Breaking Dawn Part 2 Trailer to Run Exclusively in Front of Hunger Games

This is a bit of a new one. Usually movie studio have gone with putting their trailers not only in front of films of similar demographic interests, but since around 2000 or so they have also put them online. Gone were the days when you paid from a crappy movie just to see the trailer of something you did want to see. If we are reading this article correctly, it looks like Lionsgate (which recently acquired Summit) is going to exclusively debut the trailer for Breaking Dawn part 2 in front of The Hunger Games.

From our experience this shouldn’t be too much of an issue since Twilight fans (at least from what we can tell in our user comments on the blog and forum) actually want to see The Hunger Games. They are either major fans already or have heard enough about it from current fans and seeing the trailer that they are curious enough to go. It’s not like what summit tried back with New Moon which was to put the trailer in front of Bandslam (remember that) which just about no one wanted to see no matter what the incentive.

Here’s what the LA Times had to report:

The trailer for the fifth and final “Twilight” movie, “Breaking Dawn Part 2,” will debut exclusively on “The Hunger Games” in March — the first significant example of synergy between Lions Gate Entertainment and its new subsidiary Summit Entertainment.

When the studio acquired Summit in January, Lions Gate executives touted the opportunities that would come from bringing together two of Hollywood’s hottest young adult franchises. Because fans tend to get excited about seeing the first trailer for a highly anticipated sequel, Lions Gate is betting it can bring the huge base of “Twilight” fans to the opening weekend of “The Hunger Games,” which debuts March 23.

“‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2′ trailer will debut exclusively on every ‘Hunger Games’ print on its opening night for what will be Lions Gate’s largest release ever,” Santa Monica-based Lions Gate’s chief executive Jon Feltheimer said on a conference call with analysts Friday following the release of its financial results.

So will you be seeing The Hunger Games, and are you going to see it just for the Breaking Dawn 2 trailer, or would you have seen it anyway?

Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg Reacts to the Breaking Dawn Part 1 Trailer

melissa-rosenbergheadshotThe LA Times asked Melissa Rosenberg for her reaction to the Breaking Dawn PArt 1 trailer.

Ever after: Rosenberg was pleased that the trailer in part indicated that this film is about a marriage. “It teases the fact that this a story about … a marriage going through some unusual stresses ….  At one point in the movie there’s a line where Edward says, ‘They say the first year is the hardest.’ It’s very funny.”

Jacob’s heartbreak: We were struck by Jacob’s emotional goodbye to human Bella, as he knows she’ll soon be promoted to Edward’s immortal beloved. Rosenberg says that scene resonates more than we know. “It’s a really sweet moment, and it’s the moment the film turns. It turns into a horror film,” she said. Speaking of which ….

The horror: Robert Pattinson’s previous comments that Bill Condon was making a horror movie were ominous, and the trailer in fact reflects terrible times ahead for the residents of Forks, Wash. “We’re beginning to get into the second half of the film, which turns more into a horror story. The images of Bella — trust me, it only gets more intense,” Rosenberg says.

Movies.Com Breaks the Trailer Down: Is It What the Fans Wanted?

On this week’s Movies.com column, Laura looks at the trailer and if it succeeded in the key areas of romance, CGI, and the element of danger. How did the Breaking Dawn trailer stack up against other Twilight Saga trailers in these areas.

The first area, without question, is romance. Above all what attracts fans to The Twilight Saga is the romance factor. It’s classic Team Edward vs. Team Jacob. With all that in mind, stunningly, not since the original Twilight movie has the romance played such a significant part in any trailer. In the Breaking Dawn Part 1 trailer Bill Condon and company clearly deliver with multiple wedding and honeymoon shots. It leaves fans wanting to see those scenes and wonder what else he has in store.

Next up is CGI. We’ve come a long way from Twilight and its meager budget. Remember the cheesy effects of the fast moving vampires? In Twilight they were smudgy blurs that looked like they were created in iMovie by someone who dropped out of film school. Chris Weitz first raised the bar in the New Moon trailer with the explosive wolves, and David Slade took it up another level in Eclipse with the newborn battle. Now it looks like Bill Condon has improved on both those elements. The Cullens do battle for Bella and Renesmee with Ashley Greene, with Jackson Rathbone clearly seen leading the charge. More importantly is that Condon has created a wolf pack where every wolf is highly distinct in color, bulk, and expression.

Top Moments From The Breaking Dawn Part 1 Trailer

MTV has compiled a list of their top five moments from the Breaking Dawn Part 1 trailer.

Here’s what they had to say about one of their choices

Wolves vs. Vamps
It wouldn’t be a “Twilight” movie without some sort of epic battle involved, and in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” there is a grand showdown between wolves and vampires. The wolf pack, which Jacob has deserted, wants to prevent Bella’s unborn half-human, half-vampire from being born. “Get ready, they’re coming for Bella,” Jacob says, anxiously. “They’re not going to touch her,” answers Edward. We then see a shot of a standoff, wolves surrounding the vampires, at which point Jacob addresses them, “If you kill her, you kill me,” followed by quick cuts of Alice and Jasper Cullen fighting the wolves.
