Apparently Summit isn’t concerned, it’s all part of a 4-week, holiday roll out with more advertising planned.
According to Home Media magazine:
“Eclipse, the third film in the “Twilight” franchise, still has plenty of bite with consumers.
The DVD and Blu-ray Disc of the film, which grossed $300 million in U.S. theaters, went on sale at midnight Friday, Dec. 3, and after two days had already sold some 3 million DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, according to Summit Home Entertainment.
The tally falls short of what either of the first two films did on their respective disc openings, but the marketing strategy is different and the release is expected to have longer legs throughout the holiday season, said Steve Nickerson, president of Summit Home Entertainment.
“With the first two titles, we had massive March opening events involving thousands of retail stores,” Nickerson said. “We were going for a big bang, right out of the gate. This time we are releasing the film during the holiday season, a much more crowded time and one with vastly different consumer shopping patterns. So our whole plan is to look at what we’re doing over a four-week period of time, and not a single night.”

I think it actually has a lot to do with the lack of different versions that were released. I person purchased the Borders edition, Target Edition and the Regular edition of New moon and I have a few different copies of Twilight. There was only one real version that that different for Eclipse (aside from the French versions and internationals), I think if we had seen different cover dvds in canada, or versions that included Bella’s ring for example, in North America the total dvd’s sold would have been much higher.
I did the same thing for the first two. But Target had Borders version and theirs wrapped up in one making it nice in my pocket book to only have to buy one this time around.
I didn’t run out and buy it because I know its on my christmas list…that could be the reason many didn’t do it. I am thinking sales will be great!
Personally, i think it was released to close to christmas, people will buy it for christmas, just later on in the month for stocking fillers… it won’t do good its opening weekend but sales will most deffinatly climb through out the remainder of the month and in Janurary.
I dont think there was alot of advertisment really either. And i agree with the comment above – should of been more versions of the cover art
Plus they should keep in mind that due to unemployment and other financial circumstances, this just isn’t on the top of people’s lists.
I thought it was odd to release it in December when the others had come out in March. It didn’t seem like there was a lot of marketing behind it which I found strange.
Good to know they have other plans for it because it’s an excellent movie. I’d hate to see it get lost in the shuffle.
I agree with the other comments. It’s Christmastime. That’s why I don’t have it yet. Usually I would be there in line with everyone else at midnight to get my copy, but I’m already struggling with buying Christmas presents because I’m unemployed. I imagine that’s what happened with alot of people.
I think it was too close to Christmas also. I bought one though!! lol People are saving for the holidays, and if this is not on their list it wont be bought.
Well – I got the DVD yesterday afternoon in the mail from Amazon. Blu-Ray on one side of the cd and regular dvd on the other. The DVDs also have extended scenes, deleted scenes and interviews with a bunch of the stars including Stephanie Meyers. I love love love Eclipse. Its really a good movie. Edward & Bella 4ever.
I’m actually surprised that there was so little advertising of the DVD release. I honestly saw only 1, and I mean only 1 commercial advertising the DVD. The previous DVD releases had many commericial ads, especially aired during prime time.
Also, it appeared there were a lot fewer venues having midnight events and selling of the DVD, so many fans didn’t have the opportunity to get pumped up for it.
I’m also surprised that Target has not advertised that they have an AMAZING special collectors edition DVD with large character cards and ooodles of special features, and also a single disk DVD with diff cover art and at a very low price.
I think all of these factors combined with the fact that many will hold off and wait for Eclipse to be under the Christmas tree are why sales aren’t as high. But I don’t think Summit has anything to be seriously concerned about.
The only advertisement I saw for it was on the Yahoo home page and on Itunes.
I am in agreement. People have it on their Christmas lists!
It should have been released prior to Black Friday.
That’s surprising.
no one can get to it with the snow lol
Wal-Mart seemed to have a bigger promotion with New Moon. They had displays of shirts and bags but I saw very few things to get people excited about the movies..too bad because they could have sold a lot of stuff for Christmas…
it’s right before christmas….people are just being good and putting it on their list instead of running out and buying it right away…..I however….am bad….I already bought my copy
I did the same thing Jessica! Midnight release I was there!
Already bought my copy. I couldn’t wait.
I bought two different versions of Eclipse. That’s not the definition of obssessed right lol?
I am not sure how its not doing well… I down loaded one from Itunes, ordered one weeks ago on line, and got one from Target. Ugh what more can I do? :0)
don’t understand that. i think Eclipse is best so far. got my copy at the midnight release at Walmart. I agree, must be on Christmas lists.
Anybody know why Summit released it at different times around the world ? Australia 1st. Dec., US 4th Dec, the rest of the world ???? Just interested.
it has to do with the distributors in each of
the other countries. Plus maybe fear of bootleg
copies might play a part.
not cool, it deserved so much better.
going to buy mine tomorrow had to wait.
I paid 25 for new moon saw eclipse in walgreens for 17
I don’t know how a fan could wait until Christmas to get it, but, apparently, they can. I think it has something to do with the fact that they weren’t trying to steal our money like they did with NM. There were WAY too many versions out there and I ended up buying two. This time, I was relieved to only “have” to buy one. I say, thank you, Summit, for not trying to screw us in this economy!
