The Salt Lake Tribune has an article examining how Breaking Dawn has critics who at the same time call the book too racy and too tame, pushing a LDS agenda and setting a poor LDS example, and other contradictions.
You’ve heard of football widows? Well a bunch of husbands, who formed an Vampire Support group because their wives were obsessed with the Twilight Saga, have taken things a step further. They have now started a new blog to support Stephenie and the Twilight series.

East Valley Tribune (Arizona) has an article today about whether the books are anti-feminist.
Yes!! Defense for BD!
hahaha that vampire support group is funny.
haha vampire support group! @nd to comment!!!
oops typo. i meant to say 2nd to comment!
this woman is stupid… the reason why this became popular is because every girl wants the perfect relationship and these books are what most of us wanted to read……. hey it might be a little fantasy but who cares….
I think it’s hilarious that people want to put down the Twilight saga while reading so much social and religious antagonism into the story…I mean, it’s FICTION, for crying out loud! The series is purely for enjoyment. I really got a kick out of something one criticizing author wrote about Edward being a typical sociopath…hmmm, I didn’t realize it was possible for a *vampire* to be a sociopath. I think all this criticism stems from jealousy. Stephenie is awesome and people should just chill and leave her alone!
I think my husband and the husbands of the other SLTA members may need to join that support group.
I’m one of those supporters of Stephenie Meyer. ^^
And Breaking Dawn is my favorite book of the whole series, so of course I support the book.
Ok I really didn’t agree with the article..why can’t everyone just get over every single little detail and just enjoy the book…its a book!! not real life. I’m mormon and I don’t think Stephenie’s novels have gone too far or done anything bad, and I don’t think its right for her to pick out feminists and mormons as the only one’s who didn’t like the book because that’s not true at all. Stephenie’s amazing and I’ve really enjoyed the books.
I have a question, why can’t I decipher Twilight News’ comments?
Well, by just having 3 comments on there so far makes me think not too many people have read these articles. Lets not help them out!
I do think the support group is funny.
what’s the link for lexicon in defense of Breaking Dawn???..
or some other related links??
cuz’ i love twilight n im a devouted true fan!!
Team edward..Amen!
I think that there are more people love the book than do not. It is just that the haters have bigger mouths.
I loved the Anniversary Card at Vampire Support Group. Very beautiful. It would be nice if a support group could help my husband, he just doesn’t get the Twilight thing. He also fears the midnight showing of the movie — girls, screaming, flailing about in their seats — which he will probably attend anyway, and leave in shock!
Its about time someone has the nerve to come out in defense of BD!!!! it was a great book!!!!
I realize that people have different tastes and have the right to their opinion, but they don’t have the right to pitch “BABY FITS” like they are doing. I truly can’t understand why some people acted they way they have over BD???? SM ended the series exactly the way she wanted to end it, it was perfect! Nobody died, nobody had to suffer for years and years before finding happiness and to be honest… as a mother of two, the fact that Bella didn’t have to give up the most wonderful gift life gives us women “our children” it great. I really don’t care how it happened?? if it was the venom? dried up 100 year old super powerful sperm or whatever! (sorry if a little gross) She got to experience the beauty and miracle of being a Mother. No words can explain the miracle of motherhood!
Anyways, people really need to take a valium and relax if they didn’t like it, really. To be honest with you guys, I didn’t like New Moon at all. The fist time I read New Moon I skipped all the chapters Edward was gone (of course after I finished the book I had to go back and read them so I could understand several things) But, I didn’t have a huge fit! I didn’t return or burn the book! I just figured the next book would be better. She can’t write all her books 100% the way I want her to. I think we all have the right to our opinion and as long as we are respectful while we give our opinion, then we are ok.
But, it’s just horrible the way some “fans” have disrespected SM. Just because things didn’t go their way. It reminded me of a 2 year old child you see at a Wal-Mart having a fit because Mommy said no to buying a candy bar… We all are part of the Twilight community, we should be a strong and close community, united by a love for SM and her art. We can dislike something she does, but we have to be respectful about it. Don’t you think? We can’t act like immature children.
Sorry for the long post, I had been holding this in for weeks, had to vent…
You know what i want to know?
WHY IS EVERYONE STUCK ON THE FACT
THAT SHE IS MORMON? Who gives a flying
rats butt? No one else is called a
christian author, or a buddist author
or a catholic author… so why is she
being put in this cage because she’s
mormon? her books have little to do
with religion so why is everyone making
such a big fuss because she’s “to explicit
for a mormon author to be.”? its
absolutely ridiculous.
ugh, it gets on my nerves.
