again and again, they can put a bar on the shop for all I know, I will be going back!!!
