Taylor Lautner’s Valentine’s Day is about to open just in time for…you guessed it…Valentine’s Day. The movie is directed by legendary romantic comedy master, Gary Marshall. Judging from the promos it seems to be shooting for a Love Actually feel only with an American cast.
The movie Love Actually, directed and written by Richard Curtis of Four Weddings a a Funeral fame, took some of the biggest names in British TV and cinema (Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson, and Hugh Grant to name a few) and threw them into interweaving stories on love at Christmastime. The result was a feel good movie with a star power ensemble cast. The stars came out because Richard Curtis was very popular with the UK acting community.
It looks like Valentine’s Day is working off the same type of formula, and with big-name, award winning actors (some of whose careers Gary Marshall helped to launch to A-list level). The Oscar and Emmy power here is rather stunning:
Kathy Bates: 3 time Oscar nominee/winner
Patrick Dempsy: Emmy winner
Hector Elinzado: 5 time Emmy nominee, and winner
Jennifer Garner: 4 time Emmy nominee
Anne Hathaway: Oscar nominee
Queen Latifa: Oscar nominee
Shirley Maclaine: 6 time Oscar nominee/winner and 6 Time Emmy Nominee
Julia Roberts: 3 time Oscar nominee/winner and Emmy nominee
This doesn’t count talented fan-favorites, but not current award winners like Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, and Bradley Cooper.
Predictably, Jessica Alba in talking to MTV, is a fan of her co-stars Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift.
Alex Meraz doesn’t seem to feel that way (and his choice of words caused quite the media firestorm yesterday).
What vibe do you get sight unseen: feel good hit, money grubbing flop, or something in between?

Hahah that Alex Meraz thing was funny. I wouldn’t hold it against him. Everyone has their movie preferences.
I’m excited to see Valentine’s Day though. I like Queen Latifah, Shirley Maclaine, Julia Roberts, and Kathy Bates
At $12.50 a pop in NYC, this is a wait for DVD Netflix pic for me!
I think Alex was just stating a fact. He’s right, the idea is that you have all these stars together so you should see it because of that, never mind if the movie is good or not. That’s how the movie is being marketed. It’s like he is not allowed to voice anything even mildly controversial. Geez…. same goes for the rest of the Twi cast.
I kind of agree with Alex. Most of the time when they throw a bunch of big name actors in a big ensemble, it ends up being crappy. Love Actually was an exception. And the solid reasoning behind it is that the majority of the production costs end up going to the over-inflated A-list actor costs.
I’m probably not going to see this movie, I agree with what Alex said. Still, I absolutely love Love Actually and Valentine’s Day is basically an American version of it, so it might not be that bad. The trailer is pretty boring though.
I might see it if the reviews are good. Otherwise, I’ll wait til I can rent it or see it at a discounted price. Don’t get me wrong – I love Taylor
I will be incredibly surprised if there is any substance to this movie. I agree that it’s just a reworking of Love Actually but that doesn’t guarantee success. That movie was hilarious, whereas this movie just looks silly.
I think the only actors that will benefit out of this career move are the Taylor’s.
to be honest, I don’t really care about this movie, like the only motivation for me to watch it is because I love Taylor Swift and taylor lautner especially when they were togehter.
But for u guys, i’m suggesting that you guys watch Percy Jackson & the Last Olympians! It’s a fantastic book series, and it was directed by Chris Columbus! I know that some of u guys may say that it probably sucks, but people have said the same for Twilight before, and it’s one of the most amazing movies I know
With the multi character concept I don’t think any movie could top Love Actually. It was the original and will always be the best.
I love Love, Actually. It has become *the* Christmas movie that I watch every year (and it has totally been vindicated – the reviews were pretty dismal, as I recall, when it first came out). I have zero interest in watching this Americanized version. Seriously, how do you top Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Rowan Atkinson, Martin Freeman, Keira Knightley, Thomas Sangster, Bill Nighy and cameos by Claudia Schiffer and January Jones? A: You don’t.
Hey! Happy Valentines Day everyone. Wish you all to have a very sweet moment with your loved ones.