Ahh Critics…everyone has an opinion and this article proves it. SM is brilliant and now very successful with a book series that is easy to fall in love with…natrually people will be envious and angered by her sucess and you will have people out there that don’t get it. For the people that don’t get it what will they do but complain. Men who have lost their wives and daughters to hours of reading have little else to do but critisize; anyone else is just mad they didn’t come up with the idea.
You will always have someone who can find something wrong with anything. Seriously and the fact that these people spend so much time analyzing the content for conspiracy and subliminal corruption is an absolute gas!!!
I love these books, especially Breaking Dawn, they are beyond entertaining and well written, and just like Harry Potter before them at least they are getting people (espcially teens and tweens) to read!
I loved that article!
In other news…
Did anyone hear about the first 12 chapters of Mindnight Sun being leaked online?
I want to read them…but then I don’t…but then I do…ARGH!!!
I agree Erika…her religion shouldn’t be up for scrutiny. It’s not as if she’s writing religious fiction…it’s just regular, good old fiction. Her religion shouldn’t be an issue for anyone.
I agree with you Erika, Who cares that she is a Mormon!!!! I hate the fact that people blame stuff on SM books on the fact that she’s a Mormon, what does her religion have to do with Vampires??????
One more thing… I read somewhere that SM is using her books to recruit the youth for her religion. I think that is a bunch of bull!!!! Just a big a bull as when my old Church said HP had a bunch of witchcraft and said we church members weren’t allowed to read HP. I wish people would stop attacking what they don’t understand. How in the world would reading Twilight turn anybody to being a Mormon??? Maybe might make me want to be bitten by Edward…. 8- )
and yet, the lex’s forum "rules" themselves compare her to Tolkein and Lewis, which is just so many kinds of wrong anyway. (anvil for those who need it – smeyer can never even hope to be in the same league as those writers.)
You might want to learn how to take things in context. We didn’t compare her writing to Tolkein, Lewis, or Pullman (you forgot Pullman. If you are going to quote us at least get it right.) we said her writing is no more an attempt to convert us to her religion as those writer’s writings (all of which are self-admittedly influenced by their respective religious upbringings) an attempt to convert the masses to the Catholic or Anglican faiths, or in the case of Pullman to become an atheist.
Pel
I agree with Erika and lovemesomecullens. Some of the critics are really cruel, and it’s not fair at all to Stephenie!
team STEPHENIE AND IT’S FICTION PEOPLE AND STEPHENIE CAN DO WHAT THE HELL SHE WANTS IT’S HER BOOK AND HER CHARACTERS STOP THINKING SO MUCH WHEN YOU READ !!!!
I’m Jewish and I love these books and its perfectly find for me because their FICTION.
Dah people.
Stop such a fuss about it.
So now, because Stephenie is Mormon, she can’t write about sex?!?!? If people think that Mormon kids don’t participate in “heavy petting” before marriage, they’re delusional! I’ve seen people meet, get engaged, and get married in a matter of WEEKS!!! Decipher that code how you will, but I can only see ONE motivating factor behind moving that fast! Sorry to rant, but I love Stephenie’s books and it makes me incredibly sad to think that people who share her faith, don’t have any faith in her. Shameful..
Ok, well I am LDS (Mormon) And I don’t think that they should kick Stephenie out of the church. Her books are one of the cleanest vampire books available. Many of us in the LDS faith read her books, should we be kicked out too?
NICE…
I agree w/ what True-Vampire-Lover said. I’m a Mormon, too, and I don’t see anything wrong w/ Stephenie OR the Twilight Series. I love them both! I think all this critisizm is so stupid. It’s not like complaining about it is going to change the way the books are. And, I mean, it’s not like Stephenie wrote anything explicit. I, personally, was very pleased w/ how Stephenie wrote the books. She had the perfect balance of romance in every moment.
I think SM is a true American icon. She simply rocks.
Well said True-Vampire-Lover! I think most people that attack SM do it out of envy. I can’t believe she’s being attacked by both groups, how ironic is that? Non LDS say she is trying to convert people and now you tell us that some of your Church are trying to kick her out. Good for you and all of the people in your Church that are standing by her side. She’s done nothing wrong. With all the garbage and filth people write these days, her books are a nice change. Good for you and the ones in your Church standing by her side!!!!
I agree with Erika!!!
This article is one of the reasons i hate living in Utah. Im sorry to say but mormons are so judgmental. Living in a place where im surrounded by them made me realize that. Sorry if i offend someone, but its just my point of view. They annoy me sometimes :/ Especially when i read things like the article they put in the Tribune
I love Breaking Dawn and I so tired of all the bad press. My guy definitely likes the idea of a vampire support group. He says he’s going to sign up on their sight. LOL!
