Our blood mobiles in NE mississippi recently had a blood drive in which they were giving away free eclipse tee shirts and passes to the movie (while they lasted)It started at 11;00am, we were there at 20 till 11:00 and they waited until we were ready to give blood to tell us they gave away all the tee shirts 2 days earlier at the first stop, and if we wanted passes everyone would have to come back at 1:00 pm. (we didn’t come back)It was a good cause, but very poorly organized. I felt sorry for everone (and there were many) who came. As we left we heard the local radio station still telling everyone to come on down and give and receive your free eclipse tee….they never even told them they had been out for days….great idea but kinda shady.
In this instance, I wish that they would have also specified that the official ‘donate life’ is about organ & tissue donation. I have been involved for almost 20 years due to my brother needing a lung transplant (which he didn’t receive in time), my tissue transplant (ACL), and my cousin donating upon his death. Yes, donating blood is important, I do it (plasma & platelets) every two weeks. Of course, with the 2010 US Transplant Games just around the corner? I wonder if I will see any of those special T’s there.
Thank you so much for posting this! I am the faculty advisor for the blood drive portion of the Niagara Falls High School “Donate Life” Club. We have a very active club whose mission is to promote organ and tissue donation. Upstate New York Transplant Services (UNYTS) is the local organization which helps to raise this awareness, as well as encourage blood donation.
My aim, as the faculty advisor, is to encourage teens to give back “the gift of life” not only by donating blood, but by registering through UNYTS as an organ and tissue donor.
Hats off to Chaske for organizing a blood drive, too. This should be a “given” for every premiere, not just to celebrate the movies and books we all love dearly, but to encourage responsible citizenship from all Twilight fans. Even if you can’t donate, you can man the refreshment table, encourage friends, and save lives.
Thanks, Lexicon! You gals are the greatest!