I agree with you Lissa! The NM fiasco did leave a bad aftertaste in my mouth. I cursed Scummit! I’m very happy there’s only “1 version” this time around for Eclipse. Various cover selections and collector’s edition are a different story. I’m a Twi-hard, but in this economy we all have to watch our pennies.
You’d not know it by me- one Blueray, DVD combo pack x 3 for me, sister in law, and niece. And I picked up that DVD with all the music from the flicks. Summit hearts me.
Thats not cool!!!! Its the best yet!
Well IDK…I still like Twilight the best. I think Breaking Dawn will go off the charts. I just hope it’s done right.
I’m waiting to get it for X-mas, too. Since they released it in Dec., I figured I might as well just put it on my wish list. I usually get the fancy set from Borders. Does anyone know why there doesn’t seem to be one this time?
I believe that if you want the same edition that Borders previously had Target now has it. Im not 100% sure because I got mine from Amazon but this is what I’ve heard. Hope this helps.
You’re right. Thanks. I looked at the Target website, and their “Eclipse” set looks just like the ones Borders used to have. How strange that Target now carries it.
This was on my sister’s list for Christmas. We were at the midnight release and got the dvd. She already has it and we’ve watched it. There was no way to keep it hidden from her, so we gave it to her early. We have a limited budget for Christmas so she knows that this is one of her presents.
There’s going to be higher numbers… a lot of people will be buying this as a Christmas present I’m sure!
And its the Same price as the others. The regular dvd was $16 and 2-disc special was only $22 so its not any higher then the last two
We paid $14 for two disc at wal-mart in Canada and for blu-ray $19.99
Wal-Mart had the best price in Maryland. Purchased and having an Eclipse party cookie exchange party this weekend.
“and after two days had already sold some 3 million DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, according to Summit Home Entertainment.”
So what are they complaining about? That’s a lot of millions and I’m sure it’s way more so far this week.
Not to mention all the people who haven’t Christmas shopped yet. I don’t even see how there’s a news article about this.
I went to walmart in Maryland too. Their release party sucked but I got my DVD and I bought one at Target too. So i did my part to boost sales…lol
Oh they’ll be fine. Eclipse had the best theater numbers. They did their fans a favor and didn’t force them into buying 2 and 3 versions of the same DVD. They can take the hit.
I ended up buying two separate editions and will dl the digital copy. I bought the DVD/BlueRay Target Special Edition not realizing the complete special features were only on the bluray disc. So, of course I had to go get the dvd version with the special features. I tend to agree with most that many people are getting it for Christmas.
However, I’m slightly infuriated with Summit at the moment. I say an ad on TV today for the DVD that was completely focused on Bella & Jacob with not a mention or glimpse of Edward. Honestly, as a fan of the novels, I’m beyond insulted by this. they’ve alreayd done their damndest to rewrite the novels, playing up a conflict that didn’t really exist. Do they have to ignore the realities of the Saga in the marketing, too?
I had NO IDEA they didn’t have the special features on the regular dvd side. We’re getting a bluray player for xmas, so I thought it’d be cool to get this combo. Nowhere on the dvd or anywhere does it say the special features are on one side only ):
There’s a spot devoted to just Edward and Bella running too.
I noticed too that the promo for this one was nothing compared to New Moon. I saw about 4 ads for it before the release date. I kept checking Lexicon to make sure it actually was being released. Seemed like a very half hearted attempt on Summits part to promote the release.
Being in Wisconsin I know there were a lot of people that did not buy opening night because of a good snowstorm we had come thru. At the last release party i want to for New Moon there were atleast 200 ppl and they said they were expecting 50 with the snowstorm and we ended up with 33! Without the snow they would have expected close to 300 so i think that really hurt opening night sales at least up here
The Walmart I went to keeps doing less and less each time! This time all they had was a tiny cake that didn’t feed near the 100 some people that were there! You would think they would care about the huge line of people that were giving them loads of money!
Where I get my DVD, we’ve had an actor there for the release of the past two films. I think that not having one come this time around brought down the sales a TON. If Summit has actors going to specific places across the country, more people are going to show up. I know that for Eclipse people were walking in, passing the line of only 100 people, and deciding to just get it later. There was no point waiting in line for 6 hours like there was for Twilight and New Moon.
And then there’s the party confusion. Though the Eclipse website said that there was going to be a release party at the location I went to, there wasn’t anything going on. Wal Mart was extremely confused when I went up and asked where I need to line up for the Eclipse DVD, let alone when I said there was supposed to be a party. Nobody even knew the DVD was being released that night.
That last part is due to lack of advertising. Like everyone else on here, I only saw one commercial for this. When I went to Wal Mart that night, I continually checked the calendar to reassure myself that it was coming out at midnight.
And then there’s the percentage of people who are buying it for Christmas. I couldn’t wait till then, but I know that a lot of people are. Especially because there wasn’t anything big to kick off the release.
Overall, a pretty bad marketing plan by Summit. They’ll still make a lot of money off of Eclipse, but it will be more spread out through a period of time.
I think it’s because of the lack of castmember appearances. Those have boosted up sales big time! Plus, the different copies, unfortunately, forced some of us to buy more than one version in the past. And finally, it’s the timing. A lot of people are too busy to buy it right now, or they are waiting and hoping they get it for Chritmas