Emilly:
I’m LDS and I wasn’t offended. I understand where you’re coming from. That being said, you have to understand that Utah Mormons ALSO grow up around Mormons and that’s ALL they know. I live in Texas and go to school in Utah and…they’re different from me lol. I beg you not to judge all Mormons on the ones you’ve met.
Also, I think it’s ridiculously interesting that LDS members (mostly parents) think she isn’t being Mormon enough in her novels, and some non-members think she’s cramming her religion down other’s throats. Personally, I think she handled the sex thing very tastefully. She even had them wait until after marriage, after all.
This is what I have to say to those LDS members who think she’s too racy: READ THEM BEFORE YOU LET YOUR DAUGHTERS READ THEM IF YOU’RE SO WORRIED ABOUT IT. If you think your child can’t handle it, wait til she’s more mature. DUH. I’m mature enough to know that it’s just good ol’ fiction, and I’m not going to let a FANTASY book influence my life. Anyways.
ok, guys I have to ask… sorry for asking, but I was born and lived most of my life in Honduras Central America, so I really don’t know… Are most people LDS in Utah? or just about everybody??? this is very interesting…. sorry if I’m offending you, but just curious.
Haha, I like the Vampire Support Group!!!!LOL.
I love these books and it is sad what people are saying. But lets not start judging the whole lot of Utah Mormons. In any faith or group you have the people that take things too far. Trust me I know a few mormons that are out there. But there are more I know that aren’t. I think it is this way in any faith.
It is just sad that people can’t let others just tell a story for entertainment and not try to read everything and anything into it.
I’m so tired of all the bad critics. I love Steph and her books (especially Edward Cullen
) I really don’t see anything wrong with the series, or how can people say it’s racy. And I really don’t know why we’re talking about religion. It’s a BOOK, it’s meant to be enjoyed, (although I enjoy it more than I should, I’m completely obsessed. LOL)
Isabel,
A large percentage of people in Utah are Mormons. In smaller towns (like the one I live in), it probably around 90% of the population that are Mormon. In bigger cities like Salt Lake City, it’s more of a 50/50 split. But, Mormons are definitely very well represented here.
Wow, thank you. This is very interesting. Thanks so much!!!!!
I like the Vampire Support Group, and I’ve already started my own forum for those of us who are not moms and are not teens but love the books and support Stephenie Meyer as well. It’s under http://www.glguesby.net until I get it off the ground I’ve called it Esme Isle and my sisters and I are in it. Go Team Stephenie!
The thing that got me obsessed with Twilight was the fact that Edward in Bella had such intimate moments, like in Chapter 13, without doing anything unchaste. I’m Mormon, and, quite frankly I’m ashamed of anyone who thinks that these books break Mormon standards. I think it’s the opposite, they show Mormon standards, or Christian, or whatever… the point is, Edward and Bella are not together just for the sex, that’s certainly not what attracted all of us fans to it, considering the fact that Edward and Bella are virgins through most of the series…
The article is fair, your summary isn’t though. The critics aren’t contradicting themselves, there are two distinct groups of people who hate the books for different reasons, not one contradicting themselves.
Besides, she completely ignored the critics who hated BD and didn’t belong in either group, she’s trying to make out BD critics ot be either over zealous Feminists or crazy prude religous folk.
If you have to go to extremes like that to justify why anybody did not like (or even hated) Breaking Dawn, you’re kind of pathetic.. the woman who wrote that defensive article for example.
Hahahaha, oo, a vampire support group??
Sign me up! I’m sick of the BD bashing from both sides, in every faith and society there are closed minded fanatics, I feel sorry for them.
I am sooooo tired of people trashing Stephenie Meyer and her books. I’m totally in love with them!(esp. Edward Cullen!!AHHH) Breaking Dawn is an AMAZING book. Really, even though I enjoy it waayyyy more than any normal person should, just enjoy the book.
I’d also like to point out that both Edward and Bella are virgins until after they are married. So religion, please stay out of it. I’m catholic and so are all my friends that are equally obsessed, and none of us are perturbed by any thing in the book. It is sooo not racy.
the vampire support group is funny, haha! : -)
I know this is really far down the line of entries and the third in a row, but I just registered,so please forgive. Erika, you are so right!! why should anybody care about what religion she is, BD is great, and so are the rest of the books. I agree with you so much it’s not funny. LOL
First of all, it was absurd of her to compare Twilight to Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” because these are two *completely* different time periods.
Can’t you see? In Shakespeare’s time women did not have freedom as they do now. There is no basis for the claim that “The Taming of the Shrew” should be bashed for anti-feminism as “Twilight” is, because they both have the same principles.
ABSURD!
If you want a valid argument, look at the facts. The facts come straight from the book, and when you really look at it, there are more points against “Twilight” than there are for it.
Many, many, more points.
