Comments

  1. Mine has to be Sir Walter Elliot in Persuasion :)

  2. I love Emma! She is feisty and despite her failure of matchmaking, she is definitely an interesting character!

  3. My favorite is Elizabeth Bennett. She is intelligent and witty and independent.

  4. Of course Mr Darcy. Ultimate dream guy. A little bit bad guy, 100% gentleman.

  5. Honestly, I think Emma is my favorite. She is so content with her life and confident in who she is, until she realizes she’s in love, and then she’s as big a mess as the rest of us. :)

  6. NyghtCircus says:

Elinor Dashwood has always been my favorite Jane Austen heroin. Her compassion for her sister and independence in the male dominant society really left an impression on me, more so than even Elizabeth Bennet! I think one of the main reasons why I like Elinor is because of her close bond with her sister Marianne, which reminds me of Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra. Many biographies on Jane Austen depicted the closeness between the Austen sisters, it is a great possibility that Jane created the characters of Elinor and Marianne around herself and Cassandra.

  7. Brenda Wood says:

My auto-response to the “favourite Austen character” question is normally Darcy but now that I think about it, I actually really like Anne Elliot. She is the character I most relate to. She starts out very imprisoned by her past decisions but she is patient and steadfast and eventually gets her HEA.

  8. Anne Elliot. Ever since I read Persuasion I have felt that she is someone I can completely related to. She is wonderful, even tempered, fair, loyal and kind. She helps everyone and even when she is put down, she keeps going on with her life even though it did not turn out how she expected. While I have not reached the ending I have wanted yet in life, I hold out hope that I eventually will. I am in love with this movie. I already rented it and watched it twice :D

  9. Mr Darcy is my favorite because chivalry in him is most handsome. The way Jane Austen writes about him is si dreamy and something any girl would want in a man

  10. Tammy Henderson says:

    Mr. Darcy…calmness to Elizabeth’s energy.

  11. I really enjoy the character Edmund from Mansfield Park. He has such a balanced demeanor, often reserved but well able to be engaging. He has integrity and consideration and values commitment…and, of course, gets a little blind in matters of love (hasn’t that happened to most people at some point?) but comes around to his failings in the end!

  12. Elizabeth Bennett for sure. I love a woman who stands up for herself. (In the movies, the answer is Darcy for sure.)

  13. Elinor Dashwood from Sense & Sensibility. She is often overlooked or misunderstood , I think. She was very selfless and kept her sorrow to herself but eventually she learned to accept love & happiness

  14. Mr. Darcy, have to love him!

  15. Mr. Tilney – he makes me laugh, and loves to read! (And he’s played by JJ Feild, so he’s adorable.) :-D

  16. Bridgette W. says:

Mr. Darcy! I love that aloof, superior attitude of his that makes him hard to get and irresistible. There is just something about wanting to rattle that perfect gentleman that gets me haha!

  17. Elizabeth Bennet, of course. I love how sassy she is, and how she sticks up for herself.

  18. Why Mr. Darcy of course. Still looking for my own Mr. Darcy.

  19. Elizabeth (EverythingRemindsMeOfTwilight) says:

My favorite character is Elizabeth Bennet. She is firm and steady, but humbly admits her bad judgement and corrects herself. I love her line, “My courage rises at every attempt to intimidate me.” :)

  20. Of course Mr. Darcy….. doesn’t the guy almost always become the favorite character in books? Because we fall in love with them just like the female lead does?? :O)

  21. My favorite Jane Austen character would have to be Elizabeth Bennett. Her boldness and bravery is what draws me to her the most. Although she was facing being unwed and in financial hardships, she wouldn’t settle for anyone she didn’t love. That takes true courage. I also actually really enjoy mr. Collins. He’s so exhausting in the way he talks that it becomes funny!

  22. Mr. Darcy for sure! And if I could be anyone I would pick Elizabeth Bennett.

  23. I have to say Mr. Knightley is my favorite. I love his speech to Emma “If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more.” ugh *SWOON* yes. just yes.

  24. DishclothRioter says:

I feel like being contrary and answering “Lydia Bennet.” She’s so ridiculous, it’s hilarious. It’s been so long (probably 20 years) since I’ve read Emma, Persuasion, Mansfield Park, or Northanger Abbey, that I can’t properly consider those characters. Lydia Bennet will have to do.

  25. Mr. Darcy. Sigh.

  26. Mrs.Jennings! Love her.

  27. Mr. Darcy would be first, with Mr. as a close second.

  28. Elizabeth Bennet—how she reacted to Mr. Darcy at first is exactly how I would picture myself reacting and because of the relationship she has with her sister Jane.
